As a recent addition to the Smyrna community, I am excited to introduce myself to you. My name is Dr. Brandon Villar, and I am a DMD at Smyrna Family Dentistry. My wife and I are proud to have purchased the practice in February 2022, shortly after we tied the knot in January.
It is an absolute honor to be the new owners of a longstanding practice that has been serving the Smyrna community for over 68 years. We take great pride in seeing five generations of patients and hope to continue the tradition of excellence in familyfriendly dentistry.
My wife, Morgan, is currently pursuing her Masters of Divinity at Emory, and we are looking forward to starting a family soon. We are currently proud parents to five dogs, each with their own unique personality.

Today, I want to take a moment to celebrate and explore the fascinating world of style. The Smyrna Arts Council recently honored their 2023 Student Winners. Four gifted students artists, Emma Conlon, Lindsey Sanders, Ava Herrmann, and Lana Das were each awarded $1,000 unrestricted grants for their outstanding artistic achievements. The funds were generated through the 2022 Smyrna Art & Garden Tour, a collaboration between the Smyrna Arts Council and Keep Smyrna Beautiful. “My training in metalwork was an even balance between assisting artist blacksmiths and working in commercial fabrication and machining shops. I think this duality of traditional craft and commercial process really reflects me as a person: I am both the spirited artist that is pursuing my dreams, and the grounded entrepreneur.”

“I’m drawn to do metalwork in a way that’s inexplicable, even to myself. I sometimes wonder if my soul is mildly magnetic, and the iron pulls me towards it.”

“I was truly moved to see the descendants of those buried at Mount Zion Cemetery gather and sing “Amazing Grace” together in front of the decorative arch I built for their grounds. It’s something I will never forget.”

WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF YOUR WORK?:
“I retired after 30 years of teaching in 2019. When the pandemic hit, I was looking for a way to pass the time. A friend gave me a canvas and the journey began. I painted my first abstract and fell in love with the result. Collage design began when I trimmed paintings to mat. I put my trimmings together to create a collage. The combinations of color and shape brought me joy and I started creating more.”

“I love color and shape. When I look at my collages, I see something different every time. They are bright and joyful - it’s my way to bring happiness to others.”

“I have always been creative and drawn to the art world. When I was young, I felt the pull to create but couldn’t really determine what the right medium was for me. When I took a leave from my career after my dad passed away, I decided to try a pottery class. I was hooked immediately. I wanted to pursue 10,000 hours as soon as possible so that I could become proficient in the technical aspects and create new and unique items that felt true to my personal aesthetic and philosophy.”
“I love the permanence of it once it goes through a fairly involved and rigorous process. The uncertainty of what might happen in the kiln and the will of the clay can be happy outcomes or frustrating variations. I also really love the process. It has a very Zen feel to it when I’m at the wheel and joy when it comes out the way I want.”
“We are lucky to have Robert Harrison in our community. In addition to being a gifted metalwork artist, he is also willing to give his time and effort to advance the arts in Smyrna. He renovated the Old Smyrna Firehouse to not only be his home but also to be a place where people can gather for all types of events.”

“My love of fabric started when I was a teenager. Once I got to college, I knew instantly that I wanted to be a textile designer. Later, I started my own business custom screen printing and dying fabric yardage. I am back designing my own textiles again and I am working on launching a fabric and wallpaper line that will be digitally printed that will cater to the interior design trade.”

How can my child/teen mentally prepare for the transition back to school after summer break?
Sarah: Children biologically crave aspects of routine in their lives, so a great way to mentally prepare them for school can be through implementing a schedule! Of course, summer vacation should be about enjoying childhood, having fun, and decompressing, so the schedule should reflect just that!
Liz: Acknowledge that they likely have a lot of feelings about the new school year, which might include a combination of excitement and worry. As a parent, try to resist the urge to say “don’t worry about it!” or “it will all be fine!” and instead invite conversation about their worries and normalize that other kids probably have the same worries.
How can my child/teen manage feelings of anxiety or stress when returning to school?
Sarah: Validating the existence of anxiety and stress is key! Children and teens now face more academic and social pressures than ever before, and there is truly no way to understand just how much pressure they feel. Give your child/ teen a space to talk through their feelings, and work to support them through a combination of emotional comfort and problem solving skills, like coping strategies.
Liz: Rather than starting from scratch, look for previous moments of success. What is a challenging experience they have had in the past? How did they get through that challenge? What helped them? If they aren’t sure, it can be helpful to give suggestions of how you or others might cope: listen to music, draw, talk to a friend, talk to a trusted adult, take deep breaths, have some alone time, drink water, do something active like run or play.
How can my child/teen reconnect with classmates and make new friends after being away for an extended period?
Sarah: If your child/teen is worried about reconnecting with their peers, have them prepare things they want to talk about during their first adjustment period after summer! Maybe they want to ask about summer plans, talk about a trip they went on, offer a complement, etc.
Liz: Encourage your child or teen to keep an open mind. Remind them that they will continue to meet new people throughout their life and that building friendships takes time.
Trying new clubs or activities can be a great way to make new friends that have shared interests. It’s okay if it’s something they haven’t done before - everyone is a beginner at one point!
How can my child/teen effectively balance schoolwork with extracurricular activities and personal time?
Sarah: I always suggest that children and teens have this basic rule in scheduling. School week- Have extracurricular activities at least once during the school week, but no more than 3x per school night. This gives students time to work on an activity they are passionate about, focus on academics, be present in social relationships, and take care of themselves. Weekend- Try to aim for one weekend day be focused on self/family, and the other focused on social activities!
Liz: Your child might find it helpful to use a planner or agenda to create a schedule to see how much time is spent at school, completing school work, participating in sports or other extracurricular activities, hanging out with friends, or having personal time. When possible, include them in planning things that apply to the whole family.

