LIFESTYLE LETTER

Season's Greetings from the Editor Hello dear readers, The holidays have officially arrived, and with them comes that unmistakable sense of magic in the air. It's that time of year when we find ourselves reminiscing about what made the holidays so special during our youth. The traditions we create for our own families often echo the smells, sounds, sights, and festivities that made our childhood holidays so magical. Every year, right after we've polished off the Thanksgiving leftovers, my sons, Charlie and Henry, and I (accompanied by our four-legged family) load up our car and set off for a Christmas tree farm to pick out our perfect tree. We crank up the Christmas tunes, make pit stops for steaming hot cocoa, and truly savor this annual family tradition. And speaking of traditions, Smyrna's tree lighting has been a not-to-bemissed event on our calendar for as long as I can recall. Sometimes, the weather is mild and inviting; other times, it feels like we've been transported straight to the North Pole. But regardless of the temperature, our hearts are always warmed by the holiday spirit and the joy of sharing this festive event with our neighbors and friends. In this month's issue, we're all about embracing the enchantment of the season and showcasing what Smyrna Vinings offers to spread holiday cheer. We've gathered some pearls of wisdom from local gifting experts to make your holiday shopping a breeze. We're also excited to share some festive holiday entertainment options and opportunities for giving back in our area. Remember, while the holiday season can be a time of beauty and joy for many, it can also bring sadness and loneliness, especially for those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let's look out for those in our community who could use a helping hand or simply some company. My hope for you this season is that you are surrounded by love and peace, and that we all remember to care for one another with grace, empathy, and love. Wishing you a holiday season filled with warmth and wonder,

‘TIS THE SE A SON TO SHINE! IL LUMI N ATE YOUR HOL IDAYS WITH OUTDOOR LIG HTIN G

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTY MESIMER

The most wonderful time of the year is upon us, and it’s time for homeowners and businesses to embark on the quest to turn their outdoor spaces into a festive wonderland. Outdoor holiday lighting has evolved into an enduring tradition, and the array of trends and options available today is more extensive than Santa’s naughty and nice list. When it comes to outdoor holiday lighting, the secret to spreading that holiday cheer is understanding your unique needs. Whether you’re aiming for a subtle, elegant ambiance or a show-stopping display that could rival Clark Griswold’s, there’s a plethora of lighting solutions to suit your needs: Accent/Landscape Lighting: This choice is perfect for emphasizing architectural features, trees, and shrubbery, creating a soft and inviting glow that elevates your property’s aesthetic while providing additional security. Patio/Bistro Lighting: For a cozy and intimate atmosphere, consider patio and bistro lighting. String lights suspended over outdoor seating areas provide a warm and inviting illumination. Event Lighting: Hosting outdoor holiday events? String lights, lanterns, or fairy lights can create a captivating ambiance, setting the scene for a memorable celebration. Permanent Track Lighting: For a year-round lighting solution that adapts to every season and occasion, permanent track lighting is the ultimate choice. It allows you to change colors and themes to match the spirit of the moment. Advancements in technology have opened up new possibilities, from color-changing landscape lights to the dynamic features of permanent track lighting. Even for traditionalists, these technological innovations bring increased brightness and numerous creative options. In recent years, there’s been an explosion of extravagant lighting displays, captivating local crowds. Homeowners are utilizing their homes to showcase their holiday spirit, crafting spectacular shows that sometimes synchronize with music. These dazzling displays add an extra layer of enchantment to the holiday season. The installation process has been a deterrent for many when it comes to holiday lighting. However, with professional lighting experts available, extensive preparations and the need to be present during setup are concerns of the past. All that’s required is access to a power outlet, and professionals will ensure a safe, secure, and visually stunning installation. While warm white lights are a timeless choice, the options for creativity in color selection are boundless. Experiment with different color schemes that reflect your style and preferences. Consider alternating red and pure white lights for a candy cane effect or opting for Frozen-themed blue and cool white lights that can be enjoyed well beyond Christmas.

