I don’t know about you but I love any opportunity to recognize the women in my life who just make life more rich and beautiful. Our wives, mothers and daughters are some of the most influential women in our lives.
And of course with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms… But it’s not just the biological mothers but the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities, pouring into our livesmaking themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable.
I have mentioned my Mother in the past but this is definitely the most important time to recognize the woman that gave me life, supported me as a daughter, best friend, and eventually when I became a mother myself. She was my guiding light throughout my life, I can’t Thank her enough for all that she did for me and our family throughout the years. This is the first Mother’s Day without her as the primary guiding light in my life and I will confess that at times it makes me catch my breath. Then I get the privilege to meet, and rejoice in hearing the stories from, all the great women I have met in our community that are business women, daughters, sisters, and mothers that have their own stories and their own guiding lights and I realize that regardless of the lack of her physical presence, she will always be whispering in my ear.
While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize businesses owned by women in our communities. That’s one of my favorite parts of this role - connecting with and championing the best of the best when it comes to Charlotte women.
They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way.
I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them.

As an artist, Selina Medina understands the power of art to tell a story, communicate feelings, and memorialize significant events. When she first began exploring the art of tattoos twenty years ago, she knew it was the perfect career for her. “I was immediately captivated with the ability to help people through events in their life or commemorate really special things by doing tattoos for them,” she shared. “The more that I progressed in tattooing, the more that I came to love it, respect it, and not only have a certain reverence for my clients, but also for the art and the craft of tattooing.”
Over the years, Selina has honed her skills and developed an extensive experience portfolio that ranges from doing large full-body tattoos to nano/micro tattoos and everything in between. In addition to creating new designs, she also specializes in reworking existing tattoos, covering up tattoos, and creating a plan for longer, ongoing tattoo projects.
A few years ago, Selina moved to the South Charlotte area and opened Girly Tattoos, providing an elevated, curated, and private tattoo experience. “My vision for opening a tattoo studio was to blend luxury with comfort because I’m not just passionate about tattoos, I’m obsessed with giving clients the best possible experience,” she said. “Providing my tattoo services in an upscale studio environment with a private atmosphere allows clients to be relaxed and enjoy the creation process of their tattoo. I offer a private studio environment for all walks of life, backgrounds, and ethnicities while balancing safety, spirituality, and science for the optimal client experience.” Additionally, because services are by appointment only, clients need not worry about people stopping by in the middle of their session.
By taking the time to get to know her clients and their stories, Selina is able to create custom designs and experiences for each person. “Consultations are key! We discuss the client’s goals, expectations, and budget
to create a plan.,” she explained. “Tattoos are personal, and yours should be as unique as you are. I understand the unique desires of my clientele and spend time getting to know what it is they want, offer my creative expertise, and provide an empowering environment for them to express themselves through body art. I celebrate femininity and individuality, encouraging women to embrace their bodies and tell their stories through tattoos. For my discerning male clientele, they can look forward to the same support and attention to detail in a friendly environment.”
Conversations and planning also help Selina in ensuring that she is a good match for clients. “It is my art on their skin, so I hand select every single client based on what it is that they're looking for and if I'm the right fit for the job,” she added. “More than just ink, I craft tattoos that become cherished personal expressions. When a tattoo is done on a client, they will have the memories for a lifetime.”
When designing tattoos, Selina encourages clients to draw from personal experiences and find creative ways to incorporate meaningful imagery into designs. “When women come to me and want to commemorate something about their family or partners but without using names, I often suggest different options like birthstone colors on particular flowers, because flowers have a language associated with them as well,” said Selina. “Recently, I had a client give me a handwritten note from her grandmother and we actually attached it into the tattoo and were able to replicate her handwriting. So it was a part of the design of the tattoo and my client can carry that really special memory of her grandmother with her.”
Coming full circle and completing the creative process brings Selina back to why she is so passionate about her craft. “I am purely obsessed with watching my client’s face glow when they are able to look in the
“My vision for opening a tattoo studio was to blend luxury with comfort because I’m not just passionate about tattoos, I’m obsessed with giving clients the best possible experience.”
“I believe body art is a powerful tool for self-expression and empowerment and I’m constantly pushing boundaries and refining my craft, making sure a client’s tattoo is a masterpiece.”
mirror and see a tattoo that is their vision come to life,” shared Selina. “There is sense of wholeness that I get from clients whenever a piece of their body has been restored or they reclaim that power in themselves when they are able to look in the mirror and hold their head up high. I’m blown away that I am able to guide them and enable them to have this immortalized image on their skin as their self-expression.”
