Summer’s here, the pool’s open, and the weather is FINE!
As we prepare for vacations, day trips, and weekends relaxing and working in our yards, let’s take a minute to count the many blessings and wonderful relationships that we have both near and far. As we look back, let’s take a moment to appreciate the men in our lives, the grandfathers, fathers, brothers, friends, and mentors who have shaped us, encouraged us, and inspired us to work hard, protect, and provide. My grandfather was such a man. He was an example of loving patience, sacrifice, hard work, fun, and creativity. I miss him.
Speaking of men, we’ve got an amazing issue full of some pretty special guys who make our community come alive in their professional and personal endeavors. From outdoor furniture restoration and incredible outdoor lighting to financial planning, business coaching, and health and wellness, we hope you’ll sit back, grab that favorite drink, and savor the stories of these gentlemen that make our lives richer each day.
Enjoy life. Love your chosen family hard. Don’t waste any moments to take a chance, be bold, and live your dreams.
Happy Father’s Day!

Joanna TannenbaumJoanna Tannenbaum has a Master’s Degree in English and Creative Writing from Southern New Hampshire University and a Bachelor’s Degree in English and Professional Writing from New York Institute of Technology. She currently works as the editor for Midlothian Lifestyle and Short Pump City Lifestyle magazines. She was born and raised on Long Island, NY, and relocated to Chesterfield County eleven years ago with her husband Brian. They have two daughters, Avery and Addison, and two beagles, Molly and Finn. Joanna enjoys reading, writing, kickboxing, listening to music, watching movies, and spending time with her family.
In honor of our Gentlemen's issue, Short Pump City Lifestyle got the chance to chat with Dr. Joseph Jones of Richmond Virginia Orthodontics. When discussing his chosen field with Short Pump City Lifestyle, Dr. Jones says, "Orthodontics is a fascinating intersection of medicine, science, technology, and biomechanics. It also allows you to use your hands to create something beautiful while helping others." He explained that orthodontic treatment goals are a healthy smile and a healthy bite, making daily tasks like biting, chewing, and speaking much simpler when teeth are aligned, preventing future wear or chipping as you age. So, what inspired Dr. Jones to take the orthodontic path? His brother.
After witnessing his brother's cleft lip and palate treatment, Dr. Jones became enamored by the power of orthodontics and its ability to change how a person eats, smiles, and speaks. After high school, he attended the University of Georgia, near his hometown of Ila. Dr. Jones received his Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from the University of Georgia and his Doctorate in Dental Medicine and orthodontic specialist training from the Medical College of Georgia. After graduation, he practiced in Georgia before moving to Richmond in the fall of 2021 to be closer to his family, who had relocated there. Soon after, Dr. Jones joined Richmond Virginia Orthodontics because he loved the culture of providing compassionate orthodontic care in a laid-back and patient-focused atmosphere.
“We absolutely love RVO and Dr. Jones! Great experience, friendly and knowledgeable staff. Very organized from beginning to end with my daughter’s expander and braces.”
- Kimberly Haberlin
Richmond Virginia Orthodontics, or RVO as most call it, is a top Invisalign provider nationwide. Dr. Jones, his colleagues, and the office staff treat their patients like family and will do everything possible to ensure they feel comfortable and at home. Designed with the patient in mind, RVO offers the latest orthodontic technology to provide the
best treatment and experience possible. Their office also has unique elements to make patient visits more comfortable. Amenities like a video and game room, complimentary Starbucks Charity Cafe, and wireless internet for working parents or patients are all efforts that will help their visit be refreshing and enjoyable.
In addition to first-rate patient care, Dr. Jones and RVO love to give back to their local community. Each quarter, they pick a charity and give 100% of their Starbucks Charity Cafe donations to that cause. While the drinks at the cafe are free of charge, the donations make a significant difference. "We are dedicated to encouraging community involvement and increasing awareness of important local charities, one cup at a time," Dr. Jones says. "We love to support all and any local charities we can." When Dr. Jones isn't Dr. Jones, the orthodontics connoisseur, he is an active, fun-loving outdoorsman. He enjoys bike riding, hiking, playing soccer, and exploring his family farm with his partner and three kids.

Gallery5 is Richmond's community-driven visual and performing arts center that supports a more diverse, inclusive, and inspired region of art enthusiasts. A former firehouse, the historic Jackson Ward venue spotlights state-of-the-art, modern art exhibitions ranging from themed solo and group performances to international notables, Richmond favorites, and budding artists whose creations warrant more exposure in the local community. Gallery5 uses artistic talents to boost positive social and economic change and awareness through annual fundraisers, exhibitions, and exclusive marketing campaigns.
