To My Mom ...

I want to thank my mom.

When I think about family (this is the family issue, by the way), she’s the first thought that pops into my head. After all, I don’t know what I’d do without her.

In my bathroom, resting on the counter in front of my mirror where I dry my hair, is one of those little square signs with lettering. It was a gift from my mom, and it proclaims, “Daughters are little girls who grow up to be your best friend.”

I see it every morning when I get ready for the day, and I smile a little when I do.

So often throughout my day, my week, and my month, something will happen—good or bad, big or small—and my first thought is to pick up my phone and call my mom. She’s my confidant, my sounding board, and my share-just-about-everything-with. She's loving, kind, insightful, and smart.

She’s my mom, and now that I’m an adult, I'm honored to say she’s also my friend.

She’s the glue that held our family together. She was always there, making sure we were all well taken care of, shuttling us kids around, cooking, and all the other things that moms often do. She always went above and beyond—and still does.

Not everyone is lucky enough to grow up with such an amazing mom, and then to continue to have a wonderful relationship as an adult. I am always thankful for it, and I hope she knows how grateful I am for our relationship.

When I think about my own family, I try to model my own parenting after the example she set, and I hope that I have the same close relationship with my own kids when they are adults, too.

So to my mom, Ann Ackerman—thank you for everything. Thank you for making our family so wonderful, and thank you for being such an amazing force in my life!

Yours,

August 2023

letter from the PUBLISHER

Family is what we want it to be ...

The word “family” can mean many things. You have your immediate family, extended family, and friends who are like family. Neighborhoods, schools, and even the Scottsdale community are family. No matter what family looks like, it shapes who we are and who we want to be.

My husband and I lived all over the United States— six states in the past 14 years. But, it was when we moved to Scottsdale with our two children that we felt like we found our forever family.

Scottsdale opened her arms and welcomed us. We love it here and love raising our family here.

I’m excited for this next chapter in my and my family’s life. As someone who’s been in the media business for over 15 years, covering stories all over the world, I’m very excited to focus on Scottsdale’s stories.

I’m so excited to be a part of your family and welcome you into mine. With each other, we can continue to make Scottsdale the best place for all of us. No matter what your family looks like, know that you are a part of the Scottsdale family. And we’re lucky to have each other.

All the best,

Big Dreams

Arizona Diamondbacks Player Nick Ahmed on Baseball, Living in Scottsdale, and His Family

Nick Ahmed has always loved sports.

“I remember being 5 years old and knowing that I loved sports,” he says. “I knew I wanted to grow up and do that. The dream was always there to play Major League Baseball.”

Ahmed began playing at age 7, playing on his brother’s team of 9-year-olds.

“It was a lot of fun to play with my older brother then, and then with my younger brother when I was in high school,” he recounts.

In 2011, his Major League dreams came true when the Atlanta Braves drafted him in the second round. He played Minor League Baseball for the Lynchburg

Hillcats, the farm team for the Braves, in 2012. That same year, he was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks, then called up for his first game in 2014. This season, Ahmed became the first D-backs player to play in 10 seasons for the team.

He’s called the D-backs—and Scottsdale—home ever since.

“I still love putting on my uniform every day and going out and doing what I love,” he says. “Going out there, being part of a team, being outside. And it’s challenging. … I think [baseball] also teaches you a lot about life—learning to deal with failure, be a good teammate, and deal with challenges on and off the field.”

Ahmed plays shortstop, and fans have come to know him as a great fielder and batter.

He takes pride in his fielding skills, which he’s always worked hard to develop.

“Most players, especially at a young age, really gravitate toward hitting. They go to the batting cages, trying to hit home runs, and although I did that, too, I always liked fielding, as well. I always practiced ground balls. It’s something I’ve always worked at and taken pride in, and I’ve always enjoyed playing defense and helping my team win.”

Being part of this season’s winning record is all the sweeter since Ahmed was out most of last season with an injury to his right shoulder—his throwing arm. He had surgery last June and admits the recovery was long and difficult.

“I didn’t know if I’d ever be able to come back, or come back the same as I was,” he shares. “But I’m back out there and playing and starting to feel like I’m getting to be my old self again.”

Not only is Ahmed having fun on the field but also with the team in general. There’s a good blend of veteran players and young players, and that’s creating a good energy.

“There are a lot of young players, and they’re doing really well,” he says. “What I like most about them is that they’re very hungry yet very humble, and just very talented. … It’s been a good mix of guys just starting out in their career and guys [who’ve been playing awhile] who can help them.”

