LIFESTYLE LETTER

Letter from the Editor

January 2024

Dear Readers, As we step into the new year, there's an undeniable sense of anticipation and opportunity that fills the air. It symbolizes a chance for a fresh start, new ambitions, and a pursuit of goals. However, we understand that for some, January can carry the weight of past endeavors that fell short, coupled with the pressure of expecting this year to be different. In this edition of Smyrna Vinings City Lifestyle, our approach is rooted in a commitment to sustainable, long-term improvements rather than quick fixes for temporary satisfaction. Making small changes in my environment, whether it's sorting out the basement or tidying up the closet, really boosts my mental well-being. These simple tasks may seem ordinary, but they make a big impact. Organizing and simplifying things gives me a refreshed feeling, like I've not only cleared physical space but also mental clutter. Seeing the tangible results puts me in a positive mindset and reminds me that even small adjustments in my surroundings can add up to a lot more peace and satisfaction overall. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brulee every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND treat yourself to that irresistible ice cream at Marble Slab Creamery. It’s not what you do some days - it’s what you do most days that paves the way to a more fulfilling and fabulous year. Here's to you, dear readers! We believe in your journey and are cheering you on every step of the way. Warm regards,

FOR ARTIST KRISTEN RAMSEY, SMYRNA’S PROLIFIC VISIONARY, EVERYTHING LEAD HER RIGHT WHERE SHE NEEDED TO BE

FINDING HER PLACE 16

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | ARTS + CU LT U RE

In 2011, Smyrna served as a homecoming of sorts to Georgia-native but then Michigan resident Kristen Ramsey. A graphic designer by trade, this mother of three daughters found Smyrna thanks to its quality school districts. Little did she know Smyrna would help her find her

“We have created this little family where we all cheer each other on. And that’s exactly what I needed as an artist. My work is an expression of my soul, and also the messages that I most need to hear. And I’ve noticed that when I’m the most authentic

“WHEN I’M THE MOST AUTHENTIC IN MY WORK IT RESONATES THE MOST.” most authentic self. “I needed an outlet, so I started painting. I was an artist already, but I started making stuff just because I wanted to make it.” Looking to build community, she initiated artist meet-ups at Rev Coffee. “For a while, it was just me and then me and a couple of other people,” but eventually, she met Allison Schorr, another artist and mom. “Kristen became an instrumental support person for my creative life,” says Allison, owner of Smyrna’s Secret Gallery, a short-term rental filled with local art. The two friends took a welding class at the Old Smyrna Firehouse, met Robert Harrison, and “Indie Arts Alliance just kind of - flamed out of there.”

in my work it resonates the most.” Smyrna has served as a safe haven for Kristen to move through the sometimes-messy pursuit of authenticity, continually anchored by her artist friends. “That’s what’s kept me here, this group - people that want to make things happen.” “Kristen is a force of goodness that has founded community and connection for so many artists in Smyrna,” says Chelsea Darling, Smyrna-based owner of Darling Metals. “It’s not something she’d ever brag about, but much of the art and creativity that has flourished in this city is a direct result of her many years of hard work and vision.” CONTINUED >

That vision included creating the infrastructure to support the artists who live here. “I had friends in my life who liked to use the phrase ‘Create the things you wish existed,’ and so I was like, ‘I want to make something happen’.” The creation of the Indie Arts Alliance in 2017 has facilitated art openings, group shows, and opportunities for artists to sell their work without having to leave Smyrna. But vitally, it also provides the support artists need “because we all have this self-doubt thing that we do.” In February of 2018, Indie Arts Alliance supported Kristen in her largest painting project to date and provided the city with its public art centerpiece. Located at Vickery Ace Hardware on Concord Road is Kristen’s now ubiquitous Smyrna: The Jonquil City mural. “It meant so much to us to have the first Smyrna mural on our building,” says Susan Harlan, owner of Vickery Ace Hardware. “Kristen was a dream to work with and it has received such a positive reaction from our customers and the community at large.” Indie Arts Alliance continues to evolve and thrive, with Kristen and other members committed to “seeing how things go with each season of life.”

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | ARTS + CU LT U RE

“CREATE THE THINGS YOU WISH EXISTED.” What does Kristen hope to see in Smyrna’s growing arts scene? “Definitely more public art,” says Kristen. “Placemaking matters. People want to be proud of where they live, where they can show off the places that are cool to them - and I really think that public art helps create that.” For everything Smyrna has given Kristen Ramsey, she has given back to the community tenfold. Kristen’s artistic marks are all over the city, from the “Welcome to Smyrna” sign by the train tracks, to the jonquils on the Smyrna Little League jerseys, to the Little Free Library in Riverview, and so much more. Ever since moving to Smyrna motivated Kristen Ramsey to pick up a paintbrush, she has been our arts ambassador. And that’s something we can all be proud of.

