LIFESTYLE LETTER

Get Lost

April 2023 PUBLISHER

Tammy Fellows | tammy.fellows@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

I remember when my kids were really young (my oldest just turned 18— happy birthday, B!), my husband and I would make it a point to plan adventures for them on the weekends. Zoo? Of course! Park to play? Yes, please. Lego exhibits and The Wiggles, Live? Yes, that, too. The point is, we would explore. We’d explore everything from the town to culture to experiences; we made the time to try things and make memories. As we’ve all gotten older, those times have been replaced with extracurricular activities, carpools, work commitments, and them wanting to spend more time with their friends. We’ve fallen into a routine that’s more about just getting through each day. This issue—our Explore Issue—reminded me that we all need to make time to explore; to try new places and things, to go on an adventure, and to experience more. I hope this issue sparks that for you, too. Where will you go, and what will you experience? From food and drinks to events to cool places around town, there is so much to see and do. Take a class, hike a trail, take in a show. Make time for the things that matter most to you, but often come last on the calendar. If April showers bring May flowers, make time to play in the rain! Here’s your reminder to—and I say this with warmth in my heart—get lost! Happy exploring! Yours,

letter from the PUBLISHER

And I think to myself … what a wonderful world. April 22nd marks Earth Day, which has been observed since 1970! I love that it is recognized all over the globe each year! What a beautiful thing to celebrate—our world! I feel that people have become more aware of the severe necessity to conserve our planet and adopt more environmentally friendly lifestyles. We are lucky enough to inhabit this incredible place, which is very much alive and fruitful, and enjoy it. There are so many ways to give back to our planet. Here are some ideas to do your part. • Reduce, reuse, and recycle. • Volunteer for cleanups in our community. • Educate people, especially our youth, on the importance of conservation. • Conserve our water supply. • Consume sustainable products. • Plant a tree … maybe on your birthday each year. At the end of the day, you should ask yourself what kind of world you want to live in. Respect and love our planet! Be grateful, be kind, and live well, Tammy Fellows Owner/Publisher

Original superwoman FORMER SUPERMODEL, AUTHOR, AND WELLNESS ADVOCATE KIM ALEXIS LOVES HER DOWN-TO-EARTH LIFE IN SCOTTSDALE WITH HER HUSBAND AND RESCUE PUP

She’s graced more than 500 magazine covers, appeared in six of Sports Illustrated’s legendary swimsuit issues, ran eight marathons—one a month after giving birth to her first son— and is one of the elite models who helped create the supermodel category. Kim Alexis has clearly demonstrated superhuman gifts. But on a Thursday afternoon, the author and health and wellness advocate candidly reveals a personal situation that sounds extremely mortal. She has just recovered from food poisoning. Letting ground turkey defrost on her kitchen counter too long, she thinks, was the culprit. “I did it to myself!” Alexis says with a hearty laugh that reveals humility and the acknowledgment that she should’ve known better. “After that, I cleaned out the whole fridge. Took everything out.” And just like that, one of the world’s most recognizable and admired faces dispels any preconceived notions about A-list models being aloof and out of touch with the everyday person. It doesn’t take long to realize that despite her fame and beauty, the Scottsdale resident will always be that down-toearth girl from Lockport, New York, a town of about 25,000 outside of Buffalo. She had been athletic since she was a child and swam competitively in high school. Despite her 5-foot-9-inch slender frame, she didn’t think about being a model until she was a senior in high school and was discovered by Elite Model Management in New York City. “I always had wet hair,” Alexis says. “My dad always told me I was the most beautiful girl in all of Lockport. I’m sure he told my sister the same thing.” For the last six years, Alexis has called Scottsdale home, thanks to falling off a horse. She met her husband of five years, Jeffery Schwartz, through mutual friends while in Colorado. She was at a time in her life when she felt being solo was best. “I was kind of dating, but I didn’t really like any of the guys,” Alexis recalls. There was a spark with Schwartz, but a long-distance relationship wasn’t appealing. “I had moved to New York City. Why would I date a guy who lives in Scottsdale?” Six months later, Alexis fell off a horse. She recalled Schwartz had also. She called him to talk about it. The spark smoldered into a flame, and she came out to visit him. The outdoorsy nature-lover felt right at home. “I saw oranges on the trees, the grass … this is where I want to be,” Alexis says. While a bad knee made her give up running, Alexis remains athletic. She gets her endorphins and heart pumping through daily walks with her 140-pound rescue dog, Stump. At Mountainside Fitness, she can be found on a rowing machine or bike, or working out with dumbbells. Diet also plays a role. Alexis emphasizes different ways to make dishes healthier and how to incorporate good food into daily eating, like including a salad for lunch or dinner daily. She discusses more of this in her e-book, Cheat Eat. “Everybody's got their own definition of healthy. I’m constantly on the lookout for what works for me,” she says. Alexis was a new high school graduate when she was whisked off to Rome for her first modeling job at 18. After landing, her taxi drove by the Colosseum. She was awed. “I saw that in my textbook six months before. My history book just came alive,” Alexis says. “That’s what was the most fun about modeling. I loved the travel. Seeing how other people lived was just cool.”

