LIFESTYLE LETTER
Welcome to the Premier Issue of Snohomish City Lifestyle Hi friends, As you are well aware, Snohomish is a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family - so what better time to launch our very own magazine than the Holiday season? During this time of year, we want to do more than simply introduce ourselves, we want to introduce you, our readers, to why our family and team believe Snohomish is such a great place and share every month, why we are so grateful for being able to live, work, and play alongside you. While nearly every community has its share of ”hidden gems”, those who make it a wonderful place, for whatever reason, Snohomish seems to have been blessed with an abundance of such people and we aim to fill these pages with photos and stories about you, our neighbors. Nearly everywhere we go, we run into people who are quick to smile, serve with genuine interest, and are willing to drop what they're doing to lend a hand. From the numerous family farms in the area who welcome us during the Fall harvest, to the antique shops and variety of boutiques. From the amazing coffee shops, and incredible Senior Center to the numerous and enriching gardening resources. Hot air balloons, skydiving, great fishing, and minor league baseball are all in close proximity along with mountain hikes, skiing and water sports nearby, in the picturesque Puget Sound. Where else would you choose to live? Won’t you join us every month as we share the stories of the people and places that contribute so much to making Snohomish worth celebrating? Happy Holidays Snohomish!

SNOHOMISH’S “HAPPY PLACE” The Woman Behind the Happiness at the Senior Center
There is a certain energy when you walk into the Snohomish Senior Center, and it’s not because of the Bingo. Sharon Burlison, Snohomish Senior Center Director, will meet you at the door with a smile, a story, and maybe even a cup of cocoa. She’s not the only reason the center is deemed the “happy place,” but she’s a big part of it.
Member Carol Sack says the center is a completely different place than it was when she first walked through the doors 11 years ago, and that’s because of Burlison. “Sharon cares about this place,” said Sack. “A lot. And she’s compiled a really great team. It’s obvious they like being here, and we feel it.” Burlison, who has been at the center for seven years, said she was considering joining the board when she found out they were looking for a new director. “I knew at that moment that I didn’t want to be on the board,” she said. “I wanted to be the director. I talked myself into the idea that I had all the ingredients needed to lift this place up.” A Snohomish native for more than 30 years, Burlison has had her hand in a wide array of community affairs – from PTO president to YMCA director, to owner of the Snoho Mojo espresso stand.
“We are a strong community because we support our businesses, are involved in our schools, and believe in the organizations that provide for our youth, seniors and those in need.” ~ Sharon Burlison

Sharon Burlison, Senior Center Director
“Senior centers can be pretty cold and stale,” she said. “But we take a lot of pride in the fact that our center is extremely close and very family-oriented. We treat everyone here how we’d want our loved ones – our own parents or grandparents – to be treated.” Susan Hutchinson, a senior center member, moved from Camano Island to Lake Stevens a year and a half ago when she put her husband in a memory care facility. Having been his full-time caregiver for eight years, Hutchinson said she didn’t even know who she was anymore. So when a friend told her to check out the Snohomish Senior Center, she did – and that’s where she met Burlison. “You’re only a stranger the first time you walk in,” said Hutchinson. “She’s the juice for this whole place. And I know it’s because she has a passion for it. It’s not just a job to her.” After joining, Hutchinson joined the grief support group, and after about six months talked to Burlison about starting another group for people who were ready to move beyond their grief. They called it “Resilient Living,” which Hutchinson now leads with her friend, and is just one of the many programs offered, including daily weekday lunches, Seahawks viewing parties, Bible studies, wood carving, and more. Burlison explained how she stays openminded to new program ideas, continually seeking to meet the current needs of members. “Her door is always open,” added Hutchinson. “She loves seeing the difference the center can make in the lives of members.” But staff and members would agree that the beauty is not in the programs. Whether it’s walking hand in hand through the loss of a loved one, discovering life on the other side of grief, or finding comfort in an ice cream sundae on a Friday afternoon – the deep relationships are what make the center unique.

