ow! Time really does fly, whether you’re having fun or not. Well, as much as I have fun in just about everything I do, it’s not that much fun to hand over one of my most prized possessions: South Fulton Lifestyle Magazine.  Yep, I said it. My time here has come to an end. This is where you start crying and ask someone around you for a tissue.  I have mine right here.  The good Photo by Ron Hill news is that I’m leaving you in great hands, with an experienced publisher and notable speaker that is going to take you guys to the next level: Mrs. Alonia Jones.  You’ll learn more about her in the pages to follow.  And I’m not going far.  Because of our success at South Fulton Lifestyle Magazine, I’ve accepted a corporate position with Lifestyle Publications.  I will be leading the effort to help grow the company, assisting new publishers across the nation to execute their dream of publishing and owning their publications. As much as I hate to leave this platform, I do so willingly, because I know that it takes me to the next spot in fulfilling my purpose: impacting and influencing others to achieve their goals.  So I’ll leave you with this, SoFu: What is your purpose?  Do you know?  I bet you do.  It’s what’s burning inside of you, what you’re scared to do because you think you won’t make enough money or that you’ll fail miserably.  Or maybe it’s that quiet voice you hear whenever you pass a certain landmark or building or watch a show that reminds you of something you feel like you should be doing.  Whatever the case, if you know your purpose and you’re not moving toward it, shame on you.  Who’s not fulfilling their purpose because you’re not fulfilling yours?   That was kinda heavy, so I’ll lighten it up a bit.  Here’s some more good news: I’ll still be around.  See what I’m up to at MarriedtoMichelle.com, on Twitter, IG, and LinkedIn.  If you look closely, you might also catch me on the big (or small) screen!

102 NEW CHARGING STATIONS UNVEILED AT HARTSFIELD-JACKSON Mayor Kasim Reed joined Georgia Power, the Georgia Public Service Commission and other sustainability leaders to unveil 102 electric vehicle charging stations at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Mayor Reed charged the airport with installing at least 100 electric vehicle charging stations by the end of 2016. The Mayor’s Office of Sustainability coordinated with the sustainability team at the airport to meet the goal. The installation of the electric vehicle stations is just another initiative the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability has implemented to ensure that the City of Atlanta is a top-tier sustainable city.

s a native Atlantan and product of the Atlanta Public School System it has always been my dream to practice high quality medicine in the community in which I grew up. As a student at Southwest Middle School and later Frederick Douglas High School, I quickly realized that many of the high quality necessities that we the people of South Fulton County needed and expected were either not in our community or were looked over either intentionally or unintentionally by the residents of our community.

Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) through its submission of the ITC “Generation Z Recruitment Model.” The grant will enable ITC to create and implement a recruitment model that incorporates the multiple platforms of social media into its recruitment campaign. The grant also allows ITC to employ the use of related technology as a bridge to gain access to millennials and members of “Generation Z” who use mobile devices and social media in virtually every aspect of their decision making and consumption. “We are excited and grateful that the Kresge Foundation and UNCF have embraced this capacity-building effort,” says ITC

When I became a physician and thought about where I wanted to open my practice, the fond memories of south Fulton County strongly influenced my decision. I decided to locate a specialty practice in the community that is being served, as opposed to opening an office and expecting residents from the community to travel a long distance to receive appropriate care from a specialist. My goal as an anesthesiologist and pain specialist at Alliance Spine and Pain Centers is to provide quality care to people in this community as well as the entire metropolitan area. I serve patients in our community as well as other parts of Atlanta and the state of Georgia. I am proud to serve this wonderful community

This grant enables us to employ a more progressive 21st-century approach to the student recruitment process, which will position us to increase our student body.” Additional features of the “Generation Z Recruitment Model” include a redesign of the ITC website, featuring a fully automated, online application process; creation of social media pages for its Office of Admissions; social media training and technical support to admissions staff; creation of an ITC app and recruitment flash drive; and the redesign/upgrade of all student marketing and recruitment materials.