22

A RT IST ’S PA LE T T E | L IFE + CULTURE

By 1983, Alexis had become the face of Revlon and was on her way to hundreds of covers spanning Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, and Glamour—for which she still holds the record for most covers. She made six Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issues, including one five months after having her first of three sons, now all grown. Over the years, Alexis has successfully transitioned into a spokesperson for fitness, health, and lifestyle products she believes in to encourage women at any age to stay healthy and active. Her books focus on topics she has lived and experienced, from getting discovered to eating clean to her journey with thyroid issues. Alexis is working on her most recent publication, Super Health, a bound paperback that will be a collection of her five health e-books, creating a handy, one-source guide for readers. Counseling young models to be strong in an industry where they can be taken advantage of is also on her agenda. She recalls leaving home for the first time, making her own money, and living with only the rules she placed upon herself. It can be overwhelming and lead to precarious situations.

However, being an accomplished swimmer gave Alexis a strong sense of self that generated a vibe of, “I’m not going to put up with stuff,” which kept her from being compromised. “I’d tell them, ‘Don’t feel so desperate that you feel you have to do whatever it is they tell you to do,’” Alexis says. “It’s not about me, but what I can teach people about my experiences.” Her runway days may be behind her, but the impact Alexis’ career has had on countless admirers remains alive and very present. She often meets fans who recognize her from her cover girl days, and who share how she motivated them in their own lives. “You don’t realize it as much when you’re in your 20s. You don’t realize what your photos will do years later,” she says. “To be able to hear stories that I helped to transform or inspire people … it’s special.” KimAlexis.com Hair/makeup by Rachel Fuchs from Pucci Salon, PucciSalon.com

IT ’S ELECTRIC! LOCAL ATTORNEY DRIVES GEST CARTS—GREEN, EASY, SAFE, TRANSPORTATION— INTO SCOTTSDALE

ARTICLE BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ PHOTOGRAPHY BY SOPHIA DUBOIS

T R E N D SE T T E R | AU TO + MARI NE

The past several months have been among the busiest times in the history of Scottsdale, especially for resident Jason Pritchett. As an active Thunderbird, Pritchett and his fellow members hosted the WM Phoenix Open—the largest zero-waste sporting event in the world—in February at the TPC Scottsdale. While care is taken to ensure the event doesn’t impact the environment, equally as much care is taken to ensure it impacts the community. Its success ensures that millions of dollars are available to fund local literacy programs and domestic violence shelters; provide school clothes for low-income families; and even furnish safe places to live for recently homeless, veterans in need, and youth aging out of the foster care system.

Beyond this, Pritchett continues to lead Radix Law Firm, which is the first multi-lawyer traditional law firm in Arizona to be approved as an Alternative Business Structure in the U.S., as its president. Somehow, and on top of all he already had on his plate, Pritchett also ushered in a new era of sustainable transportation in Arizona with the launch of GEST Carts. “GEST Carts, which stands for Green, Easy, Safe Transportation, are 100% electric carts that operate similar to car transportation services like Uber or Lyft, but at a local and locally owned micro level,” says Pritchett. To use the free transportation alternative, Scottsdale riders simply need to “call” a cart through the mobile app—downloadable through the Apple Store and Google Play Store—which tracks driver locations and estimated arrival times. The vehicles are able to drive on main roads, keeping with the flow of traffic, but in a much more sustainable and enjoyable way than traditional transportation. “I learned of the business model thanks to my brother—and now business partner— Japheth, who saw the brand explode on the scene in other markets,” says Pritchett. “Since 2018 alone, GEST Carts debuted across Charlotte, Chicago, Cincinnati, Detroit, Denver, and Las Vegas. Given our thriving nightlife and event schedule, together we knew Scottsdale was ready for something like this, too.” CONTINUED >

