Welcome to November, Short Pump! It’s nearly time for Thanksgiving, and the holidays are chasing us down. The colors of Fall are almost gone, being replaced with reds, greens, and of course, silver and gold. Do I hear holiday music playing in various stores around town? Nah, it’s too early, right? Personally, I love the break in humidity and that I can see my breath some mornings. This season also reminds me of my cousins and the many holiday meals where we laughed until we couldn’t breathe. We certainly have a lot for which to be grateful. Welcome to your first Thankful Issue, Short Pump! Our focus for you this month begins with nonprofits and businesses in your own backyards that love to give and serve others with excellence. While helping our veterans and troops, mentoring families while encouraging healthy relationships, and giving business owners and nonprofits the tools needed to help enhance our community, these organizations continue to model gratitude and a heart for giving. Building something we can be proud of and share with others is the core of Short Pump’s history. We know the pride and joy behind that legacy is important to share with future generations. Sandston Library to Reopen Soon After Refresh Sandston Branch Library is expected to reopen at the end of the year following a temporary closure for interior upgrades. The refresh, which began in September, will provide more than $327,000 in upgrades and will include accessible A-frame shelving, carpeting, and paint. New audio-video equipment will be installed in the meeting spaces and common area. Environmentally friendly plantings will be added to the grounds. Sandston Library is the longest-serving location of the Henrico County Public Library.

Henrico Firefighters Train on Homes Slated for Demolition Firefighters from the Henrico County Division of Fire recently had the opportunity to train on 30 vacant homes that were slated for demolition in the Libbie Mill area. This hands-on experience provided the chance to strengthen and refine their skills in a safe learning environment. Practice applications included forcible entry through exterior doors, cutting holes in roofs, performing home searches, and more. These skills are critical when conducting search and rescue operations during a real fire.

Virginia Association of Counties Honors Henrico Programs Four Henrico programs won Achievement Awards from the Virginia Association of Counties for innovative programs in 2022. The Department of Human Resources was honored for its program Embracing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Employee Conversations and Experiences. Henrico County Public Library was recognized for its Parent-Child Computer Work and Play Stations at Fairfield Area Library. Lastly, Henrico County Public Schools won awards for two programs - Kids of Promise and the Safety Around the Water: Learn2Swim Program.

Work Progresses on Henrico’s New Indoor Sports and Event Center This past summer, construction began on Henrico’s new 115,000-square-foot sports and event center. Work has continued steadily since then with walls recently going up. Located at the Virginia Center Commons, the new center aims to bring sports tournaments to Henrico with hopes of supporting the surrounding shops and restaurants. Expected to open in the early Fall of 2023, the adaptable event space will have room for 24 volleyball courts or 12 basketball courts and an arena with stadium seating.

Sports and Entertainment Authority to Enhance Sports Tourism The county recently launched the Henrico Sports and Entertainment Authority with Dennis Bickmeier appointed to lead the new authority. They aim to accelerate and improve local sports tourism by attracting tournaments to various field complexes and venues in the county, including the Henrico Sports and Events Center. In addition to running the county’s sports tourism program, which brings in over $60M annually, the Henrico Sports and Entertainment Authority is responsible for managing Henrico’s public/private investments. Work Progresses on Henrico County Parks Upgrades and renovation projects continue to progress on county parks across Henrico. The Rec Center at Deep Run Park has been repainted and newly furnished. Additional work is in progress on the community room, gym, fitness center, and bathrooms near the fields. Work has also begun at Three Lakes Park’s nature center, aquarium, and Lake 1 Trail. Tech for Troops (T4T) helps bridge this digital divide! They provide in need Veterans and children of Veterans with affordable refurbished computers and the training needed to use them, all for low or no cost. This national, non-partisan organization serves both transitioning active duty and veterans, including reserve, guard, and auxiliary service members. So keep your old computers, tablets, cell phones, and other electronic equipment out of landfills and, instead, use them

to improve the lives of Veterans! Monetary donations are always welcome as well. Volunteer T4T offers volunteer opportunities for both individuals and corporations. Their most prominent group was composed of 48 1st Lieutenants in training at Fort Lee. They also have

volunteers and corporations that help out with T4T events across the wider RVA community. In a normal

T4T proactively reached out to and supported kids during the opening months of COVID, donating almost 200 computers to school-age children. To date, T4T has recycled over 600+ tons of equipment (e-waste) to keep it out of local landfills and has distributed quality, refurbished computers to Veterans across the country. They also guarantee data destruction – 100% wiped or shredded – to guarantee your personal and professional data will not “get out.”

