P.S. This guy is my why! I suspect that part of the reason that weddings are often so emotional and that graduations are so full of elation are that tearful moms are picturing the groom in diapers or their graduate wobbling on his first pair of roller skates! There's no love like a mother's love! Enjoy your day!

Tender Love

JIBRI & SALVIA’S LOVE STORY

“T

surrender.” Every time they gaze into each other’s eyes, Jibri and Salvia think of the words from the classic love song by Force MDs. It all began at a college alumni party at Loew's Hotel in downtown Atlanta. As the night came to an end and Salvia was about to head home, her best friend, Corey, said someone wanted to meet her. Jibri approached her, saying, “Just give me five minutes.” After meeting this tall, handsome man with an incredible smile, Salvia was hooked. After their first date, the two became inseparable. Jibri knew he had found his dream girl and the one that was meant for him. Salvia knew she was the luckiest girl in the world and she admired everything about Jibri, including his strength, intelligence and passion.   Fast forward exactly five years from the night they met to a surprise trip to New York. Jibri kneeled on one knee at the rooftop atrium of a hotel directly across from Central Park and asked Salvia to marry him. Of course, she said, “Yes!”  The whirlwind New York weekend included a helicopter ride, walks in Central Park, a visit to Times Square, dining in Brooklyn and loads of love. The newly engaged couple will marry this fall at the Biltmore Hotel in Atlanta.   Jibri Fox has a bachelor’s degree in Finance from Wilberforce University, where he became a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. He is currently a managing partner of BIIGDATA Solutions, a cloud strategy IT firm. Salvia Y. Smith has a bachelor’s in English and Political Science from Spelman College, where she became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She also has a Juris Doctor from the University of Georgia School of Law. She is currently a partner at the law firm of Smith & Brown, LLC, and a Magistrate Court Judge in Clayton County, Georgia.

CLASS OF 2017 (CON TI N U ED)

Nyire Gray

Benjamin E. Mays High School

Nyire Gray is the great grandniece of her school’s namesake, Dr. Benjamin Elijah Mays, and she takes great pride in her school. Innovative gardening techniques, such as hydroponics, have taken root in her household, however, Nyire’s interests lie in animal sciences. With a passion for the sciences, Nyire pursued independent learning tracks, shadowing at Piedmont Animal Hospital and conducting experiments at Georgia Tech’s BIO@TECH program. Nyire spent this past summer at Fort Valley State University’s agricultural research station focusing on veterinary science. She played basketball and volleyball for Greater Atlanta Adventist Academy and is currently on the Mays Volleyball Team. Her future plans include attending Fort Valley State University to obtain a veterinarian technician certification and a Bachelor’s degree. After her undergraduate studies, Nyire aspires to attend the school of veterinary medicine at the University of Georgia or Tuskegee University.

Gabriel Jackson

Langston Hughes High School A native of the South Fulton community, Gabriel Jackson is very involved, having participated in nearly 20 clubs and organizations. He has taken on several leadership roles, including section leader in the band, secretary and membership chair of Future Business Leaders of America, and treasurer of the National Honors Society. Gabriel's most humbling role is that of class president, as he takes pride in being a steward amongst his peers, especially at this pivotal time. Despite his demanding schedule, his involvement in clubs and activities does not hinder his work ethic inside the classroom—Gabriel earned the ranking of valedictorian of his senior class! He will further his education in the fall at Howard University and intends to major in Finance. After his undergraduate studies, Gabriel aspires to attend either business or law school.

