MATCH MAKER MASON
When Kate McGann of Bernardsville rescued Mason from See Spot Rescued in Jersey City, she didn’t realize he was going to help her to find love. Mason— originally named “Hugh Grant” by the rescue—has played a huge role in Kate and her husband Jameel’s love story.
It started when Jameel Misbahuddin went a local watering hole with some friends. They recognized Kate, but only via the dog park and exclusively as “Mason’s Mom.” Due to Mason, the pair hit it off, and he was able to be a special part of their dates and even their wedding—as the ring bearer! says that Mason seemed to know it was a big deal, watching quietly and intently as they said their vows and throughout the entire ceremony.
Mason, a true mix of everything from Pit to Lab to Akita, grew along with his family and has recently turned five years old. No longer a puppy who absolutely destroys shoes when given the chance, Mason has some adorable new habits. Now, when Jameel and Kate go out, Mason will still steal their shoes, but instead of tearing them apart, he will sleep with them. Although the habit can’t really be explained, it has turned into a fun game for the couple, getting to see which person’s shoe Mason had decided to cuddle up with this time.
Although Mason has had a history of eating everything in sight—ranging from tennis balls to mulch—he has a much healthier palate now. Even though he never begs, Mason has been deemed a “healthy human food eater,” eating blueberries, bananas, carrots, peanut butter in toys and even scrambled eggs! He certainly loves fruit: One time, he picked up a large honeydew melon in a supermarket parking lot and carried it blocks home, making lots of people laugh on his way.
Mason is a complete people pleaser: Dog walkers praise him for being so good. Mason won’t be the star for the family for too much longer, though, as the couple is expecting a baby. When asked how they thought Mason would cope with no longer being the star of the family, they said that just like their wedding, he will understand how monumental the occasion is.

PUPPY LOVE
Gaze into your dog’s eyes and you can see forever. There is compassion, love, whimsy and mischief. Dogs are true members of our families. They complete us.
Beyond the companionship, the constant entertainment, the snuggles and kisses, there are health benefits to owning a dog. They help our kids with their emotional and social development, get us outdoors and moving and relieve stress and anxiety. With their unconditional love, dogs are deft at combating loneliness.
Studies have shown that owning a dog can improve your cardiovascular health. Just petting a pup can lower your blood pressure and heart rate, slow your breathing and relax your muscles. And dogs help you form stronger attachments to other people, and thus make you feel more connected to your community.
And what about gazing into your fur baby’s eyes? Yes, research has shown that raises your level of the “love hormone” oxytocin, boosting your mood.
Now that the votes for the 2023 Doggie Cover Model Contest have been tallied, we felt we should honor the worthy runners up that bring their families so much joy, good health and companionship. RIDGE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS DISCUSS THEIR ART SELECTED FOR THE 2023 “FRESH PERSPECTIVES” EXHIBITION AT THE MORRIS MUSEUM
ARTICLE BY PATTI ZIELINSKI
In 1989, the Morris Museum in Morristown launched “Fresh Perspectives,” a juried exhibition that gave an opportunity for artistically accomplished New Jersey high school students to express their curiosity and creativity in a variety of media, such as photography, drawing, painting and sculpture.
This year’s exhibition showcased 50 entries recognized by the museum’s jury panel and included artworks by students of Jason Stewart and Wendell Jeffrey at Ridge High School: Jiayue Liu, Dylan Beers, Maori Flores, Cynthia Ku and Yuying Wang.
One of the jurors, James Yarosh, owner of James Yarosh & Associates, a fine art gallery in Holmdel, says, “I was grateful to be given judging honors once again by the Morris Museum for the 2023 ‘Fresh Perspectives’ exhibition, a program that nurtures and encourages young artists. The entries were very impressive.”
The young artists discuss their art:

Jiayue Liu, “Cat in the Forbidden City”
34
JIAYUE LIU GRADUATE, CLASS OF 2023 “CAT IN THE FORBIDDEN CITY” (TEA, COFFEE, WATERCOLOR, GOUACHE, ACRYLIC ON PAPER)
The piece was created by first staining watercolor paper with matcha, coffee and flowers to create a mixture of colors and miscellaneous patterns in the background. Then, the foreground was established using gouache and white acrylic for fur details. The inspiration for the work stretches back to the cats in China’s Forbidden City. There has been a long history of stranded cats within the ancient Forbidden City, receiving popularity and showcasing their rich historic background.
YUYING WANG GRADUATE, CLASS OF 2023 “DAY-LILIES IN THE COMING NIGHT” (EARTHENWARE WITH GLAZES)
“Daylilies in the Coming Night” is a part of a series of vessels, coil-built using stoneware clay and glazed using a combination of glazing techniques: brushing, dripping, sponging and more. I was inspired by the shift of nature into more of a commodity in modern society, deciding to delve deeper into this topic by creating pieces that uphold the integrity of nature yet are negatively affected by artificial, exterior sources.
This allowed me to observe the irony of recreating nature through processed materials and methods. In my work, I also explore the following dilemmas: functional vs. non-functional, light vs. dark and color vs. monochrome. Having been designing and producing ceramic art pieces for the past four years—and maybe even more, considering the many classes I took when I was 7 years old—I hope to continue my passion and hobby of creating works of expression through clay.

