Editor's Note: There are a few corrections from the June issue. Keith Strickland of Making the Transition can be reached at Info@Makingthetransition.org and the website is MakingtheTransition.org. The email was incorrect in the article. Carl Hill’s parents met at Carver High School and his dad, a Harper grad, was the football coach at Carver. His mom was the guidance counselor. Hill’s father was a football player, not the coach, at Fort Valley State University. Additionally, Coca-Cola Bottling Co. UNITED took over the Atlanta area business in 2017, not 2013. We apologize for the errors.

CARVIN HAGGINS THE MAN BEHIND THE MUSIC

Grammy and ASCAP award-winning, producer, songwriter, and author Carvin Haggins is the man behind the music we’ve loved and sung along to. We were lucky to have had an opportunity to chat with him during a rare quiet moment.

He believes songs should remind you of a feeling, a moment in your life that merely hearing about in a song brings you back to. Songs can be powerful when carefully orchestrated, capturing a pivotal moment in your life or speaking to a global cause.

A MAN OF FAITH

RAGING AGAINST THE RADIO

Haggins is a man of tremendous faith, and he acknowledges that the awards, nominations, success, and accolades he has received are a result of allowing God to work in his life. He admittedly is tone deaf, does not play instruments, and does not sing, yet he is a gifted songwriter. “I like to think of it as though I am speaking in tongues and the artist is able to translate that message into a song or a hit record,” he says, adding that he is always in awe of an artist’s ability to bring his vision to life.

There are tests along the way. Haggins also believes radio stations should be responsible when sharing music. While music lovers are able to find music easily online today, just a few short years ago, the radio was the source of discovering new songs. Many would tune in to their local stations to hear the newest song or be introduced to an up and comer. Haggins noticed differences in the way songs were shared with various segments of the listening population. He launched “Rage Against the Ratchet” to voice his concern of the discrepancy of urban and pop radio stations. Though he is still pushing for responsible, “child friendly” radio, it is no longer a “rage” but a March for Peace.

THE WHISPER: FROM THE PLAYGROUND TO PHILLY They say that God often speaks in a whisper; it’s the gentle nudge that makes you move. Though he spent time on the playground mimicking Kool & the Gang with his friends, on his 12th birthday when his mom asked whether he wanted a scooter or to move to Philadelphia, he responded, “Philly.” It is as if there was an inner knowing, an inkling that something great was in store and would come to fruition if he could relocate. Even at this early age, God was leading him, although he wasn’t able to articulate what God was saying, he just felt that moving to Philadelphia would be an opportunity he wouldn’t regret.

LOUDER VOICE: SETTING THE FOUNDATION The next voice is the one that leads you to the destined path. A teenage Haggins attending Martin Luther King Jr. High School was a member of the group Crusaders of Base, writing raps and performing. The talented group began working with TLife, where Haggins learned how to create beats and write music. Later, he began creating intro songs for Q102 DJs with Up and Up Productions out of New Jersey. A pivotal break came when he worked with DJ Jazzy Jeff’s production company, A Touch of Jazz. During this opportunity, Haggins met Ivan Barias, creating a pairing that would soon take the music world by storm.

MUSIC IS THE BOOKMARK OF YOUR LIFE Then there is confirmation that you heard Him correctly. Neo soul— full stop. When you think of the neo soul era, you think of a soulful voice over a hip hop beat. You think of a story that is told through lyrics; you think of Musiq Soulchild or Jill Scott. Maybe you visualize “Love Jones” and can remember songs from the soundtrack; you think Raheem DeVaughn—just know Haggins was behind all of it.

THE MAGIC OF THE MUSIC God will give you peace. Haggins doesn’t listen to music at home. His home is his haven where he unwinds and relaxes. He turns off producer and songwriter mode once he enters his home. In fact, he only allows himself to be creative in the studio. Oftentimes he creates songs in real time during a studio session with an artist. A casual moment of hanging out and having a conversation is exactly what Haggins needs to create a song. He crafts a song that is true to the artist and their vernacular. It’s this ability to connect intimately with an artist that has garnered so many memorable lyrics and hit records.

“THE RING” OF SUCCESS Better and better by and by. Haggins is now working with a conglomerate of musical talents including producers, arrangers, artists, and songwriters called “the Ring.” The Ring is poised to be the next big musical movement. Such a powerhouse of talent in close proximity to one another is bound to have an impact not seen in the music industry for many years. The current state of our nation and the ever-changing news cycles worldwide scream for songs that share our collective thoughts. We need powerful voices unafraid of what the “industry” says to once again become the songs that will bookmark our lives. Haggins believes he can be part of this next story of songs. These will be the songs we listen to 10 or 20 years from now and remember. The bookmarking could possibly begin by taking time to listen to artist J. Brown’s “Chapter & Verse” and Mumu Fresh’s “Queen of Culture.” JULY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / S O F U

Dr. Catherine Rowell

Councilwoman Dr. Catherine Rowell -District 1

Rowell hails from Cleveland, Ohio, and moved here in January 1992 to attend Clark Atlanta University (CAU). She is a proud double alum of CAU, where she received her Masters in Public Administration Urban/ City Management and her doctorate in Political Science.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT #SOFU? I love the beauty of our city. You can experience urban, suburban and rural living all within a 30-minute drive through our city.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT IN THE LAST 5 YEARS?

