LIFESTYLE LETTER
Letter from the Editor: Making Our Mark Hello, friends, Art and style are often treated as the finishing touches—the beautiful extras we add once everything else is in place. But putting together this issue reminded me that they are so much more than decoration. They are how we tell our stories. The art we create can reveal where we have been, what we value and how we see the world. The clothes we wear can change the way we carry ourselves. The spaces we design become the backdrop for our most meaningful moments. Music, theater and visual art give us ways to connect when ordinary words simply are not enough. Throughout this issue, you will meet people who are using creativity to make a real difference in our community. Whitefield Academy’s fine arts students are sharing their talents far beyond the classroom, while Artportunity Knocks is helping young people imagine bigger possibilities for their lives through music, media and the arts. We also celebrate some of the talented local artists who are telling stories through their own distinctive styles. Photographer Ashley Putnam takes us beyond galleries and studios to discover the street art bringing personality and unexpected beauty to familiar corners of Smyrna. Style takes center stage, too. Statement Boutique helps women find clothing that makes them feel confident and authentically themselves. Komar Luxe brings that same sense of individuality into the home, creating spaces that are not only beautiful but deeply connected to the people who live within them. What ties all of these stories together is intention. Each artist, educator, designer and entrepreneur is creating something that did not exist before—and inviting others to see themselves or their surroundings in a new way. My hope is that this issue encourages you to experience creativity in whatever form speaks to you. Visit, listen, explore, wear something that makes you feel fabulous or finally make that space in your home feel like your own. Because art and style are not simply things we admire. They are part of how we live.

There are shops you walk into because you need a dress, a gift, or something pretty. And then there are places you walk into because they make you feel a little more like yourself. For Kim Smith, Statement Boutique was that kind of place long before it was her business. After her husband, Chuck, passed away in 2021, Kim found herself standing in the middle of a life she had not planned. She had been a stay-at-home mom for 21 years, and her children were now young adults. Suddenly, she was trying to understand who she was now and what life might look like moving forward. Statement Boutique, then located near her home, became one of the places she returned to often. At first, it gave her a reason to get out of the house and do something small for herself. But over time, the boutique became something she looked forward to — a warm, welcoming space where she could browse, breathe and feel a little more like herself again. “It became my little bit of retail therapy and a place that simply made me feel good,” Kim says. In 2022, when Kim saw the boutique was hiring, she applied. What began as a job quickly became something meaningful. Over the next year, Kim fell in love with helping women find clothing that made them feel confident. She loved the conversations, the relationships, the women who came in unsure and left smiling, and realizing she loved coming to work every day. For Kim, Statement had already been part of her healing. Now, it was becoming part of her purpose. Then the owner asked if she had ever considered buying the boutique. Kim’s first answer was no. Owning a business felt risky. But the question stayed with her, and over time, what first felt impossible began to feel like an invitation. In September 2023, Kim took a huge leap of faith and became the owner of Statement Boutique. Looking back, she can see the beauty in the full-circle story. The boutique that helped her feel like herself again had become the place where she would begin building something new — a purpose rooted in helping other women feel seen, encouraged and confident, too. Now, that story has continued in Smyrna Market Village. CONTINUED >

Kim grew up in the Austell, Mableton and Smyrna area, and after moving back, she began spending more time in Smyrna Market Village. She quickly noticed what business owners love about it: people show up here. They walk. They gather. They shop. They support. At the same time, Statement’s lease in Acworth was coming to an end, and Kim knew the boutique needed a new chapter. She had her heart set on Smyrna, but there were no available spaces and no obvious next step. As much as she loved having a storefront, she had begun preparing herself for the possibility that Statement might move fully online. Then, while walking to StillFire, Kim saw a “For Lease” sign in the window of the space where Statement now sits. The sign had gone up just two days earlier. She called Monday morning, toured the space that afternoon and knew immediately. This was it. Since opening in Smyrna Market Village, Statement has been welcomed with the warmth Kim hoped for. People walk in and tell her they are glad she is here, or that Statement is exactly what Smyrna Market Village needed.

