Let’s Explore, Short Pump! Spring is here, and the showers are blossoming bright flowers! While there’s spring cleaning and sprucing up to do, there’s always time to explore and have an adventure. I loved traveling to see my cousins in South Carolina as a kid. I lived in the Midwest, so seeing them was a hike. During my visits in the warmer months, we would spend a week in the mountains of Virginia at our grandparents’ cabin they named “Windsong.” Their cabin was indeed a place of magic that always allowed us all to explore. Between the hills, wildflowers, rocks, bugs, animal life, and the mountain air filling our lungs with sweet-smelling flowers, this was a sacred spot, and we all knew it. Of course, each visit included dining at Shatley Springs, a fantastic family-style restaurant in Crumpler, NC, serving fried chicken with biscuits and mashed potatoes with heaven-onearth gravy. To this day, I prefer the mountains, hiking, and enjoying temperatures below 73 degrees. Welcome to the 2023 Explore Issue! What a lineup this month! This year we are so excited to feature great local businesses that help us get out there and explore. From local event venues and staycation destinations to discovering science and health, this issue will motivate you to venture out and explore our fantastic community. As always, we’re so grateful to partner with families and businesses and help you grow to your fullest potential. Weekend Getaway LOCAL RESIDENTS ENJOY A STAYCATION WITH LUXURIES FROM MERCEDES-BENZ OF MIDLOTHIAN AND QUIRK HOTEL IN RICHMOND

Midlothian Lifestyle and Short Pump City Lifestyle partner Paul Hearn of Dog Training Elite Richmond and his wife Shanon recently experienced a weekend getaway just minutes from their home. To make their experience more luxurious, they borrowed a GLB SUV from our partners at Mercedes-Benz of Midlothian. From their positive experience with the friendly staff and versatile vehicle at Mercedes-Benz to a memorable stay at the Quirk Hotel in downtown Richmond, the Hearns shared their journey with us. On a chilly February afternoon, the Hearns arrived at Mercedes-Benz to borrow a Mercedes-Benz GLB SUV. The couple was pleased with the hassle-free, ten-minute pick-up process from the pleasant and eager-to-assist staff. The team explained how to use the SUV's various features and what to expect while driving the vehicle. The Hearns had an easy, quick,

and informative experience from entering Mercedes-Benz at pick-up to driving away from the lot. They left feeling confident in Mercedes-Benz to get them to their destination safely. Paul was very impressed with the compact yet lavish Mercedes-Benz GLB SUV. The Hearns could store their belongings in the trunk with plenty of extra space. “The car was very high tech, with great touchscreens that were easy to see, as well as many functions at your fingertips,” Paul says. He adds that the comfortable and heated seats were perfect for the cold and rainy day. The car also provided an eye-pleasing ride with changeable ambient lighting to suit any mood. Well-furnished and finely finished, the SUV allowed the Hearns to make the best of a rainy day. The Hearns arrived at the Quirk Hotel and noticed the building’s gorgeous Italian Renaissance architecture. Inside, the atmosphere was fun, quirky, and hip! Paul and Shannon were equally impressed by the room they stayed in too. “It was

spacious, minimally decorated, but still trendy and satisfying,” Paul says. “The ‘quirky’ theme continues into the room, and you find yourself smiling for no reason!” The Hearns were particularly smitten with the Q Rooftop bar and captivated by the fantastic 360-degree view of the city. During their visit, Q Rooftop was closed for the season but scheduled to reopen on April 1st. According to the Hearns, Quirk’s food was also quite enjoyable. “It was upscale enough to offer unique dishes but not too exotic for Paul, who has a little simpler palate,” Shanon says. For dinner, Paul ordered Sausage Ragu, and Shanon had Cod. Everything was delicious and well-enjoyed with a refreshing glass of Prosecco. Providing a solid start to the following day, they indulged in the tastiest coffee, while Paul raved about the Bourbon French Toast and Shanon had a delectable breakfast sandwich! The Hearns appreciated how close the hotel was to theaters and downtown activities. Paul and Shanon, huge animal lovers, were also thrilled to learn that the Quirk is a pet-friendly establishment.