Students from other colleges and universities have also attended many of the lectures and discussions offered by Brooks, chair of the Moore’s Ford Movement. The lecture was also supported by several local churches and organizations, including Greater Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church’s senior pastor Dr. William Flippin and First Congregational Church’s senior pastor Dr. Dwight Andrews. The First African Baptist Church in Monroe and Rev. Edwin Beckles, senior pastor, hosted the students in Monroe. Transportation was provided by United Youth Adult Conference President Michael Langford and SCLC President Charles Steele. En route to Monroe, students stopped at the Old Newton County Jail in Covington to give students an opportunity to see where Brooks and five other civil rights workers were held in solitary confinement for two months for leading marches, boycotts and attacking Jim Crow segregation in 1970. For more than 50 years, Brooks has been a champion for civil and human rights for all Georgians while he served 35 years in the Georgia State Legislature. After 13 years in education, she decided it was time to take the leap. “I love to create and paint,” and I felt like there were plenty of people who would also love the health benefits of relaxing by painting,” says Sabrina. After being voted by Yelp as one of the top 10 Paint & Sip experiences in Atlanta, MOSAIC Moon decided to leave the studio and go completely mobile, becoming MOSAIC Moon - A Pop-Up Paint & Sip Experience. They felt that more people would experience their excellent customer service and great artistry if they brought the concept to communities around Atlanta and beyond. Sipping and painting is a concept that has been around for more than 10 years. Throughout the country, people who don’t normally paint (and those who do) are relaxing with their favorite beverage as they receive instruction on creating a masterpiece in a relaxing and fun environment with great music.  Creating art with acrylics on canvas is a great way to express

A Conversation with

JOHN STEPHENS SOUTH FULTON INVENTOR WANTS YOU TO "THINK OF YOUR TEETH" ARTICLE ERIKKA SEARLES MITCHELL Q: HOW DID YOU THINK OF THE TOYT DISPENSER AND ITS CATCHY NAME? GIVE A HISTORY OF THE PRODUCT AND YOUR BUSINESS.

A: One day I was in the dental office for a routine check-up and my dentist made the common remark, “Remember to floss every day.” I knew the only

John Stephens

way I would remember was if I placed the floss somewhere that I would see it every day. Logically, it made sense to place the floss in the corner on the mirror next to my toothbrush. I did not want something too big, but yet I wanted it to be visible. I also wanted a product that was easy to use, no fuss, no looking for the floss…just pull and go. At the same time, I wanted a reminder that looks cool and unique. Finally, I wanted to make sure it was refillable and thus eco-friendly. To that end, I created premium floss refills for the TOYT dispenser. I believe that when a new product is introduced into the marketplace, it is important to evaluate its impact on the environment. Does the product help to sustain the environment, while adding value for the customer? Creating products that have  less impact on the environment and add value are important. The TOYT dispenser fits this bill, while encouraging and promoting good oral hygiene. The process of inventing a product has been rewarding. It has been a learning curve, but I have embraced it every step of the way. It also takes friends, like Tom Brown and Jay Pilgrim, who help reinforce your focus and strengthen your resolve when you start to slow. I considered selling the idea to a buyer in the beginning. However, I believed the processes of inventing, patenting, manufacturing, packaging and merchandising a product would be good knowledge that I could pass on one day.  Q: CAN YOU OFFER ANY ADVICE TO BUDDING ENTREPRENEURS?

A: My advice to budding entrepreneurs is to remain focused on what you are trying to accomplish. It must be a burning desire that fuels you. Oftentimes the difference between those who succeed and those who do not is the level of focus and drive. Keep a small group of positive people (energy) in your circle. Set daily goals and be willing to make sacrifices to reach those goals. Whether you write them down or not, set the goals and work hard to achieve them. One of my goals is to do at least one thing daily to advance my product and efforts. If I do three or four, that’s even better.

A: Pursuing mutually beneficial relationships with large and small businesses to merchandise the TOYT dispenser. Q: WOULD YOU SHARE A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR FAMILY AND TIES TO SOUTH FULTON?

A: I am originally from Savannah, Georgia. South Fulton has become my home where my wife and I are raising our two kids.

Q: DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING ELSE IN THE WORKS?

I have been blessed to live in a community where like-minded

THE NON-SURGICAL ALTERNATIVE:

UTERINE FIBROID

EMBOLIZATION ARTICLE KIM WRIGHT

U

terine fibroids are often a huge nightmare for women who experience them. They are most commonly seen in women

