The Landscape That Raised Me

As an Arizona native, I’ve always found it funny when people assume our state is nothing more than endless desert and unbearable heat. Growing up in Flagstaff, my childhood looked very different than the stereotypical Arizona postcard. I was surrounded by pine trees, mountain air, changing seasons, and snow-covered winters — a landscape that felt worlds away from the saguaros and red dirt many associate with our state. And yet, that contrast is exactly what makes Arizona so extraordinary.

This state is layered with diversity. Within a single day’s drive, you can move from alpine forests to vast desert terrain, from rolling grasslands to towering red rock canyons. Arizona constantly shifts its colors, textures, and moods, and as an artist, I find myself endlessly inspired by its landscapes. No matter how much I travel or explore, I always come back with the same realization: I could never leave this state.

For this month’s Explore Issue, we wanted to capture that spirit visually through our cover story featuring Parker Jones of Jones Ford Verde Valley. Sedona’s rich red rock formations created the perfect backdrop for a story centered around exploration, Americana, and the enduring romance of the open road. The warm earth tones, dusty roads, and expansive skies felt cinematic in the truest sense — not staged, but deeply rooted in the identity of the American West.

While I may be biased, I truly believe we live in one of the most breathtaking places in the world. Yet the spirit of exploration doesn’t end at Arizona’s borders. Whether it’s found along a quiet desert highway or aboard a ship crossing unfamiliar waters, travel has a way of reminding us how vast, beautiful, and connected this world really is.

More than anything, this issue is a reminder that exploration doesn’t always mean crossing oceans or boarding airplanes. Sometimes it means rediscovering the beauty that exists right in our own backyard. Arizona has a way of humbling you like that. Around every bend in the road is another landscape, another perspective, another reason to keep exploring.

I hope this issue inspires you to slow down, take the scenic route, and experience the wonder that still exists beyond the pavement.

HEA THER PRANITIS SHARES HOW MEANINGFUL TRAVEL TRANSFORMS LIFELONG DREAMS INTO UNFORGETTABLE MEMORIES.

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY HEATHER PRANITIS

TURNING SOMEDAY

INTO A JOURNEY

One of my favorite questions to ask people is simple: If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go? The answers are rarely practical. They’re dreams. “I’ve always wanted to see the tulips in bloom.”

“I want to stand atop the Cliffs of Moher.”

“I’d love to ride the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express.”

“I’ve always dreamed of seeing the pyramids.”

For most people, travel begins long before a plane ticket is booked. It begins with a photograph, a movie, a painting, a milestone, or a dream they’ve carried for years.

The challenge isn’t deciding where to go.

It’s deciding that someday deserves a place on the calendar.

In many ways, Coordinated Escapes began with a trip to Italy.

My partner Scott had never been to Europe. We were traveling to Florence for his boss’s destination wedding, but I knew I didn’t want the experience to be limited to simply flying in, attending the event, and flying home.

Instead, we turned it into a journey.

We began in Venice, wandering historic streets, crossing bridges, and exploring the city with a local guide. That evening, we stopped at the iconic Hotel Danieli. Scott ordered his signature Vesper Martini, and I enjoyed a glass of Veuve Clicquot Rosé.

Over the years, that has become our travel tradition. No matter where we are in the world, we seek out beautiful hotel lobby bars and spend time reflecting on the day’s adventures.

The location changes.

The ritual stays the same.

Those moments have become some of our favorite travel memories—not because of the cocktails, but because they remind us to slow down and fully appreciate where we are.

The wedding brought us to Florence, but it was everything around the wedding that made the trip unforgettable. Years later, those are still the moments we talk about.

That trip taught me something I still believe today: the most meaningful journeys aren’t built around flights, reservations, or even destinations. They’re built around experiences and the people you share them with.

The first time I visited Paris, I was determined to see the Mona Lisa.

And yes, I saw her.

But what stayed with me was everything around it—the grandeur of the Louvre, the masterpieces stretching across entire walls, and the realization that some places are far more powerful in person than they could ever be in a photograph.

Travel has a remarkable way of transforming something familiar into something deeply personal. What begins as a photograph, painting, television series, or lifelong dream suddenly becomes a memory of your own.

One of the things I love most about travel is that there is no single right way to experience the world.

Sometimes the journey begins with a milestone.

A honeymoon.

A retirement celebration.

A destination wedding.

A graduation.

A milestone birthday.

A long-overdue trip with friends.

Sometimes it’s a family adventure. Other times, it’s a solo traveler finally taking the trip they’ve postponed for years.

But the desire is often the same: to create memories that last long after the journey ends.

Today, I help travelers plan everything from family adventures and milestone celebrations to destination weddings, honeymoons, luxury cruises, rail journeys, and bucket-list experiences worldwide.