“Personal st yle tells a s t o r y b e fo r e a person ever s a y s a w o r d .”
That response matters because Kim wants Statement to feel like shopping with a friend. The boutique carries clothing, jewelry and accessories for women in many seasons of life. Kim does not buy for one generation. She buys for women — real women with full lives and places to go. But what Kim wants is for women to find pieces that feel like them. One of Kim’s favorite moments happens when a customer agrees to try on something she never would have pulled from the rack herself. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard, ‘I would have never grabbed this off the rack,’” Kim says. “My answer is almost always, ‘Just try it on.’” Then comes the mirror moment. The smile. The realization that stepping outside your comfort zone can be fun. That is what makes fashion meaningful to Kim: finding the outfit, accessory or small detail that helps a woman feel beautiful and confident. The relationships matter just as much. Some customers come in for a specific occasion. Others stop by to browse or say hello. Kim loves when women linger, talk and make Statement part of their routine. “They’re not just coming for the clothes,” Kim says. “They’re coming for the relationships we’ve built.” As Statement settles into its new home, Kim looks forward to continuing the Giveback events she began in Acworth and finding ways to support the community around her. After Chuck passed away, Kim and her children were surrounded by people who showed up with kindness and love. She has not forgotten what that felt like. Now, she hopes Statement can be a place that offers encouragement in return. A place to shop, yes. But also a place to connect. A place to be seen.

SMYRNA, in Full Color MEET SEVEN ARTISTS BRINGING JOY, IDENTITY, MEMORY AND IMAGINATION INTO THE PUBLIC SPACES WE SHARE. ARTICLE BY STACEY SCOTT | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Some works of art ask us to step inside a quiet gallery. Others meet us exactly where we are—on the way to morning coffee, walking into a favorite neighborhood business or simply passing an intersection we have traveled a hundred times before. Across Smyrna, once-ordinary surfaces are becoming something more. Utility boxes burst with flowers and movement. Murals turn blank walls into landmarks. A sidewalk becomes an invitation to stop, look down and imagine what might be possible. That is the beauty of public art. It does not wait for an audience to find it. It becomes part of a community’s everyday rhythm, quietly changing not only how a place looks, but how it feels. The seven artists featured here arrived at their creative practices through very different paths. Some call Smyrna home, while others have contributed their talents to the city’s growing public-art landscape. Their styles range from whimsical illustration and expressive abstraction to bold typography, spiritual symbolism and enormous, light-filled murals. Yet each shares a belief that art belongs where people live, work and gather—and that a little creativity can transform the way we experience the spaces around us.

Zoya Aly For Zoya Aly, a wall is never merely a wall. It is an opportunity to create connection, awaken a memory and give a community something it can proudly claim as its own. The Atlanta-based muralist and multidisciplinary artist earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art, graduating cum laude from Georgia State University in 2025, where she is now pursuing her Master of Fine Arts. Her multicultural upbringing informs a style pairing bold, contemporary imagery with delicate textures inspired by henna, textiles and folk-art traditions. During Smyrna’s 2026 Brush & Box Fest, Zoya painted Duck, Duck, Lemonade, bringing a playful burst of summertime color to the Village Green. Her growing portfolio also includes an official 2026 FIFA World Cup commemorative lapel pin commissioned by the City of Doraville and artwork licensed for Habitat for Humanity International’s Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project. Whether working across a wall or within the tiny dimensions of a lapel pin, Zoya creates with the same purpose: to inspire wonder, belonging and shared pride. Connect: @zoyathecreatrix

