After serving in similar capacities at PruittHealth’s skilled nursing facilities in Lilburn and Austell, Hudie joined Georgia War Veterans Home in Milledgeville as Interim Administrator of the Richard B. Russell building before being named Associate Director for the campus. He then moved on to become the Administrator at PruittHealthFranklin before being named Administrator of Christian City Assisted Living Center in 2017. “I thought I would be here for only nine days, but this opportunity turned into a long-term position,” Langston said. When asked about his leadership role, Langston responded, “Christian City is a God-centered campus with leadership support focused on helping staff members maximize their potential. Thus, we have a seasoned staff in the Assisted Living Center. When I am not on site, I have peace in knowing that our residents are under the excellent care of our cohesive team. The staff sincerely cares about the residents as well as one another. They are passionate about their jobs and willing to go the extra mile, always keeping residents’ best interest at heart,” he said. “It is a joy and privilege to work here and serve here, because I’m in an environment where I’m being fed spiritually. irque du Soleil is the epitome of entertainment. Yes, it’s a circus but it’s so much more. Every

performance is top-notch. I had the opportunity to sit down with Benjamin Courtenay, aerial straps artist performer to find out how much hard work goes into each one of the performances in Atlanta until November 19. Grab a seat under Le Grand Chapiteau before they roll all 65 trucks out of town. Luzia is a special rendition because of the way that water is incorporated into the show. The stage is specially perforated with holes so that the water can drain back into the pool it’s built over. The stage floor is covered in sand and then painted and that along with special shoes keeps the performers from slipping as they run and dance across the floor. The name of the show Luzia comes from a combination of the Spanish words luz and lluvia, light and rain respectively. They do some amazing things with water in this show and I won’t go into great detail at the risk of spoiling the beautiful surprises.

12

South Fulton Lifestyle | November 2017

One of the most breathtaking performances is from Benjamin Courtenay on the straps. He works over a pool with a trapdoor that is inspired by the cenote, a naturally occurring sinkhole that the Mayans believed to be a window to the afterlife. He portrays a demigod that interacts with a realistic jaguar puppet, trying to earn the animal’s trust. It’s been Ben’s dream to work in a Cirque du Soleil production since he saw the show “Alegria” as a child. SFL: WHAT’S YOUR BACKGROUND IN ACROBATICS? HOW DO YOU TRANSITION FROM DOING GYMNASTICS AS A CHILD TO PERFORMING IN THE WORLD’S BEST CIRCUS? BEN: I grew up in Vancouver and started in gymnastics. I really

enjoyed it until around age 10 when it got to be too competitive. Then I started in the local circus before going on to train at the college level at the Montreal National Circus School. At the end of the course when I earned my degree, there were auditions and I

You can’t tell at a glance but Ben is quite the fan of fried chicken. If you have a recommendation for some great South Fulton delicacies or experiences that the cast of Luzia need to try, please let me know at EMitchell@LifestylePubs.com or on our social media using the hashtag #SoFuCirque. From the color to the music to the costumes, Luzia is exhilarating throughout, from the moment you take your seat until the applause at the end. Besides Benjamin’s poetic work, my favorite part was the Running Lady and her stunning monarch wings and the cyr hoop acrobat. It was simply beautiful, a portrait of the many facets, symbols and cultures of Mexico.

Meet Team Morman The Smiles Behind MARTI Transportation

W

ithin a few minutes of meeting Marlon and Tiffany Morman of MARTI Transportation, you can’t help but keep a smile

from spreading across your face. In the past couple of years, SFL has partnered with MARTI Transportation for various events and photo shoots and our readers and models just love them. Tiffany is the second of five children and grew up in the heart of Milwaukee, where she was influenced and exposed to many diverse cultures. Born in Washington, DC, Marlon was raised in the Prince George suburbs of Maryland. Both went straight to the U. S. Army upon high school graduation, which happened to be during the Desert Storm War!

18

South Fulton Lifestyle | November 2017

They served as Logistical Specialists in the same division before meeting one night at the “Memorial Day All-Nighter” at the Denver airbase. They danced and then went their separate ways. Fast forward a few months when their paths crossed again outside Tiffany’s barracks, and the rest is history!

The couple recently celebrated their 25th Anniversary in the city where they first lived as husband and wife: Colorado Springs—the first of eight major moves with the Army and more than 10 deployments (both earning two Bronze Stars) combined as dual military spouses. After their most recent promotion to field grade rank of Major, the Mormans retired and Marlon entered the civilian corporate sector. As a Service Manager at Ryder, Marlon learned about being a civilian supervisor. While they enjoyed their new lifestyle, the contracting life beckoned, offering Marlon a position in Kuwait for which he was well-qualified. So, off they went for two years, adding more stamps to their bulging civilian passports. It was during this adventure that Marlon had the vision to become an entrepreneur. “After traveling the world and receiving/witnessing many different levels of customer service, we thought the people in our new hometown community would appreciate a luxury transportation

coalitions in the South Fulton and Greater Atlanta areas. A certified SDVOSB (Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business) enterprise, MARTI Transportation employs personnel that are fully vetted, background checked, professionally trained with PAX Chauffeur Training, and insured to the highest levels. At MARTI, they never use the word “driver,” because they believe that drivers deliver pizza, not transport people! Their fleet consists of MercedesBenz Sprinters and a Mercedes-Benz SUV. “We believe our clients know the difference between the best and the rest of the levels of quality and we enjoy offering and providing all of their desired services,” says Marlon. “One of our favorite South Fulton venues is St. James Live at the Butner Road shopping area. That entire strip is actually a lot of fun and is full of small business owners that we support by bartering and offering great rates to their clientele. One of our most interesting clients was the comedian, actor and musician Sinbad. He kept us moving nonstop and the laughs were insane!” The couple adds the best part about #SoFu is the traffic flow and easy access to the airport, major highways and quick downtown routes. As they enjoy the numerous benefits of owning a business in Fulton County, the Mormans are poised to grow along with the new city of South Fulton as it develops economically, technologically and recreationally. Currently expanding their offerings to include 28-40 passenger mini-coaches, MARTI plans to grow the market of discerning consumers in the new city.