“I love the beauty of our city. You can experience urban, suburban and rural living all within a 30-minute drive through our city.”

The City of South Fulton has experienced many successes over the last five years, primarily chartering the roadmap for where we want to go. We have updated our Comprehensive Development Plan, developed an Economic Development Strategic Plan, and a Park Master Plan and are currently developing a Public Art Master Plan. As it relates to District 1, I am most proud of the economic development projects that have come to the area. We now have a Publix, locally-owned businesses operating at Sandtown Center, new senior housing, the Campbellton Nature Preserve and two mixed-use development projects that will bring more retail and dining options to our area. Councilwoman Carmalitha Gumbs

-District 2

Gumbs was born in Brooklyn, New York but grew up in Virginia. She relocated to #SoFu 16 years ago from Richmond, Virginia for a job transfer. She is the middle child and a graduate of Norfolk State University.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT SOFU? SoFu has something for everybody. It is a busy little town nestled away from city living. I love that it’s a small town with a lot of Black Excellence.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT IN THE LAST 5 YEARS? My biggest accomplishment is having a part in shaping the history of #SoFu. Being able to really invest in the growth of this city and community, and make a lasting impact is the icing on the cake for me.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO IN SOFU’S FUTURE? The city is on the rise. There is so much to look forward to, especially having a clean canvas to work from. Our future is ripe for quality economic development and quality housing. It will definitely be a place where families will be excited to call #SoFu home! I can’t wait.

“I love SoFu because it reminds me of my hometown in a sense; it’s historical, full of legacy residents, opportunities, and an enormous faith-based community.”

Councilwoman Helen Zenobia Willis -District 3

Born and raised in Savannah, Georgia, Willis attended historic black high school A. E. Beach, and finished Savannah State University with a B.A. in Accounting. “My upbringing was structured and a middle-class family full of educators and public servants.” She has lived in #SoFu since 2002 and married #SoFu native Vincent Willis Sr. in 2007, She has a blended family of four kids and seven grandchildren. She moved to Atlanta to work under the leadership of former Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond as an Unemployment Insurance Tax Auditor. All her work experience has been working as a Payroll Tax Accountant and in Tax Incentives. “I love SoFu because it reminds me of my hometown in a sense; it’s historical, full of legacy residents, opportunities, and an enormous faith-based community. I grew up serving in my community and making a difference. I worked with five different organizations to help bring this city to fruition. This city was birthed out by residents who wanted to be governed and controlled by people who lived in their communities with a vested interest.” A proud moment for Willis was being elected out of a field of ten men vying to be a part of history. Serving as an inaugural member of the City of South Fulton City Council was quite an accomplishment! “Never in a million years would I have imagined growing up in Savannah, Georgia, and volunteering in the community would give me the skills to help establish a city and become an elected official.”

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS? I have many accomplishments since serving in the role since 2017. I don’t back down from any challenge presented to me, and I have faced many. When I took office, our local fire station was closed and needed renovation, and there was a blighted apartment complex located across the street. I advocated and made the renovation a priority of the fire station in our city’s budget. The fire station is renovated and in full operation, and the blighted apartment complex is now a workforce housing community and renovated. Additionally, the City of South Fulton now has a citywide “Feeding the City Initiative” to address food insecurity.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO IN #SOFU’S FUTURE? I’m looking forward to welcoming an over $50 million federal investment to the City of South Fulton. The new Job Corps facility will serve over 500 students between the ages of 16 and 24. It will provide educational opportunities and job training; this investment in our community benefits employers who will be able to recruit students who will be trained and ready to work. I’ve been working closely with the Job Corp since 2017. The facility is slated to open in the year 2025. JULY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / S O F U

COLLEGE PARK SKYHAWKS ACCEPT “ARTS INCOMMUNITY GREATER ACCESS” AWARD AWARD RECOGNIZES LEADERSHIP IN ARTS AND CULTURAL ACCESS

