Hello South Fulton,

Y’all know how I love to travel. And to kick off the summer every year, I meet my sorority sisters in different locations, sans husbands and kids, allowing for just sisterhood and relaxation. Last year we went to Puerto Rico. This year we journeyed to California wine country: Napa, Sonoma and Santa Rosa. We drank lots of wine and had lots of laughs. We visited the Brown Estate Tasting Room, owned by an African American family, and had an absolute ball. And as reflected in the words of Santa Rosa’s own cartoonist and creator of Charlie Brown and Snoopy, there’s no time like time spent nurturing friendships formed over 20 years.

As my plane descended over the lush treetops of beautiful #Sofu, I felt rejuvenated. But more than anything I was glad to be back. It’s nice to get away, but like Dorothy said in the “Wizard of Oz,” “There’s truly no place like home!”

THE

Your Healthy Diet is Closer Than You Think By Zwade Marshall, MD, MBA

T

he commercialization of the food processing system and the unsavory farming practices associated with mass produced foods has led many discerning foodies to seek a healthier alternative. The farm to table movement was born out of the need to source ethically harvested food while fostering a greater connection between the consumer and the source of the food. Central to this farming culture is a focus on animal welfare to promote humanely raised animals with grass-fed, free-range and pastured practices. The locally sourced produce is not subjected to prolonged freezing and processing to preserve its shelf-life. Fruits and vegetables that make it on our dinner table are transported an average of 1,500 miles before being sold (source: Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture). In order to preserve the produce for that length of travel, industrial farmers harvest the fruits and veggies before they fully ripen. This practice allows the fruits to ripen during transport but it arrives lacking many of the vitamins and minerals that would have been there if those fruits were left to fully flourish before being harvested, packed and shipped. Locally sourced fruits, vegetables, meats and cheeses significantly benefit the local economy of the consumers who purchase these foods, and the environmental impact is favorable since the transportation vehicles that carry the produce are high fuel consumption vehicles with a heavy carbon footprint. However, as a physician that manages pain in patients, the biggest benefit of this trend is the culture of consumers paying attention to the nutrition content of their meals. Obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol and diets high in saturated fats contribute to the inflammatory states that affect pain syndromes. My hope is that sustainable farming with locally sourced fruits and vegetables will eventually reduce the cost for access to healthy food. Part of the obesity epidemic stems for the relatively low cost of processed foods, fast foods and saturated fats. Hopefully, when the farm comes to the table we are choosing to reduce the consumption of white breads, sugary drinks, fried foods, chips and pastries. Instead, we should be consuming more carrots, beets, cherries, grapes, onions and teas rich in anti-oxidants. I will admit, just before penning this article I thoroughly enjoyed a red-velvet cupcake at a dinner party hosted by my wife. Our friends brought these delights from a local company that rhymes with “Yami-cakes”. These treats were sublime, however, I also had a fruit salad with an assortment of citrus, a green salad with dark, green leafy veggies, and baked chicken legs. I don’t feel guilty about the cupcake, I deserve it and so do you if you adhere to principles of moderation and a healthy active lifestyle.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Infinite Exposure Photography was inadvertently

referred to as Infinite Exposures in the June issue. Last month we posted an informative article about Men's Health. This topic resonates with many of us, as our South Fulton community recently lost our dear neighbor, Keith Allen. We would like to clarify that the context of the article did not intend to speak for Keith's medical past. He was always very proactive in preventative health measures, as a matter of fact, Keith and his loving wife would affectionately joke about his lack of hesitation in visiting the doctor's office. The intent of our article was to bring awareness and pay tribute to a topic that became near and dear to Keith and his family. He will be greatly missed. 12

or over 13 years Chiropractors Winston and Chantaye Carhee have been living, working and

playing in the South Fulton Community (#SoFu).