The game energy is different this year, too, with the league’s new rules. Although Ahmed admits he was, like most players, resistant at first—especially about the pitch clock—after now playing for a while, he appreciates the new tempo of the game.

“I think for players it’s better, and I think for the fans [the pitch clock] is a lot better. ... Defensive shifting impacted me a lot, but again, we’ve played with them for a while now, and I’ve gotten used to it.”

In some ways, Ahmed thinks the new rules favor a team like the D-backs, saying, “I think it highlights our ability to wreak havoc on the bases with speed.”

When he’s not enjoying being on the field or with his team, Ahmed is spending time with his wife, Amanda, and their three children—Jackson, 7; Cole, 4.5; and Bella, 2.5.

The couple has been together since they were 16 and have now been married for almost 10 years.

“Doing this life with her has been amazing,” he says.

Living in Scottsdale brings different weather than their home state of Massachusetts, and they both really like it.

“We’re used to the four seasons and the winters [in Massachusetts], and we definitely don’t have those winters here!” he says with laughter.

The good weather allows the family to enjoy spending time outside, which is something they make part of their lifestyle.

“We try to enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle,” he says. “I like to get outside with my kids and go to the park.”

And yes, they do throw the ball around.

“Our boys are just starting to love baseball,” he says. “They’ve also gotten to enjoy coming to the ballpark with me, coming into the clubhouse, and running the bases. It’s been a lot of fun getting to do this with them.”

As the kids get older, the family is beginning to go out more and explore new experiences. They recently spent a day at Saguaro Lake, and have also begun to make haunts like KTR (an action sports playground) part of their rotation.

Life is good, and Ahmed is looking forward to the future—including the rest of this baseball season.

“It’s been fun, we’ve had a good start, our record is good, and hopefully that will continue through the rest of the season and into the playoffs,” he says. “Hopefully, the fans will continue to come out and support the team.”

BIG LESSONS, LITTLE EATERS

Feeding Littles’ Online Program Helps Parents Establish a Healthy Relationship Between Their Kids and Food

EAT RIGHT | HEALTH + WELLNESS
22

When it comes to establishing a healthy relationship with food, it’s never too early—or too late—to learn a thing or two.

This belief is at the heart of Feeding Littles, an online education program that helps families around the globe discover the best way to feed their children through courses that address nearly every key aspect meant to make mealtimes pleasurable and less stressful for parents and kiddos alike.

And with the release of The New York Times bestseller Feeding Littles & Beyond , a cookbook packed with healthy and tasty recipes for eaters from 6 months to 100 years old, founders Megan McNamee and Judy Delaware have all ages covered.

Courses are designed for children from infancy to age 10, and they span transitioning infants to solid foods to balancing elementary schoolers’ picky eating with ensuring they receive proper nutrition. The goal: Enable parents with the tools to make them experts in feeding their kids.

Letting little ones take the lead is the key.

“We teach parents how to raise kids who know what their bodies need while learning to love all types of food,” says McNamee, a registered dietitian nutritionist specializing in maternal/child nutrition, food sensitivities, and eating disorder prevention.

McNamee was teaching baby-led weaning classes when a friend introduced her to Delaware, an occupational therapist and feeding specialist who had been the feeding therapist for her friend’s infant son, Jack.

At the time, McNamee’s infant clients were getting older, and she was tackling the challenge of picky eaters. Her friend thought McNamee and Delaware should join forces.

“You’re both trying to solve the same problem through different fields. You have to meet,” McNamee recalls of the advice.

Since launching in 2014, parents from every continent have benefited from McNamee and Delaware’s expertise, as their children learn to eat independently through intuitive eating.

“Every day, we get messages from people thanking us for changing their relationship with food or guiding them down a different path,” McNamee says.

RECIPE

THREE-INGREDIENT SPINACH FETA TURKEY BURGER

“This simple recipe has become a staple in our home,” McNamee says. “It’s super delicious, takes just minutes to make, and is a great way for everyone to enjoy spinach. I find that my kids are more willing to try cooked spinach in other recipes because they’ve seen it in these burgers.”

INGREDIENTS

• 1 teaspoon olive or avocado oil

• 6 cups loosely packed baby spinach (you can use more or less than this)

• 1 pound ground turkey

• 3/4 cup crumbled feta cheese

• Salt, pepper, and garlic powder

DIRECTIONS

1. Heat 1 teaspoon of olive or avocado oil in a large pan on medium heat. Add spinach to pan and saute until spinach is fully cooked down.

