LIFESTYLE LETTER
Love is what makes the ride worthwhile While February is the shortest month of the year, in many ways it feels like the longest. By February I’m always over the cold and Spring feels so close I can taste it. Yet inevitably we get hit with more Winter weather, which just makes me kind of cranky. I’m a girl who lives for the summer. By 40 years old, I should know what to expect, and yet every year I sit here surprised by just how cold and dark February is. But not everything about February is dreary, because Cupid makes his big appearance. Now, I know the “Day of Love” gets a bad reputation for being another commercialized, greeting card holiday, but it’s actually the day my husband and I tied the knot. This February 14th marks 14 years of (mostly) blissful marriage and 20 years since our first date. Whether you choose to make a reservation and go out for a fancy dinner or relax at home, Tara Vitollo, owner of Olcott Squared in Bernardsville, will help you pick out a fun date night style. One of her options even includes stretchy jeans, so you can indulge and not feel like you’re busting out of your pants by dessert. Check out her sophisticated yet flirty options on page 20. While you're getting yourself all snazzed up, don't forget about your hair. On page 50, Jeanine Laviola, owner of Renew Salon & Spa in Gillette, gives us expert advice on how to get our hair on point! In this issue, we also congratulate the winners of Somerset Hills City Lifestyle's Inaugural Readers’ Choice Awards! In the fall, our residents came together and voted for the best businesses in the area, and we are excited to finally be able to announce the winners this month. Turn to page 28 to see the class acts that we love the most! We all know that love makes the world go 'round, so enjoy this February and be generous with spreading the love. Happy Valentine's Day!

Flirty Date Night Style WHO SAYS MOMS CAN’T LOOK SEX Y — AND BE COMFORTABLE? TARA VITOLLO OF OLCOTT SQUARED SHOWS YOU HOW
ARTICLE BY PATTI ZIELINSKI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MUSEN PHOTOS BY KAREN KWONG Tara Vitollo, owner of Olcott Squared in Bernardsville, might be in the fashion industry but foremost she is a mom. “My date nights look different now than they did when I was in my 20s,” she says. “My husband, Michael, and I have three kids, so our date nights sometimes are as simple as sharing a bottle of wine with slices of pizza.”

FASH ION F OR WA R D | STYLE + BE AUTY
Somerset Hills City Lifestyle invited Vitollo to create four comfortable but sophisticated looks for a romantic date night. In honor of Valentine’s Day, she selected a palette of pinks and reds, but encourages you play with color if the traditional hues are not as flattering for your skin tone by picking, say, an orangey red or a pale pink. Vitollo is obsessed with her black denim stretchy jeans, which she paired with a sheer floral shirt with red and pink tones over a bralette. “The jeans are fashion-forward and edgy. They’re high-waisted, so are very forgiving, and have fur trim at the cuffs by the ankles. The top is

casual, age-appropriate and feminine but screams ‘sexy,’” she says. In another twist on blackand-red, Vitollo married vegan leather joggers with an oversized, hot-pink cashmere sweater with romantic bell sleeves. “This is also very forgiving, with an elastic waist,” she says. Elle Woods in “Legally Blonde” showed us how smart and sophisticated — and flirty — a hot-pink suit can be. Vitollo loves suits especially because they are so versatile. “You can pair the blazer with jeans and boots or wear a bodysuit and a denim or leather jacket with

the pants, which are mid-rise with a wide leg,” she says. A more casual modern look is a cotton-blended knit that teases by showing a bit of shoulder worn with hugging denim jeans, a leather jacket and boots. “I love the texture,” Vitollo says. “I always feel sexy in boots and denim that fits tight in the right places. The look is as chic as it is casual and comfortable.” Check out other looks at shopolcott.com.

