September is known as the fashion and style issue in the magazine world, and we are thrilled to participate in the trend. Not only are we bringing you fashion that will help keep you on top of the latest fall styles, but we are also sharing a stylish interior space and a new Italian hotspot to grab a meal. Styles are ever-changing, and the fashion world continuously brings us a fresh new take on something from generations past or shares an entirely new concept for us to enjoy. Each decade has its own unique trends, and although some cycle back decades later, the originality of each look that is reflected oftentimes is connected to the culture and music of the day. I’m a child of the '80s and spent my formative years in the '90s. It’s been funny to watch mom jeans make a comeback and Dr. Martens return to the mainstream. Just a few years ago I finally rid my bathroom cabinet of claw clips and scrunchies, and low and behold, my daughters are now asking me to buy them those very same hair accessories that I thought were gone for good. I may draw the line at acid washed jeans, but I’m secretly high-fiving that sweater vests and corduroy skirts are back on the scene. Jake is contem plating reviving his metal band T-shirts, a look that is in stark contrast to his current love of button-downs and polo shirts. Fun fact: When I first met Jake in the early 2000s, his look consisted of two chunky, ball hoop earrings and a black leather jacket that he wore even when it wasn’t that cold outside. September also marks the start of school. If you listen closely, you can hear the collective roar of parents rejoicing. This will be a more “normal” start to a school year that we’ve had in a long time. While I absolutely love the lazy days of summer and hanging out at the beach and the pool, there is something so refreshing about the beginning of fall and the return to the hectic schedule we endure being the parents of four children. One of the reasons I love living in a place with four seasons is that it makes each one more special. Goodbye, summer and hello, fall. We shall meet again soon.

BRINGS OUT THE BEST IN A SOMERSET HILLS HOME
Elizabeth Ruffalo, owner of Pheasant Lane Designs in Morristown, loves a goodTake,challenge. forexample, the couple who recently came to her when they were relocating from a small Jersey City apartment to a spacious—but dated— house in Mendham. Their tastes were as divergent as their professions: a yoga instructor who gravitated toward Boho European chic and a phar maceutical professional with a midcentury modern aesthetic. Ruffalo’s task was to reflect the new homeowners’ personalities and create a bal ance between their two preferred designs.

The couple’s master bath demanded a full ren ovation. The result is a highly tactile, soothing experience with terrazzo cement tile floors, real pāua shell sconces and weathered zellige tile.

“They both wanted a sophisticated style, and the wife definitely wanted a style that was light, airy and not cluttered,” she says. Ruffalo started by advising them on pieces to keep from the previous owner’s estate and helped to pull in the husband’s family heirlooms as well. Ruffalo, who personally leans toward a more traditional aesthetic and Scandinavian rustic style, often looks to nature for inspiration. For her, quality is key. “Whenever I can, I source products that are handmade and use real wood and leather. Even when it is not apparent, you can feel the quality in materials when you enter a space.” The office features furniture made of walnut that speaks to the husband’s love of mid century modern design but has the fresh, clean look that the wife prefers.
Throughout the home, Ruffalo refinished the wood floors and selected the paint colors. She employed a palette of neutrals—from the walls to the furniture—with accents of color, as can be seen in the kitchen backsplash.

“The triumph of this project may have been our solution to the tight, dark hallway connecting the master suite and a meditation room,” she says. “We installed French panel sliding doors with privacy glass and mir rors to reflect light and create a moment in and of itself in this previously uninspiring space.”
When she considers a project, Ruffalo always thinks about how to incorporate nature. “I love the outdoors, and when you’re inside your home, you’re removed from all that so it’s nice to use natural elements that add texture and visual interest to the space,” she says.
Letting natural light in is an excellent opportunity to change a room’s feeling, she says. She likes adding mirrors to amplify the light and to open up a room. “Mirrors can be effective—if they are strategically placed,” she says. “When hanging a mirror, look at the space it will be facing, because that is what it will reflect. Do you want to see a blank wall or highlight something interesting on the other side?”

“In this home, the dining room and office are adjacent, so we wanted them to complement each other, but also be visually different,” she says. “In the office, we made more of a statement with a bold carpeting pattern, while the dining room is more subtle. They play off each other but don’t compete.”
She has other considerations for homeown ers to think about in their own residences, like using an atypical door as she did in the Mendham home master bedroom. She also points to accent carpeting as a way to add personality to a room.
Ruffalo realized she had a knack for creative problem solving while working as an engineer. She explored her passion for human-centric design by pursuing a degree in Interior Design from Parsons’ New School for Design. After working in the industry as a designer, in 2016 she launched Pheasant Lane Designs, which she named for the street where her parents built a home when she was a young teen. Her company serves the Somerset Hills, Morris County and the Jersey Shore, but she has a special affinity for the Somerset Hills area and is building a home in Gladstone.

The 101st annual Far Hills Race Meeting—historically known as “The Hunt”—takes place on October 15 at Moorland Farm in Far Hills. The event attracts local, national and global attention, and had 30,000 attendees last year. The Hunt is considered as much a social gathering as a hub for steeplechase fans.
The day-long, see-and-be-seen event—complete with vendors, food trucks and the thrill of the race—calls for festive apparel to match the spirit. To get a feel for the latest fall fashions, I visited Christina Gianni, owner of B boutique in Bernardsville, who curated a variety of outfits for me to try. The looks accounted for mobility and comfort, including pieces that can be layered and adjusted to suit unpredictable temperatures (the shoes are my own). “The weather is usually ‘transitional’ and allows for all the traditional elements—plaids, denim, chunky sweaters, hats—to be featured in any outfit,” says Gianni. “This fall runs the gamut with inspiration from Boho, minimalist—think ’90s—and romantic fabrics mixed with bright colors in accessories.”

Chef Joey Trani Shares Recipes Inspired by His Upbringing on the Italian Island of Ischia
“We were looking for a walking town close to home,” says LaSpisa, who was born and raised in Hillsborough. “Joey’s family had restaurants. He wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps. Our goal was to serve fresh, made-from-scratch food inspired by his upbringing: dishes that you could actually find if you went to Italy.” For example, LaSpisa notes, expect a lot of fresh cherry tomatoes and basil.
The dishes are the creations of Giuseppe (Joey) Trani, who co-owns Basilico with fiancé Kari LaSpisa. Trani, who was born in born in Princeton and moved to Ischia as a young child, attended culinary school and owned a restaurant there for 10 years before returning to New Jersey 30 years later, in 2013. Over the past decade, the Hillsborough couple owned and operated numerous restaurants, but longed for a special place to plant roots for an authentic Italian restaurant.

CULINARY CREATIONS | FOOD + BEVERAGE Spaghetti Alla Puttanesca Al Limone DIRECTIONS In saucepan, heat olive oil and garlic clove (keeping clove intact to remove before eating), add remaining ingredients except for tomatoes. After 3 minutes, add can of cherry tomatoes, salt and pepper then simmer for approximately 10 minutes. Anchovies should be melted into sauce. Discard garlic clove. Add cooked spaghetti and toss to coat. Serve with Parmigiano-Reggiano. DIRECTIONS In saucepan, heat heavy cream with lemon juice, lemon zest, salt and pepper. Simmer until it starts to thicken and slightly reduce. Add cheese, arugula and pignoli and stir together. Toss with cooked pasta of your choice. *Measurements for 1 serving.