“Magic happens when you have relationships,” said Burlison. “These people mean a lot to me.” Burlison plans to stay at the senior center for five to six more years before she and her husband retire but will continue looking for ways to serve her community, and said she hopes people will remember the center when considering volunteer opportunities, community involvement, or monetary donations, as senior centers can often fall off the radar. “I’ve always thought of Snohomish as a little big town,” she said. “We are a strong community because we support our businesses, are involved in our schools, and believe in the organizations that provide for our youth, seniors and those in need.” Others, however, may argue that Snohomish is a strong community because of members like Burlison. A Historic Gem in Downtown Snohomish The Famous Feather Ballroom
ARTICLE BY TERESA COY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAWN TAYLOR
Nestled in the heart of Snohomish, the Feather Ballroom stands as a testament to the rich history and vibrant culture of this charming town. With its elegant architecture and storied past this iconic venue has played a significant role in the community for over a century. The building that houses this beautiful ballroom was designed in 1906 by renowned architect John W. Beck and built by the Fraternal Order of Eagles. The Eagles Hall quickly became a hub for social gatherings, cultural events, and live performances. In 1910 on April Fool’s Day, the Hall hosted the dedication ceremony of its new neighbor, the Carnegie Library. Following the speeches, the ceremonies moved to the new building and into the upstairs ballroom that was still without light fixtures.
As time passed the Feather Ballroom underwent several transformations to adapt to changing times and tastes. In the 1920s, it was renovated to accommodate the growing popularity of dance halls and jazz music. The ballroom’s iconic feather chandeliers, from which it derived its name, were added during this period further enhancing its allure. Unfortunately, as time passed the membership in the F.O.E declined, and the building fell into disrepair until it was lovingly restored beginning in 2005 by a local gentleman named Scott Swoboda. Mr. Swoboda brought the venue back to its earlier glory and began to prepare it to be a wedding and events venue again highlighting its historical beauty. During this renovation the original outer façade of the building was restored to the large storefront windows, a grand gesture

that plays a part in the success of the storefront businesses at the street level of the building today. Fast forward to 2021 when Lyndsay Lamb and Leslie Davis, co-founders of Lamb & Co., and co-stars of HGTV's Unsellable Houses, purchased the building. The twins and their team began to update the ballroom, this time to bring it into the modern era. The attention to detail can be seen as you walk through the space – the kitchen and baths have both been remodeled with care to keep as much of the original as possible. As you enter the building now you are greeted by the original grand staircase leading from the main entrance foyer to the ballroom level. Ascending the stairs, one cannot help but appreciate the craftmanship, both past and present. The millwork is breathtaking, the dance floor is one of the few original “floating floors” that remain in the country, and you spend time admiring the beautiful hardwood floors and the detailing in the multi-layered copper ceiling embossed with its original ornate design. The ballroom is now managed by Tara Quiroz, who is eager to help you plan and serve your next themed event, wedding, or corporate gathering. For more information reach out to Tara Quiroz at cateringbytarahelm@gmail.com or call 425 345-2760 for assistance. The next time you are wandering down Main Street, take some time to admire the history and beauty around you and spend some quality time with those close to you in this beautiful gem in the heart of Snohomish.

Every woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our nine tips for transforming and elevating your closet. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying these guidelines will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.
01
FACE CLOTHES THE SA ME DIRECTION
It may seem silly, but when dealing with a small space, little things count. Hanging all clothes the same direction is a no-brainer for continuity in your closet.
03 02
USE REAL ESTATE WISELY Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. A large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.
04
HIDDEN STOR AGE Hidden storage is a game changer in keeping a closet visually clean. Tuck folded clothes behind closed cabinet doors if the space is multipurpose. The floor-toceiling built-ins in Keri’s closet contain folded clothes, athleisure and other items she needs as she gets ready each day. Tuck away the least-used items: Use hidden storage and the very top of the closet for out-of-season items and stuff only worn a few times a year.
M AKE A STATEMENT
Why use an armchair when you have room for a sofa? Slide up a stool and colorful area rug to complete the look. If you have excessive wall space, consider a mini gallery wall or a statement wall with wallpaper to polish things off.
05
ORGANIZE BY KIND AND COLOR
Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

The City Lifestyle
Giving Campaign
2023 30
G IV IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE
“
This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”

While the most important parts of my life center around people and the community I have in faith, family, friends, and work - there are things that I look forward to revisiting whenever possible and I’d like to share them with you. 01 The Oregon Coast has beauty and accessibility that is second to none. It’s also a great place to fall in love. // 02 While I’m not an artist, my creativity is stirred by great books in nearly all genres from the classics to business and biblical scholarship. // 03 Baseball, to me is a microcosm of Life because it is filled with growth, joy, pain, success, failure, and rich in lessons one can use for a lifetime. // 04 Classic cars have been a part of my life since I was a young man and fell in love for the first time. Regardless of restoring to original or updating a timeless classic, let’s go! // 05 I have a love/hate relationship with the game of golf but seem to be pulled back toward the end of every round, convinced to do it yet again. // 06 Wood: beautiful, rich, timeless and classic. What’s not to like?
