etractors of our Southern city may scoff at the notion that our city is a mecca of vibrant arts and culture. This issue proves them wrong. It’s a testament to our thriving arts scene, a scene that’s flourished in the past decade, expanded to include artists of all mediums and a broader definition of culture that encompasses people of all backgrounds, races, genders and cultures.

A day well spent in the Queen City offers all types of aesthetic, creative experiences: art from all areas of the globe and all spans of time, an introspective peering into our Southern history, delicate and modern flavors on artful plates, and a symphonic ode savored alongside a crisp brew. We may have traditional values, but that doesn’t mean we’re not modern in our aesthetics and pursuits, avant-garde in our art and proud of our culture. We can make the best tea this side of the Mississippi and smile real sweet, but we can also propose cogent commentary on modern art and boost our community and culture from the inside out. “Each day, Charlotte is growing into a leading arts and culture city in the South,” says the McColl Center’s Armando Bellmas. It’s a sentiment that comes up again and again in this issue, articulated from the mouths of curators and directors, chefs and musicians. And it’s the sentiment that drives this magazine—not just in the Art & Culture issue, but every issue.

the creative, seasonal menus at Evoke. These are dishes inspired by the local and the international alike, foreign favorites reimagined with Charlottean ingredients. Chef Oscar’s journey to Charlotte, and to cooking, was seemingly preordained. “I was inspired by watching my grandmother cook when I was young, although I didn’t think I’d follow that path,” he says, instead assuming he’d follow his father into carpentry. But after taking part-time culinary classes, he realized food was his passion. After touring the kitchens of Canada’s growing food scene, Chef Oscar landed in Charlotte, where he’d eventually meet his wife, start a family, and move to Evoke. Through it all, his philosophy has remained simple: “My philosophy and cooking style would be to respect the ingredients and use the correct techniques to prepare them,” says Chef Oscar. “If you start with a great product you will have great tasting food.” Chef Oscar’s excited that this ideology is gaining traction in the Queen City. “I’m very excited to see Charlotte hitting the lists of ‘foodie cities,’” he says. And it’s certainly a philosophy that’s apparent at Evoke, where the menus change seasonally to accommodate fresh, local ingredients. Chef Oscar’s next menu, for example, will include this butternut squash agnolotti with parmesan brodo.

Basic Egg Pasta Dough

Parmesan Brodo

4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour

the equator

1 1/4 pounds butternut squash

1 onion, halved

(or pumpkin, if desired)

4 sprigs fresh oregano

4 ounces amaretti cookies,

2 sprigs fresh thyme 1 bay leaf

crumbled 1 1/4 cups Parmigiano Reggiano,

1 teaspoon salt, plus for pasta water

grated 1 tablespoon lemon zest, grated Salt, to taste

FOR THE BUTTERNUT SQUASH FILLING:

1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Cut the squash into large slices, remove the seeds and pulp, and bake until soft (about 30 minutes). Remove the squash from the oven and let cool. 2. Once cool, scrape the flesh of the squash off the rind and wrap it in a kitchen towel. Place in a colander and let drain for 10 minutes. 3. Combine the amaretti cookies, Parmigiano Reggiano and lemon zest. Add the drained squash and a pinch of salt, and stir until the filling is smooth and fully combined. 4. Place the mixture in disposable plastic bag and set aside. 5. Roll out the egg pasta dough to form a thin sheet about 3.5 x 15 inches long. 6. Cut the tip of the piping bag with the filling and squeeze the filling at the edge of the pasta sheet. 7. Roll the pasta dough around the filling making sure that it wraps around 1 1/2 folds. 8. Start pinching the long pasta into 1 inch morsels, making sure to pinch both ends of the agnolotti. Continue doing the same until you finish the sheet. 9. With a pasta cutter, start in between each morsel creating the a 1-inch agnolotti. TO MAKE THE SAUCE:

1. In a large saucepan, combine the Parmesan rinds, carrots, celery, garlic, onions, oregano, thyme, bay leaf and salt. 2. Add 8 cups water and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Simmer the broth for 1 hour and 15 minutes, adjusting the heat to maintain a simmer and stirring occasionally. 3. Strain into a clean saucepan and keep warm over low heat. TO COOK THE PASTA:

1. Place 6 quarts of water in large pot with salt and bring to a boil. 2. Drop the agnolotti and cook for 3 minutes or until al dente. 3. Drain, toss with olive oil and let cool. TO FINISH THE DISH:

1. Place 1/2 cup of the parmesan brodo in sautéed pan and place the agnolotti in pan and reheat. 2. Adjust seasoning to taste and finish with fresh parmesan and fresh sage. March 2017 | South Charlotte Lifestyle

McCOLL CENTER FOR ART & INNOVATION If you need proof of Charlotte’s status as an artist’s hub, look no further than the McColl Center for Art & Innovation. “Artists come to McColl Center from all over the world and just around the block,” explains Director of Marketing & Communications Armando Bellmas. Since 1999, McColl Center has hosted artists of all mediums from destinations around the world, from Cuba to Japan to our own South Park. The artists at McColl Center aren’t recluses; while here, they become an integral part of Charlotte’s fabric and important pieces of our developing art scene. “The majority of McColl Center’s artists-in-residence incorporate some form of social practice into their work,” says Bellmas. “This means they’re out in the community collaborating on artworks, helping kids and adults to think creatively, and making our city a more vibrant place to live.” McColl Center also hosts exhibitions, workshops with local artists, and music and cultural programs to engage the community in the arts. The building itself is a work of art, too, a renovated neo-gothic church on North Tryon Street. Like the Levine, the McColl

THE HARVEY B. GANTT CENTER FOR AFRICAN-AMERICAN ARTS + CULTURE According to the mission statement of The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture, named for our city’s first black mayor, the purpose of the institution is to “present, preserve and celebrate excellence in the art, history and culture of African-Americans and those of African descent.” Their latest exhibition, curated by Dexter Wimberly, certainly upholds those tenets. “It’s a well-worn story that black artists have made contributions to all aspects of art, but have also been left out of history books,” says the curator, who hails from Brooklyn but invests much of his time and research in the artists and museums of the South. “A museum focusing on showing the work of black artists is so important; there’s just not enough diversity yet.” In The Future is Abstract, Wimberly has gathered the varied works of four prominent black artists whose work is defined under the broad umbrella of “abstract.” The four artists—Rushern Baker, DeShawn Dumas, Torkwase Dyson and Brenna Youngblood—all gain inspiration from the current and historical African American experience, using their art to comment on sociopolitical conditions, ethics and modern urbanity. “This is engaging work that’s not just aesthetically provocative and beautiful, it’s also dealing with issues that affect all The Gantt Center is physical proof of the cultur-

Our mission is

Though such exhibits usually take years of development, Hill made the decision to unveil the rapid-response exhibit K(NO)W Justice K(NO)W Peace last month. The exhibit joins a series of programs that prompt healthy discussion about what is means to live in the South today. “We’ve always made Charlotte think, and sometimes I hope we can make Charlotte laugh and celebrate the strengths of this city and the wonderful achievements.”

The sheer span of artwork found at the Mint is astounding. “We host various special exhibitions on a variety of scales, with four to five large scale exhibitions per year and a variety of smaller scale shows,” Stuhlman points out. “Our permanent collection is deep, so there are always new things rotating into those galleries too, plus new acqui-

sitions and gifts.” There’s always something new to see at the Mint. Take, for example, the upcoming Wyeth family exhibition, which opens on March 11. For over a century, the Wyeths have created works that delve into the American consciousness and our imaginations. “I oversee the American art collection, and it’s an amazing opportunity to have works by one member of the family, let alone the whole family,” Stuhlman says excitedly. Visitors of the Mint can catch the collection through August 13. It’s much more than a mere gallery. “We also have programs that are deeply engaged with our local communities,” Stuhlman notes. After-school programs, community programming, and classes keep the Mint bustling. Their multi-faceted programming is a trait common among our Charlotte cultural venues. “So many of our galleries and museums are trying to pull together recently, to collaborate and let people know how much there is here,” Stuhlman says of the local scene.