Ryan Coleman A scribble may appear spontaneous and fleeting, but in Ryan Coleman’s hands, it becomes something worth preserving. “The scribble represents a spontaneous gesture at the inception of an idea,” Ryan explains. “I love the idea of freezing that gesture, memorializing it as a constant reminder of what’s possible.” That sense of possibility runs throughout the Smyrna artist’s work. Ryan combines the visual language of traditional cartoon animation with gestural abstraction, producing paintings, sculptures and large-scale installations that feel playful yet purposeful. After earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Atlanta College of Art, Ryan worked briefly at Cartoon Network before moving to New York City, where he spent eight years as a studio assistant to renowned pop artist Jeff Koons. Today, his work can be found in collections including the High Museum of Art, Coca-Cola and Delta Air Lines. His next canvas brings that experience home. Ryan is creating a 675-square-foot sidewalk mural for the Shops at Belmont, scheduled for installation in September at Atlanta and Windy Hill roads—turning the beginning of an idea into something Smyrna will soon be able to walk across. Leah Kellaway For Leah Kellaway, illustration and design are both forms of storytelling—and every project begins with a pencil. The Atlanta-based mixed-media illustrator, muralist and designer spent a decade working as a graphic designer before founding Kellaway Creative. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from the University of Georgia and a Master of Fine Arts in Illustration from the University of Hartford, Leah brings a strong design foundation to work filled with portraiture, texture, bold shapes and vibrant color. Her Smyrna projects include Brush & Box Fest and a utility-box wrap at South Cobb Drive and Church Road. As Paint Love’s mural manager, she has also created projects for schools and nonprofits across metro Atlanta, including Cultivating a Culture of Peace at Decatur High School and Mental Health Through the Lifespan with Cobb Collaborative. Her illustrative portfolio ranges from a John Lewis postage-stamp concept to a richly rendered series of The Wizard of Oz movie posters—proof that meaningful stories can unfold across an entire wall or within a single printed image. Lacey Longino Long before Lacey Longino began covering walls with flowers, color and light, she was a little girl learning to paint hydrangeas in her grandmother Rosemary’s garage studio near Lake Rabun. Her other grandmother, Barbara, painted too, creating in a backyard greenhouse filled with artwork, books and inspiration clippings. Surrounded by artists—and encouraged by a mother who believed children should go outside or make something—Lacey grew up understanding creativity as a natural part of life. After earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Georgia State University, Lacey developed a mixed-media style rooted in flowers, family photographs, nostalgia and the idea of home. Her public work has since expanded dramatically. Grounded in Your Light, her 6,101-squarefoot mural at The Upton in Atlanta, even inspired a short documentary following its creation. Calling herself a “light tracker,” Lacey studies the shadows cast by trees and architecture, incorporating them into site-specific designs. Her recent Smyrna work includes a mural at StillFire Brewing and an original Brush & Box Fest piece painted entirely with brushes in only a few hours. No matter the scale, her purpose remains constant: bringing joy into the spaces people share. Connect: laceylongino.com | @laceyclongino

Ashli Ognelodh Curry Ashli Ognelodh Curry does not view art simply as something she creates. For her, it is a calling—and a vessel for faith, healing and transformation. The multidisciplinary artist works across traditional painting, mosaic tile, large-scale murals and immersive sculpture, using bold color and spiritual symbolism to explore identity through the lived Black experience. Women frequently stand at the center of her work, portrayed with vulnerability, strength and reverence. Ashli’s Smyrna contribution, The Spirit of Joy, brings that mission into public view on a traffic utility box near Concord and Atkins roads. Her murals can also be found in Atlanta, Brooklyn, Montego Bay and at the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport. Among her most distinctive creations are interactive prayer chairs that activate when someone sits in them, transforming the viewer from observer to participant. Her work A Seat at My Table was acquired by the New Orleans African American Museum—a fitting home for art created to ensure that identity, history and healing are not only seen, but deeply felt. Elaine Stephenson Before “Artsy Elaine” covered buildings with joyful colors and encouraging words, Elaine Stephenson spent a decade building a career in graphic design. The Atlanta native studied design at the University of Georgia, developing a love of typography, strategy and bold visual communication. When she launched her own mural business, those professional skills became the foundation for a creative voice that was much more personal. Drawing from her experiences with anxiety and depression, Elaine creates bright, optimistic work intended to help people notice the beauty in life. Smyrna holds an especially meaningful place in that journey. Her first public-art project was a painted recycling bin created here in 2018. She later painted one of the city’s electrical boxes and returned in 2026 with the delightfully groovy Disco Cat for Brush & Box Fest. Elaine has now completed more than 50 murals across Georgia, including a 4,000-square-foot parking-garage entrance at Atlantic Station, where she serves as an artist-in-residence. From a recycling bin to thousands of square feet of concrete, her goal remains wonderfully consistent: transforming spaces from bland to beautiful while leaving those who encounter them feeling a little brighter. Haley Vaughn Haley Vaughn’s first career was also built around translating ideas into a visual language. She simply did not yet realize where that ability would eventually lead her. After earning a degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Georgia, Haley worked for several years as a middle-school American Sign Language interpreter. The work was meaningful, but something creative was missing. She began drawing seriously in 2020 and enrolled at the Savannah College of Art and Design two years later to pursue a second bachelor’s degree. In 2026, Haley graduated as salutatorian of SCAD Atlanta. Her colorful, whimsical illustrations now span children’s programming, murals, animation, advertising and surface design. Here in Smyrna, Haley created Catch a Falling Jonquil, the playful utility-box mural at Spring Road and Jonquil Drive near Rev Coffee. She has also designed posters for The Lavender Bookshop and works for the City of Smyrna as a historic building supervisor. Beyond Smyrna, her projects include an Atlanta mural for fintech company Payroc and surface designs featured during the 2025 SCAD Fashion Show. Now a production designer helping create children’s programs for national brands, Haley has transformed her natural ability to communicate visually into a career filled with warmth, humor and imagination. Smyrna’s public art does more than add color to a wall, sidewalk or utility box. It captures a moment in the city’s story—and invites every person who passes by to become part of it. Together, these seven artists remind us that creativity can grow from a childhood memory, a leap of faith, a difficult season, an unexpected career change or even the first loose scribble of an idea. Their work may look entirely different, but each piece leaves something behind: joy, reflection, connection and a renewed sense of possibility. So the next time a familiar corner catches your eye, pause for a moment. Look a little closer. Somewhere beneath the color is an artist’s story—and another small piece of the community Smyrna is continuing to become.

