Not sure if you know this about me or not, but I am absolutely a hopeless romantic. I love LOVE and all of its forms: words, pictures, food, art, culture, entertainment…all the ways those four letters can be expressed. I love it! How do you express love? Better yet, what’s your love language? I think mine is all of them. Is that possible? LOL! In any case, what matters really is the communication of love, not how you communicate it. Don't get me wrong, it’s definitely important to communicate in a way that can be received, but if you don’t at least attempt to communicate said love, well, there’s failure in that, no? Here’s the point: Communicate love. Use whatever resources you have to do so, like this month’s issue of SoFu Lifestyle. What a shameless plug! Need a place to take your love for a night out? We’ve got some great options for that! The High Museum and the Fernbank Museum have some cool stuff going on. How about a cool gift? Check. From a cool road trip to a trip to Bora Bora, we’ve got it! Fernbank Museum’s annual fundraising event, A Timeless Affair 2023: Nordic Night was an unforgettable and impactful evening. Love is in the air—with the most romantic day of the year falling in February. And Valentine’s Day, February 14, can mean more than dinner for two, flowers and chocolates. It also can mean a time to create special memories away—and some Georgia destinations within a short drive of metropolitan Atlanta make getting to that destination for doing exactly that a bit easier. One particular example is Albany in southwest Georgia, roughly a 3-hour drive from Atlanta, where you’ll find quiet and seclusion at Merry Acres Inn. But you’ll also just be minutes

away from dining and attractions when you’re ready to venture out. The 110-room boutique-style hotel serves up a bed-and-breakfast-type feel for visitors. The property features rooms for two and four guests and a presidential suite for eight, plus a cottage that sleeps four, with rooms that include refrigerators and microwaves. Buffet-style breakfast is available on-site, and a complimentary shuttle takes guests to signature restaurants of the Stewbos group, to include Harvest Moon, The Catch Seafood Room & Oyster Bar and Osteria Italian Restaurant. In addition to dining, you’ll want to make time to visit the Ray Charles Plaza on Front Street. From the plaza, just feet away, you may take in a bit of nature with a romantic stroll within the 6-acre River Front Park along the Flint River. History awaits at the Bridge House—also on Front Street—which was built by famed Black architect and engineer Horace King, who was born into slavery. Built in 1858, the building today serves as home to the Albany Welcome Center. And there’s even more history to absorb at the Albany Civil Rights Institute, which shares the story of the city of Albany during the Civil Rights Movement through photographs, oral histories, artifacts, educational exhibits and more. If you and your partner appreciate aquatic life, plan for a few hours at the Flint RiverQuarium, which brings you up close and personal with creatures and fish native to South Georgia. The aquarium features interactive exhibits that allow you to experience the unique ecosystems of the Flint River watershed and

includes an aviary offering of birds indigenous to the Flint River basin. End your stay on a sweet note, with a visit to Mark’s Melon Patch to pick your own strawberries to take home. The roadside fruit stand is located just outside of Albany near Sasser, Georgia, and also includes hundreds of items for purchase—from jams to preserves to nuts and candies. Melt some chocolate and turn those strawberries into a special treat for you and your honey as you celebrate each other—and love. “I've always loved suits and neutral colors and stuff like that. Living in Harlem gave me the freedom to start to experiment with fur and bright colors and really express my fashion and walk in a way that [makes me] pop. I feel like [Harlem] really set that foundation for me… Atlanta gave me the freedom and free reign to dress the way I want to dress. Atlanta has been more of an open and friendly environment. I feel like I've come alive when it comes to fashion and design and creativity here. Everything just comes easier here.”

It all started with a feather. With a background in IT services, Ilona Shender had not envisioned what an entrepreneurial pathway looked like. “I’ve always been a creative,” she reminisced, “and I never knew where to put that energy into.” All of that would change in 2019 when Ilona walked into a business in Harlem, New York. “They had pins and feathers and hats…I asked one of the guys if they could put something together for me, but I didn’t like how he did it, so I asked if I could do it.” This ignited Ilona’s creative spark and inspired her to start Fedora Designs.

