Let's Go Explore #SoFu! Hey Y’all, We live in an efficiency- and productivity-obsessed age. And I admit - I fall into the trap sometimes too. The trap of believing the only things worth doing are those for which I can make an exact calculation of the time, effort and investment it will cost me. But in actuality, that is really a sad and unfulfilling way to go through life. We must leave some room for exploring, for trying new places and things, for being a beginner, even for getting lost. It is those times that are unstructured and open-ended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered and trust to be built. In the last few months, I've really been analyzing my relationship with my kid, how our family operates as a unit and what we love spending our time doing. The way I made this more clear was to first focus on the things that I don't love spending time on. Notice that "adventures" and “exploration” do not even have to be something big and crazy. It can be playing a board game, walking a new trail at Sweetwater Park or going out to find a new Crumbl cookie or Tiff’s Treats we've never been to before in a different part of town. Or you could go check out the Farmers Market at Serenbe and go jump on the trampoline! Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life. To lose yourself on a trail or in a book. To book that trip you’ve been thinking about, to make time for the things that matter most to you but often come last on the calendar. If April showers bring May flowers, make time to play in the rain! Here’s your reminder to - and I say this with warmth in my heart - get lost! ;) Happy April!

Mural Honors Former East Point Mayor Patsy Jo Hilliard

"Happy Joylanta" Coming to the Silfy Piazza at the High

Housing Developer Vecino Group and the East Point Housing Authority commissioned a mural honoring former East Point Mayor Patsy Jo Hilliard on the Aya Tower. Hilliard is East Point’s longest tenured Mayor to date, serving 1993 -2006. She made history as the first female and first African American to hold office in the history of East Point and in the state of Georgia. Aya Tower will provide 88 brand new homes with affordable rents.

This spring, the High Museum of Art will present an immersive environment within a monumental celebratory canopy by designer Tanya Aquiñiga as its eighth site-specific installation on the Woodruff Arts Center’s Carroll Slater Sifly Piazza. Titled “HAPPY JOYLANTA,” the installation will continue the High’s multiyear series. On view from May 14 through Nov. 26, 2023, it will also serve as a community-based art project featuring signs, symbols and memories that reflect Atlanta’s diverse populations. Atlanta will gain a new restaurant this spring: D’Juan’s New Orleans Bistro. As a self-proclaimed food expert, I cannot wait to establish my favorite table, but first I want to chat with the author-turned-restaurantowner of Eat What You Kill. Talking to Donald Williams is like chatting with a good friend from Nawlins’. The New Orleans native proudly represents the city wherever he goes. He’s the real deal and he’s dripping sauce all over the “A.” Everything about him is authentic—his passion for quality ingredients, creating memorable experiences, and giving back. With his mother beside him beaming with pride, Donald served men, women, and children at the Atlanta Mission. The feedback? The food was delicious! He believes that every dish should be made with love and quality ingredients. This was evident in the satisfaction of those enjoying the meal. While D’Juan’s New Orleans Bistro is a new endeavor, since 2006 he has carved his own path. In fact, it has been noted that Donald teaches women how to walk in high heels. He explains this as he enjoys teaching

others how to evaluate their next steps in business. For example, when a person decides to try walking in heels, before taking the first step, they must stand and then firmly plant one foot in front of the other. He equates this to understanding that in business, it takes work—it may appear shaky initially, but steady yourself, understand where you are, execute it, and then take the next step.

Donald has been careful to ensure mood-setting music will be at a volume that allows conversation. • Drinks to match. Just like the dishes, D’Juan’s New Orleans Bistro will offer drinks that are created to complement the dish. Quality ingredients mixed to perfection.

If you cannot wait, Donald shared a recipe for one of his favorite dishes, Cajun rice. There are no measurements because the dish should be tailored to your taste and should be prepared with love, just the way Donald makes it.

Ground beef Garlic powder Cayenne powder Holy Trinity (onions, bell peppers, and celery) • Parboiled rice • Beef broth

INSTRUCTIONS Brown the ground beef with the Holy Trinity and garlic; add in seasonings. Add beef broth and rice; lower the heat until rice is tender. Communit y Mourns the Loss of Thomas W. Dortch, Jr.

Thomas W. Dortch, Jr. On Wednesday, February 15, 2023, the Atlanta community lost a bright light, an unstoppable, unforgettable force of nature. His work across many industries, through various organizations, with several civic coalitions, alongside HBCUs and Atlanta public schools, in partnerships with corporate foundations, and effectively working with elected officials at the city, state, and federal levels of government always included advocating for underserved communities, and especially for youth. As a member and former Chairman of 100 Black Men of Atlanta, Inc. and Chairman of 100 Black Men of America, Inc., Dortch was an active member for over 37 years. Understanding the life-changing impact that mentors can have on a young person, Dortch worked to grow the organization by four times its size, expanding the mentoring movement beyond U.S. borders. Dortch’s leadership in multiplying mentors has been recognized by Presidents George H.W. Bush, William J. Clinton, and Barack H. Obama. From leading grassroots voter registration efforts to campaigns for desegregating public schools, and always working for greater economic justice, Thomas