ARTICLE BY DIANA COOKE

Do you feel like your cabinets and closets are overflowing? Are you overwhelmed with paperwork? Can you find the items you need? Do you spend too much time cleaning your home? It’s time to get past the roadblocks and have a fresh start in the upcoming year. Organizing can seem overwhelming. But don’t stress! Here are a few tips to help you get started: First and foremost, take a deep breath. Remember the end goal: My home will be organized! Analyze the current organization in your home. Find and acknowledge what isn’t working for you and why it isn’t working. Set a timeline. Organizing a home takes time, so setting a timeline keeps you committed. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a daily, weekly, or monthly plan. Pick a task each day or week. Every little bit helps. Know your goals. Make sure you set realistic goals, not impossible ones. You will feel successful as you complete each goal. Prioritize the areas that need the most work. Start with one room or area, then work your way through the house. Pick smaller tasks to start – a cabinet or a junk drawer. Work your way to larger projects. Setting small goals in the beginning will make it easier to work towards your ultimate goal.

Retrieve organizational products. Bins and baskets are great for grouping like items together. You may be surprised by how much space you save by using these products. Labels are another great tool for organization. Labels are great for visualizing where things go and help kids stay organized. Donate! As you organize, decide what you really need. Designate an area for donations. Remember, less is better. The less you have, the less you have to maintain and clean. If you need help, don’t be afraid to ask. Enlist a friend as an accountability partner. Get your kids involved to help with certain tasks, whether it’s sorting magazines or Tupperware. You can also hire an organizer. This will jumpstart your process and bring in a new perspective. An organizer has experience helping you work through the emotions attached to items and expedites the process with dedicated time and experience. It’s important to find an organizer you feel comfortable with who has a “no judgment” policy. Celebrate! No matter how small the task, be proud of your progress. Lastly, create routines and continue maintenance. Maintenance means evaluating areas every quarter or every six months. Life changes, kids’ activities change and your organizational system may also need to change. Home organization is worth the time investment. It will create calm in your daily schedule. By following these simple tips, you may not even recognize your own home! Call your friends, family, or local organizer and get started today!

CULTIVATING A STRONG AND fulfilling marriage

DISCOVER PRACTICAL STEPS FOR LASTING CONNECTION AND JOYFUL PARTNERSHIP ARTICLE BY MAYRA RICHARDS

M EN TA L WE LLBE IN G | L IF E + CU LT U RE

It’s a new year and a new year usually brings new resolutions or goals, a chance to start fresh or revitalize a healthy lifestyle. Or maybe you just need a second chance to beat that sweet tooth (you got this!). Often, our relationships are also caught up in this yearly reflection. Something like, “I love our marriage, I just wish that ___” or “I love how we used to ___”. Whatever it may be, these kinds of drastic relationship resolutions can usher in a lot of pressure and stress that end up having the opposite effect than we intended. Well, I want to give you hope that when it comes to relationships, we can take control and make positive changes towards the relationship we want. Step by step and day by day. Let’s talk about marriage! Many of us enter into marriage with naive notions and expectations, including myself. We want a happy, fulfilling marriage - the kind of marriage portrayed in the movies. Well, I am here to tell you that you can absolutely have the marriage of your dreams! I know this because…I do. Is it perfect? No, in no way shape or form, but is it so good and what I want? Yes! I’ve gotten to this point over many years and many conflicts that have led to true intimacy and connection. CONTINUED >

Transform your marriage with intentional choices— cultivate connection and growth daily, aligning actions with shared values for lasting joy. The benefits of a strong marriage are many, which include: lower stress, a better mental health state, joy, and a sense of purpose. I am sure you can google a list of the benefits of marriage and it would list all of these things, but how do we cultivate this strong marriage? Every marriage grows when there is a deep emotional connection, a sense of safety, and being open with one another. If you were sitting in my office, I would tell you the number one thing you can do to start this growth is intentionality. We have to treat our marriage like any goal we set our hearts and minds to. We need a map, and an overview of what we want first so that we know where we are heading. If the goal is to have a fulfilling marriage, then we have to know what that means for us.