AP R I L 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/S C OT TS DA L E

27

When researching the business, beyond the obvious environmental benefits, the Pritchett brothers loved that though open-air, each GEST Cart offers seat belts, air conditioning, and even heat for guests, something lacking as it relates to alternative transportation in South Scottsdale’s popular Entertainment District. “We also love that all riders are free thanks to partnerships with businesses and events who advertise on the GEST Carts,” says Pritchett. There are currently six GEST Carts in operation, each able to travel up to 35 miles per hour. They are able to transport riders between Miller to the east, Goldwater to the west, Chapparal to the north, and Osborn to the south, and there are plans to expand before year’s end. GEST Carts are also actively working to provide transportation support during large-scale events after successfully doing so during the WM Phoenix Open, the events leading up to the Super Bowl, and Cactus League Spring Training. “Given our current coverage area, and our focus on events, we think GEST Carts can also lower the incidence of drunk driving,” says Pritchett. “For those who haven’t experienced flying privately, it’s just as fun as you imagine it to be,” says Chad Verdaglio, owner and president of Sawyer Aviation. One way to skip the lines and hassles of commercial flying is to take to the friendly skies by flying privately through Sawyer Aviation, a private jet charter company headquartered at Scottsdale Airport. Originally Sawyer School of Aviation in 1961, it has since grown into an aviation company with operations in private charter travel, aircraft management, sales and acquisitions, and cutting-edge innovations in emergency medical transport. Sawyer Aviation’s private charter flights go to over 5,000 airports across North America and the Caribbean, with a focus on making the flight experience as enjoyable and smooth as possible. “When customers fly private, it’s all about convenience and comfort,” Verdaglio says. “They can drive up to the jet, have their luggage loaded and their cars valeted, and leave at the exact time they’ve requested, flying straight to their intended destination.”

To fly charter, the process is very similar to booking commercial flights— future passengers go on the website and book a one-way ticket or enter in the details and get a quote for the trip. Verdaglio shares that while charter flights are more expensive than commercial airplane travel (he estimates the cost is about two to three times a full fare ticket per person), it is still a value because of the convenience. “With the personalized service, the capability to have the airplane to yourself and those closest to you, and the ability to go where you want, when you want, the extra expense is worth it to many,” he says. He adds that the expected clientele for private air travel is changing. “We have clients across the board that fly privately with us, and the interest in flying private charter is definitely accelerating,” he says. “It’s great for businesses, but it’s also convenient for families with kids. “Flying privately is no longer a bucket list item,” he continues. “The value exceeds the cost.” CONTINUED >

In addition to offering private charter flights, Sawyer Aviation continues to be a flight school, with more than 6,000 graduates to date. In the two decades that Verdaglio has been at the company, it has added multiple offerings, including SawyerMX, which does 24/7 airplane maintenance services. Most recently, Sawyer Aviation added an additional 50,000 square feet of hangar and office space. “The added space is used for plane maintenance and management, but more than that, it allows for more offices for our employees, more room to host events, and the ability to offer our clients more hangar space,” Verdaglio explains. More than the private charter flights that go most anywhere at the click of a button, Verdaglio, who purchased Sawyer Aviation in 2002, says that its employees make the company stand out. “We recently were honored with a spot on the Inc. 5000 list in recognition of our work, and it’s all because of our dedicated team and loyal clients,” he shares. “Looking to the future, we hope to continue to add aircraft and amazing people to our team.” Added to its dedication to its team, Sawyer Aviation gives back to the community regularly, often hosting charitable events at its hangars for some of the Valley’s top nonprofits. At the end though, Verdaglio says it all comes down to the passengers. “For those who haven’t flown private yet, you should give it a try—you may never want to fly commercial again,” he says. “Plus, we have better snacks.” SawyerAviation.com

