Speaking of Valentine’s Day, here’s a fun fact: February 14 marks our 13-year wedding anniversary and the 19-year anniversary of our first date.

While getting married on a holiday is perhaps cliché, the upside is it makes it easy to remember your anniversary. The downside is you lose out on an extra celebratory day and squander the opportunity for additional gifts and flowers—which could also be considered an upside, depending on how you look at it.

RELATIONSHIPS TAKE WORK. AN EXPERT COUPLES THERAPIST DISCUSSES HOW TO KEEP YOUR BOND STRONG OVER THE DECADES.

WHEN SHOULD A COUPLE SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP? It’s surprising but most couples wait an average of seven years before seeking help. They just hope that things will get better. You should reach out to a professional, like a couples counselor or a clergy leader, if you’re experiencing chronic distress in your relationship for six months or longer.

WHAT IS THE MOST FREQUENT REASON COUPLES SEE A COUNSELOR? Couples report a “lack of intimacy." Many also say they have little communication or are having the same argument repeatedly. What that likely means is that each partner is stuck in their own perspectives and cannot communicate in a way that will advance the conversation.

HOW DO YOU HELP?

YOU KNOW “THAT COUPLE.” The one that seems they have it all figured out. They share loving glances, balance tasks and even hold hands as if they were still dating. The couple that you can tell will be growing old together. What you don’t see is the hard work they put into their relationship, the bumps in the road they navigated, and, yes, the crashes they might have had on their journey.

The first thing you should realize is that no relationship is “perfect.” The second? Stop comparing yourself to other couples.

Meredith Keller, director of Couples Therapy Center of New Jersey in Basking Ridge has been helping couples identify and resolve core issues in their relationships and develop the skills to keep their unions strong long-term. She shares some of her wisdom here.

There are two ways: We teach couples skills that will develop healthy communication and intimacy, and as licensed therapists, we help them explore their issues to discover the root cause. For example, an argument over how a dishwasher is loaded is not about the dishwasher.

It could really be about a partner feeling uncared for, not listened to or disrespected.

We use three couples therapy theories: Imago Relationship Therapy, Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy. The skills help strengthen their communication, enhance their sexual connection and help partners convey their love and appreciation. We want couples to use these tools and skills between sessions so that these actions become their new normal.

We also run men’s and women’s relationship groups for individuals whose partners are not interested in counseling and a Gottman couples workshop called “Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work.”

WHAT SHOULD COUPLES EXPECT WHEN THEY SEEK COUNSELING? Every couple is different, but there is something magic about 12 meetings. It’s enough time for them to discover new insights, to feel heard, to learn how to tolerate the emotions that arise, become more vulnerable and learn and apply the skills we teach. If they can do that work for 12 weeks, I generally find the marriage will be fine because both are showing a consistent willingness to work on the issues.

WHAT IS A COMMON MISPERCEPTION IN A RELATIONSHIP? That our partner should be everything that we need them to be: friend, lover, good earner, excellent parent and support us in everything we need. It’s unrealistic.

When our partner does not fulfill these expectations in all these areas, we think there's something wrong with them. Instead of focusing on the traits that you dislike in your partner, consider what you should change in yourself. How is your relationship challenging you to grow within yourself? Maybe you need to learn to be more tolerant, become a better listener or accept the fact that your partner sometimes will have a different opinion and you may not always agree.

Gladstone Tavern Gives a Modern Take on American Comfort Cuisine

When you enter the restored 1847 colonial farmhouse that has been transformed into the Gladstone Tavern, you immediately feel at home. Just beyond the front door—where Sir Pennysworth, a 120-yearold horse statue greets guests on the porch—is a roaring fire, setting a cozy tone for a romantic date night or a very special family dinner.

Purchased in 2005 by chef/proprietor Tom Carlin, the Gladstone Tavern has been delighting foodies ever since, serving locally sourced, seasonal dishes prepared in its scratch kitchen, where almost everything is created in-house, down to its ice cream. The restaurant prides itself on being a family-friendly neighborhood hub that provides casual farm-to-table fine dining. The menu reflects the seasons, and the chefs use ingredients from local farms whenever possible. “People are increasingly fascinated about where their food is coming from,” Carlin says. “We’re lucky to be in an area with a lot of local farms. Since trucks do not drive our meat to us, we have a low carbon footprint.”

Favorite sources include River Bend Farm in Far Hills for grass-fed beef (Gladstone Tavern grinds its own hamburgers) and Melick’s Town Farm. “I go to Melick’s once or twice a week and pick up what they have, depending on the time of year. It highlights the seasonality of our menu,” Carlin says. “For example, from June to October, we will get the most amazing tomatoes, and in the fall, we get incredible fresh cider.”

