What a wonderful season of the year May brings to us! Flowers, freshly-grown grass, and baby leaves on our trees. Along with the sound of lawnmowers humming in our neighborhoods, we feel the warmer temperatures that haven’t yet brought the intense humidity of the South. We can indulge all our senses in nature as we walk, run, hike, ride our bikes, and get away with family and friends. For me, May is all about new beginnings. I graduated from college in May, took a cross-country tour, and lived on the West Coast for a summer starting in May, and the list goes on. I’ll admit that the weather in RVA is my favorite part of May, and the fact that pools are opening and the summer vibe is on its way makes this water baby happy! What’s your favorite May memory? Please share it with us!
Speaking of family, the ladies in our lives deserve so much love and attention as Mother’s Day approaches and every day of the year. We dedicate this issue to the ladies and all that they are and do for themselves, their families, and their chosen communities.
This first Ladies’ issue for Short Pump is packed with powerful women doing amazing things in RVA. Dive in and experience a legacy of love and fashion, transformation with surgical arts, top-notch age-in-place care, and a dedicated mother who’s also an incredible advocate as a lawyer! These women will inspire you to rise in your gifts and dreams and take action to bring growth and change to yourself and those around you. Each of you is a gem of inestimable value, and you deserve it!
Please enjoy this beautiful season, and know we are so excited to share these fantastic partnerships for you to experience. We hope you always have the mindset that the best is yet to come, so seize each day and live in the present- there’s no better way!
Happy Mother’s Day!

Are you looking to make your skin clean, refreshed, and glowing after the cold winter months? That’s precisely what you will get with the new Obagi Skintrinsiq facial at Richmond Surgical Arts! Building on Obagi’s scientifically-backed research and knowledge of the skin, the Skintrinsiq system delivers a soothing, spa-like facial treatment with multipurpose benefits. When he was young, Brannon Howle witnessed the incredible care his mom and dad gave to his grandmother, and he soon realized just how valuable family and compassionate people were. Later inspired by the nurses in his life, his mom, sister, and wife, Brannon decided to shift his career and focus on caring for the elderly, opening ameriCARE in Richmond. “There is a growing need in our community to help an aging population, and I have always wanted to play a role in helping others and building a strong community,” Brannon explains. “This organization allows me the opportunity to offer compassion to those in need and enable a growing staff that is committed to helping
others in a trusting and loving way.” With his mom Patty Howle beside him as the Administrator and Care Director, the mother-son duo is on a mission to deliver exceptional care to those in need to help make a positive impact on the community.
Patty loves to talk to people and make them smile. Couple that with twenty-six years of nursing, and she's the perfect person to ensure the best quality of care with a personalized and positive experience at ameriCARE. After her hospital tenure, Patty volunteered at Crossover Ministries, a charity that supports the healthcare needs of those who cannot afford it. "This experience provided valuable lessons to me in service and compassion as I worked alongside many talented physicians and others to better the community of Richmond and provide for the less fortunate," Patty says. Today, she applies her nursing
knowledge and experience to her role at ameriCARE and loves to make a difference in people's lives.
Brannon and Patty work hard to learn as much as possible about their clients. They meet with families to discuss their needs, schedules, and hobbies, using this information to match their clients with the best caregiver. From simple personal care and companionship to more complex situations like hospital stays and post-operative care, Brannon and Patty strive to connect the perfect caregiver to the client. “When customers choose ameriCARE, they get direct access to the owner and administrator,” Brannon says. "We work with them to ensure we provide the highest quality of service and make them happy with the compassionate care they are receiving.”

This Spring, explore which surgical options could be right for you. Dr. Gregory T. Lynam is Richmond’s only double board-certified plastic and maxillofacial surgeon and offers a wide variety of cosmetic surgery options for face and body. Some of the most popular procedures today include breast augmentation, tummy tucks, and facelifts. Breast augmentation can include getting implants, replacing old implants,
or even just a breast lift without implants. We work with many different implant manufacturers to give you a huge variety of shapes and sizes. Tummy tucks, or abdominoplasty, involve removing excess skin and fat, while repairing deeper muscle layers that may have been stretched from weight gain and/or child birth. You can even combine these procedures into one surgery—the Mommy Makeover
If you have been considering cosmetic surgery, call today for a consultation to meet Dr. Lynam and talk about what your options are!
Sisters Honor their Grandmother by Opening a Women’s Boutique in Her Namesake
Short Pump City Lifestyle got to chat with Lauren Llewellyn and Katelyn Peretti, co-owners of Erma Jean, a women's apparel, shoes, and accessories store in Short Pump. Recently commemorating its first anniversary, Erma Jean is sister-owned and named after Lauren and Katelyn's stylist grandmother, Erma Jean, who always knew how to make other women feel confident in their clothing. The sisters decided to build their family business by honoring the past and creating a legacy for future generations. "With a desire to help today's women feel the same and an interest in fashion, we leaned into the idea that a modern boutique could adopt the simple dress-shop mindset centered on building sophisticated wardrobes and making personal connections,” Lauren says.