Rasheed Muhammad

Fulton Leadership Academy Rasheed Muhammad is a well-versed scholar, frequently traveling abroad and already accomplishing so much in his varied fields of interests. He has been recognized by his teachers for three years in a row for earning the coveted grade level Achievement award. Rasheed holds an 84.6 percentile Junior Ranking in the United States Chess Federation. He is also a participant in the Fulton County Junior District Attorney and Justice Benham Law Camps, and he even presented as a speaker at the Gate City Bar Association. Terry Myrick

Woodward Academy Scholar-athlete Terry Myrick is the son of Devon and Eboni Myrick. He continues to uphold the Myrick family passion of giving back and has participated in numerous community service projects. The most impressionable projects for him were “Blessings in a Backpack,” where he helped pack 900 backpacks with weekend meals for area children, and the Terranova Canned Food Drive, aimed to assist students in Zambia. An academic high achiever, Terry has received an “Emerald Scholarship” for academics to Eastern Michigan University. The ideal student-athlete, Terry played football for four varsity football seasons. He was named first team All-Region for two consecutive years and second team All-State as a senior. Three straight regional titles have led to this Woodward War Eagle signing a Division 1 athletic scholarship to Eastern Michigan University. Terry strives to be a great big brother to 9-year-old Tyree and a positive example for his peers.

Sydney Stepney

Benjamin E. Mays High School Ranking in the Top 5 of her senior class, Sydney Stepney has shown leadership academically, athletically and civically. She leads as president of her school’s Beta Club, National Honor Society, Urban Agriculture Club, District Nutrition Ambassador, and Captain for both the Varsity Cheer and Track teams. Working closely with The Science National Honor Society and BEWARE (Benjamin Elijah Women Articulating Real Empowerment), Sydney has made several public appearances, including on FOX5 News and The Weather Channel about her school’s innovative greenhouse. This student-athlete also holds many athletic accomplishments, placing in the girls’ shot put competition for consecutive years, cheering on a champion squad for the region, and earning the title of Wendy’s High School Heisman Trophy Winner. Sydney is a member of the Pink Lemonade Stand Entrepreneur Foundation and has spent time volunteering with the College Park Tumbleweeds, working with youth on Bronze-level routines.

Aletha R. Cherry is an educator and a momtivist. Born in Germany, she has spent her adult life in the South Fulton area. A

re you recently engaged and fallen victim to those wedding blogs that make you believe you can afford the swankiest venue

in town, complete with those plush centerpieces for 200 guests? It’s a harsh reality when you realize those things just don’t work for your budget. Does that mean you should water down your dream wedding? Not at all! Instead, maybe you should consider an elopement. The term “elopement” has taken on new life and its meaning has completely evolved over the years. Long gone are the days of cheesy, drive-through weddings. Elopements can be spontaneous, private acts or meticulously planned “pop up” experiences, with a handful of special guests. There are no restrictions. More couples are going intimate to avoid the unnecessary pressures of hosting large, expensive weddings. The biggest decision in planning an elopement is deciding the when and where. Elopements not only cut down on costs, but they shorten lengthy engagements.

s

Many working professionals decide to elope because of timing and not necessarily budget constraints. If budget isn't a concern, it may be ideal to hire a wedding designer to serve up a major dose of style. A wedding designer can set the tone by creating a stylized wedding environment so you can focus on the details without sacrifice because of your low guest count. If you've always envisioned a six-tier wedding cake, then go for it! A cake designer can incorporate faux layers to achieve your desired look… just be sure to plan ahead. REMEMBER YOUR MANNERS

Let’s not forget about elopement etiquette. Yes, there’s etiquette. For example, you don't want your closest family and friends to find out about the elopement via an unexpected social media announcement. Keep them "in the know" by telling them the news prior to your big day. It will definitely be an easier pill to swallow. Openly communicate with loved ones by letting them know your decision to elope is about you and your fiancé. And most importantly, send wedding announcements expressing gratitude for their love and support. Have fun with it! You’re entitled to avoid the potential chaos of a traditional large wedding, and your loved ones are sure to respect your wishes. You can always set the table for two! Taylor and Cornelius met online but not in the manner of many couples that connect using Match or eHarmony. As fate would have it, he happened across her photo on Tumblr. “I was just browsing my dashboard until I saw a picture of her and I was floored. I had never seen a woman quite like her. I then proceeded to search her entire blog until I saw her face in full view and saw she had freckles. I felt like I had hit the jackpot.” Cornelius searched the page for information about a boyfriend.  “I didn’t see one and I ended up sending a message, not expecting her to reply, but she did. Eventually my terrible jokes led to us meeting in person. From there we somehow hit it off.” He fell in love with her great personality.  “She was so caring,” he says. “I was always expecting myself to mess it up somehow.” They shared the common interests of football, food and the finer things in life.