“The hotel is awesome. It has a trendy atmosphere, yet it is calming at the same time. It is truly an enjoyable place to hang out, and it has all the things you need to e n j o y y o u r s t a y.” – P a u l H e a r n At the close of their escapade, Paul and Shanon recognized how accommodating the Quirk staff was throughout their stay. “They seemed like they were there to serve you and never made you feel like you were a bother,” Paul says. “Whenever we had a question or need, they jumped right on it and took care of it immediately. We were very impressed!” Paul and Shanon plan on returning to the Quirk, furry friends in tow, to experience Q Rooftop in the warmer weather. On their drive back home, the Hearns, once again, experienced a peaceful ride in the SUV. Rested, recharged, and ready for the workweek, Paul and Shanon

returned to Mercedes-Benz to drop off the car. “Since it was Sunday, we simply parked it near the service entrance and dropped the keys in the drop box,” Paul explains. “Super easy!” Thanks to the personable and knowledgeable staff at Mercedes-Benz and their seamless car ride, the Hearns had an exceptional experience. The Science Museum of Virginia is more than just a home to fascinating exhibits and programs spun around the world's historical, scientific, cultural, and artistic objects. It is a neoclassical building rich in Virginia history. Long before it was a museum, it was Broad Street Station. This passenger rail station saw thousands of travelers a day pass through Richmond starting in 1919. After decades of being a traveling hub, Broad Street Station transitioned into a new phase, becoming a ground-breaking STEM center when the Science Museum of Virginia opened in January 1977. In February, Midlothian Lifestyle and Short Pump City Lifestyle received an exclusive tour of the museum and a sneak peek of its newest exhibition, Playing With Light. With Communications and Curiosity Director Jennifer Guild as a guide, magazine staff experienced a day of learning, inspiration, and fun. “The Science Museum isn’t going to teach guests everything they need to know about science,” Jennifer explains. “There’s too much! But we will share some ways science is connected to your daily life in unexpected ways.” With fourteen exhibitions, dozens of stand-alone exhibits, plus demos and programs guided by educators, facilitators, astronomers, and volunteers, guests will undoubtedly walk away with newfound knowledge. The Playing With Light exhibition explores the world through various STEM disciplines, including physics, technology, material science, biology, engineering, and astronomy. With twenty-one full-body interactive exhibits, the exhibition offers guests the chance to sneak past a laser light security block, step inside a giant kaleidoscope, draw with infrared paint, freeze their shadow, make a laser beam bounce across the water, and build a powerful telescope. Playing With Light offers exploration, creativity, and learning through experimentation, a fundamental scientific process. The exhibition is included with admission and is open now until August 20, 2023. According to Jennifer, the most popular exhibition at the museum is Speed. Highly interactive elements such as the sprint track, a pitching cage, and an air hockey robot have been calibrated to display accurate speed measurements. The exhibit presents a natural Moon rock, an SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance plane, and the slowest machine ever built. “It’s not just about what’s displayed,” Jennifer explains. “Guests appreciate the way the STEM information is presented in the Speed exhibition because it’s not all science theories

and formulas. The content is about what people care about—food, animals, sports, weather—and is presented in an unexpected way.” One of the most intriguing aspects of the museum is The Forge. Part workshop, part gallery, the Forge celebrates innovation, design, and fabrication. The innovators gallery features Virginia-made products like a Girl Scout cookies box; aluminum foil; ChapStick; a heat and puncture-resistant HybridSil glove; blotting paper used in offices; a Hamilton Beach drink mixer with an AC/DC motor; a cider can showcasing the stay-on tab, and Robitussin, the overthe-counter cough medicine. Each of these inventions illustrates the power of STEM. The Forge's workshop allows guests to be creators using traditional tools and state-of-the-art technologies like CNC routers, 3D printers, laser cutters, and more. Managed by highly skilled educators, The Dome is another incredible museum feature. The Dome allows guests to explore space through a quarter-acre wraparound screen, high-tech projectors, and a robust sound system. Jennifer says, "There is no place in Virginia better to delve into the cosmos than in The Dome." With that thought in mind, it's unfortunate not everyone can visit the museum, but the organization does not let that stop them from fulfilling its mission of reaching all Virginians. Through free content, like videos, graphics, STEM at Home activities, and blogs, anyone with internet access can experience what the Science Museum of Virginia offers. “We love a good song remix, pop culture remake, puns, and costumes,” says Jennifer. “It's clear from our content that staff will do just about anything to entertain and inspire Virginians.” Every exhibition at the museum operates on a different schedule. Some are open for three, six, and twelve months, and some are permanent. “Having numerous spaces to house exhibitions and a dynamic schedule allows us to rotate the content in a way where there is something new to experience and explore,” Jennifer says.