PRACTICAL TIPS:

1. You and your spouse make a list of your top 5 marriage/family values. This will give you an idea of what to focus on during the year. 2. Define practical ways to achieve each value throughout the year. One of our marriage values is growth, therefore we decided that

marriage counseling, coaching, and retreats are part of our yearly rhythms. The same goes for connection - we plan an adults-only vacation once a year and it does not have to be too far or a long stay (especially for those of us with kids and pets). 3. Set time aside at the beginning of the year to plan your year together so you can say yes to things that align with your values. That would mean that we look up retreats and plan vacations, etc. Book it and put it on your calendar. This gives you a higher likelihood of actually doing it. So, intentionally is needed each day, especially in small ways: kiss your spouse goodbye before you run out the door, send an encouraging text message during your day, give a 30 second hug while cooking dinner. If you are like me, then you will likely need an alarm to remind you that your husband loves to hold your hand. Just remember that you can only control YOU and that needs to be the most freeing concept in your life. Know yourself and set yourself up for success. A happy, healthy marriage does not just happen, it is cultivated daily.

ARTICLE BY STACEY SCOTT

EXP E RT H E LP | P RO FES SION AL SE RVICE S

In the digital age, our lives are documented through an endless stream of photographs. From family gatherings to travel adventures, we capture every moment with the tap of a smartphone. However, this abundance of images presents a unique challenge – how do we organize and curate our vast photo collections to truly tell our stories? David McDonough of Modern Image Atlanta sheds light on the key challenges individuals face and provides insights into the transformative impact of a well-organized photo collection. The first hurdle in managing a photo collection is often deciding where to start. The sheer volume of digital images we accumulate can be daunting. To address this challenge, it’s crucial to establish clear goals. Are you looking to digitize your entire collection, or do you prefer a curated approach, creating a visual narrative through carefully selected images? The shift from film to digital photography has also altered the way we approach curating our memories. In the past, the limitations of film rolls constrained the number of photos taken, leading people to select the best shots for albums or frames. Now, with the ability to capture thousands of images effortlessly, the challenge lies in curating and telling a compelling story. Setting goals and deciding on a curation approach can provide a roadmap for tackling this challenge effectively. As we enter a new year, the benefits of having an organized photo collection become even more evident. Beyond the practical advantages of easily creating gifts like puzzles, blankets, or personalized items, the emotional impact on individuals and families is profound. A well-organized photo collection allows families to relive cherished memories, telling stories that span generations. The act of sharing old photos can be a powerful tool in combating cognitive decline, as researchers increasingly find that visual recall stimulates memory. The variety of available photo products also provides opportunities for unique and personalized

gifts, making the process of creating meaningful presents for special occasions more accessible than ever. Initiating and maintaining an organized photo collection requires a systematic approach. Here are some practical tips that David suggests to Modern Image Atlanta’s clients looking to keep their memories in order: • Define Your Organization Method: Decide whether you want to organize photos by date, place, person, or a combination of these. This will help create a logical structure for your collection. • Consistent Backups: Ensure your photos are regularly backed up using cloud services like Dropbox, iPhoto, or Google. Consistency is key in safeguarding your memories. For details on storage options that you only need to purchase once and are guaranteed “forever,” reach out to the experts at Modern Image Atlanta. • Streamline Your Phone Library: Keep your phone’s photo library clutter-free by moving less frequently accessed photos to an external archive. This makes it easier to locate and enjoy the photos you want to revisit. • Curate and Delete: Regularly go through your collection, deleting test shots, duplicates, and irrelevant videos. A curated collection not only tells a better story but also eases the organization process. • Establish a Backup Routine: Implement a regular backup schedule to prevent the loss of valuable memories. A well-organized and selectively curated collection will make this process more manageable. Organizing and preserving your photo collection is a journey that requires thoughtful planning and consistent effort. By setting clear goals, curating your memories, and implementing David’s practical tips for organization, you can turn your sea of digital memories into a meaningful and accessible collection that will be cherished by generations to come.

Shake, Sip & Repeat! SPICE UP YOUR DRY JANUARY WITH A FESTIVE SPICED APPLE MOCKTINI!

Oh, January - the month when 4 weeks feels like an eternity, when we’re all a little depressed the holidays are over and the decorations are down, and reality hits us all that we’ve probably been overindulging since….let’s be honest….Halloween. But January is also about fresh starts and I love the idea of starting 2024 off in a healthy, money saving way! If you’re anything like me, Dry January might be something you’ve usually rolled your eyes about in the past. Four weeks off drinking in the worst month of the year?! However, this concept of a fresh, healthy start to the year has encouraged so many people to ditch the alcohol, save some money, and start the new year off on a positive note. Check out my favorite recipe for a Spiced Apple Mocktini to make your Dry January a little more enjoyable!

ingredients: • 2 ounces apple cider • 2 ounces of Ginger Beer • 1 ounce of cranberry juice • Ice

directions: Shake ingredients together, pour in a beautiful glass, and garnish with a slice of apple and a cinnamon stick.

