For Jim Duelmer, managing partner of Vinings Mortgage, Smyrna isn’t just a city—it’s his family’s home. Since marrying his wife Tracie in 2000, they’ve planted deep roots in this lively community, raising their children, Callie and Drew, amidst its welcoming embrace. From preschool days at Smyrna First United Methodist Church to spirited afternoons on the fields of Smyrna Soccer and Little League, the Duelmers have woven themselves into the fabric of Smyrna’s vibrant community.

Their story is one of growth and connection, with both Callie and Drew attending Campbell High School, creating lasting friendships and cherished memories along the way. Callie, now a junior at the University of Georgia, and Drew, a senior at CHS, embody Smyrna’s spirit as they navigate their futures.

Jim’s professional journey parallels his personal one, marked by the founding of Vinings Mortgage in April 2000, signifying not just a business venture but a pledge to serve Smyrna Vinings. Connection Empowering Student Artists through Community

LOCAL ARTS LEADERS TEAM UP IN SUPPORT OF SMYRNA’S GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL ARTISTS –GIVING THEM AN EXPERIENCE TO REMEMBER.

Under the leadership of Michael Ross, Campbell High School’s IB Art Program is thriving, but unless you are a student or a parent at the school, you wouldn’t necessarily know it.  Councilmember Tim Gould and Michelle Murphy, both parents of seniors in the program, knew right where to turn to change that: Robert Harrison and Vanya Foote, two of Smyrna’s most dedicated arts leaders.

“A public exhibition of local students’ artwork is an ideal way to connect our residents with our arts community, support our Smyrna area schools, and provide an engaging community event,” says Tim Gould, Mayor Pro Tem whose son, Jack, will be featured in the exhibit.  “In one call to Robert to pitch the idea of an exhibition, he quickly said yes and offered to host an event at The Old Smyrna Firehouse.”

The event, happening Saturday, April 20th from 6-9pm, will immerse students in a professional gallery opening, adding to their four years of academic artistic growth the “experience of taking their work beyond the walls of their classroom,” says parent Michelle Murphy.  “We want this to become a regular event supporting the students.”

Creating a hub for arts events was Robert’s goal for his dynamic home. “Since Smyrna doesn’t have an Arts Center or a gallery space even, I wanted to make a space that was large enough to host events of that nature – to have kind of a clubhouse for the arts community.”  A co-founder of Indie Arts Alliance, Robert is also a Smyrna Arts Council board member, working with President Vanya Foote to bring Arts to the forefront.

Facilitating a public exhibition of the students’ work not only rewards their efforts, but also provides the forum for the art to realize its ultimate purpose “to be shared, to inform, to comfort, to educate, to entertain- to impact a community,” says Vanya.  After the event on April 20th, part of the exhibit moves to the Smyrna Community Center for an extended display, sponsored by the Smyrna Arts Council and the City of Smyrna.

Community impact is “always greater with collaboration,” Vanya adds.

One way to do this is by actively participating in local organizations such as Rotary International and the Smyrna Business Association (SBA). With a network of over 1.2 million members across the globe, Rotary International is dedicated to tackling humanitarian challenges. Through their six areas of focus, including promoting peace, fighting disease, and supporting education, Rotary empowers individuals to make a tangible difference in their communities. Matt Jarrod, President of The Rotary Club of Vinings Cumberland shared, ‘This January, we gave out over $123,000 in grants to local children’s charities making it a total of $1.6 Million given to local charities in our 27 year history. Race sponsors like Printpack, Paces Ferry Veterinary Clinic, Lockton, and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, and many others make these significant grant funds possible!’ Additionally, since July 1st, the club has logged more than 735 volunteer service hours.

Safeguarding Your Brand’s Future

Initiating Protection is a law firm that specializes in helping our community’s small and mid-sized businesses with brand protection. This firm was founded by Richard Rimer after he heard the phrase “but I didn’t know” one too many times.

Richard previously worked as a trademark lawyer for large firms in Midtown Atlanta, representing large companies from around the world. Richard explained, “I often heard the smaller companies my clients were challenging say that they had no idea that intellectual property applied to them.” He realized that these businesses needed education, information, and representation, and that he could not provide this effectively from a large firm environment. This is what inspired him to start his own law firm.

Richard said the first act at Initiating Protection was to change his professional title from “trademark lawyer” to “brand protection counsel.” He said he knew his best clients would not know if they had a trademark, “but they would know that they had a brand.” He also knew that many of these companies would have no idea that their brands may contain risk and that there could be ways to enhance the value inside their brands.

“There are two main concerns with any brand,” explains Richard. First is whether the company has chosen a name that is distinct enough to warrant legal protection. “Companies often complain that someone is copying them, and are shocked to learn that some brands have a lesser level of legal rights.”

The second concern involves public confusion. You cannot choose a name that is similar to a competitor’s name as this can lead to you being forced to change your company name and pay damages to the other company. Richard shared that he’s seen many companies that were forced to close after making this mistake.

Brand protection is the combination of four separate steps. The most important step is performing a search to understand the risks and opportunities

inside your brand. This allows you to plan for tomorrow. In many cases, a company should then take steps to authenticate its rights. Much like recording a deed at a courthouse, this lets the world know that you claim rights in your brand. Finally, you need to police to make sure others are not infringing your rights and then enforce your rights if necessary.