In April, Prabir Mehta, a musician and board chair for Gallery5, played his swan song for the last time as he retired from the nonprofit after 16 years of service. Mehta played a crucial role in upholding Gallery5 during the COVID-19 pandemic. A week later, the award-winning venue invited Short Pump City Lifestyle to its 18th-anniversary extravaganza. The celebration marked the 18 years Gallery5 has been organizing events for the Richmond community. The commemorative evening was successful with art by Eliza Jane Prints, Say-10 Records, and Angry Black Gxrl Art and the rhythmic sounds of Josh Small and Andrew Alli, Deau Eyes, Holy River, Sweet Potatoes, and IONNA.

This Summer, explore which surgical options could be right for you. Dr. Gregory T. Lynam is Richmond’s only double board-certified plastic and maxillofacial surgeon and offers a wide variety of cosmetic surgery options for face and body. Some of the most popular procedures today include breast augmentation, tummy tucks, and facelifts. Breast augmentation can include getting implants, replacing old implants,
or even just a breast lift without implants. We work with many different implant manufacturers to give you a huge variety of shapes and sizes. Tummy tucks, or abdominoplasty, involve removing excess skin and fat, while repairing deeper muscle layers that may have been stretched from weight gain and/or child birth. You can even combine these procedures into one surgery—the Mommy Makeover
If you have been considering cosmetic surgery, call today for a consultation to meet Dr. Lynam and talk about what your options are!
Steve Perkins had a great job with a Fortune 500 company surrounded by benefits and opportunities. Despite that, like so many of us, he felt stuck and uncertain about where he fits in his career. The problem was Steve couldn’t figure out what he was good at or enjoyed doing, let alone how to translate that into a job. With a mechanical engineering degree and experience in the field, Steve created a process to find the ideal career path. “I started testing it out, and it worked for myself
and some friends, too,” Steve says. “So, I kept refining it over the next few years as I began coaching people in their careers, and eventually became certified as a Professional Leadership Coach when I saw how much more effective coaching is than other approaches to growth and development.” Steve named his process the Greenhouse Method and set out to innovate a new way for more people to benefit from coaching and the Greenhouse Method.
The Greenhouse Method started as an app and eventually became an online membership community based on a simple three-step coaching process: find it, change it, and grow it. Steve's exclusive coaching method leaves discouraged clients satisfied in life and work. It's based on the idea that understanding your Career Sweetspot is the seed that leads to a more fulfilling career and impactful life. It applies to individuals feeling stuck and teams sensing the need to level up their leadership. "Many of us
have great intentions but are stuck not taking action because we don't know where to start, and we feel overwhelmed," Steve says. "Finding your Career Sweetspot is the key to getting unstuck, and the structure of coaching brings it to life in a custom-fit way to you, gets you over the hump, and is the only tool custom-fit to you." Steve encourages those trying to level up at work or seeking more purpose to check out Greenhouse Coaching services.
Greenhouse'r, Joe, described his experience: I heard about the Career Sweetspot workshop at Greenhouse Coaching and had no idea what to expect, but I decided to join. During that workshop, I began to see how all these things I loved and was good at started to fit together. Three-and-ahalf years later, I am still refining my career sweetspot, but I wake up almost every day stoked that I get to do something that makes me feel fully alive.
Sessions can be scheduled monthly or bi-weekly, depending on membership level. With various topics from finding that Career Sweetspot, landing the ideal job, starting a dream business, growing as a people leader, getting organized and focused on productivity, overcoming burnout, and growing in confidence, people can choose one-on-one coaching, autonomous digital courses, or coaching and workshops for a team at work. People often select Greenhouse Coaching over similar services because they are refreshingly real and easy to talk to.
To reach a wider audience, Steve started a podcast, Career Sweetspot, to provide tips and sensible steps regarding work, leadership, and life. "Most of us are operating at a fraction of what we're capable of, but the growth and leadership content out there is so heavy, academic, or impractical," Steve explains, "I wanted something more realistic, so Career Sweetspot was created as a fun and energetic conversation about leadership, life, and business." Career Sweetspot is relatable and entertaining while providing advice and ideas that truly work. Along with Greenhouse's Head of Coaching, Sundie Marquardt, Steve's top goal is to help listeners clarify their sweet spot, figure out their next steps, grow in leadership, and stay focused on what matters. “Really, at the end of the day, I just want people to live more fully and experience the career clarity and fulfillment we and the people we work with have experienced,” Steve says.