Some dream of Amsterdam during tulip season. Others want to explore Egypt, embark on an African safari, or finally take the bucket-list journey they’ve imagined for years.

The beauty of travel today is that it can be designed around the way you want to experience the world— not the way someone else thinks you should.

What many travelers don’t realize is that some of the most memorable experiences happen between the highlights.

A few extra days before a cruise.

A train ride instead of a flight.

A private guide who brings a city to life.

A cooking class.

A hidden café.

A long lunch.

Those small moments often become the stories we remember.

One of my favorite examples was Cartagena, Colombia, where a stay at Casa San Agustín became as memorable as the cruise that followed.

That experience reinforced something I often share with travelers: the right hotel isn’t simply where you sleep. It becomes part of the journey itself.

Recently, I discovered river cruising and immediately understood why so many travelers fall in love with it. Unlike ocean cruising, river cruises

place you directly in the heart of historic cities and charming towns.

It’s one reason European Christmas Market cruises have become such a favorite. Stepping off the ship into centuries-old town squares filled with twinkling lights, local traditions, and seasonal celebrations feels like entering a storybook.

The most memorable journeys often combine multiple styles of travel—a river cruise paired with a luxury rail journey, an African safari followed by time to slow down and reflect, or a destination wedding transformed into a multi-city European adventure.

These aren’t simply vacations.

They’re experiences thoughtfully designed around what matters most to you.

The most rewarding part of what I do isn’t booking a hotel, reserving a cruise, or building an itinerary.

It’s helping someone turn a dream they’ve talked about for years into a memory they’ll carry for the rest of their life.

The anniversary trip they’ve postponed.

The retirement celebration they’ve always imagined.

The Christmas Market cruise they’ve saved screenshots of for years.

The family trip everyone keeps talking about but never seems to schedule.

The bucket-list experience they can’t stop thinking about.

Over the years, I’ve learned that travelers rarely regret taking the trip.

They regret waiting.

There will always be another project, another obligation, another reason to put it off until next year.

But some of life’s most meaningful moments deserve more than “someday.”

So I’ll leave you with the same question I often ask my clients:

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Perhaps that’s the journey worth planning next.

The 10% Target Mindset

Jen Cohen ON THE PRACTICE OF ASKING FOR WHAT YOU WANT

Winnipeg in the winter, and a 17-year-old waits 45 minutes in the cold for Keanu Reeves. Her fingers are numb. She is not there for an autograph. She is there to ask him to appear in her audition tape for MuchMusic, Canada’s MTV. When he finally agrees, she writes her number on a gum wrapper with a borrowed lip liner.

He calls days later.

That 17-year-old was Jen Cohen — fitness expert, host of the Habits & Hustle podcast, and best-selling author. She has built a career on the premise her frostbitten afternoon proved. She calls the practice the 10% Target: 10 attempts at whatever you want most in life.

The premise is simple. Most people never make one attempt. Almost nobody makes two. The math works in favor of the person who keeps going.

The top-rated Habits & Hustle podcast has logged hundreds of conversations with high performers and the people who study what the body does to the mind. Her TEDx talk, The Secret to Getting Anything You Want in Life, has traveled widely inside Fortune 500 sales-training rooms. On the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Cohen sits down to share the working rules that are the foundation of her latest book, Bigger, Better, Bolder.

“You have to be the CEO of your own life.”

MAKE TEN ATTEMPTS

The door opens, or another door does. The unmade attempt and the refused one leave you in the same place — except one of them teaches you something.

STACK THE DECK

Cohen frames her habits as a wager: How do I stack the deck so I win more than I lose? The workout happens first, and the food decisions follow. The email follow-up gets sent, and the answer arrives. The choices compound in a single direction.

3

DISCIPLINE IS A PRACTICED SKILL, NOT AN INHERITANCE

No one is born with it. The people who look disciplined are running a routine they have rehearsed long enough that it no longer feels like effort. The reps are the skill. Miss them, and the skill fades, the same as any other.

4

SELF-TALK ONLY WORKS WHEN THE BODY BACKS IT UP

Confidence does not arrive by repeating the word. It arrives after the body has done the thing — the workout finished, the cold walk endured, the email sent. The mind takes its cues from what the body proves it can do. Talk follows action, not the other way around.

5

NEVER MISS A MONDAY

The first decision sets the slope of the rest. Skip the Monday workout, and the rest of the week tends to follow. Hold the line on Monday, and the slope tilts the other way.

MODERN AMERICANA

Parker Jones, the spirit of the open road, and the enduring freedom of exploration in the American West.