WHERE HOME BECOMES ART Komar Luxe brings a resort-inspired approach to real estate, design and building — creating homes that feel personal, polished and entirely your own.

There is a certain kind of home that feels like a deep breath. Not because it is oversized or overly polished, but because everything seems to work together — the light, the layout, the finishes, the outdoor spaces, the quiet sense that someone considered how it would feel to live there.
For Markesia and Korey Akinbami, founders of Komar Luxe Design Build & Komar Luxe Realty, that feeling is the point. Komar Luxe serves clients throughout the Atlanta area, including Smyrna, Vinings and surrounding communities, through real estate, design and construction services. But the team does not describe the company only in terms of buying, selling, building or renovating homes. To them, the work is more personal. “Every home we create is an intentional build,” Markesia says, “thoughtfully designed from the ground up to support a functional lifestyle, not just to look good in photos.” A beautiful room may photograph well, but a truly beautiful home has to welcome, work and hold the people who live there in a way that feels easy and lasting. It should support the everyday moments as much as the special ones — the quiet mornings, the full-house gatherings, the ordinary routines that become part of a family’s story. Markesia often describes the Komar Luxe approach as resort-style living, but not in a flashy way. It is quiet
luxury — the kind that reveals itself in the flow of a floor plan, the quality of the materials, the softness of a spalike bathroom, or the way a backyard becomes part of the home’s everyday rhythm. It is a home designed to feel like a retreat. That inspiration came, in part, from Florida. Before Komar Luxe became what it is today, the team was doing commercial construction work there. In Florida, they noticed homes that reflected a vacation-minded way of living — built for relaxation, gathering, indoor-outdoor connection and everyday enjoyment. They wanted to bring that same energy to Georgia. Their construction company, Ducere, had been operating since 2017, but the pandemic helped shape the Komar Luxe brand. When people suddenly found themselves working, living, schooling and gathering under one roof, home took on a different meaning. It became the center of everything. “It made them realize their home needed to be more than functional,” Korey says. “It needed to be a sanctuary.” CONTINUED > S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . “The floor plan is the canvas. The design is the brushstroke. No two homes ever have to feel the same.”
54
C UR B A P P E A L | HO M E + D E SIGN
Today, the Komar Luxe process begins with conversation. How do you live in your home now? What do you love? What do you wish felt different? When you travel, what is it about the places you stay that makes you feel most at ease? Maybe it is natural light. Maybe it is an open kitchen. Maybe it is a bathroom that feels like a spa, or an outdoor space that makes home feel like the destination. Those answers begin to shape the vision. “Personal style isn’t about trends,” Markesia says. “It’s about understanding how someone moves through their day and designing a home that supports that effortlessly.” That is where the creative side of homebuilding begins to show. Markesia and
Korey see the process as both technical and artistic. A floor plan provides the structure, but the choices layered on top of it give a home its identity. Markesia remembers building three homes side by side with the same floor plan. On paper, the bones were identical. But each home developed a different personality through color, finishes and design details. One plan. Three distinct homes. “The floor plan is the canvas,” Markesia says. “The design is the brushstroke.” That sense of originality is central to how Komar Luxe defines luxury. For Markesia, luxury is not just price point, square footage or dramatic finishes. It is comfort, quality and the feeling a person
has when they walk inside and know the space was built with intention. It is also durability. A true luxury home, she believes, should stand the test of time. Markesia and Korey consider not only how a home will look on move-in day, but how it will perform years later, from product selections and building systems to technology incorporated from the beginning. Because Komar Luxe brings real estate, design and construction together, clients benefit from a broader perspective. The team understands what a neighborhood can support, where an investment makes sense and when a client may be at risk of overbuilding. “We’re construction people at heart,” Korey says. “You’re getting a builder’s eye, a developer’s mindset and a realtor’s market knowledge all in one.”
Walking through a home, the Komar Luxe team is not only noticing visible details. They are looking for structural concerns, repair costs, future resale and whether a property is a smart move. That kind of insight helps clients move forward with more clarity, whether they are searching for the right property or imagining what an existing space could become. In Smyrna and Vinings, they see a market that fits beautifully with the Komar Luxe philosophy — connected and energetic, while still allowing people to create homes that feel private and peaceful. One recent project captured that balance, blending traditional farmhouse warmth with contemporary style. It included an open kitchen, dining and living concept, a finished basement, a wine room, a pool and a large outdoor space designed for gathering. CONTINUED >