2. Remove spinach from heat and place in a small bowl to cool slightly. Use scissors to cut spinach into smaller pieces.

3. In a separate medium bowl, add ground turkey and feta, then add cooked spinach. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder (to taste). Stir to combine fully.

4. Use clean hands to form 4 to 6 patties. Add patties back to the pan and cook for about 5 minutes on each side, or until the burgers are fully cooked through (internal temperature of 165 F). You also can cook these on the grill.

5. Serve on a whole-grain bun with your choices of toppings—avocado, tomato slices, condiments, etc. Enjoy with your favorite sides!

LOCAL ANIMAL RESCUES ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR OUR FURRY AND NOT-SO-FURRY FRIENDS

Philosopher Immanuel Kant once said, “We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals.” If that’s true, then we can easily judge the hearts of the people behind our local animal rescues as pure and beautiful, indeed. While most people are familiar with rescues that directly help with dog and cat adoptions, there are also great organizations keeping everything from Gila monsters to horses safe. Here are some Scottsdale-based organizations to keep in mind. To help, contact each directly.

PHOENIX HERPETOLOGICAL SOCIETY

This organization was founded in 2001 by three longtime, passionate reptile enthusiasts with a vision to make a difference for reptiles in the state of Arizona. At that time, there was no facility or refuge for unwanted or rescued reptiles. Phoenix Herpetological Society also strongly believes that “conservation begins with education,” so the staff spends time educating the public about reptiles and the importance they have in our ecosystem. Each year, they visit with over 250,000 schoolage children. PhoenixHerp.com

ARIZONA EQUINE RESCUE ORGANIZATION

Arizona Equine Rescue Organization (AERO) was founded in 2001 and specializes in critical care rescues that need medical care when removed from owners by law enforcement, livestock emergency response and technical rescue, livestock disaster evacuation, community education, and more. AERO is an all-volunteer organization that rehabilitates rescued horses and rehomes them. AZEquineRescue.org

FUR THE LOVE OF PAWS

In 2016, a few girlfriends who had a shared love for dogs and a passion for helping to make a difference in the lives of all homeless animals founded this organization. They realized that by assisting in fulfilling the needs of animal shelters and rescues for items like food, toys, beds, blankets, towels, cleaning supplies, and money needed for medical issues, those who were volunteering and working directly with the animals could spend more time focusing on adoptions. Family Night Out

NICER RESTAURANTS THAT ARE FUN FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY

There is nothing quite like gathering around a table to enjoy a family meal together. The only thing better might be gathering around a table to enjoy a family meal that mom and/or dad did not have to shop for, prepare, and clean up after once everyone is done.

If you’re looking for a locale with a great atmosphere that’s perfect for adults, as well as welcomes younger guests with open arms, try one of these favorites.

CULINARY CREATIONS | FOOD + BEVERAGE
Proof 32

Proof ( FourSeasons.com/scottsdale) features a menu of elevated comfort-food classics with a casual, welcoming atmosphere bursting with vibrant decor. While dining, children can enjoy the restaurant’s shuffleboard table and the railroad tracks that run through the restaurant. After dinner, the entire family can enjoy a sweet finale by choosing a retro candy bar or selecting from various homemade ice creams and shakes.

Z’Tejas ( ZTejas.com ) is a must for Tex-Mex-loving families. The restaurant is open for brunch, lunch, and dinner and serves Southwest classics like enchiladas, queso, and street tacos alongside fancier fare, including a Gorgonzola New York strip and grilled ruby trout. Kids 10 and younger get their own special menus with options like nachos, cheese quesadillas, and pancakes. The Z’Tejas chefs are also happy to make any adjustments to a dish. The Scottsdale location has a large patio.

Like Z’Tejas, Cold Beers & Cheeseburgers (ColdBeers. com) also goes the extra mile to accommodate children with such favorites as just-their-size cheeseburger sliders, grilled cheese, hot dogs, corn dogs, and customizable mac ’n’ cheese, as well as root beer floats, tableside s’mores, and cookie skillets for dessert. Every kid’s meal comes with a small drink and fries, chips, or fruit, and on Tuesdays, all kids younger than 12 eat for free. Each location also hosts a family-themed trivia contest on Tuesday evenings.