Arts InCommunity honored the College Park Skyhawks and Atlanta Hawks with its 2022 Greater Access Award at InCommunity’s 33rd Annual Gala on Saturday, April 23. The Arts InCommunity Greater Access Award was created to honor and celebrate an organization exemplifying great leadership in Arts & Cultural Access in the State of Georgia. “Arts InCommunity is thrilled to present the College Park Skyhawks and Atlanta Hawks with the Greater Access Award,” said Lowell Fuchs, manager of Arts InCommunity. “The Skyhawks and Hawks continue to lead the way in community support and accessibility among sports clubs here in Georgia. When you step into State Farm Arena or Gateway Center Arena for a basketball game, you immediately know the organization has worked hard to create an experience that is truly for everyone.” The College Park Skyhawks provided access to their games for several different members of the community this past season, with game nights celebrating members of the military, first responders, teachers, kids, faith community members, and more. In addition, the work of the Skyhawks in the community – including passing out turkeys and groceries for Thanksgiving, distributing free glasses for middle school students, and reading to local students – was recognized by Arts InCommunity for the Greater Access Award. The Hawks’ partnership with Arts InCommunity (VSA Arts of GA) dates back well over a decade and together, the organizations have worked together to ensure that all Georgians have the opportunity to join the Hawks and Skyhawks fan bases. “We are ecstatic and honored to accept this award and to be recognized for our work in the southside community,” said Janice

Sweeping shorelines make this region a generational and repeat visitors paradise. This peninsula is an imperative visit for outdoor enthusiasts, explorers, and discoverers. Door County is an outdoor oasis that is riddled with activity. As an agricultural town that quickly transitioned into an escape for the affluent, Door County’s explosive growth of the area is the result of a

National Geographic article published around 1969. Moreover, this region grew in notoriety as a result of the frenzy for timber and limestone to rebuild Chicago twice after its fires. Affectionately known by neighboring midwestern cities and states, Door County is a respite that exudes natural beauty year-round. Whether you are looking for ice fishing, cruising in a canoe, cherry or apple picking, this Wisconsin destination has tons of options for adventure. Five state parks make Door County a hotbed and haven for the active traveler. Invest in your personal growth by allowing your eyes to wander the 300 miles of beaches, bays, and bluffs that contribute to the land’s unique appeal.

INFLATION ARTICLE BY ERIC WIMBUSH, CFA

HOW IT IMPACTS YOU

At Seraphim Wealth Advisors, I have fielded numerous calls in the past few months from clients trying to understand why the market has been so volatile lately. There are several reasons, but one of the most impactful has been inflation. What is inflation? A simple definition from the IMF (IMF. com) states: “Inflation measures how much more expensive a set of goods and services have become over a certain period of time, usually a year.” Every household is impacted by inflation. Everyday examples impacting households daily include gas and groceries. If you’ve filled up your automobile recently, you have seen the impact of inflation. You have also probably noticed that the usual groceries you buy cost more—that is inflation. Anybody doing home repairs or improvements has seen the cost of lumber and building material skyrocket during the past year or so. This leads us to ask why markets have been so volatile. One of the Federal Reserve Bank’s main mandates is managing inflation and its impact on the economy. They do this by raising interest rates. A rise in interest rates, primarily the Fed Funds rate, has the impact of slowing down a hot economy and reducing inflation over time, causing uncertainty. This impacts investors because it affects companies and their overall business prospects through a slowdown in investment in infrastructure (buildings, equipment, and human capital). Ultimately, this flows down to the consumer (you). Rising rates slow the economy. Inflation in 2022 has been the highest that it has been in the past 40 years (measured at 8.5% YTD through April 2022). Hence, investing becomes more volatile. The Seraphim Wealth Advisors team is available to provide education to our clients on how to prudently navigate a volatile market that is being impacted by inf lation. Please call for a free consultation.

Bags are packed, reservations are made, and the Out of Office automatic reply is letting everyone know you have officially entered vacation mode. There’s one thing that’s lingering: how to go on vacation without pressing pause on the fitness progress you’ve made, or avoid commuting to a gym and paying drop-in fees. Mayhem Athlete provides online programming that guarantees challenging workouts which can be done in 30 minutes or less. These quick but effective workouts incorporate compound movements such as burpees, push ups and lunges. Compound movements use more than one muscle group, requiring more energy from your muscles to recover. This means you can continue to burn calories while enjoying the beach or sitting at work, long after the workout is over. The Mayhem Athlete M30 program offers two options for all fitness levels. Mayhem Bodyweight, a 30-minute format that requires no equipment, and Mayhem Minimal, a 30-minute format which only requires a couple dumbbells. Mayhem Athletes’ easy to use app, SugarWOD, provides you with a warm up, workout, accessory cool-down, and coaching video - ensuring you get the most out of your 30 minutes! You can also find video demonstrations for each movement within the app and a community of like-minded individuals who are doing the same workouts around the globe.