The result was polished, but not cold. Elevated, but still livable. Looking ahead, Markesia and Korey are especially excited about the company’s next chapter: a retail center currently in development that will include a public-facing Komar Luxe design studio. Once complete, the studio will give people the chance to see materials, touch finishes and imagine what is possible in their own homes. For Markesia and Korey, that is what the work is really about. Not simply building houses, but helping people create spaces that feel like they were always meant for them. Not a showroom. Not someone else’s dream. Home.

The Art of S h ow i n g Up AT WHITEFIELD ACADEMY, STUDENTS ARE DISCOVERING THAT CREATIVITY HAS A WAY OF BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER.
ARTICLE BY STACEY SCOTT | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY WHITEFIELD ACADEMY

EDU CAT ION COR N E R | ED U CAT ION
The children at Tillman House know that when the Whitefield Academy art students arrive, something fun is about to happen. There may be paint. There may be paper. There may be face painting, craft supplies, or ceramic piggy banks. More than anything, there is the joy of older students sitting beside younger ones, helping them create something of their own. It is the kind of moment Whitefield’s Fine Arts Department hopes students will carry with them long after the paint dries. At Whitefield, fine arts are about learning technique, developing discipline, and pursuing excellence. Students rehearse, practice, study, perform, and create. But they are also encouraged to understand something deeper: artistic gifts become more meaningful when they are shared. For students in Whitefield’s Middle School National Junior Art Honor Society, that lesson has come to life through an ongoing relationship with Tillman House, a ministry of Smyrna First United Methodist Church that serves individuals and families in need. The partnership began in 2022 through Middle School Art Teacher Kim Machnik, who had a personal connection to Smyrna First United Methodist Church and learned more about the work Tillman House was doing with local children. That simple idea has grown into a tradition. Twice a year, Whitefield students visit Tillman House with art projects for the children in its after-school program. Over time, those visits have included hands-on crafts, face painting, holiday activities, and plenty of encouragement as younger students create. Upper School art students have also joined in, helping with homework, Christmas party activities, and special craft projects. At one end-of-school-year celebration, Whitefield students helped children paint ceramic piggy banks. For Kim, the value of the partnership is easy to see.
“The young children love our students coming to create art with them,” she says. “Our Whitefield students benefit from serving the community as well as understanding how important it is to put others ahead of self, but also to share their God-given creative gifts.” That phrase — sharing creative gifts — captures the heart behind Whitefield’s fine arts program. The students are not simply completing a project or volunteering for a few hours. They are learning how creativity can become connection. They are learning how art can soften a room, start a conversation, and help someone feel seen. Sometimes service looks like pulling up a chair, handing a child a paintbrush, and saying, “Let’s make something together.” Kim says the experience has become especially meaningful for her students. “It has been so rewarding for my NJAHS students every time we go,” she says. “They see the joy in the children’s faces when they arrive. Every year, I love hearing them say how excited they are to go back or to be the new eighth grade NJAHS members that ‘get to go.’” That little phrase says a lot. They do not have to go. They get to go. For Fine Arts Director Steve Henson, that spirit reflects the broader mission of fine arts at Whitefield Academy. Students are encouraged to identify and develop their God-given creative gifts while pursuing excellence in both product and performance. They are also invited to see those gifts as something that can serve others. “When they can develop their gifts while serving and engaging with others, everyone benefits,” Steve says. That same idea shows up beyond the visual arts classroom. Throughout the year, Whitefield music students take their talents into the community as well. Band students have performed at retirement communities, civic events, churches, community celebrations, and Smyrna Little League Opening Day. Choir students have shared their voices at Braves games and Smyrna’s annual Tree Lighting Ceremony. CONTINUED >