LOVE MAKES A WAY

“A couple of weeks later, my job required me to work in Boston. I didn't want to lose her so I decided to sacrifice my time and money to see her. I flew from Boston to Atlanta every month for six months. Once I landed in Atlanta I took the train to my apartment, got my car, and drove to Covington to her job. Most of the time she was so busy but it was worth it to me to have a small amount of time with her. We talked on the phone every night while I was in Boston but I was incredibly happy to make it through those six months and come back home to Atlanta.” A DREAM FULFILLED: THE ENGAGEMENT

“I always used to have this dream where I was at the altar and my wife would be walking down the aisle, but I could never see her face. That dream would become clearer night by night, as we dated. Finally one night in that same dream, I was able to see the bride’s face and it was Taylor. That's when I knew that God was telling me that this is the woman you need to marry.” From that night on, Cornelius started planning the proposal. “My job at the time was flying to the Dominican Republic for a company vacation and I begged them to allow her to come so I could propose. They agreed and I scraped and saved every dollar I could to buy her an engagement ring. When we were in Punta Cana, the night of the proposal I was very nervous because it was also her birthday weekend as well. Eventually I proposed to her near the beach and she wasn't going to cry until she saw the ring. From there it was waterworks, but she did say yes. I found out her grandmother was Dominican. We celebrated the night away and we have been together ever since.”

Pretty Paper Blossoms ARTICLE BOLANLE PACE | PHOTOGRAPHY SONYA YIM PHOTOGRAPHY

P

retty Paper Blossoms was born three years ago, when I was looking for a hobby after leaving the luxury retail industry to be a stay-at-home mom. After

creating a set of paper flowers for my home and posting them on social media, orders began to follow. Four short months later, my company was up and running. Pretty Paper Blossoms specializes in luxury paper flower sculptures for all occasions. I provide wedding and event décor, as well as interior decor for res-

idential and commercial properties. I have also recently released a collection of paper lamps and handmade jewelry. Paper flowers are extremely popular right now, however, my designs are unique, because I believe in the perfection of imperfection. I do not use cutting machines to make my flowers and I rarely use templates. My designs are cut freehand with scissors to ensure that no two flowers are exactly alike. Detail is also extremely important to me, so my flowers often feature hand-bleached and hand-painted petals, as well as quilled centers. I work with my husband, Ahad Pace, a professionally trained fine artist and children's book illustrator, who helps me conceptualize many of my designs. I receive inspiration from God's beauty, color, texture, fashion and the creativity that flows through my home. Last year, I was blessed to design the set for a photo shoot that landed on the cover of Krave Magazine, and I recently won a Diamond Award for Atlanta's Best Custom Design element.

This year I am focusing on expanding my product line, designing the set for the New York Bridal Fashion Week, and sharing my knowledge with others through my Paper Flower Workshops. Visit my website, PrettyPaperBlossoms.com to view examples of my work, my full rental inventory and a link to my Etsy shop. Bolanle Pace is the Owner/Designer of Pretty Paper Blossoms.

