The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflect that best. I love Christmas! I can’t wait for the Spelman and Morehouse Christmas Carol Concert. It's my favorite holiday tradition! This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We’ve compiled a gift guide to make your shopping easier and that also supports our local businesses. We also wanted to share what our area has to offer this holiday season for entertainment and ways to give back. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other extending grace, empathy and love. For this Holiday Glam issue, we were able to shoot some of the Mayors of the #SoFu area at Stanley’s on Butner Rd and ask them about their favorite holiday traditions. The owner Monica Coleman is one of the few Black women that own a cigar lounge. She is committed to creating a community space and it’s luxe! Go check it out! Happy Holidays!

Sloomoo Institute Brings Multi-Sensory Slime Experience to Atlanta

True Colors celebrated 20 years of bringing Black stories to life in November with a fabulous cabaret and fundraiser curated by Artistic Director Jamil Jude. It included performances and tributes to the incredible playwrights, actors and artists that have shaped the incredible journey thus far.

The High Museum of Art presented the first museum survey dedicated to Deana Lawson, who is known for investigating and challenging conventional representations of Black identities. Co-organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art / Boston and MoMA PS1, “Deana Lawson” (through Feb. 19, 2023) features nearly 60 works made over the past two decades that evoke a range of histories and photographic styles, including family albums, studio portraiture and staged tableaux.

Tickets are on sale now to experience Sloomoo Institute, Atlanta’s new allages destination for multi-sensory play through hand-crafted, artisanal slime and #satisfying experiences. The Buckhead location will open doors to the public on Nov. 18, just in time to add more joy to the holiday season.The NYC-born immersive attraction features a series of fantastical, interactive experiences that delight the senses of sight, touch, smell and sound.

Mayor Vince Williams is a graduate of LemoyneOwen College in Memphis, Tennessee and has over 25 years in corporate America. Mayor Williams is the current President of the National League of Cities and Past President of the Georgia Municipal Association. He is also an entrepreneur in real estate and the health and wellness industry. He serves God at the iTHRIVE Christian Church as an Associate Pastor. He is a certified Christian educator. Mayor Williams is happily married to Sharon Williams and they have a beautiful daughter, Nia. “Our holiday tradition is to make sure that family and close friends are priority. Thanksgiving could be anywhere in the country because every year someone in our family hosts. We love exchanging gifts and attending Christmas Church Service in a little chapel that’s over 100 years old,” he says. Some of the most beautiful gems to be found in Union City are the numerous outdoor treasures, parks, trails, and hidden lakes. The Atlanta Metro Studio is another gem. “The best thing for me about being Mayor is having the honor to serve and create opportunities for many who have felt hopeless or forgotten.” “In 2023, I’m looking forward to seeing numerous capital projects being completed in 2023 and beyond, such as a new Veterans Park, several walking trails that will connect all of Union City, a new Fire Station, multiple mixed-use developments that will include retail, dining, entertainment and recreational uses.”

Mayor khalid kamau of the City of South Fulton loves to spend the holidays with family. “We don’t just love each other. We really like each other! But I can’t play Spades,” he laughs. “Every year my cousins try to teach me. Only family is going to let you sit at the Spades table when you don’t really know what you’re doing!” Fife, an historic farming district at the southern edge of our community is a hidden gem in the city of South Fulton. For Mayor kamau, meeting the citizens of South Fulton is the best thing about being Mayor. “I started a tradition called #MayorMondays where I open the Mayor’s office to everyone who wants to meet. I’ve met so many incredible people. Our residents are our most valuable resource.” On looking forward to 2023, he says that his legacy will be creating a more transparent government. Mayor Deana Holiday Ingraham Mayor Deana Holiday Ingraham, the 34th Mayor of East Point, Georgia, a champion public servant, is a wife, mother, and advocate who is dedicated personally and professionally to public service. She believes that revitalization/ redevelopment is not synonymous with gentrification and believes that East Point can and will revitalize and redevelop while minimizing, if not eliminating, the negative impacts of gentrification. “Our family enjoys celebrating Kwanzaa annually. Day 5, Nia, is very special to us as our daughter’s name is Nia and our constant prayer is that she fulfills God’s purpose for her life.” East Point Path Model Mile is a hidden gem! This 1.4-mile-long trail weaves through Sumner Park and runs adjacent to Velodrome before joining Norman Berry Drive and Spring Street Park on the way to Tri-Cities High School and Bryan Park. This extensive project will consist of 10-foot-wide trails that will eventually link into the Atlanta Beltline. “The best thing about being Mayor is being able to daily lead, advocate and collaborate to achieve people-focused solutions,” she says. “I look forward to 2023 and beyond! I’m excited about building our skyline in downtown East Point and welcoming the world to East Point during World Cup 2026 while showing why there’s no point like East Point!”

