One time for the birthday girl!! I can’t believe it, another year has passed, and we’re still together! What an incredible year! How was it for you guys? I’ve been fortunate to spend time with some of the most amazing people, like Xernona Clayton and JasmineAmazingGuy.events came my way this year, like the Black Music Honors, The Trumpet Awards, and the Stellars! Red carpet movie premieres, appear ances, MTW Day…I mean I really can’t complain. But here’s the best part: it’s really all because of you. I wouldn’t pretend for one minute that I could do anything without the support of my team and the community. God puts capable and supportive people around me always, so it’s important to give credit where it’s due. The Alliance Theatre presents its season opener, Everybody by Pulitzer Prize finalist and Obie Award-winning playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins. Everybody, which is co-directed by Susan V. Booth and Tinashe Kajese-Bolden, marks the final production of Booth’s 21-year tenure as the Jennings Hertz Artistic Director. East Point and TezzyPooh’s Ice Cream Present “Popsicles with Police” East Point youth cooled off in the summer heat thanks to a partnership between the City of East Point and a local mobile ice cream business. Councilwoman Stephanie Gordon launched the initiative and they teamed up with 8-year-old Courtez Straughter who owns TezzyPooh’s Ice Cream, along with his mother Courtney Petty. Negotiations between the City of South Fulton and the International Association of Firefighters have resulted in a new one-year collective bargaining agreement. The contract is the first in metro Atlanta and one of the first in the state. The agreement, signed at a ceremony at Fire Station 11, reflects the city’s commit ment to recruiting the best firefighters, provides high-paying, quality jobs, sets out specific benefits and outlines the city’s expectations of firefighters.

Of course, it’s not just young people who are seek ing guidance about how to approach everything that has happened in life. Adults are also seeking spiritual advice, especially for political decisions. Unfortunately, there are leaders that spew hatred from the pulpit, pulling various scriptures to back their rhetoric. Murriel counters this effort by continuing to choose content, whether on social media or when communicating, that speaks truth. His focus is on truly loving one another, because he believes people want to know that someone cares and understands what they are going through. Murriel’s reach extends beyond the church to “The Murriel Foundation,” a nonprofit foundation he founded with his wife, Dr Ashleigh Murriel. He contin ues to build effective leaders by hosting camps where middle and high school students learn about career opportunities and how to build relationships (for example, how a gentleman should approach a woman).

Philadelphia native Kevin Savage is an American actor, singer, and model. After performing in sev eral off-Broadway productions like “Dream Girls” and August Wilson’s “A Soldier’s Story,” he moved to Atlanta, GA, in 2013 to pursue his career in television and film. He dedicated his time and focus on extensive training which led him to signing with one of Atlanta’s top talent agencies, Aligned Stars. Since then, Kevin has landed roles on television shows like “The Originals,” “House of Cards,” “The Game,” and “The Quad,” in which he had a recurring role as star quarter back Terrance Berry, as well as the soon airing anticipated series “Hush” on WETV this fall. Kevin continues to elevate his skills and challenge himself with more complex roles. His most recent work includes Katori Hall’s hit show “P-Valley,” Jordan Peel’s “Lovecraft Country,” Issa Rae’s “Insecure,” and Amazon’s limited series “The Underground Railroad” directed by Barry Jenkins. Kevin has also set his intentions on doing more film work and it’s working. You can catch him in the Lifetime film “Single Black Female” as Andre playing opposite Raven Goodwin. You can also look for him this winter in his new film, “A Wesley Christmas.” This is just the beginning for Kevin and he’s quick to state as he has in numerous interviews, “I’m just warming up!”

Patricia Kayanga is a first-generation immigrant from Uganda. Her family came here under unfortunate circumstances but was blessed to know a better life. Her mother is the brain behind the business idea. After complaining about the many expensive items Patricia ruined, her mother encouraged her to create something disposable. Patricia started dreaming and created Ohhs , bio degradable disposable undergarments made from bamboo and non-woven fabric. Patricia wanted to create a product that felt good, with a business structure that served a greater purpose in a girl’s life, while creating something simple for every woman. They donate over 10% of their profits to organizations that provide resources to school-aged girls. This year for every box sold, they donate a pair of underwear to local women’s shelters. Patricia’s business motto is, “we are inspired by women for women.” Ohhs are seamless disposable undergarments made of ecofriendly and biodegradable bamboo that are perfect for travel, camping, spas, hotels, and any and all emergencies.
I meditated on the idea of my business for about three years before I decided to take a leap and commit. After a long trip to Bali for my birthday, I was triggered to commit to bringing my idea to fruition. The journey to Bali was long, and I wanted a change to feel fresh, but I didn’t have a lot of options while in transit. That trip inspired me to stop waiting. I quit my job and focused primarily on researching and developing my business. Having the idea was the easy part. After I had a prototype complete, I began the process of patent ing. At first, I thought I could do it on my own. After all, I quit my job to focus on this full-time. But after hours and days of research on whether that was a good idea, I decided it may be best to speak with a lawyer. I’d gotten a subscription with a service to meet a lawyer for legal advice. Paying someone specializing in patents was optimal because it removed my worries so that I could focus TIPS FOR YOUNG on the business. I could not begin to imagine how I would maneu ver the entire process by myself. My lawyer created a patent in the US and is now in the middle of securing the patent in China. The process of finding manufacturers has been an interesting one. A mentor advised me to go to trade shows, a great place to connect with manufacturers. I also recently joined NuOrder. It is a Business to Business (B2B) marketplace where you can find multiple buyers for your products. Networking, listening to what matters, and tuning out what brings you down have also been integral to my growth as an entrepreneur.
As a black-owned business, I wanted to provide products other than cotton due to the material’s complicated history for African Americans. Trying to find a United States manufacturer to create a prototype for me was the hardest. I had researched the most sustainable fabrics and knew I wanted to use bamboo because of its numerous eco-friendly and hygienic benefits.

DONNA: Give yourself grace. Motherhood is no joke and entrepreneurship is not for the weak. There are days when you will be motivated and days when you aren’t so inspired. Giving your self grace and keeping your vision in mind will help get you through the more strenuous days.
DWAYNA: No mompreneur is perfect; as life and family continue to grow, I’d had to make constant tweaks to ensure that balance is a part of my daily routine. When starting in busi ness, it’s easy to throw yourself into the vision and work yourself to burnout. Trust me, I’ve been there and done that. I began practicing grace and mapping out my ideal day, week, or month. Balance for me looks like this:
• Separating work and family time
• Prioritizing the essential things first ( things that add value to my business and home)

Many individuals invest in companies that they are familiar with and have no true concept as to whether the company is a good INVESTMENT. The COVID pandemic has seen individuals start to use the stock market as another stream of income or as a wealth-building source. While there are numerous asset classes, the average individual primarily invests in stocks. While seemingly sound, stock traders need to also use other market indica tors to properly evaluate the risk/reward of each stock. One of the main ones used by advisors and investors is stock beta. Simply: Beta is a numeric value that measures the fluctuations of a stock to changes in the overall stock market ( definition/betahttps://economictimes.indiatimes.com/ ). Each stock has its own level of risk, but that level should be measured against some assigned value. Most industry professionals use the S&P 500 as the market measuring stick for stocks. It is assumed that the beta of the S&P 500 is 1.0 and every stock is compared to the mar ket. For example, Amazon is one of the hottest stock investments in the market and has a 5-year beta of 1.33. This means that Amazon is likely going to move 1.33 times for every 1.0 movement in the overall market. This movement is generally reflected whether the market moves up or down. Beta is often quoted using a timeframe since some periods are more volatile than others. This makes the measurement more relevant.