“INTELLECTUAL SOLIDITY” (GRAPHITE ON PAPER)
Being able to sort through the abstract nature of our thoughts tangled in our brain like wires will allow us to form intellectually solid impacts in our society, punching holes in our worlds to bring them together.
DYLAN BEERS GRADE 12 “FLIP BOOK” (PASTEL ON PAPER)
I draw because I love the idea of bringing an image to life and telling a story. I am inspired by animation and making flip books like the one in the drawing. I try to convey meaning across my art and tell a story, and this pastel drawing symbolizes my love of animation.
MAORI FLORES GRADE 12 “HANDFUL” (PASTEL ON PAPER)
Panoptes Sagittate (whose name stems from the giant Argus Pantotpes in Greek mythology) are arrowhead-shaped leaves, each with an eye located in its center. Often found in clusters or groups, these creatures take on their role as watchful guardians, making sure no being causes harm to another or goes back on their word. To create this piece, I used pastels as well as charcoal for the finer details. Although this is one of my very first pieces using these materials, I hope to continue to experiment with them and improve in future pieces.

Bernardsville Siblings Embark on a Mission to Deliver Hot, Nutritious Food to the Hungry

RICE KIDS
ARTICLE BY PATTI ZIELINSKI PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRIAN GORNICK
When Anakh and Prabir Sawhney were young, they remember feeling emotional when they encountered people who were less fortunate than them.
“We grew up in a house that valued sharing what we had with others,” says Anakh, 14. “We started donating to food drives and volunteering at fundraisers and soup kitchens but realized that many of these places were mostly donating boxed and canned foods or food that was not very balanced or nutritious.”
In 2018, when they were 6 and 9, the Bernardsville brother and sister decided to help in their own way. They launched the Pranakh Foundation— an homage to their names—to manage their nonprofit Rice Kids. “We started the organization to serve hot, nutritious meals directly to people who were on the streets, in homeless shelters or through distribution centers,” says Prabir, 11.
Through Rice Kids, the siblings work with local communities and volunteers to cook hot meals, pack them in containers and serve or deliver them to people within hours of cooking. To streamline the process, they
schedule “cook-off” days at community kitchens at churches, shelters and Gurdwaras (Sikh temples) to prepare and pack meals based on hot rice for distribution.
“We make sure it is a balanced diet, with cooked rice, a protein like chicken or lentils, a vegetable, a drink and a dessert,” says Anakh. “We decided to base the dishes on rice since it is one of the most nutritious and balanced grains, a staple for many. It is easy to cook and makes for a wonderful hot meal enjoyed by everyone.”
The Bernardsville Middle School students have taken their work to farflung streets within the United States and India. They started projects in India and ramped up during the pandemic to help struggling families who lost their breadwinners, were facing financial distress or did not have access to food due to lockdowns. They are looking to expand to Africa and other places in Asia.
Since a key goal is to give kids the opportunity to experience firsthand the benefits of being altruistic, the Sawhney siblings partner with schools and organizations that CONTINUED >

share their vision of creating “The Giving Generation.” They raise money for supplies by talking about their work in the community and at other nonprofits.
Anakh and Prabir love it when their friends and classmates get involved. “We told them that our ultimate goal was to end the hunger crisis,” says Anakh. “There are a lot of ways kids of all ages can get involved: They could cook and serve meals, donate their birthday money, help with the website, do social media promotion or even help us run operations and finances.”
One of their favorite memories happened during the initial days when they were in India, and they witnessed resilience at an orphanage and school for blind kids. “Despite all the adversities, the kids were smiling and happy, which really touched us,” Prabir says.
“The kids were having fun playing sports and reading braille; they were so smart,” Anakh says. “It showed us that no matter your circumstances, you can keep going.”
They say such experiences are humbling. “We are more grateful for what we have. We have built so many relationships along the way,” Anakh says. “We can definitely be happy with how blessed we are.”

