Welcome to September, and Welcome to Style!
With school and home activities in full swing, including schedules, games, homework, and business planning, we also cherish the memories of our own school days and how quickly summer flew by. Hopefully, we can enjoy some leisurely last trips to the pool and the outdoors as we prepare for fall.
For me, September was always a great time of year, as it was my grandmother’s birth month, and we were very close. She was a creative lady whose style was expressed through her art, with watercolor being her medium of choice. She enjoyed experimenting with silversmithing alongside a close friend and always sought new ways to incorporate various types of art paper into her creations. Style, in my opinion, is in the eye of the creator. With that being said, we welcome you to the 2024 Style issue!

Henrico Schools Secure Federal Grant for Environmental Bus
Henrico County Public Schools have recently secured a federal grant to acquire a new electric school bus, which will be converted into a mobile classroom for environmental education. Dubbed the "Green Wheels for Bright Minds Ecobus," the bus will offer hands-on environmental learning experiences to students from underserved communities. NEUROTOXIN (WRINKLE RELAXER)
Various neurotoxins, including Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau, Xeomin, and Daaxify, are utilized to reduce wrinkles resulting from facial muscle activity. A small amount of liquid is used to stop the nerves from telling the muscles to move. The results become noticeable within two to seven days after the treatment, and the effects usually last for ten weeks to six months, depending on the specific product used and individual response.
FILLERS (REPLACE LOST VOLUME)
Fillers are gels made from an artificial version of hyaluronic acid that occurs naturally in the body. They fill facial lines and add volume to areas like the tear trough, cheeks, temporal regions, and lips. Fillers are effective for visible lines on the face even when the muscles are at rest. After applying a numbing cream, the skin is cleansed, and filler is administered to the desired area. Recovery is quick, with minor bruising usually going away within a week. The effects of this treatment typically last for about a year to eighteen months, and some of the volume often remains even longer.
SCULPTRA (COLLAGEN-BUILDING BIOSTIMULATOR)
Sculptra is a treatment that can help your skin look plumper and more youthful. It’s an injectable made with poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) that encourages your body to produce more collagen, a protein that keeps your skin firm and smooth. This treatment can be used in different areas of the face to add volume and reduce wrinkles, except for under the eyes, in the lips, or around the lips. While the initial fullness from the treatment will decrease as your body absorbs the liquid portion, the PLLA will keep working to create new collagen over time. Research shows that Sculptra can keep building new collagen for over two years. The number of treatments you might need depends on your age, how much volume you’ve lost, and your specific goals.
KYBELLA (FAT MELTER)
Kybella is an FDA-approved treatment specifically designed to reduce the appearance of a double chin. A substance is administered under the chin, and over the course of a few weeks, the body naturally eliminates the treated fat. It’s typically recommended to undergo four treatments, each spaced six weeks apart for optimal results. It’s important to note that the treatment permanently removes fat cells, which means that the results are long-lasting. Maintaining a stable weight is essential to ensure the treatment’s lasting effects.
BROAD BAND LIGHT (BBL) AND INTENSE PULSED LIGHT (IPL)
Broad Band Light (BBL) and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments can help even your skin tone by targeting redness, broken blood vessels, and brown age spots. This treatment is often called a “lunchtime laser” because of minimal downtime. You may see results after just one session, but multiple sessions will produce optimal results. These treatments may not be suitable for people with darker skin or melasma. Protecting your skin from the sun with sunscreen is important to maintain the results. You may need to repeat the treatment to keep your skin looking its best.