Wine-loving parents are also in luck in Scottsdale, thanks to Postino ( PostinoWinecafe.com). Both its Kierland and Highland locations offer a bevy of unique wines (by the glass or bottle), while at the same time making kids comfortable with the Postino’s Kids Eats menu. It is filled with activities for the kiddos to work on at the table, including coloring, connecting the dots, fun facts, and tic-tac-toe, along with each child’s choice of items like lemonade, apples, peanut butter and jelly, grilled cheese, and sliced chicken with dipping sauce.

Postino

Both Grassroots Kitchen & Tap (GrassrootsAZ. com) and Pita Jungle (PitaJungle.com) offer premium wine and craft beer options for the parents, and for the kids, extensive kid-friendly menu items.

At Grassroots, every kid’s meal comes with a coupon for a free scoop of ice cream from Sweet Provisions, which is located next door.

At the same time, Pita Jungle has build-yourown-meal options, where kids can choose their culinary adventure with a grain or carb, a vegetable, a protein, a seasonal fruit, and a drink.

Finally, if you’re looking for dinner and a show, opt for Kasai Japanese Steakhouse ( KasaiScottsdale.com) or Angry Crab Shack (AngryCrabShack.com).

While there are also regular dining tables, Kasai features 14 hooded and hoodless teppanyaki tables. At those tables, guests of all ages can watch a chef cooking before them over large iron griddles. Children can order from their own custom menus, from a la carte offerings—including sliders, chicken strips, and teriyaki chicken— or off the adult menus.

At Angry Crab Shack, it’s all about the seafood boil. This Cajun-style group experience is priced by the pound, based on the shellfish and/or seafood ordered. Older kids will love choosing from the mussels, king crab, lobster, clams, shrimp, crawfish, Dungeness crab, and snow crab for the table. Once chosen, each item is boiled and then paired with potatoes, sausage, and seasonal vegetables, making it perfect for even picky young eaters. Once combined, the feast is delivered tableside and poured on covered tables to the delight of guests—especially the younger kids— who are given bibs to add to the experience.

Need additional options? Parents and children alike will also enjoy Pomo Pizzeria , Grimaldi’s Pizzeria , Someburros , Luci’s at the Grove , and Flower Child

Oh So Chic

FROM TRENDY CLOTHES TO FASHION SHOWS FOR KIDS TO THEMED PHOTO SHOOTS, CHEEKY CHIC OFFERS IT ALL

When Chrissy Cunningham moved to Scottsdale from New York in 2011, she grew frustrated at the lack of trendy clothing stores for kids in the area.

“[My mom and I] were craving that cool urban New York shopping experience but couldn’t find it here,” she says.

So they decided to open their own.

Cheeky Chic Baby & Kids Boutique opened off of Via Linda and 90th Street, moving to its current home at Scottsdale Quarter in 2016.

The boutique carries trendy apparel for sizes ranging from newborn to tween, and even some limited items in adult sizes, as well as accessories such as sunglasses, hair items, jewelry, handbags, and more.

“The clothing we carry is geared toward the cool, rocker, trendy, and preppy in all of us,” Cunningham says. “Our selections are very fashion-forward, and there is something in our store for everyone!”

While there is a large selection of brands, one favorite includes Jagged Culture, which is exclusive to Cheeky Chic in Arizona.

“The designer is a dear friend who hand-sews and creates all of her trendy artistic pieces in Los Angeles,” Cunningham explains. “Her brand is a customer favorite. We also carry a heavy assortment of rock ’n’ roll concert tees for babies up to adult sizes from brands such as Rowdy Sprout, Daydreamer, and Chaser. Our infant, baby, and toddler brands include Huxbaby, which is a trendy line made with organic cotton, as well as one of our best-selling popular brands Fairwell, which is super soft and made in the United States.”

As for the store’s name, Cunningham shares that it was inspired by her son, Chase, who had “the cutest and chubbiest cheeks” when he was born. Cheeky Chic is a nod to his cheeks, as well as his “spunky, cheeky personality,” with Chic added as a nod to the type of clothing offered.

Running the store—which celebrates its 10th year in business next spring—is a family affair. Cunningham and her mom, Geri, run it, but each family member also has a role.

“I love that I get to work with my mom!” Cunningham says. “She and I are extremely close, and it has been a blessing to rely on each other’s strengths to grow this business over the past nine years.”

In addition to helping run the business, Geri is also a photographer. Together, the pair organizes photo shoots with local models and children in their fashions. Often they have fun themes such as “Stranger Things,” “Legally Blonde,” “90210,” and recently, a “Barbie”-inspired photoshoot.

