A Time to Explore!

Hey y’all!

We live in a world that values productivity and efficiency, where every moment seems to be mapped out and planned. I’ll admit, I fall into this mindset sometimes too, thinking that the only worthwhile activities are those that can be measured, calculated, and optimized. But the truth is, a life that is too structured is missing something vital: space for exploration. We need room for discovery, for trying new things, for being a beginner. Sometimes, it’s in those unplanned moments where connections are made, memories are created, and trust is built.

Sometimes you just need a minute to BREATHE. A few of my line sisters that are my closest friends went to the beach this year for our annual sisterhood reunion, and it was great to just BE for a few minutes. We didn’t make a lot of plans. We just chilled poolside at the rental house and secured the services of a private chef! It was perfect. If you can slow all the way down this summer, I’d highly recommend it. I came home from Navarre Beach to SoFu rejuvenated!

This issue is all about giving yourself permission to explore—whether it’s a spontaneous trip, a new hobby, or simply making time for those unstructured moments with the people you love. We’ve got everything from road trips to Chateau Elan to exotic vacations in Croatia.

Let’s make space for the unexpected and the unexplored and remember that it’s often in these moments that the richest connections are formed.

Happy exploring, SoFu!

Explore the Pearl of the Adriatic

ARTICLE BY SEAN O'KEEFE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SEAN O'KEEFE AND ADRIATIC LUXURY HOTELS

Dubrovnik, often referred to as the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” is a city that truly defies time. Enclosed within her ancient limestone walls, polished marble streets, and baroque architecture, terracotta rooftops gleam against the backdrop of the deep blue Adriatic Sea. While the Old City’s beautifully preserved medieval grandeur draws adventurers from around the world, there’s a guarded elegance beyond its stone gates and the ever-watchful eye of St. Blaise, the patron saint of Dubrovnik.

Perched on the slopes, just steps from the UNESCO Old City of Dubrovnik, Hotel Excelsior was my quiet, yet luxurious sanctuary with a front-row seat to the Adriatic. From my sea-view room, I watched the morning sun spill across the walls of the ancient city and settle on Lokrum Island, just a stone’s throw away.

I began my walk early in the morning as I climbed the walls high above the rooftops of the iconic Old City. The light cast a golden hue over the stone ramparts as the city slowly stirred to life. Below, narrow alleyways echoed with the quiet clatter of café conversation and shopkeepers preparing for a long, tourist-filled day. From this height, Dubrovnik feels both intimate and grand; it is an architectural marvel framed by the sea and mountains.

The medieval city unfolds like a living postcard. Once a formidable stronghold, the city’s ancient walls and battlements were built to protect against invasion. Vigilant sentries once patrolled the city walls, scanning the horizon from towering lookouts. Today, those same stone paths offer breathtaking panoramic views, as visitors walk in the footsteps of soldiers long passed, immersed in the centuries of history that linger in every stone. Dubrovnik’s rooftop world is no longer just a place of defense; it’s alive with vibrant cafés and open-air restaurants. It’s a place where cannon-studded walls now frame unforgettable sunsets, and every step tells a story.

After a day of wandering Dubrovnik’s cobbled streets, alleyways, and rooftops, I returned to Excelsior to sink into the spa’s steam bath, Roman bath, and Finnish sauna, melting away the remainder of the day’s fatigue. A swim in the luscious indoor pool felt as if I was floating between the centuries. Nikoleta, my amazingly talented massage therapist, artfully swept away the last of my lingering stresses and concerns. Staying at the Excelsior wasn’t just luxurious, it was deeply grounding, a graceful pause between discovery and reflection.

My next adventure would take me to Ston, a historic town located about an hour’s drive north of Dubrovnik famed for its medieval walls and salt pans. Nestled on the Pelješac Peninsula, it’s also renowned for oyster farming in nearby Mali Ston Bay,

offering visitors rich history, natural beauty, and unforgettable coastal flavors. Be sure to visit Bota Šare for some of the freshest seafood and perhaps what was the best oyster I have ever eaten.