Matt Bricker, the owner of Coastal Patio Furniture, has been involved in charities since he was a young child in the Boy Scouts. As a father now, Matt makes it a point to set a good example for his children and always teaches them to give back. “I have learned to practice gratitude for every little thing in life, which has helped me continue contributing to others,” Matt says. “My wife and I are raising our children around giving back to others in need or less fortunate, whether it be clothes, toys, or food.” Just last summer, Coastal Patio Furniture organized a fundraising event where they auctioned off beautifully restored furniture, donating all the funds to Healing TREE, a non-profit organization specializing in mental health awareness.
This time, Matt wanted to contribute to the City of Richmond, a place he loves and formerly worked for. On a warm April day, the Coastal Patio Furniture team loaded a moving truck with approximately

“We hope this donation will benefit the recipient, which is the City of Richmond Parks and Recreation. They currently do not have any outdoor furniture around their community swimming pools, and we would love to provide areas to sit and relax for the incredible citizens of Richmond.” -
$20,000 of lightly used patio furniture and delivered it to Blackwell Community Center in Richmond to set up around their pool. Jerrod Booker, the Recreation Services Supervisor for the City of Richmond Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities, was in place to receive the donation.
The furniture Matt gave to the Blackwell Community Center came from a generous customer who recently bought new furniture from Coastal Patio Furniture. “We have made it our mission to donate every item of used furniture we get from our customers when they order new,” Matt says. “This way, they don’t have to worry about disposing of the furniture, and we can give it to organizations that need it while preventing old yet useable furniture from winding up in a landfill.” All of Matt’s customers are familiar with his goal to donate their former furniture, and they are just as happy to contribute to the cause.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, an astonishing twelve million tons of useable furniture is wasted annually. “All of us on earth are trying to limit excess and extend the life of our possessions,” Matt says. “Coastal Patio Furniture is contributing to the longevity of outdoor furniture by restoring or rehoming it.” Matt’s team of professionals maintains and revives patio equipment to its former glory at a fraction of the price it costs to replace. The mission of Coastal Patio Furniture is a good reminder that repairing and restoring high-end furniture is an affordable alternative to purchasing an expensive new set.

Jonathan Dally’s passion in life was always football. After a full-ride scholarship to pursue Division I football in California, he played professionally for five seasons in Europe. While in Vienna ten years ago, Jonathan met his future-wife Laura and moved to Richmond after the season ended. After many triumphant seasons coaching college-level football in North Carolina, he decided to establish roots when he bought a home in the Richmond area, just south of Short Pump. It was only fitting that Jonathan
continued coaching and found himself at Freeman High School for three seasons. He decided to become an independent insurance broker when the pandemic arrived in 2020, bringing uncertainty to the workforce. “I’ve put all of my energy into my relationships: with my wife, our three children, and those who allow me the opportunity to protect the ones they love most,” Jonathan says. “Since 2022, I've had my own agency, and I couldn’t have imagined a more perfect beginning to the next chapter of life.”
ARTICLE BY JOANNA TANNENBAUM | PHOTOGRAPHY BY NIA NEGRETTE PHOTOGRAPHYJONATHAN DALLY AND HIS TEAM HELP CLIENTS PROTECT WHAT MATTERS MOST TO THEM
Although initially hesitant about his next chapter, Jonathan, now an Advanced Markets Specialist, was inspired by the genuine relationships he built with clients and colleagues. He ultimately decided that being the best representative for families to create their legacy was the route he wanted to follow. "People don't know what they don't know," Jonathan explains. "There are a lot of financial professionals that put themselves before doing what's best for their clients." However, Jonathan expresses, "We value the people and their vision. If we can't show them how to guarantee that vision, nobody can—and we'll tell them." The Dally Group offers education for every client's needs, from simple term plans to detailed strategies. They help those who are retired, or planning to retire, by showing them various ways to protect their life savings from running out and, in numerous cases, massive growth. "We're not selling insurance," Jonathan says. "We're building clarity in a murky industry."
One of The Dally Group's biggest challenges is the need for inquiring minds in specific age groups.
"The 20 and 30-year-olds don't make it a priority while it's still affordable, and the 60 and 70-year-olds feel like they're too late to the party," Jonathan explains. "Those in the middle will spend too much time thinking about it because, in this economy, they're forced to pinch pennies." He believes there is always time to open the conversation, and The Dally Group is more than happy to do the research for them.
"I advise finding a trusted advisor and holding the conversation with an open mind and flexible expectations," Jonathan says. "The information is free, and you'll be surprised how easy it
can be to solidify your legacy." To achieve this, Jonathan recommends always asking a friend or family member to who they consult their finances to find a trustworthy broker.