On the winter menu, expect slow-cooked and braised items, such as a braised pork shank. “It's cooked for hours and just falls off the bone,” Carlin says.

Carlin honed his expertise working in New York with notable chefs such as Alfred Portale, known as a pioneer in the New American cuisine movement; Thomas Patrick Colicchio, co-founder of the Gramercy Tavern; Jonathan Waxman, a pioneer of California cuisine; and Barry Wine, the restauranteur behind The Quilted Giraffe. When Carlin started his family, he transitioned to New Jersey and has not looked back.

Fifth graders design and open a library

Students in the fifth grade at Saint James School in Basking Ridge were presented with a problem: A town needed a library. It was their job to take the concept through to fruition. In each of their classes—English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Art—they got to work.

They started by researching library floor plans and watching videos on architecture and how to meet the needs of a community. They completed lessons on adding fractions and understanding scaled drawings.

They collaborated on the design process, creating preliminary drawings on graph paper and final designs on vellum paper using architectural stencils. Their project complete, they put on their public relations hats and wrote newspaper articles on the opening of the library. Finally, they presented their designs to classmates, parents and the administration.

It’s not your average school day.

In each grade, students at Saint James School are “learning by doing” as the school transitions from traditional teaching models to more student-centered, project-based approaches to learning. In this instructional method, teachers make the content come alive in their classrooms as students learn by actively engaging in real-world and personally meaningful projects.“Project-based learning is an excellent avenue for teaching many of the skills students need to develop. I witnessed tremendous growth in teamwork, creativity, cooperation and perseverance,” says fifthgrade teacher Loren MacTaggart.

“Children who are instructed through project-based learning reap many benefits, including developing a deeper understanding of the material being taught, critical thinking, time management, writing, collaboration, creative problem-solving and autonomy in learning,” says Suzanne Florendo, principal. “It even can lead to future career insights.”

Take, for example, the candy store that the first graders “opened.” After being placed in groups of four, the students collaborated on a name: Video Game Candy Factory. From that springboard, the teacher guided them in creating artwork for their store based on a video game theme. Each group focused on one type of candy: gummy bears, licorice, chocolate and Skittles.

In Social Studies, the students listed the qualities that described an entrepreneur. They learned about the needs, wants, goods, services and scarcity that occurs in retail and discussed why a candy shop owner should know about needs and wants.

Continuing the project in Math, the students decided to sell the candy for 1 cent to 25 cents to learn the value of a penny, nickel, dime and quarter and practiced identifying and counting plastic coins.

First graders learn the value of coin denominations during the candy store launch

In Art, the students created a sign using geometric shapes to advertise the store, made cardboard controllers and computer screens, cut out geometric shapes for game pieces and created bags to hold the candy purchased.

When the students opened the store for business, they took turns serving as the clerk and as customers who used plastic coins to do the shopping for Base 10 Blocks that were used as the candy.

Seventh graders researched something that affected them directly: hurricanes. They began the project by creating four categories related to hurricanes: geography, recovery costs, destruction and the science behind the hurricane categories.

Working cooperatively in small groups, the students designed a presentation for a specific category based on three different

states (Louisiana, New Jersey and Florida) and four different hurricanes (Ida, Sandy, Katrina and Irma). They used data-collecting skills, measures of center and graphing to analyze, compare and contrast each. Then, they presented their findings to the class through PowerPoint, Google Slides and on posters.

Engaging their writing skills, the students wrote speeches in which they attempted to convince an audience to increase aid to hurricane victims. They addressed specific actions that citizens, governments and charitable organizations could take to reduce the suffering caused by hurricanes. The students also compared and contrasted the other named hurricanes’ severity, casualties, response and affected area to Hurricane Ida through charts and summary sentences.

In Science, the students performed research on hurricanes and the role of actuaries in hurricane preparedness. They investigated when and where hurricanes form, how they form, how meteorologists predict them, how monitoring the Earth’s systems impacts hurricane preparedness and different types of hurricane models.

“I loved the hurricane project because I was learning about them and using my knowledge of them in all my classes,” says seventh grader Veronica Hekiert. “I learned how to use many different mathematical strategies, using measures of center, graphing, data collection, categorizing and comparing and contrasting to make my project the best it could possibly be. I look forward to doing another project.”