They also hold a large fashion show yearly at Scottsdale Quarter’s Quad. Approximately 130 children participate, walking the runway to rock ’n’ roll music. The pair’s goal is for each child to feel like a rock star for the day and gain confidence through the experience.

Children interested in being involved in upcoming shows or photo shoots can keep an eye on the store’s Instagram and Facebook pages for casting information. It’s free to attend and participate.

SKATE IT FORWARD PHX COLLECTS SKATEBOARD EQUIPMENT FOR THOSE IN NEED

WHEEL GOOD

A couple of summers ago, Rhodes noticed a young boy at the local skateboard park working hard for weeks to earn his first skateboard made up of used parts, only to have the used deck snap.

“I immediately thought of all my old boards that were just sitting in my garage collecting dust but still had plenty of life in them, and so my family and I went back to grab him one,” he says, adding that the look of excitement and appreciation on the boy’s face after he handed him the board was priceless.

This experience inspired Rhodes and his wife, Jenny, to think about how many other people probably have gently used skateboards sitting around that others could use.

Blake Rhodes grew up in Scottsdale with a dad who loved to skateboard.

He eagerly took to his dad’s interest, spending his childhood skateboarding with his friends.

“I stepped away from skateboarding when I joined the Navy and started working and having a real career, but came back to it when our oldest son wanted to learn, and he quickly got me back into it,” Rhodes says.

Throughout the years as a skateboarder, Rhodes learned about a practice called “earning.”

As he explains, the term refers to when a person doesn’t have a skateboard, but wants to try to get one.

“At most skate parks, people will let someone use their skateboard to try and learn something new, and when they learn whatever it is they are trying to do, the person will give the other person something toward their skateboard like wheels, trucks, or an old skateboard deck, because they showed a level of commitment to earn it.”

“The concept of paying it forward with used skateboarding equipment gave life to Skate It Forward PHX.”

Blake and Jenny founded Skate It Forward PHX in July of 2021. The couple, both teachers in Scottsdale, has one key goal: To provide everyone with the opportunity to have access to skateboards and skateboard equipment.

As Rhodes notes, Skate It Forward PHX collects used and new skateboard donations, as well as equipment, and then “pays it forward” by making any needed repairs and then giving them to people who are in need of one.

“It doesn’t matter how old someone is, or their gender, their area code, ethnicity, or anything else, because we want everyone to know they can get a skateboard and use it as a positive and healthy outlet in their life,” he says.

Although Rhodes says he and Jenny were not sure if Skate It Forward PHX would catch on, they were pleasantly surprised by the positive reaction and flood of donations from the skateboarding community.

MUST SEE | LIFE + CULTURE
42

“We use Instagram as our go-to for connecting with the community and usually meet most people for donations or deliveries at a skate park close to wherever they live in the Phoenix area,” he says. “The aspect I enjoy most since we started Skate It Forward PHX is the people in this community and the look on people’s faces when we give them a board or equipment.”

Rhodes is also extremely grateful for the outpouring of support from the skateboarding community.

“Scottsdale and the surrounding cities have people doing incredible things in the skateboarding community every day all over Arizona,” he says, adding that they have already been able to get hundreds of boards back under people’s feet to keep them skateboarding.

“Hearing people’s stories whenever we meet up with them and some of the trials and tribulations they’ve gone through, but learning how they still found a will to continue pushing on, is immensely humbling and motivating at the same time.”

Backyard Chickens

Chickens have become increasingly popular as pets in both suburban and urban areas during the last 20 years. Backyard chickens may seem to be an unsuspecting animal to keep as a pet but the tried and true egg producers are back in fashion as food costs are soaring and families are looking for more food independence in light of recent supply chain shortages. There’s a lot to like about raising chickens in your backyard. Surprisingly, chickens are relatively low maintenance. And bonus – unlike dogs, they don’t need to be bathed or groomed, and they don’t shed on your clothes or require training. Could backyard chickens be the perfect pet/producer to add to your home?

Things To Consider Before Getting Chickens:

First, check local town ordinances to ensure that keeping chickens is even allowed in your neighborhood or if there is a limit to the number of chickens you can keep at once.