As the owner-operator at Blingle!, Christy Mesimer believes that the holidays are a time of joy and celebration. There’s something enchanting about the glow of Christmas lights. The season should be about enjoyment, not struggling with tangled lights or hunting for a stubborn

For those environmentally conscious, LED lights are the go-to option. They are energy-efficient, offer vibrant colors, and use less energy while having a longer lifespan than traditional incandescent bulbs. Adding a timer to your lighting setup can help control when the lights are on, reducing energy consumption and ensuring your display doesn’t light up the neighborhood all night long. Many holiday lighting companies, like the merry folks at Blingle!, do more than make homes sparkle; they also make a difference in their communities. Blingle! proudly partners with Make-A-Wish Georgia, bringing joy to children and families facing challenges. They’ve illuminated various special occasions, including quinceañeras, themed parties, and holiday decorations. It’s a heartwarming reminder of the true magic of the holiday season, which extends beyond the lights and decorations. Outdoor holiday lighting is a creative and heartwarming way to celebrate the festive season. This year, let your outdoor lighting tell your unique holiday story, and enjoy the magic of the holidays in all its splendor.

From twinkling rooftops to enchanting gardens, outdoor holiday lighting transforms your space into a festive wonderland. COUNSELING & PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

COPING WITH THE HOLIDAYS: NAVIGATING THE FESTIVE SEASON WITH EASE The holiday season is often depicted as a time of joy, happiness, and togetherness. However, for many individuals, it can also be a source of stress, anxiety, and emotional triggers. Whether it’s dealing with unrealistic expectations, juggling family dynamics, or grappling with loneliness, it’s important to develop coping strategies to navigate these challenges effectively. First and foremost, it is important to acknowledge and accept your feelings. If you are feeling sad, anxious, or lonely during the holidays, it is okay to feel that way. Allow yourself permission to process these emotions instead of suppressing them. This might involve spending some time alone or talking to a trusted friend or family member.

triggering, consider limiting the amount of time you spend with them or finding alternative ways to celebrate the holiday. This might involve hosting your own dinner with close friends or volunteering at a local charity event. Financial difficulties can also add stress during the holiday season. If your budget is limited, there are several ways to still enjoy the holidays without breaking the bank. Consider organizing a potluck-style meal where everyone contributes a dish or explore free community events and activities that celebrate the holiday spirit. Lastly, do not forget to practice self-care during this time. Take time to engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Coping with the holidays can be challenging. Remember, you are not alone in your struggles, and there is always support available to you.

If the holidays remind you of a painful event or the loss of a loved one, consider finding ways to honor their memory. Light a candle in their honor, visit their gravesite, or incorporate their favorite dish into your holiday meal. By acknowledging their absence, you can find solace in remembering the positive experiences you shared with them. If you are experiencing family conflict, it can be helpful to set boundaries and prioritize your well-being. If being in a certain family member’s presence is

UNWIND, INDULGE, AND DISCOVER THE ART OF PERFECT BLOWOUTS AT DRYBAR VININGS

H AIR CA R E | STY L E + BEAUTY

Drybar Vinings, the latest addition to the Drybar family, opened its doors in October, bringing the Drybar experience to the Vinings community. “We could not be more excited to open our first shop in Vinings Jubilee!” says owner-operator, Candice Mann. Candice and her husband, Sean Donnellan, relocated their family from Los Angeles last year to open seven new Drybars in the greater Atlanta area. “I was born and raised in the South and am so thrilled for our kids to grow up here.” When you step into Drybar, you’re greeted with more than just a friendly smile. You’ll receive a glass of champagne, listen to the best playlists, and even catch up on your favorite movies. Drybar’s philosophy is simple: Focus on one thing and be the best at it. “For us, that’s blowouts. No cuts. No color. Just blowouts. It’s the happiness and confidence that comes from the experience of visiting a Drybar,” says Candice. “But Drybar is bigger than blowouts. It’s the experience. In fact, the single most