OUTDOOR PARADISES TAKE PLANNING
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE STARTING MAJOR OUTDOOR LANDSCAPING AND POOL PROJECTS
ARTICLE BY PATTI ZIELINSKI
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JIMI SMITH & BRIAN GORNICK
Howard Roberts, owner of the full-service pool and landscape design-and-build firm Liquid Inc. and Liquidscapes in Pittstown, has completed thousands of projects over 45 years—and has a lot to teach.
“As an artist, I fell in love with this industry at a very young age; I started my company at 18. I’m a big believer in doing what you love. I’m also all about quality and consistency over quantity in my professional and personal life,” he says.
“If there is one frustration that still lives inside of me after all these years, it is repeatedly seeing constant and costly mistakes made that can be avoided. My approach and goal has always been to educate, inform and raise awareness to anyone I meet, so that they receive the value they deserve and desire.”

Here, Roberts discusses the due diligence people should do before embarking on major outdoor design projects.
WHAT DO YOU MOST WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW?
The goal in any business is to get to know your clients, their needs and what answers they need us as professionals to provide. This puts them in a position of strength to make good, “valued” decisions.
I think our industry can do a better job and the consumer/client can have a better understanding of the process so they can achieve the results we all want, which is value— both short- and long-term.
What I find is that most decisions are driven first by emotion, not fact and reality. This is a huge gray area, because we don’t know what we don’t know. Emotions and enthusiasm are wonderful. However, emotions have to be balanced with an understanding of the process.
It’s human nature to oversimplify what we don’t know and understand because we don’t know the extent, layers and steps involved. So, the thought is: How hard, involved and complicated can it be?
Ironically, I’ve also found that all the information available on the internet creates more confusion than it helps to educate people. I’m seeing clients make the same mistakes and I’m having the same conversations regarding the process or what matters as I did 40 years ago.

Howard Roberts
WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND CLIENTS DO?
First, they need to slow down, which I find to be the hardest part for most. Second, they should embrace the process and get informed and educated. They should know the critical things that impact their goals, desires, results and pocket.
WHAT IS THE FIRST THING A CLIENT SHOULD DO IN YOUR PROCESS?
You can look at the results and consistency of the outcomes of our projects to see that the process is successful. I first provide a 60- to 90-minute consultation and site visit with clients for a nominal fee [$300].
Before we meet, I share our process and explain why the preparation on their end is so valuable to the success of our meeting. The meeting defines the project and allows the client to walk away with great value and insight.
The first item needed is a copy of their most recent and accurate survey. Most of these are very generic. Eventually, we will need an
“as-built topographical survey,” which provides all the existing conditions and grades. The town needs this survey to make sure the client is currently compliant with local zoning. We need this survey to ensure that our design and costs will be true and accurate. In addition, we recommend a zoning study to see where the property currently stands with factors such as setbacks, building and impervious coverage and easements.
IT SEEMS LIKE THIS DUE DILIGENCE IS IMPORTANT BEFORE EVEN PURCHASING A PROPERTY.
Yes! I cannot stress this enough: When purchasing a property, no one thinks about zoning or compliance. They see a property, but don’t think about the limits and what controls those limits. Over the years, I have had to explain to a number of people why they purchased the wrong property or how the limits of their site will greatly impact their intended goals—and be costly.
This is why I have assisted many of our clients in assessing and evaluating a given property before they purchase it.
CURB APPEAL | HOME SERVICES CONTINUED > 48
49 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/SOMERSETHILLS AUGUST 2023
AFTER ASCERTAINING THAT THE SURVEY AND ZONING ALLOW FOR THE PROJECT, WHAT COMES NEXT?
I ask clients to make a wish list of their needs and wants in order of priority. I call these the “must have,” the “like to have” and considerations that the client wants to share. The goal here is to balance the clients’ wants vs. their financial expectations. We want to capture what is most important to them. Plus, there will be items they are not thinking about or aware of that are required and have costs associated to them as well. It is my job to explain and fill in those gaps.
WHAT ARE OTHER CONSIDERATIONS CLIENTS SHOULD TAKE INTO ACCOUNT?
They should think about functionality and livability. How do they intend to use their new pool? What type of activities will be going on? The responses to these questions are huge in the development of our designs. They want to make sure these outdoor spaces conform to how they intend to actively live with them. The more specifics we can flesh out, the better. I’m a big believer in a lot of upfront dialogue, which eliminates guessing later at the drafting table and surprises.
CURB APPEAL | HOME SERVICES
50
If they can’t communicate this in words, I ask them to create an image board of pictures that they gravitate toward.
WHAT FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS MIGHT CLIENTS MISS?
We will discuss the approvals needed, other disciplines and professional services beyond our own—we are certified as landscape architects, pool designers and builders, and landscape contractors—and the amount of time to execute the project.
Once a client has all this information in front of them, I want to know their budget and the comfort level of what they want to spend. I’ve built over 5,000 projects in my career. If they don’t know, I can provide a strong idea and sense of budget.
It is crucial for clients to understand how their goals conform to the property they own or want to purchase. Getting us out to the property early is key to determine if the project is possible, if there are alternatives and what the client would be looking at in terms of time and cost.