Legal Compass

1

TO UNDERSTAND YOUR ISSUES

Any potential claim you have has specific elements that you must

satisfy. While the EEOC intake process can assist you in filing a claim, they are not there for legal advice. Therefore, it is not their responsibility to advise you of the criteria or if you meet the criteria at the outset.

2

YOU ARE STILL EMPLOYED

Current employment with the entity that has discriminated

against you puts you in a better position strategically. It becomes difficult for an employer to terminate you after you have made a complaint regarding discrimination due to the possibility of a follow-up claim for retaliation.

3

STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS

In the majority of cases, you have 180 days from the last dis-

criminatory action to file a charge. If you wait too long, you will lose your opportunity to make a claim. There are some circumstances where willful conduct extends the time to file a charge. However, willful conduct is difficult to prove.

Don't Overdo It! HOW TO PREVENT HOLIDAY OVERINDULGENCE

T

hanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year are quickly approaching. In addition to the excitement and anticipation, you’re also probably experiencing

a bit of the stress and anxiety. The holiday season can wreak havoc not only on our wallets, but on our waistlines as well! There are food temptations everywhere! From the holiday parties and the goodies for gifts to the large family feasts and so much more. So, how do you enjoy this time of the year without packing on the pounds? I’ve devised a list of tips to keep your waistline intact: HOLIDAY OVERINDULGENCE PREVENTION TIPS

• Exercise in the morning at least 3 times each week • Be sure to consume your recommended daily amount of water every day, no matter what • Eat mostly raw fruits, veggies and healthy proteins before and after holiday events • Bring a healthy dish to the party • Keep alcoholic beverages to a minimum • Use smaller plates as often as possible • For buffet style meals, scan the table before filling your plate and make healthier choices • Eat holiday foods slowly and pace yourself so you’re full before you’ve eaten too much • Limit white foods as much as possible (i.e. bread, rice, flour, etc…) • Try to avoid getting seconds, unless it’s fruits and/or vegetables • Control your stress levels, to avoid stress eating • Share candy and dessert gifts instead of eating them by yourself Of course, you’re human, so you may overindulge here or there. Just remember to spend the next few days after doing so on a healthy food regimen and beef up your workout routine. I hope these tips help you get through the holidays without increasing your waistline. If you’d like to get your body prepped and ready for the holidays, check out the November special for my full body guided detox program. You can learn more at PressOnEnterprise.com. I am here to help you press healthy buttons!

Motherless Daughters Foundation

Honors Jill Scott and Blues Babe Foundation at Annual Gala PHOTOGRAPHY DOUG SMITH

I

nspiration filled the air during the fifth annual gala and silent auction of the Motherless Daughters Foundation, a unique

organization that mentors young ladies who are growing up without the support of their natural birth mothers. The semi-formal event took place Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Georgia International Convention Center in College Park. Motherless Daughters, a 501(c)(3) that provides a mentoring program for girls ages 9 to 15 living without support of their mothers for unforeseen circumstances, recognized four individuals: JILL SCOTT, singer/songwriter and founder of Blues Babe Foundation,

a North Philadelphia-based nonprofit that provides a free summer camp for youth, among other services TAFFI DOLLAR, co-pastor, World Changers Church International,

author and motivational speaker HANK STEWART, Emmy Award-winning poet and founder,

Hank Stewart Foundation GARY DAVIS, founder and executive director, Next Level Boys Academy.

Accepting the award for Jill Scott was Blues Babe Executive Director Aisha Winfield, along with her daughter. Judge Penny Brown Reynolds, an Emmy Award-nominated executive producer, speaker and television personality, delivered the keynote address. Reynolds, also an ordained minister and founder of the annual SisterTalk: A Women’s Empowerment Conference, encouraged the girls to recognize that they have power even in settings where they don’t belong, according to someone else’s standards. “Every disappointment in my life has saved my life because I am the one who never belongs anywhere,” Reynolds said, in a powerful, stirring message to which many adults in the audience seemingly related.

“Nobody can do what you do but you,” Judge Reynolds told the young ladies of the foundation. “You weren’t born to fit in; you’re supposed to be different. Every destiny and purpose that’s on your life, it’s on your life because you are different,” she said. “When God has [His] hands on you, there is nothing anyone can do to take away what God has for you.”

Williams also told of how she benefited from being involved with Motherless Daughters and is now a senior in high school and dual enrolled at Georgia State University. “Ms. Rassalyn, thank you for being in my life because I look at you as my mother,” said De’mai, who was raised by her father from the age of 3 weeks. Emcees for the evening were Shaunya Chavis-Rucker, broadcast personality, and division chief for the Fulton County Office of Broadcast, Cable and Film; and WAGA-TV Weekend Anchor Deidra Dukes. Moderate wine drinkers, defined as 1 glass daily for women and 2 glasses for men, have a 34 percent reduction in mortality compared to beer and spirits drinkers as reported by a Finnish study published in the Journal of Gerontology. This suggests that it is not simply the alcohol content of wine that extends the health benefits, but rather there was something unique to red wines that provided the benefit. Red wines contain a compound called resveratrol and other antioxidants that protect against heart disease. The grapes used to produce red wines sourced in the Mediterranean and southwest France appear to have more potent antioxidants than wine produced elsewhere. That glass of cabernet sauvignon is now associated with a reduction in your risk for colon cancer, cataracts and cognitive decline.