important part of Drybar is the way we make people feel. We truly think about our service as an act of self-care, an opportunity to unwind and take some time for yourself.” This holiday season, Drybar Vinings has some exciting promotions. For those looking to give the gift of great hair, you can “Gift One, Get One” by purchasing a $100 Drybar gift card and receiving an extra $20 card for yourself. Throughout the holiday season, you can expect some delightful surprises and in-shop giveaways to make your Drybar experience even more enjoyable. “We have some really fun holiday gift sets perfect for gifting,” Candice says, “And if you aren’t familiar with our hair products, they smell amazing-so many great gift options here!” With party season approaching, Drybar has a range of services to help you achieve that perfect “holiday party hair.” Start with a consultation with your stylist, where you can choose from eight signature styles, each with its unique charm. Whether you prefer the classic elegance of the Old Fashioned, the chic city-inspired Manhattan, or the carefree waves of The Cosmo and The Mai-Tai, Drybar has a style that suits your holiday gatherings. For those busy days when you don’t have much time between work and holiday events, Drybar offers dry styling services to quickly refresh your look. And if it’s a family gathering, Drybar has a Shirley Temple blowout service for girls aged 7 and under. You can also pamper yourself with additional services like a 10-minute scalp massage or a deep conditioning hair mask to nourish your hair and relax your mind. In addition to making clients feel special, Drybar is also dedicated to providing a

rewarding workplace for its stylists. The brand offers various career growth opportunities, from becoming educators to advancing into management roles. Drybar believes in fostering a mutually beneficial relationship with its stylists. “One of our core values at Drybar is ‘We Are Family,’” says Candice. “We are truly a team working together…that’s the Drybar magic.” To keep your holiday look fresh and fabulous between appointments, Drybar offers a range of hair care products and accessories. The Drybar Detox line, including dry shampoo, is ideal for extending the life of your blowout. You can also find products like The Sheriff Medium Hold Hairspray or Moneymaker Flexible Hold Hairspray to maintain your style. For finishing touches, products like Sparkling Soda Shine Mist and Final Call Frizz and Static Mist can help tame flyaways and fight frizz. There are even travel-sized products that are perfect for your purse when you’re on the go from one party to another. This holiday season, let Drybar Vinings enhance your holiday look and elevate your confidence. It’s not just about looking great; it’s about feeling fantastic. Mastering the Art of Thoughtful Holiday Gifting

E XPERT ADVICE AND TIPS F O R H E A R T F E LT G I V I N G THIS SEASON

ARTICLE BY STACEY SCOTT The holiday season is fast approaching, and it’s that time of year when the spirit of giving takes center stage. To help you become a gifting pro, here’s some expert advice on thoughtful holiday gifting from Byrne Coles and Ashley Trindle of Marshmallow Dream Monograms and Gifts, a charming shop that specializes in personalized gifts and more. Their expertise in the art of personalization, through embroidery and vinyl customization, has made them a go-to destination for meaningful and unique gifts for all ages and genders. One of the most beautiful aspects of holiday gifting is the opportunity to show your loved ones how much you care. Personalization adds an extra layer of thoughtfulness to any gift. Consider the recipient’s interests, hobbies, and preferences when choosing a personalized gift. This attention to detail lets them know that you’ve put time and effort into selecting a meaningful present. Before embarking on your gift-giving journey, it’s essential to determine your budget. Knowing your price point will help you narrow down your options and prevent overspending. Keep in mind that thoughtful, personalized gifts don’t have to break the bank. There are plenty of budget-friendly options available. Finding the perfect gift for men can be a challenge, but it’s not impossible. Consider items like personalized duffel bags, garment bags, and dop kits. You can also opt for practical, everyday items like insulated tumblers or coffee mugs. If the man in your life has a favorite hobby, look for personalized gifts related to that interest, such as golf accessories or grilling tools.