MEET VIOLIN VIRTUOSO SRINAATH KIDAMBI PERANGUR, MASTER OF WESTERN AND INDIAN MUSICAL STYLES

Music has been called the universal language. This is especially true for 19-year-old Srinaath Kidambi Perangur of Bedminster, the recipient of the 2021 Excellence in the Arts Aspiring Young Artist award presented by the Somerset County Cultural and Heritage Commission. Perangur’s mastery of the violin includes both Western classical and Indian Carnatic styles of music—two very different sounds produced by a single instrument.

Originating from South India, Carnatic violin is distinct in tuning, sound and style and is traditionally performed while the musician is seated on the floor holding the instrument upright in front of his body as compared to the Western classical sideways positioning.

Perangur was nominated for the award by his former Carnatic violin teacher Sri Vittal Ramamurthy, who describes him as “a very humble and enterprising person, always ready to step in and help in any situation.”

Perangur began playing classical violin at age five, adding Carnatic study a few years later. His musical journey has been nurtured by teachers and family members, many of whom are also performing artists. Perangur’s mother, Usha Kidambi, who first encouraged him to play the violin, is a classical Indian Bharatanātyam dancer. Perangur’s maternal grandmother, Prabha Raghunathan, a Carnatic vocalist and music teacher herself, lives with the family and has accompanied Perangur on several trips to India where he was able to study music more intently.

“She taught me a lot about music, especially Carnatic music,” says Perangur of his grandmother. The two have spent time in Raghunathan’s hometown of Hyderabad as well as Chennai, the hometown of his former Carnatic violin teacher, Ramamurthy, and his current teacher, Sri Lalgudi GJR Krishnan.

“That’s what really helped me grow as a musician,” says Perangur of the visits to India, where he was able to immerse himself in the Carnatic tradition, play music for up to eight hours a day and work directly with the music teachers that he regularly studied with over Skype.

Perangur attended Bedminster Township public schools, where his music teacher, Scott LeFurge, also helped mentor his musical development throughout elementary and

middle school. “He was very supportive of both my Western and Indian violin playing, which I appreciate,” says Perangur, who was able to showcase both styles of music through violin solos at school orchestra concerts.

As a student at Bernards High School, class of 2019, Perangur was a member of the Pit Orchestra as well as the Delbarton Abbey Orchestra, which is open to students throughout Somerset County. During this time, he found ways to inspire others through music. In 2013, Perangur started the Music for Matheny program in which he and his peers performed music for students at the Matheny Medical and Educational Center.

Outside of school, Perangur performed at several music festivals, such as the annual Margazhi Utsavam Arts Festival of the Sri Vari Sri Balaji Temple in Franklin Township from 2016 to 2020. He also assisted Ramamurthy with a summer workshop and music camp offered annually in South Brunswick, with a final performance at the Sri Venkateswara Temple (Balaji Mandir) and Community Center in Bridgewater. Perangur helped with planning and scheduling, organizing lessons and rehearsals and teaching junior-level students. “I have seen him lead, follow and inspire all other students with ease,” Ramamurthy says.

Perangur realized just how much he values playing music in ninth grade, when a broken hand rendered him unable to play for about eight weeks. “That was horrible,” he says.

As a junior at Brown University in Rhode Island, Perangur is currently studying Chemical Engineering and Sanskrit, with a focus on Carnatic aesthetics and lyrics.

While balancing a busy college schedule, he still finds several hours a week to play violin and has been instrumental in organizing a new classical South Asian music club on campus, coordinating the participation of a group of musical peers and the support of music faculty members who are assisting with making it an official club.

Whatever the future holds, one thing is certain: Music will play a central part. “Music inspires me and it helps me think. It’s also a way of thinking for me,” Perangur says.

“It's a part of my life. It’s something I can’t even imagine not having with me.”

When looking for a financial advisor, find the right one by asking the right questions.

“Most don’t realize that the vast majority of financial advisors don’t have to act in the client’s best interests. A minority of financial advisors are fiduciaries and operate under laws that share similarities with doctors and lawyers, meaning they do have to act in their client’s best interests. First, ask your advisor if they are registered as a broker or are dually registered. If they say yes to either, that means that part or all of the time, they don’t have to act in your best interests.

There are thousands of advisors that will act in your best interest, so take the time to find one. Second, ask your advisor if their parent company, or the ownership of their parent company, own investment vehicles. If the answer is yes, don’t be surprised if some of those investment vehicles find their way into your portfolio. Essentially you may find yourself paying an advisor to then put you in a fund where the company collects another fee. There is no need to accept

this conflict. Find a fiduciary that is not dually registered and that does not own their own investment products. At that point, you at least have someone that is incented to act on your behalf all the time. From there, look for education, credentials and experience with people like you.”