Kindness is Key Patricia Barry of Far Hills Country Day School Shows How to Instill Empathy in Children ARTICLE BY PATTI ZIELINSKI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY HELEN LAWLER, INSPIORMX
38
EDU CAT ION COR N E R | EDUCATI ON
To Patricia Barry, Director of Lower School, Far Hills Country Day School in Far Hills, kindness should be instilled in children while they are young to become a way of life as they mature. Since taking her post at Far Hills Country Day School in July 2021, Barry, who has 30 years of experience leading independent schools, collaborated in choosing the school’s new reading program, Into Reading, and in starting a review of the math program. She is also a member of Far Hills Country Day School’s DEI committee. Beyond academics, Barry has delved into cultivating the emotional intelligence of young learners, guided by the school’s Five Pillars — kindness, responsibility, honesty, leadership and respect — and gives positive recognition to students who live up to these ideals. Students who model the Five Pillars receive a handwritten notecard from their teacher that Barry reads aloud in front of the entire Lower School. Barry talks about the importance of instilling empathy early in children and how schools and parents can work together to reinforce acts of kindness in daily life.
Research has shown that children are happier, have stronger concentration and achieve better results in school if educators promote and practice kindness. Acts of kindness can increase serotonin and reduce depression. We celebrate even small acts of kindness since this creates a sense of belonging and improves self-esteem in all of our students.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO TEACH CHILDREN ABOUT KINDNESS?
Parents should reinforce their values and set clear expectations for their children at home as we do at school. It is essential that parents notice when their child is treating others with kindness and talk about how it makes them feel. As children feel happier and increase their self-confidence, they will want to continue imparting kindness. Talking with your child about being unkind and choosing to make better choices allows them the opportunity to continue to grow.
By prioritizing kindness, we can help our students see the impact of the words they use and their actions toward one another. Their words and actions can alter the peer dynamics in a classroom. Students who learn to treat others with kindness in their classroom carry that out into the community. There will be a positive ripple effect of this in our classroom, in the entire school, in the outside community and eventually in the world.
HOW CAN PARENTS INSTILL KINDNESS IN THEIR CHILDREN? Since emotional intelligence doesn’t come naturally to all children, it is critical for us to teach our students different ways to be kind to others. They learn by modeling. When parents model kindness to others, their children will embrace this and follow them. Children do as they see, not as you tell them to do. Parents can be outstanding role models for their children. Children will learn from the consistent example at home and at schools that prioritize kindness as we do.
WHAT SHOULD PARENTS DO IF THEY NOTICE THEIR CHILD BEING UNKIND?
“Research has shown that children are happier, have stronger concentration and achieve better results in school if educators promote and practice kindness.”

WHAT ROLE DOES A SCHOOL PLAY IN TEACHING CHILDREN KINDNESS? At Far Hills Country Day School, we feel it is our responsibility to partner with our students’ parents to promote kindness. Kindness bridges gaps and helps build a sense of connection among the students, the teachers and the parents. Kindness strengthens a child’s feeling of belonging and empowers them to regulate emotions. These critical foundational skills benefit our students in school and throughout their lives. For the Love of Tacos VICTORIA MURRAY OF SOUL CHILD SHOWS YOU HOW TO CREATE A VALENTINE’S DAY DATE NIGHT AT HOME
For Southern California gal Victoria Murray, the very thought of tacos brings joy. “I can eat them every day. I love the simplicity of using fresh ingredients,” says Murray, owner of Soul Child, a holistic wellness program that incorporates nutritional cooking, meditation and yoga. “There’s a sexiness to this dish, which you create by using your hands to chop the ingredients and then use your hands again to eat.” Cooking together is a great way for couples to connect, she says. “Go the extra mile and put on Latino music as you cook and pour some red wine,” she says.
Murray recommends serving this meal with corn tortillas that have been charred for a few seconds over an open flame, like on your stovetop. “Serve with a side of your favorite tortilla chips — I recommend Vista Hermosa Totopos corn tortilla chips — to scoop up the street corn salad and wash it all down with a yuzu margarita,” she says. Interested in cooking with Murray or having her cook for you? Visit soulchild.life. She also offers gift cards, which make a great Valentine’s Day gift.