When I am playing orchestral music I would say Holst "The Planets" and Elgar "Enigma Variations" are two of my favorites. For cello, I have to say that J.S. By knocking on doors with determination, a strong work ethic, and hustle, Darin quickly made the most of the opportunities that presented themselves. His niche? Homeowners who could not afford a traditional lawn maintenance company, but did not have time to maintain their own lawns. Darin quickly had over 100 customers. Darin and his high-school sweetheart, Heather, put their heads together to establish Metro Greenscape. The two had no money, no post-secondary education, and very little support – but they did possess tremendous passion and vision. Over time, their company has developed from two motivated teens into a turn-key outdoor living, landscape design and build company that is one of the largest in the Charlotte area.

Over the years, Darin and Heather built a team culture that has withstood droughts and extreme rain, downturns in the economy, and now a lack of available qualified labor resources. When others advised bankruptcy during the Great Recession, the Brockelbanks knew this was not an option. They cut back and persevered; as a result their organization has an internal tenacity with key supplier relationships that are both stronger because of their fortitude.

With a reputation for quality work and reliability, the company gained new customers wanting more expansive projects. Initially focusing mainly on lawncare, the Metro Greenscape has grown into a premier landscape, hardscape, and aquascape designer and installer over time. What does this mean? “If our customer can dream it, we can design it, and we can build it,” explains Darin. Their projects now range from simple patio and firepit projects to entire backyard remodels, pond installations, pool escapes, and more. They have won countless awards and gained recognition even regionally for their creative builds. At the end of the day, though, there is something more important to the Brockelbanks. “My new role is Chief Visionary for Metro Greenscape,” explains Darin. He has challenged his constantly growing staff to live out the company’s core value: to impact people and change lives. Knowing that their products truly bring people together and create relationships, they have worked to ensure that this transcends into their staff. “We have instituted a ‘caring program’, to touch our employees on a physical, emotional, and spiritual level,” says Brockelbank. These values are tangible in the way in which the company does business and interacts with its customers, vendors, and the community as a whole. As Metro Greenscape continues its expansion, it continues its focus on making Charlotte and its homeowners a better place. According to Darin, “Impacting people and changing lives is more than our motto; it’s now bigger than I imagined and is taking on a life of its own. It can’t stop now – this is just the beginning.”

“A

rt is the only way to run away without leaving home”, says renowned creative Twyla Tharp. That is certainly the case for this South Park resident and

current client of Swell Décor. The style that she had in mind was "contemporary craft." Our goal was to style the home around her impressive inherited art collection. We complemented the character of the home with her eclectic flair to meet all her style needs and wants. It’s really special when we are able to have a primary style or artifact from which we can gather design inspiration, especially sentimental accents, which add a lot of meaning to a home. This home is not like an art museum where the art stands alone. When we were presented with the various pieces of art, we knew we wanted to tell a unique story in each room while also creating a consistent style throughout. These pieces are still focal points, but the furniture and decor needn’t drift into

the background. We completed four rooms for this specific client, but continue to add our design touches in other parts of her home. We base our business on being an interior design asset from day one and on, creating long-lasting relationships with our clients. It’s truly a privilege to be able to give art a home, because even though art has the power to take people to other places, it should have a place to “call home” as well.

t's not a curator's desk that defines him, but his walls. Step inside the office of Mint Curator Jon Stuhlman where the

walls serve as his canvas. It's where he works on upcoming exhibitions, working out the layout in miniature on his own walls (pictured here, the Wyeth Family Exhibit). It's also where he, like so many of us, pins and posts his personal inspirations.

To the right of his plans for Wyeth, you'll find... "Two paintings still to be placed; an image of a Marsden Hartley painting that I like; a painting that I made while in graduate school (the square one with rocks and sky); a small photograph by Durham artist MJ Sharp; and various postcards from other exhibitions by artists that I like." 34

"That's a section from the scrolling paper in the visitor response area of our current Leo Twiggs exhibition. The show is a cycle of nine paintings done in response to the shootings in Charleston in 2015. Visitors can sit at a table and respond to what they have seen by writing or drawing, and can reply to each other’s responses as well – it was a way for us to encourage dialogue within the gallery space."