When attending holiday gatherings, it’s thoughtful to bring a hostess gift. Versatile and classy options include wine totes, personalized for a personal touch. Pair these with accessories like wine stems or cocktail coasters, whether they’re personalized or feature a seasonal motif. This combination is sure to make your host or hostess feel appreciated. Celebrating the arrival of a new baby or supporting new parents is a wonderful part of the holiday season. Look for gifts that provide comfort and joy, such as cozy blankets, baby jackets, and personalized “lovies.” Practical items like bibs, burp cloths, and hooded towels also make fantastic gifts for little ones. If you decide to go the extra mile with personalized gifts, be mindful of the time required for customization. Many custom gift services recommend allowing 2-5 days for personalization. However, during peak holiday seasons, it’s wise to plan ahead and allow 10-14 days to ensure that your gifts are ready on time. For those looking to simplify the gift-giving process, many stores, such as Marshmallow Dream, offer gift-wrapping services, often including festive gift bags, tissue paper, and ribbons. This can save you time and add an extra touch of elegance to your presents. If you’re looking to spread holiday cheer without stretching your wallet too thin, consider the following budget-friendly gift ideas: • Personalized hand towels with seasonal motifs. • Cozy throws in a variety of price ranges. • Cosmetic bags, which are always a hit. • Robes for all ages, a popular choice during the holiday season. Remember, the essence of holiday gifting lies in the thought and care you put into selecting each gift. Whether you choose personalized items, practical gifts, or budget-friendly options, the most important thing is to show your loved ones that you care and appreciate them during this special time of year. Happy gifting!

“Personalization adds an extra layer of thoughtfulness to any gift, showing that you’ve put time and effort into selecting a meaningful present.” Visit Byrne and Ashley at Marshmallow Dream Monograms & Gifts: 3988 Atlanta Rd SE #108, Smyrna, GA 30080 (770) 405-8777 Website: marshmallowdream.com Instagram: @marshmallowdream_monogram