Mayor Bianca Motley Broom “My favorite memories are of Christmas breakfasts that turned into lunch and dinner. We’d have at least 25 family members and friends. Christmas wasn’t complete without my mother’s sweet potato pie and my grandmother’s pound, German chocolate and Japanese fruit cakes. We follow with poker games late into the night. My grandmother would take everyone’s money!” There are so many hidden gems in College Park! From the amazing food on the south side (Wrap-a-Lot, Akhirah’s Cafe and Zab-e-lee), amazing parks and recreation offerings (including a climbing wall). “The best thing about being Mayor is being able to help facilitate opportunities for our residents to thrive and seeing positive changes taking place in real time,” she says. In 2023 and beyond, Mayor Motley Broom is excited about Six West, a 300acre development off of Camp Creek Parkway. “I’m excited to see new residential options near our MARTA station along with an arts campus nearby.”

Mayor Mario Avery “Family is important to me and is a vital part of who I am. I have 600 plus family members in the 20-county area around Atlanta. We work as a family to decide which family members’ homes will host our holiday celebrations. I enjoy spending quality time with my in-laws and building a family atmosphere at work and at home!” Says Mayor Avery. A gem in the City of Fairburn is the senior programming through the Parks & Recreation Department. “Our Holiday Camp, also through our Parks & Recreation Department, is focused on our community’s youth.” The Annual Christmas Tree Lighting & Fireworks Show on December 3 is one of the few winter fireworks shows! The best thing about being Mayor of the City of Fairburn is working in conjunction with all city council members and executive staff to create community engagement opportunities, according to Mayor Avery. “One of my goals is to build a work environment based on excellence while valuing people and equity.” In 2023, the City of Fairburn is excited to roll out citywide parks master planning across all communities, for example at the front entrance of Asbury Park subdivision.

"Mother of God the Musical” to Debut at Southwest Arts Center

Atlanta’s newest musical is bringing locals a fresh perspective on one of the greatest known stories of all time this holiday season. “Mother of God the Musical” debuts on Wednesday, December 7, with shows running through Friday, December 23 at Southwest Arts Center. Many know the story of Jesus, but few understand the untold story of the mother that changed the world. “Mother of God” explores how Mary, an ordinary woman facing extraordinary circumstances, rose to answer the calling of a lifetime. Audiences will enjoy an inspiring story of adventure, faith, and duty that focuses on Mary’s perspective of the events leading up to Jesus’ birth. Creators Christian Magby and Christian Albright pondered what happened to Mary before and after Jesus’ birth and decided to explore what that narrative might look like from her perspective.