between thirty and fifty. These hard and firm benign tumors can cause heavy periods, abdominal and/or pelvic pain, and increased urinary frequency. John Lipman, MD of the Atlanta Interventional Institute is the leading specialist for the non-surgical treatment of fibroids. For over twenty years, he has performed a procedure called Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) which treats the fibroid symptoms, enables her to avoid surgery, and most importantly allows her to keep her uterus. The UFE procedure is done on an outpatient basis and allows patients to go home the same day with a small nick in the skin; easily covered by a band aid. Dr. Lipman is a firm believer that the uterus is important even after childbearing is complete. Losing one’s uterus (hysterectomy) can affect a woman psychologically, sexually (loss of libido), increase bone loss (osteoporosis) and increased urinary leaking (incontinence). Unfortunately, most women who suffer with fibroid symptoms only hear about the hysterectomy option. UFE has been a revolutionary solution for those women who that have been fortunate enough to find physicians like Dr. Lipman.  Dr. Lipman treated Cynthia Bailey, star of “Real Housewives of Atlanta,” international model, and successful business woman, with her fibroid challenges. Bravo aired an in depth coverage of her satisfaction with Dr. Lipman entitled “Cynthia Gets Her Healthy Back.” The episode gave a very detailed testimony of her successful experience with Dr. Lipman and the UFE solution.  This non-surgical alternative to  hysterectomy and myomectomy needs to be considered for every patient suffering with fibroids that would like to avoid surgery. The procedure is covered by all insurance carriers, including Medicare and Medicaid. For more information, please visit Dr. Lipman’s website www.FreeFromFibroids.com and become more knowledgeable about the non-surgical alternative: Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE).

FAMEous J by Chanel Jaali

ARTICLE ERIKKA SEARLES MITCHELL PHOTOGRAPHY CHANEL JAALI

“F

AMEousJ was born out of self-care. I had a demanding job at the time and wanted a way to relax after work,” explains founder Chanel Jaali, who

taught herself to crochet with no particular outcome in mind; she certainly didn't think of starting a business! After a short while, Chanel began experimenting with different patterns and decided to make a bow tie. She was so proud of it that she posted it on Instagram. Someone made a comment asking if it was for sale. “I had a ‘light bulb’ moment, and FAMEousJ was created!” she recalls. Initially, Chanel took just a few orders at a time to ensure she could handle the demand. As her skill and turnaround time improved, she opened an Etsy shop and added new products. She soon found that running a business and working full time could be intense, but it taught her about prioritizing and time management—key skills that are a MUST when operating any type of business.  “When you are the employer and the employee, you wear many hats,” she says. “I also take the majority of my product and advertising photos!” In the short time that FAMEousJ has existed, Chanel has been able to watch her business grow and even reach a few celebrities!  “It has taught me a lot about myself and has shown me what I can accomplish. It also challenges my creativity and skill set,” Chanel reflects. From baby clothing and mermaid tails to bikinis and slippers, Chanel enjoys crafting creative products, and there's more to come! Chanel’s work can be found on her Etsy shop at FAMEousJ.Etsy.com.

ARTICLE SHONTÉ PRESS 1. EAT HEALTHY & REGULARLY: Time management is extremely

important to any successful entrepreneur, so you have to pre-plan if you want to eat healthy and regularly. Prep meals for the week on Sunday, make green smoothies for breakfast on the go, ALWAYS pack healthy snacks and don’t forget your daily vitamin! 2. GET YOUR SLEEP: Sleep is vitally important to your overall

health. During sleep, your body is healing and rejuvenating. Without 6-8 hours of sleep, your brain and body will not function as well. Have a productive day, shut out the noise at night and go to sleep on time! 3. SCHEDULE EXERCISE TIME: Your body needs exercise more than

you know. The best way to make this happen is to schedule at least 30 minutes of exercise 3-4 mornings a week. It’s a great way to start your day and you won’t have to stress about doing it later. So get up and move! 4. ELIMINATE BAD FOODS: You know that sweets and processed

or fried foods are bad for you, but have you drastically reduced them from your diet? Do your body a favor and replace these foods with healthier alternatives today! 5. DRINK YOUR WATER:  Did you know that your body is almost

70% water? If you don’t replenish your water reserves, your body will begin to take water from your bones and organs, which can lead to health problems later in life. So drink up! 6. GO TO ANNUAL CHECK-UPS: This may seem like a no brainer,

but when was your last physical? Getting a yearly exam can pay off exponentially. You’ll know what’s going on with your body, and early detection of any medical issue could save your life! 7. SCHEDULE ME TIME: If you don’t, who will? Make sure to always

factor in me time. Whether a few minutes of meditation, a spa day or vacation, get your me time in! 8. ALWAYS BE INTENTIONAL: The most important thing to remember

is to BE INTENTIONAL! If you don’t make a plan, you’re planning to fail. You schedule your business day, so why not schedule your meals, water breaks and sleep time? Doing so will help you live to adult another day!