MICRONEEDLING
Are you looking to improve your skin’s texture and reduce the appearance of fine lines and scars? Microneedling could be the answer. These treatments stimulate your skin’s natural healing process by creating small, controlled micro-damage and boosting collagen and elastin production. One session may produce a subtle glow, but The VEI Aesthetic Center uses the FDA-approved SkinPen brand microneedling device. Multiple sessions are recommended for longer-lasting results and to target specific concerns like scarring.
ABLATIVE LASER RESURFACING
By eliminating damaged skin layers, Ablative Laser Resurfacing with either erbium or CO2 lasers can significantly improve wrinkles, scars, and age spots. The lasers gently eliminate the damaged skin, allowing new collagen to form and promoting the growth of smoother, healthier skin as it heals. Full-field ablative lasers treat the entire skin surface for the most noticeable results, while fractionated lasers manage tiny skin sections, reducing recovery time. The effects are long-lasting, but new wrinkles and age spots may appear over time because of the natural aging process.
HYBRID LASERS
The Sciton HALO laser is a special kind of laser treatment that helps improve the look and feel of your skin. It can make your skin clearer and smoother and reduce fine lines and scars. The therapy involves simultaneously using two different kinds of laser energy to target your skin’s surface and deeper layers. Most people see results after just one or two treatments, and sometimes it’s combined with BBL therapy for even better results. UPPER EYELID SURGERY
Upper eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is suitable for individuals who feel their eyelids look heavy or tired, which may impact vision. BROW/FOREHEAD LIFTING
Brow or forehead lifting is a procedure to return low-hanging or puffy eyebrows to their natural position without raising them too high. Surgeons can treat above the eyebrow, at the hairline, or even through the eyelid skin. This outpatient procedure can also improve forehead wrinkles, with most healing occurring within the first week. Results are long-lasting, but forehead descent may continue as we age. I spent a while searching for a good plastic surgeon and finally found Dr. Lynam. WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO UNDERGO THIS PROCEDURE?
After having a child, my body changed, and I gained a significant amount of weight. I was able to lose almost 100 pounds and maintain that loss for a couple of years; however, I eventually decided to undergo plastic surgery. I had worked so hard to shed the weight, and I wanted my body to reflect the effort I had put in and to feel more confident in my own skin.

Lauren was always responsive and never made me feel like my inquiries were a bother.

Lauren took the time to thoroughly educate me about what to expect before and after surgery. This made me feel completely prepared for my procedures. Despite feeling nervous, Lauren and Dr. Lynam continuously reassured me and alleviated my fears. I have had friends who had plastic surgeries without knowing what to do before or after, and they were not fully prepared or informed. That wasn’t the experience I wanted, and thankfully, it wasn’t the experience I had! Before my surgery, Dr. Lynam visited me, which renewed my confidence in him and my decision to have surgery.
HOW HAS THE MOMMY MAKEOVER POSITIVELY IMPACTED YOUR LIFE?
I don’t know if words could ever explain it. I loved my body before, but I am so fully in love with it now and everything it is capable of. My hard work in the gym is visible now; my clothes fit better, I can wear a string bikini and feel so confident! That confidence has affected every area of my life, honestly.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IF SOMEONE ASKED YOU ABOUT GETTING A MOMMY MAKEOVER AT RICHMOND SURGICAL ARTS?
I would encourage them to go for it! I’ve already recommended it to many people. The entire experience, from the consultation to the post-surgery check-ups, was amazing. I’ve healed beautifully and I want everyone to have the same incredible experience that I had!
WERE THERE ANY ASPECTS OF YOUR PROCEDURE AND EXPERIENCE AT RICHMOND SURGICAL ARTS THAT SURPRISED YOU?
During my post-op journey, I was provided with two garments, which may seem small, but most surgeons do not do that. It was one less thing I had to worry about! My check-ups after surgery were frequent, whereas most surgeons don’t see their patients for a while. It was calming and reassuring to know that everything was going smoothly and according to plan. They were able to address any concerns I had immediately. Dr. Lynam even called me the evening after my surgery to check on me! I am now four months post-op and just had another check-up, and everything has healed beautifully.

Meet Anaya, an enthusiastic Australian Shepherd. Anaya is a super smart girl who loves learning new tricks and playing doggie puzzles for her food. Her favorite activity is catching frisbees with impressive athleticism and dedication. She also enjoys playing fetch with a tennis ball. Anaya’s joy of playing frisbee and fetch is contagious.
Despite her high energy, Anaya loves to relax with belly rubs and foot massages. She’s a true “mama’s girl.” Her sweetest side emerges when she’s around her family’s foster kittens.