Better Fathers Stronger Families

Fatherhood Foundation of Virginia gives dads the skills and support needed to become better dads and husbands. When men are better prepared and supported, their children are more secure and their marriages stay strong. Parenting is not simply a life experience; it is a skill. To be a skilled father takes education, practice, experience, and support. Thankfully, the Fatherhood Foundation of Virginia (FFVA) is here to help fathers grow their parenting skills, increase their confidence in caring for their children, and foster better relationships with their children’s mothers. Each December, FFVA’s Father Christmas program recognizes dads who go above and beyond for their children but need a little help making the holidays merry due to either financial or physical hardship. Nominate an awesome dad in need of assistance from November 1 through 24 at: FatherChristmasVA.org In addition to Father Christmas, FFVA provides parenting programs and support for both new and experienced dads. New Dad Basics With most parenting classes geared toward moms, dads often get left out of the education and preparations. FFVA’s New Dad Basics class gives new dads the correct information to become confident in their role as fathers. This relaxed, interactive class is taught by experienced dads through a “Vegas” conversation, meaning anything goes! The freedom to bring all their questions and get unscripted, “real talk” from experienced fathers is invaluable. Dads receive practical information on a variety of topics such as teamwork, financial planning, and balancing work with a lack of sleep. Classes are available both virtually and in person – crying babies are welcome!

Marriage Coaching

FFVA’s Inside/Out Dad program bridges the gap between incarcerated fathers and their children. Participating dads learn how to deal with their past, face their root problems, and apply achievable action steps to transform their future and that of their families. As they learn how to parent differently moving forward, many fathers also explore the negative impacts their own absent fathers had on their upbringing. This offers further opportunities to make better choices thoughtfully. The Inside/ Out Dad program is a partnership effort with counties in Virginia, prisons, and rehabilitation organizations to form a multifaceted approach to making a significant and lasting impact.

Research shows that 80% of dads in rehab for drug addiction and alcohol dependence did not have a positive male role model growing up. FFVA’s 24/7 Dad class focuses on fathers going through rehabilitation and doing the work needed to get back to their families. This class teaches them how to take a more active role in their kids’ lives, discipline their children, better manage their anger or stress, and work more productively with their children’s mothers. Upon graduation, each participant is invited to a celebratory dinner and presented with a certificate demonstrating their progress toward being a better father.

The split up of families after a marriage breaks down is the number one reason for absent fathers. Unfortunately, many couples do not see the warning signs that their relationship is in danger until it’s too late. FFVA offers marriage and relationship counseling to grow mutual respect, strengthen family bonds, and keep more dads in the home where they can take an active role in raising their kids. Through the guidance of an FFVA coach, couples co-create goals to get their relationship back on track. Premarital coaching is also available for those wanting to build a strong foundation from day one.

We have no reservations about allowing them access to our home in our absence. We trust them implicitly. Richmond Community ToolBank is a nonprofit unlike any other! They have brilliantly identified one of the biggest barriers to project completion- the lack of affordable access to tools and equipment. ToolBank bridges this gap by supplying nonprofits and local organizations with the tools, equipment, and expertise needed to get the job done. This enables these volunteer-based programs to fulfill their mission and enrich the Greater Richmond community. ToolBank’s 10,000-square-foot warehouse near Scott’s Addition houses a huge range of more than 200 high-quality tools and equipment. Over 200 local nonprofits, schools, churches, and civic groups partner with ToolBank which allows them to rent the supplies they need at an affordable price. ToolBank also offers individual lending programs to those wanting to build and maintain a Victory Garden at home or in a shared garden plot. The ability to borrow instead of buy tools, helps more organizations and families turn their dreams into reality. Over the past four years, ToolBank has provided tools to more than 60,000 volunteers to complete 4,000 projects. To get started, all an organization needs to do is register. Then, they can immediately begin ordering tools and equipment. The online ordering platform makes sourcing equipment easy and fast. A community member may either pick up their rented tools from ToolBank’s warehouse or have them delivered to their project site. Facility rentals are also available to groups that need a space in which to complete their projects. ToolBank’s 2,000-square-foot

open floor format event space is perfect for groups needing an area for their indoor volunteer projects, outreach and fundraising function, or other community events. Building Change is ToolBank’s own volunteer program. It invites local groups to sponsor and build a full outdoor classroom of 10 tables to be used to enhance neighborhood spaces throughout Richmond. There’s no need to be an expert craftsman to participate. ToolBank’s experienced staff are there to guide the group through safe and efficient tool use as they work together.