THE POWER OF SETTING INTENTIONS: EMBRACING A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO PERSONAL GROWTH

As we bid farewell to another year and eagerly embark on a new chapter, it’s natural for individuals to reflect upon their life’s trajectory and consider setting goals. Traditionally, New Year’s resolutions have been the go-to approach for many, but could the concept of setting intentions offer a more meaningful and effective strategy? Let’s delve into the benefits of setting intentions and why they can be embraced with open arms. While resolutions tend to focus on specific outcomes or behaviors, intentions are rooted in a holistic understanding of personal growth. Rather than solely concentrating on the end result, intentions encompass the process, values, and emotional elements involved in achieving a desired change. By setting intentions, individuals invite a mindful and reflective approach to their journey, shifting the focus to personal development rather than mere goals.

HERE IS AN EXAMPLE OF AN INTENTION VERSUS A NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION: Intention: I want to cultivate a healthier lifestyle and prioritize my physical and mental well-being. I aim to be mindful and take regular breaks to rest and rejuvenate. I plan to incorporate daily exercise, meditation, and healthy eating habits into my routine. New Year’s Resolution: I will lose 20 pounds by going to the gym five times a week and following a strict diet plan. While both examples aim for a healthier lifestyle, the intention focuses on making long-term changes and embracing overall well-being. On the other hand, the New Year’s resolution is specific, time-bound, and heavily focused on physical goals. The intention allows room for flexibility. Resolutions tend to be outcome-focused and often involve drastic changes that are difficult to maintain long-term. Intentions, on the other hand, emphasize sustainable habits and gradual progress. By shifting the client’s focus towards daily mindful actions and self-reflection, intentions aid in developing habits that support their desired changes. Our therapists can guide clients in cultivating practices such as journaling, meditation, or gratitude exercises that promote self-awareness, accountability, and long-term growth. By embracing intentions over traditional resolutions, individuals embark on a journey of self-discovery, resilience, and personal development. At Summit’s Edge, our therapists are here to support you on this transformative journey.

Charting Your Financial

course A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO SETTING AND ACHIEVING MONEY GOALS IN THE NEW YEAR

“Establish clear financial priorities, build an emergency fund, and regularly adapt your plan. Remember, the journey to financial well-being is ongoing. Stay committed, As the new year unfolds, it’s an opportune time to set financial goals that can pave the way for a more secure and prosperous future. Whether you’re looking to build an emergency fund, pay off debt, save for a major purchase, or invest for the long term, establishing a clear plan is key. celebrate small victories, and navigate changes for sustained success in the new year and beyond.”

First, take stock of your current financial situation. Assess your income, expenses, and debts. Create a budget that reflects your financial reality, allowing you to identify areas where you can cut back or save more. Understanding your starting point is crucial for developing realistic and achievable goals. Next, prioritize your financial objectives. Determine what matters most to you and your family. Whether it’s eliminating high-interest debt, saving for a down payment on a house, or investing for retirement, establish clear priorities to guide your decision-making throughout the year. Consider building an emergency fund. Having a financial safety net can provide peace of mind and protect you from unexpected expenses. Aim to set aside three to six months’ worth of living expenses in a liquid and easily accessible account. Additionally, review and adjust your investment strategy. If you haven’t started investing yet, explore different investment options based on your risk tolerance and financial goals. If you’re already investing, reassess your portfolio to ensure it aligns with your objectives and risk tolerance. Lastly, track your progress regularly. Set milestones and celebrate small victories along the way. Regularly reviewing your finances allows you to make adjustments as needed and stay motivated to achieve your goals. By taking these steps, you can lay a solid foundation for financial success in the new year and beyond. Remember, the journey to financial well-being is ongoing, so stay committed and adapt your plan as circumstances evolve.

Walking into Wellness As the new year begins, many of us are eager to embrace healthier habits, and one of the simplest and most accessible ways to do so is by starting a walking routine. Walking is not only an excellent cardiovascular exercise but also a low-impact activity suitable for all fitness levels. Begin by setting realistic goals. If you’re new to walking, start with shorter durations and gradually increase as your stamina builds. Aim for at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week, as recommended by health experts. However, any amount of walking is better than none, so start where you feel comfortable.

Step into a Healthier You!