2 cloves garlic 1 jalapeño 4 limes Salt and pepper 2 avocados 1 lb skirt steak or boneless chicken thigh • Avocado oil
• Corn tortillas • 2 ears of corn or 1 small package frozen corn • 1/2 c Cotija cheese • 1/4 c mayonnaise • Chili powder
SALSA In a food processor add 3 Roma tomatoes, quartered, ¼ red onion, 3 tbsp cilantro with stems, 2 cloves garlic, 1 tbsp finely diced jalapeño (leave seeds in if you like it spicy), juice of ½ lime, ½ tsp salt, ¼ tsp pepper and pulse until mixture comes together and reaches desired consistency. Adjust lime, salt and jalapeño to desired taste.
GUACAMOLE Chop ¼ cup red onion into a fine dice, add a pinch of salt and juice of ½ lime and stir together. Slice avocados in half and remove pits. Scoop out avocado and add to onion-lime mixture. Add another pinch of salt and the other half of lime juice and mash together to combine. Mix until desired consistency. Chop 2 tbsp of cilantro and add 1 diced Roma tomato. Incorporate with avocado and taste, adding more salt or lime if needed.
STEAK OR CHICKEN Remove meat from package and pat dry. Coat lightly with avocado oil, salt and pepper. Using a nonstick pan, heat on medium-high heat, then add protein and sear on either side until internal temperature is 135° F, medium-rare for steak or 160° F for chicken. Remove from pan and let rest 5 to 10 minutes before slicing. Make a tasty taco by charging your corn tortillas over an open flame, medium-low heat, on both sides for about 30 seconds. Then add some steak or chicken and top with salsa and guacamole and dig in!
STREET CORN SALAD In a large frying pan over medium-high heat, add ½ tbsp of avocado oil. Once oil begins to shimmer, add package of corn and ¼ tsp of salt and stir. Heat until corn turns light brown, about 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from heat once corn is brown and let cool. In a medium-sized bowl, add Cotija cheese and mayonnaise, 2 tbsp of cilantro chopped with juice of 1 lime and ½ tsp of chili powder. Mix together with cooled corn. Taste and season with more salt, pepper or chili powder if needed. CONTINUED > FEBR UARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/SOM E R S E T HI L L S

D AT E - R E A D Y HAIR Expert Advice on How to Keep Your Hair Winter-Weather Perfect and Ready to Go Out
It’s the month of love, a time for romantic occasions when you can ditch the sweats and slip on something elegant for a night on the town. But … your hair! What can you do about those straw-like strands from indoor heat, static from dry air and matted locks from wooly hats? With a little know-how — and the right products and tools — you can keep your locks healthy and looking great throughout the winter months, says Jeanine Laviola, owner of Renew Salon & Spa in Gillette. She shares some tips to help keep your hair looking its best between cuts in the winter months and beyond. “It’s important that you stay on top of appointments. Schedule cuts every six weeks to maintain your style, and if you get color, select a salon that uses conditioning color, like the organic color by L’ANZA,” she says. To control static, use a light hairspray. She recommends Fluxus Touchable Hairspray by Amika, which texturizers to give volume while controlling flyways. Laviola, who is Deva certified in curly hairstyles, recommends people with curls flip their hair upside down while in the shower and apply a leave-in conditioner and
their preferred cream or gel while their hair is soaking wet. Then, let the hair air dry and defuse it for finishing. “The Secret is our hottest product. You use it before you blow-dry and it helps keep your look good for about seven days,” she says. “The product’s perfect balance of camellia and keratin is the secret to the best blowout ever.” Laviola recommends that people wash their hair at least every other day. “However, if you have curly hair, you can go three to four days between washes and use a cleansing cream in between,” she says. People with thin hair should use volumizing or thickening products, such as those from the L’ANZA organic thickening line: shampoo, conditioner and thickening styling products. “Styling products and having the proper tools — a good blow dryer, a wand to make those big, loose beach waves and a microfiber towel — are essential,” she says.