In each setting, the details may be different, but the purpose feels connected. A jazz standard can bring back a memory. A familiar holiday song can gather a crowd. A national anthem can turn a spring morning at the ballpark into something more meaningful. Music, like visual art, reaches across age, background, and experience. For students, those moments offer lessons that cannot be fully taught in a classroom. They learn to read a room. They learn to notice the people in front of them. They learn that art is not only about how beautifully something is made or performed. It is also about how generously it is offered. At Whitefield Academy, fine arts students are learning to create with confidence and purpose. They are learning the discipline of practice and the courage of performance. They are also learning that their gifts can brighten someone’s day, lift a spirit, bring generations together, and remind people they are not forgotten. Sometimes art hangs on a wall. Sometimes it is played from a stage. Sometimes it is sung under twinkling lights in the middle of town. And sometimes, it is found in the smile of a child holding a freshly painted piggy bank, proud of what they made and happy that someone showed up to make it with them. That may be the most beautiful kind of art of all.

As you head towards Atlanta along the I-75 corridor, your eyes are naturally drawn to the massive “Cumberland” mural painted by The Loss Preservation Company. This expansive piece showcases the endless activities, parks, and vibrant culture that makes our region special. Local coffee shops offer their own dynamic canvases. At Smyrna Coffee, visitors are immediately greeted by Lauren Alger’s cheerful window murals before stepping inside. Once you enter and catch the rich aroma of fresh espresso, your eyes land on Jesus Valdivia’s bold masterpiece splashed across the back wall. Featuring vibrant hues and giant coffee beans, it perfectly captures the warmth and hospitality of this neighborhood gathering spot. As the old saying goes, don’t believe everything you read on the internet. Our Smyrna, Vinings community is brimming with artistic expression, and these incredible murals are just a glimpse of what local talent has to offer. Next time you are out, take a closer look, our city is a living gallery!
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ASHLEY PUTNAM
The Smyrna, Vinings community features a vibrant, ever-growing art scene where creativity flourishes in unexpected places. Everyday utility boxes, fire hydrants, and brick walls are increasingly alive with brilliant color. If you search online for “murals in Smyrna,” search engines claim there are none, but local residents know better. Hidden in plain sight, breathtaking public art brightens every corner of our community. Take a drive through town, and you will instantly recognize Kristen Ramsey’s iconic mural adorning the side of Vickery Ace Hardware. It has quickly become a beloved neighborhood landmark, turned into flags and stickers to showcase our city’s pride. But have you noticed the whimsical, colorful fences tucked delicately behind Rev Coffee, brought to life by local artist Jert? Or the striking new murals at North Cooper Lake Bike Park, designed by Miles Davis and Dana Montlack? Their work weaves together natural and abstract expressions, bringing a unified sense of energy and beauty to our outdoor space.

WHEN Art OPENS Doors Artportunity Knocks uses creativity to help young people discover confidence, purpose and possibility. ARTICLE BY STACEY SCOTT PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY CHRIS WOODS It started with three students in a two-bedroom apartment. Chris Woods and his wife, Ty, had not moved to Georgia with a plan to launch a nonprofit. They simply saw a need. They wanted to create a safe place where teenagers could gather on Friday evenings — a place with encouragement, positive relationships and room to belong. Within months, those three students became 40. Looking back, Chris realizes they were doing more than opening their home. They were building trust. That trust became Artportunity Knocks, a nonprofit organization that empowers young people through the arts, education, community service and cultural connection. Nearly 20 years later, its mission remains personal: helping young people see what is possible. “While many people know us because of our arts programming, we’re really in the business of developing people,” Chris says. Creativity is the doorway. The work goes far beyond teaching a student to paint, dance, perform or produce music. Through Artportunity Knocks, students are introduced to music production, songwriting, podcasting, filmmaking, photography, graphic design, animation, dance, theater, visual arts, fashion design, STEM, robotics and entrepreneurship. Each program also includes mentoring, leadership development, academic support and workforce readiness. The goal is not simply to help students become better artists. It is to help them become confident, capable people who understand their own value. Chris and Ty both came from backgrounds in the arts and youth development. They knew personally how creative opportunities could shape confidence, leadership and direction. At the same time, they were watching arts education disappear from many schools because of budget cuts. Programs that had shaped their own lives were becoming harder for students to access.
70
M UST SE E | EDUCATI O N
Rather than talk about the problem, Chris says, they decided to become part of the solution. Today, Artportunity Knocks connects creativity with career readiness, showing students that art is not only a hobby. It can become a career, a business, a platform or a way to impact the world. For students who may not always feel successful in traditional settings, that exposure can be life-changing. “Sometimes the student who struggles academically becomes the best photographer in the room,” Chris says. “The quiet student becomes an incredible actor. The student who has difficulty focusing becomes an amazing music producer.” CONTINUED >