While beer and wine are absolutely fine, why not shake up happy hour by sipping something new to you? Thanks to the Valley’s top mixology menus, there are copious cocktails out there for those seeking to experiment. The options tantalize the taste buds with the most truly unique specialty drinks. Some play on nostalgia, as Bevvy (Bevvy.com) in Old Town Scottsdale does with its Cereal Killer ($14). It evokes childhood memories by combining cereal-washed almond milk with Cruzan Aged White Rum, coconut, white cacao, toasted almond bitters, and tiny marshmallows that look an awful lot like Lucky Charms. Another must for nostalgia is at Diego Pops (DiegoPops.com). Its Guava Coconut ($15), made with Ciroc Coconut Vodka, coconut water, and guava juice, is served in a baby coconut, which is sure to send guests on a walk down the memory lane of their favorite tropical vacations. Others take a calming approach to recipe development. For example, ZuZu at Hotel Valley Ho (HotelValleyHo.com) has its Purple People Eater ($16). It stars a house-made honey infused with refreshing ripe blueberries and soothing lavender. The comforting elixir is paired with Floral Botanist Gin before being topped with lime juice. Prosecco adds bubbly effervescence. CONTINUED >

True Food Kitchen (TrueFoodKitchen.com) also offers an intoxicatingly refreshing means to stimulate the senses with its Tee Time ($14). It is made with Tomatin Dualchas Scotch, known for its delicate, candy-like sweetness. The scotch is infused with aromatic chamomile, a critical aid in digestion that also helps reduce anxiety, and then combined with lime juice and Barrow’s Intense, a liqueur made with fresh ginger. Some of the cocktails on the menu at Cala Scottsdale (CalaScottsdale.com) also fall into this category, including Mez-Cala ($20), which features CENTR CBD sparkling water, as well as Dos Hombres Mezcal, and Liquid Alchemist ginger. There are also those who take great pride in exposing guests to a spirit they have never heard of, let alone tasted. Count CRUjiente Tacos (CRUTacos.com) in that camp. The upscale taqueria challenges guests to get out of their comfort zones with its JapanKnees Bees ($12). It starts with silky Suntory Toki Whiskey from Japan, which gives it a subtle sweetness and spicy finish. The whiskey is enhanced with raw liquid honey that has been infused with cascade hops. Similarly, Sushi Roku Scottsdale (SushiRoku. com) currently offers a cocktail called Sundown On Sunset ($18). In addition to gin, this beauty features Ozeki Nigori Sake from Asia, and Liquid Alchemist’s blood orange syrup. It is finished with sweet apricot brandy, lime juice, and a dash of grapefruit bitters to balance all the bold flavors. Finally, several mixology menus simultaneously play on color, aromatics, and hard-to-get spirits. Renata’s Hearth (RenatasHearth.com) certainly falls into this category with its Los Muertos ($22). It starts with reposado tequila infused with serrano peppers. The tequila is combined with agave and lime juice, and then activated charcoal, turning the entire potion black. Rimmed with black lava salt, Los Muertos is doused in smoke and then topped with a cloche to capture the aromatics until they arrive at the table for the reveal. Housewife Behavior ($19) at Maple & Ash (MapleAndAsh.com) is another boozy doozy. It is made with fresh strawberry-lychee juice, Italicus Rosolio di Bergamotto to add floral and botanical notes, and a Syrah float to add dimension. Expect dark berry flavors initially, but a light, bright, fruity finish with a hint of lemongrass.

THE ONE DAY HOME TRANSFORMATION New Interior Doors Quickly Bring a Big Change

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROCHELLE PEREZ ARTICLE BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN

H OM E U P DAT E | ARTS + CULTURE

Marina DeWit and James Bernau became longtime family friends after meeting through their children’s mutual activities for over a decade. For many, Covid brought lots of changes and created a pivotal opportunity for these entrepreneurs to co-own a new business for the community. With their previous experience in both corporate and small business, they became the local dealership for One Day Doors & Closets of Arizona. New interior doors, whether bedroom, pantry, closet, or others, can completely change the look of your home. And for many, their houses are getting older—meaning the doors look outdated or bland and reflect on the rest of the home’s style. The challenge for homeowners is that replacing interior doors has always been a substantial undertaking.