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY

ASHLEY HATHAWAY

There is something about the open road that still stirs the American spirit. Perhaps it’s the nostalgia of freedom first discovered at sixteen, hands on the wheel and nowhere particular to be. Or maybe it’s something deeper — the reminder that beyond the routines of everyday life, there are still places left to explore, horizons left unanswered, and moments waiting quietly beyond the pavement. In Arizona, where winding highways cut through red rock canyons, pine-covered mountains, and endless desert landscapes, that spirit feels especially alive.

For Parker Jones, General Manager of Jones Ford Verde Valley, exploration is not

“In Arizona, the landscape itself becomes part of the story — shaping identity and inspiring a life rooted in exploration.”

simply about adventure. It is about maintaining a sense of wonder. “When you’re consumed with life’s regimented agenda — your career, your team, your family — it’s easy to let the business of living override the wonder of being,” he says. To Jones, exploration keeps people curious, imaginative, and connected to something larger than themselves. Whether discovering new landscapes or experiencing familiar places through fresh eyes, he believes the open road offers a peace difficult to find elsewhere.

That perspective feels fitting for a third-generation Arizonan. Jones speaks about the state with both pride and

reverence. “Arizona’s terrain is almost like God’s southwestern playground,” he says. Whether climbing through the Ponderosa pines of Northern Arizona, or exploring the dramatic red rock formations of Sedona or the openness of the desert. Here, the landscape itself becomes part of the story — shaping the people who live within it and inspiring a life rooted in exploration.

It’s no surprise, then, that Ford continues to resonate so strongly in the American imagination. Freedom and frontier thinking have long defined the company’s identity, and Jones believes those values remain just as relevant today. “Ford is widely

recognized as the most iconic American brand,” he says, referencing the company’s history of making travel and mobility more accessible to everyday Americans.

Few vehicles embody that philosophy more clearly than the Ford Bronco. With its removable roof and doors, rugged versatility, and unmistakable presence, the Bronco has become more than transportation — it has become an experience. “Most cars are designed to help you fit into your routine,” Jones explains. “The Bronco is designed to help you escape it.” In many ways, the Bronco represents the modern frontier: not a place on a map, but a mindset rooted in curiosity,

“Arizona’s landscape feels like God’s southwestern playground — endless terrain inviting curiosity, adventure, and a deeper appreciation for exploration and discovery.”

freedom, and the willingness to venture beyond the expected.

Still, Jones believes the emotional connection people have with vehicles is built less through aesthetics and more through experience. A Ford becomes part of someone’s story the moment it shifts from purchase to partner. Maybe it’s a family road trip through unfamiliar territory. Or maybe it’s simply the dust, scratches, and wear that accumulate over time — evidence of life actually lived.

That sentiment feels especially tied to the American West, where utility and exploration have always existed side by side. Jones describes Ford vehicles as “silent partners” — dependable tools that help people reach places that matter to them. In the West, vehicles become part of the rhythm of life itself: carrying families to national parks, towing trailers through the high desert, or navigating winding roads toward the next chapter of a story still unfolding.

At Jones Ford Verde Valley, that understanding shapes the dealership’s

philosophy. “The focus of our dealership isn’t on creating some high-pressure sales environment; it’s about establishing relationships and being reliable,” he says. The dealership aims to feel less transactional and more personal — a gateway to future experiences rather than simply a place to purchase a vehicle.

Some of Jones’ favorite memories come not from destinations themselves, but from the act of traveling with family. He recalls looking out the car window as a child, observing unfamiliar places and listening to conversations with his parents along the way. Today, with two young sons of his own, those moments have come full circle.

Perhaps that is the true power of the open road. It is not solely about escape, nor only about adventure. It is about connection — to place, memory, family, and possibility itself. In a world increasingly defined by schedules and routines, the road still offers something remarkably rare: the chance to slow down long enough to wonder what lies ahead.

BUILT FOR THE DETOUR

From Sedona's red rocks to Route 66, the Ford Bronco Badlands turns drives into adventure.

For those who believe the journey matters as much as the destination, the Ford Bronco Badlands was built for America’s back roads, mountain towns, desert highways, dinner at the Wrigley Mansion, and unexpected detours. Whether climbing through Sedona’s red rocks or cruising Route 66 with the roof removed and music playing, the Bronco turns drives into memorable adventures. With seating for five and advanced 4x4 capability,

this SUV feels less like transportation and more like an invitation to explore America. My favorite is the optional Sasquatch Package, rightly named for its spirit of wilderness and adventure. With aggressive 35-inch tires and off-road capability, it looks ready for exploration before the engine even starts. The Bronco Badlands reminds travelers that the best road trips begin where the pavement ends.

The 2026 Ford Bronco Badlands 4X4 Sasquatch is built for adventure — from off-road trails to weekend getaways and nights out. Rugged outside yet refined inside, the Bronco Badlands blends capability, comfort, and style.
