Excellent in every way! The hygienists were so fun and engaging with my three busy kids. The dentists are so warm! Highly recommend.” Haven’t been to the dentist in longer than I care to admit and ran into Dr. Villar at Smyrna Market Village. It was divine intervention! Everyone here is fantastic. Very impressed by Dr. Villar and team with the level of expertise and care they provided.” Best dentist office I’ve ever been to! Everyone is so kind and personable.” I had a great experience at the Smyrna Family Dentistry. Dr. Villar is very thorough and takes time to explain what he’s seeing and doing.” Great visit as always at Smyrna Family Dentistry today. My family has been coming here for years and are always treated well.” Had not been to the dentist in a while! What a perfect dental office to get me back in the swing of things. The staff was very knowledgeable - set the expectations and one of the least stressful experiences I’ve had ever! Everyone was super nice and jovial! They were helpful with finding our insurance info!! I would definitely recommend!”

Letter from the Editor

April 2023 PUBLISHER

Burke Scott | burke.scott@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Sarah Cole | sarah.cole@citylifestyle.com

We live in an efficiency and productivity-obsessed age, and I admit - I fall into the trap sometimes too. The trap of believing the only things worth doing are the things that result in the highest level of control and least amount of uncertainty. But the truth is - that's really a sad and unfulfilling way to go through life. We have to leave room for exploring, for trying new places and things, for being a beginner, even for getting lost. It is those times that are unstructured and open-ended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered, and trust to be built. Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration, to prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life, to lose yourself on a trail in the Blue Ridge or in a book recommended by our local librarian, or to book that trip you’ve been thinking about, and to make time for the things that matter most to you that often come last on the calendar. If April showers bring May flowers, make time to play in the rain! Here’s your reminder to - and I say this with warmth in my heart - get lost! :) Happy April! COUNSELING & PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

MY FULL LIFE: A RECOVERY STORY BY JULIANNA ROBINSON, LCSW

During my own struggle with an eating disorder, my life might be described as a battlefield, one where I was at war with myself. While I am not proud of my struggle, it is not something to be ashamed of either. If you knew me many years ago, you would have been looking into the eyes of a basically lifeless girl who was so sick, tired, and heavy-hearted that I thought I could use my eating disorder to attain numbness and trudge through life with little to no emotion. In reality, I was tremendously afraid, lonely, angry, hurting, and miserable. Even though I felt as though I was controlling my food intake and the number on my scale, the eating disorder actually had control over me as I consistently found my weak body stuck in a hospital bed over and over again. My eating disorder was feeding me such lies that I couldn’t believe my doctor when she told me, “You’re walking on a very thin line between life and death.” In my eating disorder, life felt unbearable. Then I found that there was a mental health community that could help. And so, as I look back into the depths of my dysphoria, I worked with therapists, dietitians, and physicians who helped me find the keys to unlock the handcuffs of hopelessness. I was barely surviving. This time in my life was one where others literally had to save me from myself until I gained the tools and restoration that gave me strength to have a role in saving myself too. My treatment team helped me recognize that there was a life beyond my ED and my

ED did not have to be my identity. I had to decide to thoroughly trust my providers and lean into the “whys” as part of my recovery. I have learned that although my illness was not a choice, recovery is an attainable choice and fighting for a fulfilling life is a worthy choice. I began to live by small victories- bite by bite, meal by meal, day by day- until it became easier to repeat, and more natural to properly nourish my body. My ED diminished my body’s ability to fully experience emotions and life. I waited for the moments when I realized that joy is an emotional state that I was capable of experiencing again. I waited for the relief to come when I finally knew that I am lovable and loved. I waited for the heaviness to be lifted. With the help from my treatment teams along the way, the waiting was worth it and I chose to gradually build a life from which I didn’t feel the need to escape. Providers who fully understood my illness and who accepted me just the way that I was- broken and vulnerable and seeking help- navigated me beyond the lies of the ED. I started having compassion for that lifeless girl inside me and her body, and even compassion for the ED that was in its own way helping me survive trauma that I didn’t know how to cope with without the ED. Today I have regained health. Recovery has allowed me to fully experience life. It has given me energy and the ability to be present. It has allowed connections and relationships that would have been impossible when I was malnourished and giving the voice of my ED power over me. Pain is an inevitable part of being human, but now I am capable of coping with pain without turning to the ED. I learned my eating disorder was not a life sentence and I can live a life free from its bondage. It is an incredible honor to get to walk with clients every day as they, too, free themselves from their own bondage. The care I have received from mental health providers helped me off the ground and out of the muck. For them, I am forever grateful.