BOSLEY’S PLACE: A HAVEN FOR NEONATAL PUPPIES In a world filled with heartwarming rescue stories, Bosley’s Place stands out for its dedication to helping tiny, vulnerable creatures: neonatal puppies. Founded by Jennifer Siegel in 2014, this unique organization has dedicated its mission to saving the lives of orphaned and homeless neonatal and underage puppies. Their story began with a little furball named Bosley, a 1.2lb pitbull puppy found in a trash heap in Grant Park, Atlanta, facing a grim fate until Jennifer stepped in to foster him. Bosley’s journey transformed Jennifer’s life, leading her to create a sanctuary for these fragile souls. The decision to focus primarily on neonatal puppies at Bosley’s Place stemmed from realizing the stark 15% survival rate for orphaned puppies due to limited resources. With unwavering dedication, they increased the survival rate to an impressive 87%, standing out as a leader in this niche area of rescue. The services offered at Bosley’s Place are a testament to their commitment. Newborn orphaned puppies, entirely reliant on care, receive round-the-clock attention. Feeding every 2 to 3 hours, temperature-controlled habitats, assistance for bodily functions, and specialized medical care are the norm. The facility boasts a neonatal puppy ICU equipped to care for a spectrum of cases, from healthy newborns to those with critical medical conditions or congenital defects. What sets Bosley’s Place apart from other rescues across the United States is its singular dedication to neonatal orphaned puppies. This exclusive focus enables them to save numerous young lives that might have otherwise been lost. Numerous heartwarming success stories have marked the organization’s journey. From the bleak beginnings of abandonment or tragedy, these tales evolve into narratives of hope and joy when these once-helpless puppies find their forever families. Over the years, Bosley’s Place has faced its share of challenges. Initially, obtaining medical advice for newborns was difficult and medications specifically designed for newborn puppies were scarce. Through dedication and collaboration with veterinarian Dr. Shannon Ewing at Collier Animal Hospital, they conquered these obstacles. Current challenges center on the necessity for additional resources, such as fosters, volunteers, and donations. The organization encourages community involvement through adoption, fostering, volunteering, and donations. They also host engaging events like offsite corporate puppy parties, puppy yoga, and puppy-inclusive events at their Smyrna facility. Looking ahead, the long-term vision and goals of Bosley’s Place are simple yet profound: to continue saving the lives of these vulnerable puppies. Their steadfast dedication ensures these neonatal puppies have a brighter future, continuously serving as a beacon of hope for the most fragile members of the animal kingdom. BREAKING BARRIERS: CUMBERLAND COUNSELING CENTERS PIONEERING MENTAL HEALTH ACCESS Mental health issues are on the rise, and Cumberland Counseling Centers (CCC), spearheaded by Alexandra Thompson, LCSW, is on a mission to revolutionize mental health care accessibility. Their vision centers around the belief high-quality mental health services should be accessible to everyone, regardless of financial limitations. As a non-profit, they’ve partnered with local churches and faith-based organizations, paving the way for universal access to quality mental health care. CCC’s service portfolio is diverse, offering clinical mental health therapy and faith-based counseling. They swiftly establish operational mental health centers within partner churches or faith-based organizations in 3-4 weeks. These partnerships go beyond therapy, including workshops, support groups, and professional development sessions on faith and mental health. They also provide scholarships for individuals from lower-income backgrounds, awarding $45,000 in counseling scholarships last year, with plans to double that amount this year, showcasing their commitment to inclusive care. The services cater to a wide demographic, including individuals, teenagers, couples, and families grappling with various mental health challenges. From trauma and grief to anxiety and relational challenges, CCC provides comprehensive support, aiming to foster healing and growth at both individual and community levels. What sets them apart is their unique approach to partnership with churches and faith organizations. Instead of operating as a separate “referral source,” they integrate seamlessly as a sister partnership within the walls of the organization. By taking charge of the business and liability aspects of therapy, they offer unparalleled support to the existing staff and community. Real-life success stories emphasize CCC’s impactful work. Testimonies reveal life-changing experiences and gratitude for the tools, support, and financial accessibility offered. CCC’s faith-based approach fosters personal growth and enhances individuals’ spiritual well-being. Community support is vital for the center’s success, particularly in aiding underserved clients. Financial contributions and community