Paired with Selina’s creative services is a distinct element of education for herself and her clients. Operating under transparency, she makes sure clients understand the value of the investment they are putting in their skin. “I spend hours weekly pursuing education around the tools, materials, and products used in tattooing,” she said. “I offer client-friendly information to help my clients make informed decisions about their tattoos and determine what type of tattoo or project suits their lifestyle to immortalize their images in skin. I am also constantly looking for opportunities to offer better, longer-lasting products or select products that make my clients more comfortable. I strive to make the entire tattoo journey, from inspiration to booking, questions, discovery comfortable and convenient.”
Additionally, Selina invests in the industry as a whole by serving as the Director of Research for the Alliance of Professional Tattooists Association, a national cooperative of tattoo artists focused on safety around tattooing. “I am frequently involved in helping find facts around tattoo products and empowering the tattoo community to better serve our clients,” she explained. “I also spend my time working on education materials for health
department officials to protect public health and provide regulation to protect the public around tattooing. On my weekends, I speak with tattoo artists to motivate them to elevate standards in their businesses and educate around tattoo inks, bandages, and skin products.”
As a woman business owner, Selina is excited by the female entrepreneurial movement. “I love seeing moms and women starting their own businesses and taking that creative initiative,” she said. “Women stepping out by creating their own businesses and taking ownership and leadership roles is driving a creative movement across the board. Women are fantastic problem solvers and have such an amazing capacity for empathy that, as business owners, we can really support and elevate communities that we live in.”
In all aspects, Selina encourages herself and others to explore their creative side and tap into their passions. “I believe body art is a powerful tool for self-expression and empowerment and I’m constantly pushing boundaries and refining my craft, making sure a client’s tattoo is a masterpiece they will treasure forever,” she shared. “For me, Girly Tattoos goes beyond just tattoos, but it’s more like a movement to get back to the magic of tattooing.”

Local businesswomen share the benefits of women in the marketplace
ARTICLE BY MICHELLE W. PARNELL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ISABELLE OLSONIt’s crucial for women to step into leadership roles because it challenges society’s outdated idea of men as the leaders and neglects to show the power, influence, and talent of women. As a leader, I love meeting people, learning things about what they do, and connecting them with others to stimulate growth.
Women have a lot to bring to the table in our experiences and mindset, and those different points of view bring valuable diversity. In my position, I’m able to take the best of what everyone gives me and pull it together to create a successful finished product that ultimately helps the people of our community.
Being a woman-owned business states to the community that this person is bold enough to do what many others do not. This person cares about their community and relationships. Seeing women do what may seem near impossible serves as inspiration and motivation for others to start their own business and take control over their paths.
1. LIBBY GRIER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR/ PRODUCER WYTV7 2. KAREN LEGRANT CEO/PRESIDENT WYTV7Having women in leadership positions is crucial for creating more equitable, inclusive, and prosperous communities. By inspiring other women and girls to pursue their own ambitions and break gender stereotypes, we become influencers in our communities and ensure that our voices are heard and considered.
There are so many women who own businesses here in Waxhaw and I’m proud to be part of that group. It allows other women to see that it can be done, even in a male-dominated industry like the beer industry. It is a need everywhere to have that kind of visibility and diversity in a community.
Offering a healthy, nontoxic option for beauty and nail care
With over fifteen years of experience in the beauty industry, Millie Rivera pools her knowledge and passion to create an amazing, luxury, and health-conscious experience for customers at Freecoat Nails Waverly.
“I have always loved makeup and have enjoyed immersing myself in the beauty industry,” Rivera shared. “It always makes me happy and over the years, my passion for this industry has continued to grow. I love that beauty in itself is very empowering to women and I love that I am able to bring so much happiness into women’s lives.”
As a mom of four children, Rivera understands that going to a salon means more than simply having your nails done, it is an opportunity for a reset and a time for selfcare. “As a mom, I know that it is very hard to find some time for myself and then when I do get that time, it is so therapeutic for me to be able to sit down, close my eyes, and enjoy the moment,” she said. “For me to be able to provide such an experience for others is something I enjoy very much.”
Freecoat Nails Waverly offers the same services as regular nail salons, such as manicures, pedicures, and nail extensions, but what makes this salon so unique is the use of nontoxic
materials and techniques. Additionally, the salon uses a medical grade filtration system, as well as an auto clave, to take the sanitation of implements to a higher level of disinfection. In addition to nail services, the salon includes a Beauty Bar that provides non-toxic, latex free lash extensions and lifts, eyebrow tinting, waxing, and more. The goal is offering women the opportunity to enhance their natural beauty in a way that is non-damaging.