Jonathan enjoys solving his clients' puzzles to help solidify their financial futures. He recognizes it is not always about how much money a person can make; it is more about how much money they can NOT lose. His days revolve around enlightening families on leveraging life insurance to build wealth and secure their retirement with contractual guarantees. This information is the same information financial advisors withhold from sharing because they profit from their clients' money.
"I'm hoping to change the conversation so my clients feel that I come from a place of concerned competence," Jonathan says. "Some of the best conversations we have are when we tell a client that we won't get them what they want because it's not ethical." With the clients' best options always in mind, The Dally Group’s mission is to explore and narrow down the best team for the job.
The Dally Group offers Mortgage Protection, Final Expense, Term Life Insurance, Universal Life Insurance, Disability Insurance, Critical Illness Insurance, Retirement Protection, and SmartStart Insurance. To book an appointment with a trusted advisor, go to: thedallygroup.com
"I came into the conversation with my guard up, ready to ‘close the door’ on the insurance guy. I was surprised when the sales pressure left the room. I got worked up for nothing, and Jonathan was a breath of fresh air.”- J. Ruiz
“If we can build lasting relationships on a foundation of integrity and transparency, everybody wins.”
- Jonathan Dally
Outdoor Lighting Perspectives in Richmond Helps Create the Perfect Summer Space with Illuminating Lights
PHOTOGRAPHY BY
OUTDOOR LIGHTING PERSPECTIVESSummer is finally here, and now is the time to tidy up our yards and prepare for drinks and dinner on the patio. Along with flowers, plants, and garden embellishments, outdoor and landscape lighting are the finest ways to achieve the perfect summer hangout. Midlothian Lifestyle conversed with Richard Popio, the owner of Outdoor Lighting Perspectives in Richmond, to learn about his story and get an inside look at some of this summer's most desired outdoor lighting.
JOANNA: PLEASE TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND.
RICHARD: I was born and raised in Youngstown, Ohio, and attended Youngstown State University, where I graduated with a degree in Business Management. In 1993, I started working in the wireless industry and dedicated 20 years to the telecom enterprise.
JOANNA: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURCHASE OUTDOOR LIGHTING PERSPECTIVES?
RICHARD: After I retired, I started searching for my next endeavor. With no desire to return to the corporate grind, I searched for a small business to pursue. Ironically, I was a client of Outdoor Lighting Perspectives when I heard that the previous owner was selling. We talked, and before I knew it, I became the new owner of the Richmond franchise.
JOANNA: WHAT ARE SOME OUTDOOR LIGHTING TRENDS THIS SUMMER?
RICHARD : The most significant summer trend is backyard lighting. From up-lighting trees to show the width and depth of the property to bistro strings lights and tiki torches around a pool deck, Outdoor Lighting Perspectives helps extend the time folks can spend outdoors with friends and family. Wall washers, under-cap lighting, and color-changing lights are also summer favorites.
JOANNA: DOES OUTDOOR LIGHTING PERSPECTIVES HAVE ANY UNIQUE OUTDOOR LIGHTING?
RICHARD: Yes! The Bonsai color series is an exclusive product line by Outdoor Lighting Perspectives. It allows our clients the flexibility to change their lighting based on the holiday, season, or special events.
JOANNA: WHAT MAKES OUTDOOR LIGHTING PERSPECTIVES DIFFERENT THAN SIMILAR BUSINESSES?
RICHARD: We differ from competitors because our lighting systems are designed to last a lifetime. We have our own manufacturer, which allows us to control quality and durability and create custom lighting for all of our clients. We have superb attention to detail and always strive for client satisfaction.
JOANNA: DESCRIBE THE PROCESS OF HELPING CUSTOMERS SELECT THE RIGHT OUTDOOR LIGHTING.
RICHARD: Our process is simple, yet we pay attention to what our clients want. We meet our clients on-site, face to face, ask them questions, and then provide a lighting design based on their needs. Once the plan is approved and accepted, we install the lighting within two weeks, generally in one day.
JOANNA: IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE?
R ICHARD: At Outdoor Lighting Perspectives, all our technicians are certified Low Voltage Technicians and have been with us for quite some time; we are all committed to providing an outstanding client experience and creating the perfect outdoor living space for our clients.
JOANNA: DO YOU HAVE ANY UPCOMING DEALS OR EVENTS FOR THE SUMMER?
RICHARD: Our summer special includes a complimentary light with a minimum purchase.