Nestled in the lush Konavle Valley just outside Dubrovnik, Winery Botaro delivers a truly authentic Croatian wine experience rooted in over 600 years of family tradition. Guests are invited to sample estate-grown wines and house-made delicacies like local cheeses, cured meats, and traditional sweets, offering a delicious glimpse into the region’s rich culinary heritage. Together, these highlights capture the spirit of southern Croatia—timeless, authentic, and unforgettable.

The rich history of Croatia isn’t just preserved—it’s lived, felt, and shared with everyone who visits. Dubrovnik pulses with creativity, flavor, and quiet grandeur, yet time seems suspended as if the city were both living and eternal, unchanged and foreverevolving all at once.

CHATEAU Elan

It’s no surprise that Chateau Elan Winery & Resort draws a hodgepodge of visitors at any given time. During one particular March weekend, that mix included teens representing several schools for their junior-senior proms, couples getting away for a datenight dinner or overnight stay, friends enjoying a mini girls’ trip, and college graduates taking part in their graduation ceremony and subsequent celebration. Time and again, Chateau Elan in Braselton, Georgia—just about an hour’s drive from metropolitan Atlanta—proves to be the destination for a day at the spa, wine tastings and tours, or a home-away-from-home experience.

The 3,500-acre property includes a resort reminiscent of a French country estate and featuring guest rooms and private villas, a winery, golf courses, and a culinary studio. Golf enthusiasts will appreciate being able to choose between three courses—Chateau Course and Woodlands Course, both 18-hole championship courses, and a nine-hole, par 3 executive walking

course. For dining, you’ll never have to leave the property if that’s your preference. Dining options include a Southern-inspired steakhouse, Marc Restaurant, Versailles Restaurant & Bar, Paddy’s Irish Pub, and more.

For more leisure, in a serene ambiance, venture outside after dusk to relax fireside near an open fire pit—where you also may toast S’mores using a kit available for purchase on property. The open-firepit experience plus opportunities to relax both inside the spa—including fireside in the lobby area—as well as outside the spa on relaxing hammocks made for hardto-leave-behind peaceful moments of this journalist’s stay. A word of caution: While getting in the hammock may bring its share of challenges, it’ll all be worth it once you’re looking up at the sky or around at nature that’s surrounding you!

Another highlight of the trip: the spa at Chateau Elan where I enjoyed a 50-minute Vintner’s Blend Custom Massage followed by much-needed wind down time in the quiet room.

Whether you’re after some me time, a space to escape alone or with traveling companions, or a place to take in activities that can feed your soul and your appetite, you’ll check off all the boxes at Chateau Elan Winery & Resort. And you’ll be in good company—with an assortment of others who are looking to do the same.

Turning Pages, Changing Lives

The Rise of The Library Dads

In the summer of 2024, a simple trip to the library sparked a movement. Khari Arnold, a devoted father, had a few simple goals when he first carried his 4-month-old daughter into the hushed halls of a public library: to expose her to books early, help her language development, and get out of the house. But what began as a parenting tactic quickly evolved into something far more meaningful.

As the months passed, Khari noticed his daughter’s rapid cognitive growth. Her pediatrician was impressed, and so was Khari’s wife. But for Khari, the most profound change wasn’t in her vocabulary—it was in their bond. Daily story times and weekly library visits became cherished rituals, creating space for deeper connection. That bond, forged through books, became the foundation for something bigger than himself.

Enter The Library Dads, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering fathers to build deeper relationships with their children through reading. With a mission rooted in Bonding, Books, and Brotherhood, the organization aims to reshape the way fatherhood is viewed—one library visit at a time. It’s not just about turning pages; it’s about turning moments into memories, and men into mindful fathers.

The Library Dads isn’t just a personal journey anymore—it’s a growing community. From library meetups to literacy-based programs, the organization is creating a culture where men proudly show up for their kids and support one another. Their vision? A world where books are bridges, not barriers, between fathers and their children.