Make sure you have the space for a henhouse or a full-size chicken coop. It has to hold a feeder and water containers, a roosting area, and a nest box for every three hens. A proper coop should be large enough that you can stand in it to gather eggs and shovel manure comfortably, but a simple hen house can be quite a bit smaller. Plus, any housing must be sturdy enough to keep your chickens safe from all the predators out there. Gorgeous coops are aplenty on places like Pinterest if you’re building your own, but many pre-made options are available through various farm supply stores as well.

Chickens need food and water daily. Feed is about $20 per 50-pound bag, but prices vary depending on your location and the quality of the feed. How long a bag lasts depends on the number of chickens you have.

Hens will lay eggs through Spring and Summer and into the Fall, as long as they have 12 to 14 hours of daylight. Expect to collect eggs daily, or even twice a day.

Historic Staycations

TWO LOCAL PROPERTIES MELD HISTORY AND LUXURY FOR PERFECT GETAWAYS

School may be back in session, but that doesn’t mean that summer is over—which means it’s the perfect time for a staycation. Grab your swimsuit and sunscreen, and get ready for a luxurious getaway right here in the Valley. After all, less travel time means more vacay time.

Aptly named Mountain Shadows (MountainShadows.com)—it stands in the shadow of Camelback Mountain—this storied resort has both a richly historical past and a celebrated future. The original destination was built in 1959 and drew everyone from international travelers to Hollywood stars such as Liz Taylor and The Monkees. By 2004, it had closed its doors, and in 2014, it was demolished. In 2017, it reopened, rebuilt with sleek designs that capture both the essence of the property and the same stunning views of Camelback.

Sleek, bold, and luxurious, there are abundant thoughtful spaces, such as The Gallery, an art gallery that offers museum-quality exhibitions that change every two months, and The Living Room, a sunken space where you can settle in with a drink. There’s also the Short Course, the 18-hole golf course where every hole is a par 3.

The main restaurant is Hearth ’61, named in honor of the year Paradise Valley officially became a town. Helmed by lauded chef Charles Wiley, it offers modern American fare.

Nearby in Old Town Scottsdale is Hotel Valley Ho (HotelValleyHo.com), another property with a history. A landmark since 1956, it was built by architect Edward L. Varney in a distinctive modern-meets-Southwestern style. Today, the mid-century modern hideaway is a popular locale for stays, meals, events, spa treatments, and its weekend summer pool parties.

Its restaurant, ZuZu, is helmed by Executive Chef Russell LaCasce and offers everything from Steak Tartare and Lobster Mac + Cheese to Slow Braised Pork Shank. Of course, most end a meal with the locale’s famous over-the-top Show Stopper Shake.

Hotel Valley Ho is also known for its events, which are often open to those stopping by as well as staying on property. The summer sees its popular market series, which showcases local purveyors, wines, beers, spirits, and eats, as well as celebrity chef dinners. There’s also the Magical History Tour and live music (select Friday and Saturday evenings).

The rooms have a distinctive modern style, and those looking for a home-away-from-home can choose the two-story, 1,500-squarefoot Presidential Loft, which includes a full kitchen.

There is no time like the present to start a conversation with someone advancing in age. You can approach the conversation with a recent experience, “Mom, a friend had to take much time off work recently because her mom fell and was in the hospital. She had to go to rehab before she was able to return home, but still needs some help. Can we begin talking about how you would want to handle that situation if something like that happened to you? I want to respect your wishes and understand what you would expect of me before we are faced with a stressful situation.”

AIMEE COXHEAD IS MAKING THE WORLD SPARKLE ONE BOOKMARK AT A TIME

ALL THAT GLITTERS

If necessity is the mother of invention, perhaps lockdown is the aunt of creativity. That was the case for Glittermark founder Aimee Coxhead.

“I created my first glitter shaker bookmark back in 2020, just before my three kids were heading back to school that fall,” she explains. “We had spent so much time together during Covid that everyone was feeling a little anxious about going back and what that was going to be like. We had been practicing positive affirmations at home, and I wanted a way for them to be accessible back at school, so I made my first bookmark with the affirmations inside and added the glitter to make them more exciting.”

It wasn’t long before a craft project for her kids turned into something more.

“I shared it on Instagram and got so much positive feedback and realized that other families were feeling the same way we did, and a friend of mine encouraged me to start selling them,” says Coxhead. “My favorite thing about creating these glitter shaker bookmarks are the messages that I receive from my customers. Moms frequently share with me that their kids are more excited to read now that they have a Glittermark. My hope is the Glittermark feels more like an experience while reading and less of a placeholder.”