Direction is provided by Jade Lambert-Smith, music supervision by CBD, and choreography by Victor Jackson. The estimated show runtime is 2 hours and 15 minutes. ABOUT CHRISTIAN MAGBY Christian Magby is an actor and composer based in Atlanta. He can currently be seen in the CW hit series, “The Flash,” as Deon Owens, the Still Force, the latest cosmic force to be introduced to the Arrowverse. Magby can also be seen in the Oscar-nominated, Amazon feature, “One Night in Miami,” directed by Regina King, starring opposite Leslie Odom Jr., Aldis Hodge, and Lance Reddick. Magby has worked in the music departments for the NBC/Universal musical films “Dear Evan Hansen” and “Pitch Perfect 3.” Recently, he was the composer and orchestrator for the world premiere of the musical “The Incredible Book Eating Boy” at Alliance Theatre. He has worked as an actor and music director in many of the theaters in Atlanta, including Aurora Theatre, Horizon Theatre Company, Theatrical Outfit, Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company, among others. LET'S GET MERRY! 5 UNIQUE HOLIDAY TRADITIONS TO START IN YOUR NEW HOME

1. Make breakfast together. Punch up your normal breakfast fare with some interesting holiday flavors. Make it as simple or elaborate as you like. Take suggestions from the family. Have each family member be responsible for contributing a unique recipe and take turns preparing and working with each other to create your perfect holiday-themed family breakfast. Some ideas are cranberry-orange pancakes, apple cider mimosas, and holiday sausage—the options are limitless!

2. Create a Christmas gift scavenger hunt. Who doesn’t love a scavenger hunt? This is a really cool way to get the whole family involved thinking of unique ways to hide your gifts and create creative clues as to where to find them. Make a master list of where all the gifts are located and/or limit the hunt to one gift per person so there are not any forgotten gifts! 3. Write holiday notes. Put cute holiday notes on your new neighbors’ doors. Introduce your family and what makes you special. Do you all like to dance in the middle of the living room to Boogie Nights? Does your family play the f lute as a group? Does your family like crazy hats? Have fun with it—the sillier the better! 4. Decorate holiday hats. Gather up Elf, Santa, and top hats for each of you. Decorate with candy canes, garland, tinsel, ornaments, etc. Write your names on them and wear or place them on the mantel as holiday decor. 5. Find cool ways to wrap…gifts that is! Who says the best way to present a gift is with holiday wrapping paper? Consider using unused shirts, pants, fabric, leaves—be as unique and creative as you like. The Pink Frog Affair: An Evening of Poetry, Music and Dance 10TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION!

Founded by 25-year breast cancer survivor Tammy L. Bolton and her husband Robert H. Bolton, the annual breast cancer awareness and fundraising event took place on Friday, October 14, 2022 at Morehouse College. The Pink Frog Legacy Award was given to Dr. Veena N. Rao, co-director of the Cancer Biology Program at Morehouse School of Medicine for her groundbreaking breast cancer research. Milton J. Little, Jr., president and CEO of United Way of Greater Atlanta served as honorary chair of the Host Committee. This year’s event raised over $141,000, providing maid service, groceries and transportation to and from radiation and chemotherapy appointments.

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”

Bonds 101! There are numerous assets that individuals invest in as part of their portfolio. A few of the most common asset classes are stocks, exchange traded funds, mutual funds, options, commodities, real estate, and bonds. We are often asked about bond investing and what factors impact the decision on buying this asset class. So, what is a bond? A bond is simply a debt security used by companies or government entities to borrow money. In layman’s terms, it is a promise to pay back the initial investment plus a rate of return over a known period in exchange for borrowing money. The rate of return that the entity promises to pay is dependent on several factors. While not all inclusive, these factors include the financial strength of the entity, the length of time before the investment and interest is repaid, the frequency of interest payments, the credit rating of the entity, the type of bond issued, and the index used as the base rate.

One of the main risks to consider when investing in bonds is the general direction of interest rates. A simple rule to remember is that interest rates and bond values are inversely related (which means that as interest rates rise, bond values fall). The opposite applies as well when rates fall, as investors will see bond values rise. Either way, an investor must remember that they are investing in an expected income stream (the interest payments) which will be viewed differently when interest rates are volatile. An investor that is investing for the long term has a different consideration than one that is short-term trading and doesn’t plan to hold the bond until maturity.