W. Dortch, Jr. did not stop working to make a difference in the lives of others. In his later years, he wrote extensively on racial inequality and social change, shining a light on the inequities that vulnerable populations face daily. Dortch has constantly been in good trouble and his continuous unwavering efforts should inspire us all to continue to fight for underserved communities living with health disparities, education inequality, over policing, and more. The arc of Dortch’s life has demonstrated that you can be successful in business and continuously serve your community. You can educate and empower others and give voice to the voiceless by speaking truth to power, all while mentoring the next generation of leaders. Every area of his life that he dedicated to public service is important but mentoring youth was his passion. It comes across crystal clear in his book, The Miracles of Mentoring: How to Encourage and Lead Future Generations. Thomas W. The display of gemstones, most especially amethyst, considering purple is my favorite color, proves an immediate draw. Little did I know that before long, I’d be won over by the JW Marriott Savannah Plant Riverside District in more ways than I could count and ones that elevated this property high on the list of spots that call for a must-doagain experience. It’s a place where it’s possible to find everything you could want to take in within reach. Located on the Savannah Riverfront in the heart of historic Savannah, the Plant Riverside District offers shopping, dining and night-life entertainment. At JW Marriott, you can have your pick of the type of experience you’d prefer by choosing from a stay that features three different concepts: Power Plant, Three Muses or Atlantic. At Power Plant, you’ll find the aforementioned gemstones on display along with a life-size, chrome-dipped dinosaur in the lobby. This part of the property, originally a power plant, has been repurposed as a contemporary riverside retreat. It includes art galleries, a rooftop lounge and on-site options for food and drink, including the unique and captivating Baobab Lounge, which makes for another

escape on property. In a setting that celebrates African cultures, with artwork from different regions of Africa, Baobab serves up small plates, wine and cocktails. Winner’s Circle The Alphas of Atlanta, Inc, a Metro-Atlanta nonprofit comprised of members from the area graduate chapters, is hosting their seventh annual edition of the #AlphaDerbyWeekend on May 4-7, presented by Woodford Reserve. Robert Cunningham and Michael Jones, Jr. serve as the co-chairs. The Kentucky Derby–themed event is a destination benefit weekend series designed to support the efforts of nine metro Atlanta nonprofits and their efforts for service and outreach to emerging communities for elementary, middle, and high schools (to date nearly $300,000 has been donated to support these causes). With an increasing attendance each year, not including a break for the pandemic, and with an increase from supporting seven nonprofits, they are primed for another engaging weekend. They are back at the 2022 host venues, the College Football Hall of Fame and the Omni Atlanta Hotel at CNN Center. The weekend consists of the opening day golf tournament at Wolf Creek Golf Course in South Fulton County and the kickoff party and concert at the College Football Hall of Fame on May 5. The main event is on Saturday, May 6 and then the weekend concludes with Sunday Brunch at the Omni Hotel. Nearly one third of the patrons travel from outside the state of Georgia, including areas outside the United States. “For me, the difference year to year is really the partnerships that we’re bringing on, like Volkswagen and Woodford Reserve again this year along with Fifth Third Bank. Larger partners are coming on that are kind of infusing more partnership and personality and ability to co-brand with us to kind of take things to a different level and also have us reaching other audiences as well. There’s new energy and new excitement,” says #SoFu’s own Robert Cunningham, Co-Chair of #AlphaDerbyWeekend. They are hoping to host another sold out event! “It’s a reflection of the leadership,” says committee member Andrew Snorton. “We have high quality people and high quality co-chairs that set a great tone and we’ve got a good committee that even though we work hard, we find the energy because we know the ultimate reason why we’re doing this. The great purpose is to reinvest in the number of the community organizations.” “People are more comfortable coming to a large event so I think people that didn’t make it to last year because they just felt some type of hesitation during COVID are going to come this year. The feedback and responses online have been great. I think people are ready to actually get out and party this year,” according to event Co-Chair Michael Jones, Jr. The committee takes the surveys and opinions of their guests seriously. The need for their out-of-town guests to find more events to participate in led them to expand the Derby event to a whole weekend.

A PARTY WITH A PURPOSE “There are 10 Alpha Phi Alpha Alumni chapters in the metro area and all of them have educational foundations. Those foundations are the beneficiaries of the event. The Foundations are doing college tours, SAT and ACT Prep, mentoring programs, and purchasing equipment for students on their way to college,” Cunningham stated. This year in addition to supporting the educational foundations, there will be grants that are open to other community organizations. “The key thing is that the growth is organic and the leadership here is passionate and purposeful, the committee members are passionate and purposeful and we know the reason why we’re doing it and when that comes out you’re going to get these types of results,” said Snorton. #AlphaDerbyWeekend #AlphaDerby #AlphasOfAtlanta

“You need to exercise more.” I know it’s a phrase you’ve heard countless times before, but I want to take a moment to explain exactly why exercise is so vital to your health. First and foremost, for adults, moderate exercise of 150 minutes per week (30 minutes, 5 days a week) can significantly improve your lifespan and overall health. By incorporating regular exercise into your routine, you can lower your risk of premature death and developing up to 40 different diseases as well as prevent eight different types of cancer. Not only that, but individuals who exercise at this level also have a lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s, depression, and anxiety. As a doctor, it’s my job to help people understand the importance of exercise and to provide personalized guidance on how to achieve that 150-minute goal. I know that sometimes it can be tough to know where to start. Consider a new innovation called Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) as a starting point. RPM is a technology that has become increasingly popular, as it allows doctors and health care professionals to remotely monitor patients’ health and provide personalized care and guidance without the need for in-person visits. By tracking step count, heart rate, and sleep, we can get a better idea of your overall activity level and provide you with a plan

to reach your exercise goals.