involvement play a critical role in ensuring these individuals receive necessary assistance. CCC plans to broaden their impact by establishing more partnership sites, increasing scholarships, and enhancing community engagement through education programs. Their goal is to normalize mental health care in faith-based communities for holistic well-being. To engage, support, or access their services, individuals can contact them via their website, email, or phone, or follow them on social media. Cumberland Counseling Centers is more than a mental health provider; it’s a force for community-driven change, fostering healing and mental wellness through innovative partnerships and dedicated service. By promoting various paths to recovery and community engagement, the DDF fosters an inclusive, multifaceted approach to rehabilitation. The foundation’s initiatives like COPE House, Zoned 4 Re-Entry, Zoned for Youth in Recovery, CCAR, Mental Health First Aid, and the Friday Night Lights campaign have significantly influenced individuals and communities. EMPOWERING YOUTH: FOUR CORNERS GROUP’S JOURNEY TO TRANSFORM LIVES Four Corners Group stands as a guiding force for youth navigating turbulent paths, striving to curb the tide of juvenile recidivism and dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline. Founded on the mission of decreasing recidivism rates and empowering underserved adolescents, the organization is committed to redefining the trajectories of young lives. Mindful of the urgent need to assist historically underserved youth, the group focuses on various vulnerable demographics, including students in Title I schools, dropouts, those in alternative education, and individuals recently released from juvenile detention or involved in the juvenile court system. Four Corners Group addresses not only symptoms but also systemic issues contributing to these youths’ challenges. Through a diverse set of programs, the organization provides education, support, and empowerment. The Pathways to Success initiative, a pivotal program, focuses on imparting life skills, character development, and public speaking, facilitated by trained coaches and mentors. The commitment to these individuals doesn’t cease after program completion; the Boss Up Program offers continuous opportunities, emphasizing entrepreneurship and personalized success coaching for program alumni. Understanding that prevention is paramount, Four Corners Group embraces a personalized approach, offering a continuum of care that equips youth with tools and positive influences to steer them away from the grip of recidivism. This support extends to intervention efforts, including court support and mentorship, bridging the gap for students navigating legal entanglements. President and founder, William Johnson shares that the heart of the organization lies in restoring hope and opportunities. Recognizing the need for mental health support, the group has partnered with experts to introduce mental health services, emphasizing skills-based programs for participants. This holistic approach endeavors to address the complexities and traumas that many of these young individuals face. The impact of Four Corners Group is evident through success stories of students transitioning back to public schools, gaining employment, and improving essential life skills. Statistical assessments indicate substantial growth in both external and internal assets, marking a positive shift in the lives of the youth they support. Four Corners Group envisions an expansive future, aiming to extend their programs and support services to reach more students across multiple campuses. Their objective is not only to assist individual youths but also to contribute to a network that strengthens the entire community by empowering the next generation. Crucial to their mission’s success is the involvement and support of individuals and businesses. Through donations, volunteering, and raising awareness, the organization encourages community involvement in this transformative journey, nurturing the potential of every young participant. Four Corners Group stands as a testament to the profound impact an organization can have on the lives of at-risk youth. Sometimes, a lifelong dream and a desire to do good converge. And that fusion can create something truly special: like Glenn’s Café, now open in Mableton Walk at 5015 Floyd Road. Co-owners Jason and Patricia Walesh wanted to own a restaurant, and they also wanted to find a way to include Jason’s younger brother, Glenn Hutchinson, who has Down syndrome, in a meaningful and quality way. So, they combined their hospitality experience, creativity, and commitment to inclusion to open Glenn’s Café. The restaurant’s namesake is the heart of the establishment and serves as Guest Relations Specialist. Guests can expect to be greeted with warm smiles, thumbs ups, and sincere kindness while enjoying an eclectic but uncomplicated menu. Glenn’s Café specializes in well-considered food in a fast-casual environment. This bright and vibrant restaurant features colorful murals and whimsical art, serving breakfast and lunch with dine-in or takeout options.