T

he commercialization of the food processing system and the unsavory farming practices associated with mass produced foods has led many discerning foodies to seek a healthier alternative. The farm to table movement was born out of the need to source ethically harvested food while fostering a greater connection between the consumer and the source of the food. Central to this farming culture is a focus on animal welfare to promote humanely raised animals with grass-fed, free-range and pastured practices. The locally sourced produce is not subjected to prolonged freezing and processing to preserve its shelf-life. Fruits and vegetables that make it on our dinner table are transported an average of 1,500 miles before being sold (source: Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture). In order to preserve the produce for that length of travel, industrial farmers harvest the fruits and veggies before they fully ripen. This practice allows the fruits to ripen during transport but it arrives lacking many of the vitamins and minerals that would have been there if those fruits were left to fully flourish before being harvested, packed and shipped. Locally sourced fruits, vegetables, meats and cheeses significantly benefit the local economy of the consumers who purchase these foods, and the environmental impact is favorable since the transportation vehicles that carry the produce are high fuel consumption vehicles with a heavy carbon footprint. However, as a physician that manages pain in patients, the biggest benefit of this trend is the culture of consumers paying attention to the nutrition content of their meals. Obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol and diets high in saturated fats contribute to the inflammatory states that affect pain syndromes. My hope is that sustainable farming with locally sourced fruits and vegetables will eventually reduce the cost for access to healthy food. Part of the obesity epidemic stems for the relatively low cost of processed foods, fast foods and saturated fats. Hopefully, when the farm comes to the table we are choosing to reduce the consumption of white breads, sugary drinks, fried foods, chips and pastries. Instead, we should be consuming more carrots, beets, cherries, grapes, onions and teas rich in anti-oxidants. I will admit, just before penning this article I thoroughly enjoyed a red-velvet cupcake at a dinner party hosted by my wife. Our friends brought these delights from a local company that rhymes with “Yami-cakes”. These treats were sublime, however, I also had a fruit salad with an assortment of citrus, a green salad with dark, green leafy veggies, and baked chicken legs. I don’t feel guilty about the cupcake, I deserve it and so do you if you adhere to principles of moderation and a healthy active lifestyle.

Faith Reflections

Just a Touch of Inspiration ARTICLE ALONIA JONES

I Do

M

ay is a very special month. As we have shared in this edition, it’s one of the most favored months for couples to pledge their love to one another through marriage. Clearly, this should

remind us of those famous words: “I do.” Of course, the couple says, "I do" to each other. And then there are the “I do’s” to the dress, the ring, the ceremony—absolutely everything must be in order. I wonder, however, what our attitude may be when it comes to saying “I do” to the other aspects of life that mean just as much, primarily ourselves. The older I get, the more I realize that we should be doing all we can to live rather than merely exist. Unfortunately, the pressures of life and our many responsibilities may cause us to feel like we are aimlessly wandering through the motions of our daily routine, essentially just mindlessly doing what needs to be done.  This may be particularly true for those who work in the service field. These are those who consistently give, give, give all for the sake of others. They sacrifice and place themselves and their needs on the back burner to make things better for someone else. Trust me, I understand. I am a giver and servant myself. I’m also a firm believer that “What you make happen for others, God will make happen for you.” I’ve seen it work in my life. I did come to realize that even on an airplane, we are instructed to place the oxygen mask

believe Mothers are very special to God. We are charged to be ever-present with our children (in mind when absent in body) just

as He is ever-present with His children. Great is His faithfulness to equip us that we may endure and fulfill the roles in which He has placed us.  May He continue to: Bless your hearts to love your children unconditionally. Bless your minds to have loving and caring thoughts of your children. Bless your intuition to recognize your children’s raw talent and the courage to feed it for growth, development and success. Bless your lips to speak words of encouragement to your children. Bless your eyes to see beyond your children’s faults and meet their needs. Bless your ears to hear your children when they cry out to you. Bless your tears that you shed for your children when things are not quite right. Bless your arms to enfold your children with nurture and strength. Bless your feet to run to your children when they are in trouble. Bless your shoulders to help bear your children’s burdens with support. Bless your belief system to trust God to watch over your children. Bless your faith to teach your children to pray and obey God’s will. Bless your spirit to pray without ceasing for your children and their Father.                                                                   God has honored you with the privilege to birth so that you will nurture, teach and reach nations.  May He give you the endurance and the stamina to always be “Mother of the Year” in the eyes of your children.