And once a young person experiences success in one area, something begins to shift. Confidence replaces insecurity. Leadership replaces fear. Purpose replaces uncertainty. Every rehearsal teaches discipline. Every performance teaches courage. Every creative project teaches perseverance. Every challenge teaches resilience. Chris has seen the impact come full circle. Former students have returned years later as volunteers, interns, staff members, educators, entrepreneurs, artists and community leaders. To him, that is success — not only when students receive an opportunity, but when they become people who create opportunities for others. The organization’s connection to Smyrna, Vinings and Cobb County runs deep. Artportunity Knocks was born in Smyrna, in that apartment at 1408 Cobb Crossing, where students began discovering who they were and Chris and Ty began discovering who they would become. Many of its earliest partnerships, volunteers and programs were built here. “This community helped shape who we are,” Chris says, “and we’re committed to continuing to invest right back into it.” That investment continues through programs and partnerships across the area, including Back to School Cobb, hosted this year with the support of the Atlanta Braves Foundation at The Battery Atlanta. What began as a school supply event has grown into a community celebration with backpacks, resources, health services, entertainment, performances and connections to local organizations. For Chris, the heart of the work is simple: every community already holds its greatest resource. Its people. Especially its young people. Artportunity Knocks exists to help them see it, believe it and build from it. “Leadership, to me, is helping people see potential they may not yet see in themselves,” Chris says. And sometimes, that begins with an open door, a safe place to gather and someone willing to say, “You belong here.”

Wear Colors That Truly
LOVE YOU A quick guide to finding flattering shades for life.
KNOW YOUR UNDERTONE Your undertone doesn’t change with the seasons. Check your wrist veins: blue means cool, green means warm, and unclear may be neutral. Cool tones love jewel colors; warm tones glow in earthy, rich shades.
CONSIDER CONTRAST Do you have high contrast between your hair, skin, and eyes (like dark hair and light skin)? High contrast looks great in bold, clear colors. Low contrast (like blonde hair and fair skin)? Softer, blended tones often suit you best.
THE WHITE VS. CREAM TEST Hold a white and ivory shirt near your face. If white flatters, you're likely cooltoned. If ivory glows against your skin, you're likely warm-toned. This quick test reveals your undertone with ease.
BUILD AROUND YOUR “WOW” COLORS Once you identify a few colors that make you look and feel amazing, use those as the base of your palette. These are your power colors—build your wardrobe and makeup around them!
PRO TIP You don’t have to follow rules perfectly. Your color palette is a guide, not a limit. Mix, match, and most importantly—wear what makes you feel beautiful.

As the season transitions into fall, it still features the warm, sunny days of summer but nights start to drop into the crisp temperatures. That leaves us in the limbo of wanting cool, refreshing drinks part of the time but also craving the deeper, spice-infused flavors of autumn. This recipe for apple cider sangria is the perfect blending of the seasons, leaving you feeling both refreshed and warmed through the deep flavors and interesting hints of spice. It’s a great drink to add to any dinner party, cocktail gathering, back deck after-hours get-together, or birthday bash. Here’s what you need to make the perfect mid-season cocktail to enhance whatever event you have planned.
ARTICLE BY ALLISON BANKSTON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
INGREDIENTS:
DIRECTIONS:
• • • • • •
Combine all ingredients together and stir. Refrigerate for an hour or so (or longer) before serving. The drink can be enjoyed immediately, if desired, but the longer you let the ingredients sit and mix, the deeper the flavors will be. Giving it time to develop will make the drink more captivating and interesting.
1 bottle, standard size, of pinot grigio 2 1/2 cups fresh apple cider 1 cup club soda 1/2 cup ginger brandy 3 honey crisp apples, chopped 3 pears, chopped
NOTE: Regular brandy can be used, but ginger brandy gives it an extra kick of flavor.