In 2019, the duo launched Erma Jean online and expanded to a storefront by 2022. The boutique offers a curated selection of items. "We deliberately select timeless silhouettes and statement pieces that complement different shapes, sizes, and ages," Lauren says. "The core of our products is versatile and comfortable styles for many seasons in a woman's life." From fashionable and fun girls' night out outfits to refined styles for the office, Erma Jean carries a good mix of items to help women build a versatile wardrobe. Lauren and Katelyn are excited to share that they recently added a limited collection of apparel and accessories for little girls and an assortment of home and beauty products.
When it comes down to business, Katelyn knows their customers well and can find and evaluate products based on style, fit, color, price, and quality. Lauren brings her marketing experience to Erma Jean, staying focused on promoting new products and events, managing campaigns,
and understanding sales trends. As a family-operated business, it's only fitting that their mother, Kim Peretti, plays a prominent role at Erma Jean. Kim manages their books, maintains a clean and organized appearance, ensures products meet their standard of quality, restocks items, and checks out customers.
Lauren and Katelyn are proud of their shop's location, situated among other small businesses that cater to women, like a salon, a med spa and wax center, and popular coffee and gift shops. With their grandmother's values and essence set at the forefront, the sisters thrive on connecting with local community members to assist with their fashion needs. Lauren and Katelyn welcome you to stop in Erma Jean at the Shoppes at WestGate in Short Pump, 11741 West Broad Street, Richmond, Virginia 23120.

“We inherited an entrepreneurial spirit, a value for craftsmanship, an interest in fashion, and a desire to support women as our grandmother did.”
- Lauren Llewellyn
“It’s not often that I can find a boutique that’s fashion-forward and fits my budget, but Erma Jean does just that! There’s something for every occasion and season, and the help and service from the owners can’t be beat!” - Betsy S.
“Loved my styling time with Lauren and Katelyn! They were friendly, listened to what I liked and didn’t like, and put different outfits together! They made a style-lacking mama turn into a confident outfit-wearing woman! I am not shopping anywhere else!” - Becky E.
“Erma Jean is always my first go-to shop for quality, stylish, and affordable pieces. I can trust their brand for style and fashion, and I’ve depended on their personal style sessions to help me pick pieces that will work for me and my body type.” - Melissa W.

Courtroom dramas on television inspired a young Miriam Airington-Fisher to become a lawyer. She loved the idea of standing up for other people. At the beginning of her career, Miriam worked as a legal aid attorney and public defender, then progressed to a small firm. Even though she enjoyed the work, as a new mother, it was highly demanding to be in court daily while working nights and weekends to keep up. "When my daughter was born, I knew I couldn't keep going at that pace, but I still wanted to practice law, and I also needed to earn a living," Miriam explains. "I decided to open my own practice. I didn't have all the answers, but I figured that I could make it work if I was in the driver's seat." Like any working parent struggling to navigate childcare, sick days, and daycare closings while still having to
work, Miriam found the flexibility in her entrepreneurship to jump around those hurdles.
Miriam wanted to prove professional achievement is possible without sacrificing balance. With technological tools like online portals, live phone support, virtual meetings, and virtual support staff, Miriam is confident that businesses can still provide excellent service without being tethered to their phones and emails. She built her practice, Airington Law, into a sustainable firm by hiring support and creating processes to complete work efficiently and profitably. "We are all very dedicated to our clients and the work we do, but I do not promote a culture of workaholism, which is very prevalent in the legal field," Miriam says. "We all have families and personal lives. Some of our team members are parents and have specific schedule needs, which we work to accommodate in a way that is fair to the rest of the firm."
Airington Law is proud to be a women-led law firm that combines quality representation with
Besides running a successful law firm and publishing a book, Miriam manages a website, Mom’s A Lawyer, a digital community of resources for lawyer moms. She shares tips and support for lawyer moms interested in entrepreneurship through blog posts, videos, and a monthly newsletter. To learn more, visit momsalawyer.com .
a family-friendly culture. "We have an amazing team of truly passionate and dedicated legal professionals, and we help hundreds of clients each year," Miriam says. "We also have a respectful and family-friendly firm culture, and I can continue to do the work I love and have meaningful time with my kids." Miriam decided to share her journey, hoping it might inspire other women lawyers to choose entrepreneurship. In January 2023, she published a book titled Mom's a Lawyer: How to Start a Firm and Take Control of Your Life as a guide for working mothers who wish to leave traditional legal jobs for legal entrepreneurship. Notably, the book became an Amazon bestseller in the first week. Miriam is hoping to reach out and encourage more working moms to run their own businesses, so they can promote positive changes within their professions.