Choose comfortable footwear and weather-appropriate clothing to ensure a pleasant experience. Whether it’s a stroll in the neighborhood, a nature trail, or even a treadmill at the gym, find a setting that motivates you. Enlist a walking buddy to make the routine more enjoyable and provide mutual encouragement. Alternatively, listen to your favorite music, podcasts, or audiobooks to make the time pass quickly. Consider incorporating intervals into your routine, alternating between brisk walking and a more leisurely pace. This not only adds variety but also enhances calorie burning. Celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. Each step is a stride toward a healthier you. Reflect on the positive changes you observe in your mood, energy levels, and overall well-being. Embarking on a walking routine in the new year is a simple yet powerful commitment to your health. It’s a journey that begins with a single step and holds the promise of a more active, fulfilling lifestyle.

Go For More in 2024!

EMBRACE A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE IN THE NEW YEAR

Go for more rest! Go for more water! Go for more activity! Go for more fruits and veggies Go for more fresh, beyond-organic produce “Great!”, you think. These words are easy to write or say out loud, but much harder to do. What’s stopping you? Time, money, ability? Good health starts with good habits, like eating wholesome foods. Consuming more fresh fruits and vegetables is critically important to your health. And there’s nothing fresher than fruits and veggies you grow yourself! You might be saying to yourself, “Here is one more thing that is too hard to achieve. I don’t have space or ideal outdoor growing conditions for a traditional garden. I’m in an apartment. I live where it snows six months.”. For those facing challenges like limited outdoor space in apartments or prolonged snowy conditions, traditional gardening may seem impractical. Consider alternative approaches like container gardening or exploring local produce options. For those seeking innovative options, products like Juice Plus+ and the Tower Garden offer convenient alternatives. Juice Plus+ is raw plant powders that bridge the gap between what we eat and what our body actually needs. The Tower Garden offers a space-efficient way to grow fresh produce at home, using water, nutrients and air. Ultimately, the key is to find sustainable and feasible ways to incorporate these habits into your lifestyle. Rather than focusing on specific products or systems, put more emphasis on making informed choices that align with your circumstances and preferences. By adopting a holistic and realistic approach to health, you can make meaningful strides towards a healthier and more balanced life in the coming year. Go For More In 2024! Brenda Dixon, an Atlanta native, spent 20 years as a computer consultant before discovering Juice Plus+. This wellness revelation sparked transformative health choices, prompting her to bid farewell to the tech world. Now, Brenda passionately pursues what she considers to be her mission -- dedicating herself to guiding others towards healthier lives with genuine enthusiasm and unwavering commitment.

EVE N TS

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” -2 Corinthians 5:17

From Pennington’s Pen: The first church that I served as pastor had a huge lawn to cut. We owned a fleet of zero-turn lawn mowers, and our members would serve on cutting crews. The work was actually a lot of fun. Our members would run the lawnmowers in their highest gear as if they were go-carts. I will never forget when Jim busted into my office laughing at himself. “Pastor, I spent the last two hours cutting, and then I realized that I never dropped the blade!” This memory begs us to ask some soul-searching questions. Are you merely going through life’s motions, or are you engaging? Have you wondered why your marriage has lost some of its zest? Do your friendships feel a bit off? Are you bothered by the recurring thought that you don’t feel as close to your kids as you used to? These feelings aren’t bad things, for they let us know that something needs to change. Thankfully, when we take these concerns to Jesus, in God’s Word we find the answers that our hearts need most. The gospel saves us, and as it does, we discover it to be

the power of God that changes everything (Romans 1:16, 17). God grows us to become more loving and faithful to our spouses. We learn how to be giving and forgiving friends. And when we, as moms or dads, bring to the Lord our feelings of inadequacy, Jesus meets us where we are with gospel principles that empower our parenting. Has it been a while since you’ve dropped the blade? Join us at First Baptist Smyrna, where we are learning, growing, and engaging together.

Jeff Pennington – Senior Pastor, Smyrna First Baptist Church

WHAT MAKES YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT MUSIC?

Music is so very powerful. Music is therapeutic. It’s a force. Imagine exercising with no music to motivate you, driving in Atlanta traffic with no music to soothe you.

WHAT IS A BENEFIT OF MUSIC?

Music being a universal language… I was a member of an international orchestra comprised of highly skilled musicians from around the globe. Yet, we spoke one language and shared one voice when the conductor lifted his baton.

FAVORITE MEMORY RELATED TO YOUR MUSIC?

I regularly give performances at a senior living community. Seeing the joy my music brings is so fulfilling. I love when they make song requests. What’s even better is when they clap and sing along! These moments are priceless!

HOPES FOR THE ARTS IN SMYRNA?

I’m hopeful for greater accessibility of the arts for all residents.