To continue expanding their reach and impact, The Library Dads welcomes donations from those who believe in the power of reading, relationships, and representation. Every dollar helps fuel literacy and fatherhood across communities.

Learn more or donate at www.thelibrarydads.org because when dads read, everyone grows.

At GreyStone Power, our power isn’t just … power. It’s our people. It’s Patrice, working with community leaders on economic development. It’s linemen like Cameron, upgrading power lines to keep your electricity flowing. It’s Jeff, doing home energy audits and giving efficiency tips. It’s Rita, organizing STEM Day for hundreds of high school students.

EXPLORE THE ESSENCE OF EGYPT

After about 22 hours of travel from Atlanta, there’s a warm feeling upon arrival to the ancient land of Egypt as locals greet guests with smiles and words of “welcome home.” The most surreal moment is watching the sun radiate from your hotel room above the capital city of Cairo and the Nile. That’s when you realize, you’re about to embark on an unforgettable 11-night adventure with dozens of Black travelers in the northeast corner of Africa. Here are five reasons this immersive journey promises to give you a glimpse into a once-in-alifetime vacation.

1: EGYPT’S RICH HISTORY

Cairo offers exciting exploration through the city’s most iconic landmarks including a stroll around the most beautiful mosque in Egypt called Alabaster located inside the famous Cairo Citadel. An aha moment is visiting the Pyramids of Giza and touching a limestone block at the Great Pyramid. AmaWaterways, a luxury river cruise company, arranges for Egyptologists to guide and inform guests about Egypt’s rich history for the duration of the nearly 2-week journey. CONTINUED >

2: HOSPITALITY

Exceptional service is a top priority for the AmaWaterways’ staff who are extremely attentive to all guests, including individuals with accessibility needs.

The 72-passenger AmaDahlia ship is a floating oasis with Egyptian interior design and plenty of space for relaxation. Guests can choose where to enjoy the panoramic views while sailing along the Nile, from their spacious stateroom or the pool and cabanas on the sun deck.

Of course, a popular ship amenity is the spa. I highly recommend indulging in a 60-minute foot or body massage.

3: EXCURSIONS

Excursions are at the heart of this amazing trip, each curated to connect travelers to the local culture. Each of the eight temples visited have their own unique ancient style and story. My favorite was Philae temple near Aswan, an island complex only accessible by boat and dedicated to the goddess Isis.

Throughout the journey, guests will also explore multiple museums and monuments. One of the most mesmerizing tours took place at the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in Cairo. It houses more than 100,000 artifacts, including a 36-foot-tall statue of Ramesses II.

4: EGYPTIAN CUISINE

There’s no shortage of delicious Egyptian cuisine offered onboard and beyond the ship. Traditional dishes include Mumbar (rice sausage links), Muhammara (baked red pepper and nuts dip), delicious soups, and a variety of fresh seafood entrees. The Egyptian wines were well paired with meals. My personal favorite white wine was the Grand Marquis Sultanine Blanche.

My go-to snack to cool down during our excursions was an Egyptian Mega Strawberry Crunch ice cream bar. So good! It reminded me of a similar Strawberry Shortcake–flavored bar in the U.S.

5: CRUISING THE NILE RIVER

You truly can soak in the beauty of Egypt while sailing the Nile. Each day guests will wake up to breathtaking views of a new city, lush greenery, or ancient landmarks. The evening entertainment on board features a vibrant taste of Egyptian culture like folkloric-style belly dancing and playing dress up in Galabeya, traditional Egyptian attire.

“The Secrets of Egypt & the Nile” is captivating and offers the perfect blend of relaxation and exploration. The itinerary is more than just a river cruise, “it’s one of many soulful experiences created to honor Black heritage on the world’s rivers, centered in luxury and rooted in love and purpose,” says Jazzmine Douse, senior director of national accounts for AmaWaterways.