The Heart of a Teacher
DEEPA THANKAM IS CELEBRATED BY STUDENTS FOR BEING THEIR “MOM-AWAY-FROM-HOME”
ARTICLE BY PATTI ZIELINSKI
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JILLIAN SPENCER
Montessori Kids Universe Chester, which serves children from six weeks to six years old, becomes a home-away-from home to its students. Their teachers are beloved—and none more so than Deepa Thankam.
The school recently honored her as “Teacher of the Year” for her dedication and commitment to the students. “She’s very helpful in all the classrooms and especially loves to hold the babies,” says Lamis Osman, director. “She’s reliable, dedicated and puts 110 percent into her craft every day. The children love her. They go home and talk about her and all the fun they had throughout their day.”
Thankam discusses her passion for teaching:
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR WORK?
I have been at Montessori Kids Universe Chester since September 2022 but have been in Montessori education for four years. The Montessori/Reggio education uses hands-on materials and firsthand experiences, which creates naturally goal-oriented students. I value this education because it provides an individualized, independent, hands-on approach to learning. The students have fun and follow their curiosity. They learn at their own pace and follow their interests, rather than focus on group

learning or depend on activities that are initiated by the teacher. Rather than learning from books, the children have fun with interactive live learning. And I love working with kids.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY?
Once, a five-year-old student called me “mom.” I thought it was a mistake, but he told me, “You are a mom in the classroom because you take care of me.”
I do think of the students as my children. Parents are busy working so this is like a second home for them, a place where they are learning in every way: physically, mentally and socially.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR PARENTS?
I have raised two boys, who are now 18 and 19. The time you get with your kids is precious, so spend time with them. When they come home, all they want is love and affection. Dedicate 30 minutes each day to give them undivided attention. Play with them, read them a story, ask them about their day. They want to hear you tell them that they are doing well. Children thrive on affection—they want hugs.
When kids grow up, they won’t remember their toys. They’ll remember the quality time they spent with their mom and dad. What you do today are the memories they will have in their futures.

Down the Shore Everything’s All Right
Take an Insider’s Tour of the Best Day Trips for Kids and Pets in Northern Shore Towns
ARTICLE BY NANCY A. RUHLING
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALEX LESOVOY
For Laura Pallay and her family, summertime means the Jersey Shore.
Pallay, a broker/sales associate with RE/ MAX InStyle Realty in Skillman, and her husband, Gary, a risk manager for a Japanese bank, have a beach house in Point Pleasant Beach, which is where they spend all their free time.
Their children—30-year-old Joe, 27-yearold Rachel and 25-year-old Sarah—grew up summering on the beach.
“My husband’s family has been coming here for four generations,” Pallay says. “Even though our children are all scattered in different states now, everyone convenes at the beach house at every opportunity.”
Pallay, who became a real estate professional a decade ago, covers the Northern Shore towns. “This is a second career for me,” she says. “I love looking at homes and doing renovations and getting to know people and connecting with them.”
Although she doesn’t have grandchildren— yet—she and her one-year-old grand-dog, Loki, who Sarah got when he was a 5-monthold rescue, are spending a lot of quality time in the sand and the water.
Here are some of Pallay’s favorite ways to while away the dwindling days of summer.
You’re likely to see Pallay and Loki at Manasquan Dog Beach a couple of times during the week. Loki, 60 pounds of pure puppy, has a great time running and playing on the beach.
“He loves other dogs,” Pallay says. “The beach requires leashes, and I have him on a 40-foot one so he can roam and run wherever he wants without pulling me into the water.”
Loki’s other favorite thing to do is to go to Canines & Cocktails, an event held every Tuesday night during the summer at Jenks Inlet Bar. “Everyone brings their dogs and sits outside,” Pallay says, adding that she sips vodka and hand-squeezed orange juice while

Loki washes down treats with a bowl of water. “It’s a dog lover’s paradise.”
NJ Movies on the Beach “attracts a lot of families,” Pallay says. “The films are shown on a huge screen, and everyone sits in lawn chairs.” Pallay and her husband also pack popcorn and snacks to get the full in-house theater experience. (Loki stays home as dogs are not allowed.)
There are many fishing charters on the Jersey Shore, and Pallay and her family have been passengers on the Dauntless, which has sailed daily all year round, for decades. The charter, family-owned and family-operated, has been in the business of navigating deep waters for wrecks so anglers can cast their lines since 1958.