Tomorrow’s concerns can be effectively addressed today. Gaining legal rights in your brands may be crucial in resolving a dispute on social media platforms or some other technology that may soon be essential for business. Demonstrating a commitment to protecting intellectual property rights prompts quicker responses from social media companies and deters would-be infringers.

When asked what advice he had for small business owners, Richard responded that “the most important thing is to be yourself and be unique. This is surprisingly important in the area of intellectual property.” He also mentioned that “companies should not confuse the approval of a name from the Secretary of State with permission to use the name. These are two separate things.”

“Our purpose is to give people the resources they need to create the voiceover career they want,” says Heidi.  “It’s so cool to see people create these careers that are just really incredible.”

Atlanta Voiceover Studio is guided by their shared values of Stewardship, Freedom, and Grace.  “We always think about how we are stewarding students, the instructor’s time and expertise, and money –when we set a fee for a class, does it correlate with what students are getting out of it?”  Grace is about “meeting people where they are,” and Freedom is “a reminder to us that the business started from needs.  We want to keep ourselves open: what are the needs, how can we best meet them.”

For the last five years, they have helped meet the needs of Atlanta Community Food Bank through “Give & Learn,” where participants exchange canned goods or monetary donations for an evening of panels with industry professionals.  Facilitating this event is an annual highlight, and it continues to grow each year.

Their investment in the Studio has returned unexpected personal dividends, like retaining information by teaching it.  “There is also accountability – you’re held to a higher standard,” says Heidi.  And Mike says, “You become way more efficient at doing things.  You maximize time.”

In his spare time, you can often find Mike at Village Bourbon & Cigar.  “It’s just neat to see how this place is growing.”  “We’re pretty partial to Smyrna,” Heidi adds.  “It’s a great place to live.”

Smyrna Vinings Lifestyle recently marked a significant milestone -- celebrating our first anniversary!  It has been an incredible journey, and we couldn’t have done it without the support of our amazing community.

Our anniversary festivities were a testament to the incredible encouragement we’ve received from friends, partners, and the community at large. Gathering at Atkins Park Smyrna, we shared laughter, stories, and cherished moments with those who have made this past year truly memorable.

We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the local businesses and individuals who generously donated prizes, as well as to Great American Cookie Company for providing delicious treats that added an extra sweetness to the celebration. It’s gestures like these that remind us of the warmth and generosity that define the Smyrna/Vinings community.

Being welcomed into the homes and lives of our readers has been an honor and a privilege. We’ve had the opportunity to share heartwarming stories, highlight local businesses, and provide valuable information to our readers. Investing in indoor plants can not only spruce up your living space, but also bring numerous health and well-being benefits

Bringing the outdoors in with the use of house plants is a great way to add color and dimension to your space. We sat down with Jesse Nelson at Family Tree Nursery, based in Kansas, and discussed the benefits of incorporating plant life into your home. “There are plenty of studies on the health benefits of plants, and the evidence suggests that being around plants and caring for plant life increases overall wellness,” explains Nelson. “Anytime you bring a plant into a home or work environment, it’s going to make you feel better. It is going to beautify the space in a way that art cannot, and they also have the added benefit of  purifying the air.” There are a wide variety of indoor plants that work for any space and light situation that you may have. Regardless if you have a green thumb or a black thumb, there are plant varieties that fit your lifestyle. Here are a few of our favorite indoor plants to incorporate into your home.

Anthurium has gorgeous, colorful flowers and is the easiest indoor flowering plant to care for. It comes in a variety of colors including red, white, orange and purple. Anthurium likes to be dry, so let it go bone dry before watering. Fertilize every so often, especially when blooming. These plants do not like direct sunlight and can be repotted every three to five years.

This cascading plant is gaining popularity due to its succulent-like leaves and also because it is fairly easy to care for. The Hope Peperomia likes medium to bright direct sunlight. It does well as a tabletop plant or a hanging plant. Watering is only needed one time a month regardless of plant size.

This is a slow-growing variety that is architectural and compact. This plant is a great statement piece and looks great in an entryway or by a chair. There are a lot of varieties and colors of the Dracaena. They are very resilient in low light and are great for an office space with little or no light. They like to stay on the dry side, so they like to be watered when they are about ½ to ¾ of the way dry. When watering, give it a good soak. Pro tip: A moisture meter can be purchased and used to determine how dry your plant is to help determine when it is time to water again.

Every day I pray for the privilege to share the good news of Jesus with someone who has not trusted Christ to be his or her Savior. Not long after praying for this divine appointment, I walked down into a hotel lobby and God answered my prayer. A salesman sadly shared with me that early in his life he was a part of a church, but he no longer claimed to be a Christian. An experience within a church deeply wounded him, and though it had happened a few decades ago, he talked of it as if it had happened yesterday.

Over the years of being a pastor, I have heard these stories of church hurt more often than I would like to admit. Frankly, one story like this is far too many. On this occasion, my mind was immediately drawn to a story in Luke’s Gospel. A man named Zacchaeus, described as being “small in stature,” learns that Jesus is coming. He could not see Jesus because of the crowd, so he climbed a tree. Jesus looked up, their eyes met, and God said: “Hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.” After

sharing this story with my new friend, I empathized with him in his hurt. I then shared that I believed God led us to meet each other so I could share with him this truth: Have the courage to be like Zacchaeus. Ask God to help you get to a place where people don’t obstruct your view of the beauty and love of Christ. For when you see Jesus for who He truly is, just like Zacchaeus, He will change your life forever.