Dr. Winston Carhee’s purpose is to help as many

people as possible. He was raised in the South Fulton

metro area, where the community has the highest rates of preventable diseases and injuries. Therefore,

he made it his mission to help prevent these diseases and assist people recovering from injuries. This mis-

sion is personal for Dr. Carhee, who was involved in a motor vehicle collision in 1991 that took the life of two of his childhood friends and caused him serious injuries that took him two years to recover from. This experience changed Dr. Carhee’s life forever. Dr. Carhee understands firsthand how a car crash can alter your life. Whether it’s a major or minor impact, resulting pain and injuries should not be taken lightly and a full recovery is necessary. Dr. Carhee collaborates and co-manages cases with medical doctors and specialists to provide the best evidence-based treatment for every type of injury. Their team helps patients recover as quickly and as safely as possible while thoroughly documenting the injuries. As a result, many professionals refer patients to their offices. Dr. Chantaye Carhee was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. She is the daughter of a national Baptist preacher who still raises his own crops. Dr. Chantaye Carhee knows the importance of a natural diet and its relation to better health. She specializes in Wellness and Advanced Nutritional Analysis and suggests natural supplementation to support the function of the body’s systems and organs. Not only is Dr. Carhee a successful businesswoman who operates their Fayetteville office, she is a successful mother of two young boys, Winston III (4) and William (3), both born naturally without major medical intervention. Currently, she is finishing her certification as a natural Bradley Birthing Technique instructor and is well aware of the importance of balancing the female body naturally. Her goal is to help the women in our community do so as well. The public is invited to the Grand Relocation Celebration on July 1, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 3910 Cascade Road. Come out and join us for family activities, bouncers, food, music, prayer and praise.

orocco is a land of cities and villages, old and new, traditional and contemporary, where Mercedes and donkeys are side by side in the

streets. You’ll see business districts with high rises ringed by shanty towns, ancient walled cities, painted blue cities and beautiful deserts, and medinas with back alleys to get lost in, public squares with snake charmers, musicians, magicians and con artists waiting to take your money. Morocco has it all! It’s where fresh breads are baked for meals daily, and the fragrant aroma of spices hangs in the air; where fresh oranges grow wild. Morocco is a beautifully peaceful country. I enjoyed every minute of my solo trip there. Full of rich history, Morocco’s people are warm and friendly, and every meal was incredibly delicious—it is a true feast for the eyes! As a designer, I appreciated the hand-knotted rugs, the beautiful woven textiles, the intricate mosaic tiles and the intense colors of the hand-dyed leathers. Moroccans take great pride in their handicrafts and traditional craftsmanship. With Arabic, French, Spanish and English spoken by most, the country is not too difficult to navigate. Traveling solo, I would recommend hiring a guide, which is easily affordable. Put Morocco on your bucket list and see as much of it as you can. Savvy travelers have been able to grab round trip tickets for under $500.

TO THE COUNTRY OR THROUGH THE COUNTRY? CHOOSING AN OCEAN CRUISE OR A RIVER CRUISE ARTICLE CATINA WILSON

O

ceans Take You to Countries, Rivers Take You Through Them Ocean Cruising Versus River Cruising

Planning for a cruise, whether your first or fifth, is exhilarating. After all, what could be

more relaxing, entertaining and rejuvenating than spending days upon days on the calm and peaceful sea completely away from it all? Cruises are a great all-in-one vacation, combining shopping, shows, dining, lodging, tours and excursions. So how does one choose between an ocean or a river cruise? It depends on your personal preference, cruising experience and budget. Most travelers start with ocean cruising and eventually transition to river cruising for a different kind of experience. Ocean cruising is an incredible experience, providing amazing costal views, a greater reach to the world, a bigger space for more fun and lots of onboard amenities and activities. It is the real deal for families and anyone looking to just simply get away. Some people want a more intimate experience with fewer crowds as well as an insider look at the destinations. So how do you go about exploring further inland? A river cruise is the way to go! You can sail right into the heart of any city around the world. To help you further decide whether an ocean or a river cruise is right for you, here a few considerations:

SIZE The first and most obvious difference is the size of the ship. A river cruise ship is much smaller – it has to be in order to cruise through its chosen river, go under bridges and travel through locks. On the other hand, an ocean cruise ship has no such limits. Witness the ever larger and more incredible vessels being launched every year from many of the major cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Norwegian. River cruising provides a more intimate experience than an ocean cruise. With probably only another 100 to 150 people on board, you can end up knowing just about everyone on your cruise. Faces will become much more familiar and you’ll be recognized more often than if you were on an ocean cruise ship with up to 6,000 fellow guests! The small number of guests also means that the staff will become more acquainted with you and be able to show you more attention. Don’t get me wrong: even with a large number of passengers on ocean cruises, the staff still does an amazing an amazing job of getting to know you and your preferences. 20

Ama Waterways

Ama Waterways

PORT LOCATION If you have been on an ocean cruise ship, you will know that due to its size, the ship has to anchor in the ocean or dock at a large port facility, often located some distance from the host city and requiring a taxi ride, bus or shuttle to get where you want to go when you get off the ship, as docks are often located away from the sights that you want to see. With a river cruise, due to the small size of the vessel, it can dock right in the heart of a city, very close to the sights you want to see for convenience. You simply walk off the ship and you are right there!

CHOICE & AVAILABILITY

Norwegian Cruise Line

River cruising is still a relatively new market. However, the choice of vessels and routes is growing rapidly. River cruise lines like Viking

Norwegian Cruise Line

and Ama Waterways are building new ships every year and expanding their itineraries to places beyond Europe like Africa, Cambodia and Vietnam. River cruises tend to sell out quickly because of the small number of available spaces. The ocean cruise ship market is well-established and fiercely competitive, so you have a wide choice of operators, itineraries and ships to choose from. Due to the fiercely competitive nature of the market, you can get some great deals on ocean cruises with special offers popping up all the time and plenty of availability.

ENTERTAINMENT River cruise vessels are limited in the public space that they can dedicate to entertainment. There will always be some form of entertainment, such as local music, themed cruises that offer local wine

Atlanta. They walked in ZuCot Art Gallery, setting the atmosphere on fire. The ambiance of the evening was amazing, and guests could definitely feel the love in the air. The spoken word artist, Kalecia Wright, set the tone of sweet love for the evening, accompanied by cellist Vanessa Fanning of the Orchestra Noir, playing "Georgia On My Mind." The phenomenal vocalist Phillippia gave us an "experience" like no other as she blew us away with every soulful note; they call her the "Queen of Indie Soul" for a reason. The food by Chef Malika of Social Butterfly was tantalizing; the grilled lamb chops were tender and downright delicious. Yummy Summer Fun: Blueberry Picking Tips

I

ARTICLE SHONTE PRESS f you’re looking for something fun, healthy and inexpensive to do with your family this month, I

have the perfect suggestion for you! Consider taking a trip to a local blueberry patch. Believe it or not, you can actually find a lot of farms that offer blueberry picking in Georgia. To find the location closest to you, visit PickYourOwn.org. Blueberry season runs from about June 15 to August 15, although I would suggest calling the farm first to ask them when their crop is best for picking and to ensure they are a pesticide/chemical-free farm. While you have them on the phone, make sure they still have a nice amount of crop left to pick. Unfortunately, we neglected to do this on our first blueberry picking outing. We had no idea that it was close to the end of the season and most of the crop was already picked over. It literally took us several hours just to get about a gallon of blueberries. Let’s just say Mom and the kids ended up going to sit in the shade, while Dad worked overtime in the patch! Here are a few tips to help make your blueberry picking trip a success.

BLUEBERRY PICKING DAY TIPS • Pack healthy snacks • Take lots of cold water • Bring sunscreen and bug spray • Carry hand towels and a small step ladder (optional) • Bring gallon size Ziploc bags and a cooler with a few ice packs (to store your berries in during the ride home) • Eat or freeze the blueberries within five to seven days (you can also make blueberry jam, muffins, or smoothies with your freshly picked blueberries). I hope you enjoy blueberry picking. Please let me know how it goes! Connect with me at PressOnEnterprise.com. I would love to share your experience with our community!