Raise Your With the holiday season fast approaching, it’s the perfect time to start planning your festive celebrations. To help you get into the holiday spirit, we present two delightful cocktails crafted by Liz Faison, the lead bartender at Eleanor’s in Smyrna, a charming speakeasy bar. These cocktails, named “Home Alone?” and “Home Alone, Too?” are perfect for your at-home bar setup and cater to various taste preferences.

The Home Alone? The Home Alone? is a rich, boozy, and warm cocktail, reminiscent of a delightful encounter between apple cider and a Manhattan. To make it, you’ll need:

I N G R E D IE N T S • • • • • • •

Herradura Reposado Campari Averna Lemons (or fresh lemon juice) Sugar in the Raw Cinnamon sticks Oranges

INF USED T EQUIL A PREPA R AT ION: 1. Peel a whole orange and place the peels in a sealable container with your Herradura Reposado (a liter-sized bottle). 2. Add four cinnamon sticks to the container. 3. Let it rest for two days, then strain the infused tequila. You can rebottle it for easy use.

COCK TA IL PREPA R AT ION: 1. In a mixing glass, combine 1.5 ounces of your infused tequila, 0.75 ounces of Campari, and 0.5 ounces of Averna. 2. TWO EXCLUSIVE COCKTAILS FROM ELEANOR’S FOR YOUR HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS

The Home Alone, Too? The Home Alone, Too? offers a lighter, more refreshing option for those who prefer subtler flavors. You’ll need:

INGREDIENTS • Herradura Reposado (infused as per the previous recipe) • Fresh lemon juice • Demerara syrup (made with Sugar in the Raw)

COCK TA IL PREPA R AT ION: 1. In a shaker (or a lidded mason jar if you lack a traditional shaker), combine 2 ounces of your infused tequila, 1 ounce of fresh lemon juice, and 1 ounce of demerara syrup. 2. Shake until the mixture is very cold, then strain into a martini glass. 3. Garnish with a lemon wheel. This light and subtly festive cocktail pairs excellently with a charcuterie board, making it an ideal choice for your holiday gatherings.

Eleanor’s, the speakeasy bar where these delightful cocktails were crafted, is a hidden gem known for its warm ambiance and rich history. Since 2012, Eleanor’s has been tucked away behind the cooler door at Muss & Turner’s, paying tribute to Eleanor Seale, an extraordinary woman whose warmth, care, and love for great food and drinks have left a profound impact on the establishment. Eleanor’s is a place where friends come together to enjoy delicious libations and share laughter. The bar is a tribute to her influence, and these holiday cocktails are a way to say, “Thank you and we love you” to the woman who has played a vital role in shaping the Muss & Turner’s family. This holiday season, raise your glass and enjoy these festive cocktails that capture the spirit of the season. Cheers!

Giving Campaign

2023 44

G IV IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE

This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”

EVE N TS

“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. ” - Romans 5:8

From Pennington’s Pen: What do you think of when you consider Christmas? For me, Christmas means wrapped gifts under a bright tree, happy smiles at a family dinner, dazzling lights and an explosion of decorations. But underlying all of these traditions, what if there’s something more, some reason for all the joy and excitement surrounding December 25th? One of the most common Christmas carols is “Joy to the World” by Isaac Watts. Its lyrics describe the unspeakable joy of Christ’s coming. Although this song is traditionally sung at Christmas, when we celebrate Christ’s birth, the carol is actually a description of Jesus’ second coming, when he will return to remake the world as our King. Christmas wouldn’t be a time for celebration unless there was a future hope. We can find joy in Christ’s first coming to earth because of the promise he made when he took on the death that we deserved then rose from the dead, defeating death forever, so that those who believe in Him might have eternal life under

the rule of His second coming. Because of this promise of life everlasting, His first coming means everything to the believer. Because of this promise, Christ’s coming to earth means that we can experience eternal joy and peace. So, next time I decorate our family’s Christmas tree or wrap a gift for a friend, I can have an even greater joy, knowing that the Christmas we celebrate is made all the sweeter through gratitude for Christ’s sacrifice and excitement for His return.

Take Another Little Piece of Her Heart

cBrayer ila M e Sh

Sheila Art

FOR SHELIA MCBRAYER, THE JOY OF CREATING IS MEETING THE PEOPLE IT BRINGS HER WAY

Whether you’ve met her in the 37 years she’s been the Membership Secretary and Receptionist at Smyrna First United Methodist Church, or you’ve visited her booth at the Smyrna Handmade Market, if you know Shelia McBrayer, you love her. For the past three seasons, Shelia’s been a staple of the Smyrna Handmade Market, sitting behind her tables of abstract art with sunglasses and a big smile. “I love meeting people. I love to talk. I like to hear people’s stories. I like to hear the comments of what they see in my art, because everybody sees something different.” In 2019, Shelia’s friend and market companion Maxine Kirkland took her to a class on alcohol inks, and “I finally found what I was meant to do. I enjoy it, it relaxes me. And it’s like I say on the back of my card, every piece I make, there’s a piece of my heart in it.” That heart is filled with family. She’ll celebrate 53 years of marriage to husband Murphy (“Mac”) this month. She is close to her only son, Brian, and her sister Peggy lives a mile away. But her family is also the babies at church who blow her kisses, her fellow vendors who start each Sunday giving her a hug, and all the people who engage with her art. Shelia and her art will be at the Smyrna Handmade Holiday Market, December 1-3.