Have you ever pieced together an outfit for a special event or placed a collection of items on a shelf and then stood back and found that the pieces you pulled together totally worked or completely did not work? I used to think that I either needed a whole lot of talent or a bit of luck when it came to styling something beautifully. Turns out, there is no talent or luck about it at all. It all starts with a math formula. This formula is known as The Golden Ratio of 1.618. Discovered in the ancient world by mathematicians, this pattern can be found all over in the world of nature. This ratio creates patterns that can be found on the spines of a pinecone, seeds on a sunflower head, spirals on seashells, even the human form, to name only a few. And our eyes love to see it. Why our eyes like this particular pattern may remain a mystery but how to achieve it is no mystery at all. Fashion designers, interior designers, architects, photographers and artists have all been using this formula for centuries in order to achieve visually appealing compositions. And so can you!
In interior styling, a vignette is a small, curated collection of objects grouped together to create a smaller picture within a larger space in a room. Chances are, at some point you’ve put together a vignette without knowing it was one. What makes the difference between a purposefully styled vignette and a cluttered collection is all in the composition. The composition is most appealing when this amazing Golden Ratio is applied.
To get started on styling a vignette, first decide on the space you’ll place it. It could be an empty shelf, bedside table, or coffee table. Next, collect a few of your very favorite things that could be styled there. These objects could be a few books, a vase with flowers, a candle, a small clock, a plant, a few apples, the list is endless. Now that you have your space and objects to style, it’s time to assemble your vignette.
In grid form, the Golden Ratio shows designers exactly where to place the most important objects in the composition for the greatest visual appeal. Known as Phi, this grid splits the space that you’re working with into thirds vertically and horizontally. To apply to your vignette, place the most important objects on the correlation grid lines. Even better, place on the points where the lines intersect. This will be more appealing to the eye than if the important objects are in the center of the frame or far to the sides.
In number form, the Golden Ratio helps us to know how many items to use when styling a vignette. This form is known as the Fibonacci Sequence (0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, etc.). The sequence grows as it adds together the prior two numbers to get a new number (for example, 3+5=8 and 5+8=13, etc) and repeats. Amazingly, all the numbers that you achieve by doing this are the exact same numbers of petals that are found on flowers. How amazing is that! To apply to styling a vignette, choose a number in the Fibonacci Sequence for the number of items you will use to style. Typically 3 or 5 objects work great for small vignettes.
The eye loves to see odd numbers. Odd numbers stop our brain from categorizing items into pairs which are less visually interesting. When styling a vignette, build a triangle shape of 3 points with the objects you are styling. To achieve this, vary the heights of objects to make a stepping down effect. If your items are of similar height then use books or a small object to lift one higher so that it appears taller than the others. To start, place the tallest piece in the back, medium piece in front and slightly to the side of the tall piece, then the smallest piece in front to create a stepping down effect. The Golden Triangle has angles of 72 and 36 degrees but any triangle here will do!

Avoid straight lines when styling a vignette. Three objects placed side by side is far less interesting than if they are slightly overlapped (literally or visually). Layer objects in order to give them a sense of belonging together, as random of a collection as they may be. Layering can also be achieved by mixing textures (woven basket, shiny glass and organic leaf).
Decide ahead of time if your vignette will be a mixture of items or a single themed collection. If you’re mixing (such as using a vase, a plant, and a candle) then make sure your objects all have a commonality either of color, texture or form. If you’re going with matched items (such as all white candles) then take extra care to use odd numbers and varying heights for visual interest.

The first church I served as pastor had a huge lawn to cut. We owned a fleet of zeroturn lawnmowers, and our members would serve on cutting crews. The work was actually a lot of fun. Our members would run the lawnmowers in their highest gear as if they were go-carts. I will never forget when Jim busted into my office laughing at himself. “Pastor, I spent the last two hours cutting, and then I realized that I never dropped the blade!”
This memory begs us to ask some soulsearching questions. Are you merely going through life’s motions, or are you engaging? Have you wondered why your marriage has lost some of its zest? Do your friendships feel a bit off? Are you bothered by the recurring thought that you don’t feel as close to your kids as you used to?
These feelings aren’t bad things, for they let us know that something needs to change. Thankfully, when we take these concerns to Jesus, in God’s Word we find the answers that our hearts need most. The gospel saves us, and as it does, we discover it to be the power
of God that changes everything (Romans 1:16, 17). God grows us to become more loving and faithful to our spouses. We learn how to be giving and forgiving friends. And when we, as moms or dads, bring to the Lord our feelings of inadequacy, Jesus meets us where we are with gospel principles that empower our parenting.