Reading is an adventure, and books can be your guide, expanding your knowledge and broadening your horizons. Enjoy these recommendations from Smyrna Librarian Mary Wallace Moore to inspire and guide exploration!

EXPLORERS AND EXPLORATIONS 1. The Plant Hunter: A Scientist’s Quest for Nature’s Next Medicines by Cassandra Leah Quave Traveling by canoe, ATV, mule, airboat, and on foot, Dr. Cassandra Quave has conducted field research from the flooded forests of the remote Amazon to isolated mountaintops in Albania and Kosovo—all in search of natural compounds, long-known to traditional healers, that could help save us all from the looming crisis of untreatable superbugs. Dr. Quave holds a joint appointment as Associate Professor of Dermatology in the Emory University School of Medicine and Emory Center for the Study of Human Health. 2. Bicycling with Butterflies: My 10,201-mile Journey Following the Monarch Migration by Sara Dykman Sara Dykman made history when she became the first person to bicycle alongside monarch butterflies on their storied annual migration--a round-trip adventure that included three countries and over 10,000 miles. Equally remarkable, she did it solo, on a bike cobbled together from used parts. Winner of the National Outdoor Book Award, this incredible travelogue details her remarkable journey. 3. Wanderlust: An Eccentric Explorer, An Epic Journey, a Lost Age by Reid Mitenbuler Peter Freuchen’s life seemed ripped from the pages of an adventure novel! A wildly eccentric Dane, his insatiable curiosity drove him from the twilight years of Arctic exploration to the Golden Age of Hollywood, and from the burgeoning field of climate research to the Danish underground during World War II. Through it all, he was guided by ideals remarkably ahead of his time, championing Indigenous communities, environmental stewardship, and starting conversations that continue today.

In decades past, adventure seekers have packed the SUV or camper with tents and gear for ‘roughin’ it’ in the great outdoors. But the swanky and exploding category of luxury outdoor hotel is something to investigate for an unforgettable, next-level experience. For those who prefer glamping rather than pitching their own tent fireside, here are a few options that incorporate sweeping views and a unique opportunity for travelers to be more authentically embedded in the landscape of the place they’re visiting. These resorts have bucket list-worthy rooms that capture the best of both the luxury resort experience and the outdoors. Whether you crave the dry heat of the remote Utah desert or the luminous beauty of the Northern Lights, we’ve curated a short list of some places you *must* check out.

Amangiri, Utah In southern Utah, Amangiri is a five star resort perfect for an adventurous weekend in the desert. However, it is the simple rooms built to emphasize the beauty of Canyon Point that truly make it an incredible place to stay. Each suite has an outdoor lounge and fireplace with private pools or rooftop terraces available too. Don’t miss a dip in the ‘gram-worthy pool, which wraps around the landscape’s curved dunes and arid plateaus.

Hacienda Na Xamena, Ibiza The Spanish island Ibiza boasts lush pine forests, hidden calas (cove beaches) and Hacienda Na Xamena, a resort suspended on a cliff 600 feet above the Mediterranean. Guests flock to its spa for the eight saltwater thalassotherapy (seawater as a form of therapy) lagoons, which are linked together with waterfalls. Swim to the edge of the pool and drink in the sweeping sea vistas.

Pacuare Lodge, Costa Rica This jungle hideaway is so out there, you have to whitewater raft down a river or ride a gondola to get there. A network of hanging bridges connect the villas, which have thatched roofs, plantation teak wood floors, rattan furniture and private plunge pools. In the evening, zip 400 feet down a cable for a meal at the Nest, a platform at the top of a ceiba tree, then take a night-time stroll along romantic pathways lit by candles and lanterns. “Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, he was buried, and he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.” -1 Corinthians 15:3,4

From Pennington’s Pen: At Smyrna First Baptist Church, the most important day on our calendar is Easter. This is the day that we, and Christians around the world, celebrate the most defining moment of human history. When Jesus was hung on across outside of Jerusalem, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. For three days, his dead, lifeless body was sealed in a tomb. But then, on Easter Sunday morning, God’s one and only Son came back to life! Did you know the Easter egg is a symbol of Jesus’ Resurrection? Just as Jesus rose

from the grave, the egg symbolizes new life emerging from the eggshell! At Smyrna First, our faith, hope, and love, are bound up in a firm belief in Jesus’ resurrection. I pray that this Easter, your heart will be filled with this joy too! I want to personally invite all of you to join us Easter weekend for the gatherings that will take place on our church campus.

Jeff Pennington – Senior Pastor, Smyrna First Baptist Church