“In addition to offering regular and gel manicures and pedicures, we have the Hard Coat Mani, which is a nontoxic, buildable gel that we build over your nails. This is considered our healthy version of SNS. It is very durable and helps to grow your nails, but it also protects the integrity of your natural nails,” Rivera explained. “We also provide CONTINUED
nail extensions, so instead of doing the toxic acrylic nails that are offered in traditional salons, we offer the extension coat which is a nail tip that we apply to your nail and then we use a nontoxic buildable gel that goes over the tip.”
Rivera understands that women can be hesitant to try something new, but she is confident that once someone has tried this new, healthier way of nail care and beauty enhancement, they will love it. “People are so used to what they know and has been established for years, which is what traditional salons offer with very toxic materials and includes harsh smells and chemicals,” she said. “I want women to know that there is another option which is cleaner and provides high quality, nontoxic services with very little difference in price. We take care of our bodies with the things we wear, and we like to buy nice things to
look pretty. We don’t cut corners in those areas, so why not try something that is a higher quality for our nails and meets our manicure and pedicure needs.”
Rivera opened her business last fall at the urging of a friend and fellow female entrepreneur and she finds it very encouraging to see other women step out and open their own businesses as well. “When I see other women opening a business, it's like we automatically have a connection,” she shared. “I love that they have a business too and I want to support them and help them just as people have helped me because seeing another woman business owner encourages other women to want to do it as well.”
When it comes to opening a business, Rivera encourages women to seek out a solid support system as they work to develop their creative ideas and bring them to fruition. “Surround yourself with people who believe in you and surround yourself with friends and family who speak life to you,” she said. “Ultimately you have to believe in yourself and your passion, but it is so encouraging when the people around you support you and give you the push you really need to take the next steps.”
Freecoat Nails Waverly is located at 11301 Golf Links Drive North Unit 101 in Charlotte. For more information and to book an appointment online, visit www.freecoatnails.com and search for the Waverly Location, or call 704-741-2297 to speak to someone at the salon.
Wellness isn’t about restricting — it’s really about giving. Giving to yourself and to your body in a way that allows them both to thrive. The cool part? The things that give to your body naturally give to your mind, your hormones, your earth, your relationships, and so on — it’s all beautifully interconnected in that way.
Work in partnership with your body. Listen to it, support it, give to it, forgive it — and I promise it’ll give back. Repeat after me: I love myself as the most important and committed partner I will ever have
Eat your greens, cook at home, choose local produce and quality meats, don’t be scared of healthy fats — but also support local farmers, move in a way that makes your body and mind feel good, prioritize times of mindfulness and stillness, fuel your body in a way that is sustainable for both you and the planet, practice gratitude and empathy, give yourself grace when you lose routine, don’t try to make changes overnight, ditch the guilt, and always always be kind to yourself.

Growing up, several women poured into Tracy Frick’s life and inspired her to chase her dreams. “From a young age, my mother taught me that an education and a strong work ethic were the keys to success. She always did everything she possibly could to help that happen,” shared Frick, who worked and paid her way through undergraduate and law school. “My 4-H leader was also so influential in my life and taught me to always give back to the community. She would remind me that it doesn't matter what situation you're in, someone else is in a worse situation. So, it's always good to help people.”
Helping people is exactly what Frick does as an attorney at The Frick Firm. In 2008, Frick and a partner founded the firm when she was only 29 years old. She handles the legal aspects of creating a corporation for new businesses and serving as a legal representative for real estate transactions, which is required in both North and South Carolina. “Generally speaking, I practice happy, helping law without the courtroom or debates,” she said. “I like to do things that empower
others and buying your first home is very empowering. It's the American dream and I enjoy being part of helping that happen. I love to see people happy.”
Frick also works with clients to protect their legacy through estate planning. “With estate planning, people have often heard of having a Will, but rarely heard of a Trust,” she explained. “It is important to understand the difference between the two. Whether a client goes with a Will or a Trust varies with the situation, but regardless, the power to decide what happens with your money after you passed away is really a big deal.”
By staying involved in the community through serving on various committees and non-profit organizations in Charlotte and surrounding areas, Frick is now inspiring a younger generation to be brave and reach their goals. “I've always loved to give back to the community and I especially love empowering young people,” she shared. “It's extremely important to help those who haven't gotten to where you are yet. If it is help with a resume or a suit for a business interview, anything you can do to help younger America be the best they can be is a good thing.”