Initially fueled by Harlem’s fashion-forward spirit, Ilona found validation in the countless compliments on her wardrobe, solidifying her determination to press onward. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic served as a catalyst, intensifying her inspiration. Ilona would soon pack her bags and make her move to Atlanta in pursuit of the new business venture. “I got looped into this Cigar Week that happens every September as a vendor, and I was like, ‘I have to make this into a business!’” This event alone ended up exploding Ilona’s business for the better. “I feel like I walked into a God-given talent,” she said confidently. “I always make an effort to do something that others are not doing.” After achieving some notable success over time, Ilona eventually opened a shop in Hapeville in September 2023. Ilona credits her Harlem roots with her creative drive and says it formed the foundation of her love of work in SoFu. When asked what she expects next for Fedora Designs, Ilona has high hopes of becoming a household name, as well as a designer for New York Fashion Week. Find her designs at FedoraDesigns.com.

This spring, the High Museum of Art will be the exclusive Southeast venue for “Hear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield, South Carolina” from February 16 to May 12, 2024. A critically acclaimed exhibition featuring nearly 60 ceramic objects created by enslaved African Americans in Edgefield, South Carolina, in the decades before the Civil War, the exhibit is considered through the lens of current scholarship in the fields of history, literature, anthropology, material culture, diaspora and African American studies. These 19th Century vessels testify to the lived experiences, artistic agency and material knowledge of those who created them. The works include monumental storage jars by the literate potter and poet Dave (later recorded as David Drake, ca. 1800-1870) and rare examples of utilitarian wares and face vessels by unrecorded makers, including a ca. 1840 water cooler jug from the High’s collection. “Hear Me Now” will also include work by leading contemporary Black artists who have responded to or whose practice connects with the Edgefield story, including Theaster Gates, Simone Leigh and Woody De Othello. “We are honored to present this exhibition, which recognizes the innovation of Edgefield potters—a practice all the more remarkable given that their work was created under the most inhumane conditions of enslavement,” said Rand Suffolk, director of the High. “It’s an important story, one that not only dovetails with the High’s longstanding recognition and display of Edgefield pottery but one that should also resonate with our regional audiences.” In the early 1800s, White settlers established potteries in the Old Edgefield District, a rural area on the western edge of South Carolina, to take advantage of its natural clays. throwing vast quantities of wares and decorating and glazing the vessels. By the 1840s, they were producing tens of thousands of vessels each year. The stoneware they made, of varying sizes and forms and essential for food preparation and storage, supported the region’s expanding population and was inextricably linked to the lucrative plantation economy. The history of slavery is widely understood in terms of agriculture, but these wares tell the story of what historians call “industrial slavery,” where the knowledge, experience and skill of enslaved people were essential to the success of the enterprise. White enslavers and factory owners often marked the wares with their names, therefore claiming the expertise of the enslaved as their own. Only some of the enslaved makers have been identified so far, and more than 100 of their names are highlighted in the exhibition. One identified maker included in the exhibition is Edgefield’s best-known artist, Dave—later recorded as David Drake—who boldly signed, dated and incised verses on many of his jars, despite literacy being illegal among enslaved people at the time. “Hear Me Now” features many of Dave’s monumental masterpieces, along with a video featuring Dave’s newly discovered descendants Pauline Baker, Priscilla Carolina, Daisy Whitner and John Williams, in which they reflect on his work and their family connections. Additional exhibition highlights include 19 face vessels or jugs, which served as powerful spiritual objects and were likely made by the Edgefield potters for their own use. Their emergence in the region roughly coincides with the 1858 arrival in Georgia of the slave ship The Wanderer, which illegally transported more than 400 captive Africans to the United States approximately 50 years after the transatlantic slave trade had been outlawed. More

than 100 of those individuals were sent to Edgefield, where they were put to work in the potteries. Growing evidence suggests that their arrival brought African-inspired art, traditions, religion and culture to the area. The face vessels resemble nkisi, ritual objects that were important in West-Central African religious practices to facilitate communication between the living and the dead. “Hear Me Now” examines the continuing legacy of Edgefield with works by contemporary Black artists that respond to and amplify Edgefield’s story, including Simone Leigh’s monumental ceramic work “Jug” (2022); Theaster Gates’ “Signature Study” (2020), which references Dave’s work; and Woody De Othello’s “Secret Safe,” a large-scale vessel that the High acquired in 2023.