Until recently. Choosing doors at a big box store typically means minimal options of door styles and sizes, along with the fact that doors off the shelf will not fit a homeowner’s existing doorjambs. Door installation is difficult in existing homes due to foundation settling, uneven flooring, odd door sizes, and bowed jambs. It becomes an invasive house project that involves removing existing doorframes, installing pre-hung doors, patching, and painting, while taking weeks of living in a construction zone with a contractor or handyman constantly being present. “We’re Arizona’s premier interior door replacement company and have the highest customer rating over any other company,” says Bernau. “We replace your interior doors in just one day without any messy construction in your house. The doors are precisely measured to the existing frames, custom crafted, and professionally painted, ensuring beautiful doors that arrive at the home and are installed in just a few hours.”

The pair opened for business just a year ago and have been awarded “Rookies of the Year” by One Day Doors & Closets because of their commitment to quality and high standards of customer service. With the revolutionary 3D measuring technology, One Day Doors provides custom-fit interior doors without replacing the door frames.

DeWit adds, “We save you time and money while transforming your home to the style you want, stress-free.” One Day Doors & Closets of Arizona offers a large selection of styles for interior doors, as well as closet doors, barn doors, and closet organizers. Customers can visit the showroom located in North Phoenix to make selections to fit their unique tastes and transform their homes. “We can replace 20-25 doors in just one day,” Bernau states. “For most contractors, that would take over two weeks. And we pride ourselves on the white glove service. We’re registered contractors and have over 30 years of combined experience with our employees.” He continues, “We make it a smooth experience from beginning to end.” Customers can easily transform their homes in five simple steps: 1. Call for a free, in-home consultation.

46

2. Visit the showroom to choose the door style, weight, paint color, and hardware options. 3. The one-day measure technician will measure the door frames with the company’s proprietary 3D measuring technology. 4. The new doors will be custom-crafted and painted in the One Day Doors & Closets’ factory. 5. The home is transformed with custom doors installed in just a few hours. The partners share that what they most enjoy about the business, besides the great team, is helping customers see their visions become a reality and exceeding expectations. “We’re a small local business that can provide customers with the best home improvement experience. Our doors can be installed in record time without mess, hassle, or extreme cost. You will love what doors do!” DeWit concludes.

Meet the ‘Ambassador of

Possibility’

Mark Victor Hansen—Co-Author of Chicken Soup for the Soul— Talks Books, Speaking, and Helping Others Reach Their Potential ARTICLE BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY SOPHIA DUBOIS

48

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | A RTS + CULTURE

No one can argue that Mark Victor Hansen isn’t a huge success. The now-multimillionaire has written or co-authored more than 300 books, sold more than 500 million copies of his Chicken Soup for the Soul books, is a global keynote and motivational speaker to top corporations, and is known as the “Ambassador of Possibility.” But it wasn’t always that way. When he tried to publish the first of his now widely popular Chicken Soup for the Soul series, he was turned down 144 times. Yes, 144 times. What set this inspirational and motivational author and speaker apart—and what he strives to teach others—is that he believed in himself, and he didn’t give up. Instead, he saw the possibilities ahead. Since then, the Happiness Hall of Fame (a nonprofit that recognizes special people who have advanced the cause of happiness worldwide) inductee has made it a mission to try to help as many people as possible

reach their potential, find happiness, and find success. “Everyone has infinitely more talent than they think,” he says. “I’m trying to help people wake up to their full self-potential.” In addition to the Chicken Soup books, Hansen has authored motivating books such as The One Minute Millionaire... The Enlightened Way to Wealth, How to Think Bigger: And Go From Ordinary… To Extraordinary, Dare to Win: The Guide to Getting What You Want Out of Life (co-authored with Jack Canfield), and his latest, Ask! The Bridge From Your Dreams to Your Destiny, which he co-wrote with his wife, Crystal Dwyer Hansen. Some of his topics are inspired by the people he meets, he says. “I’m 75, and I’m going to live to be 127— with options for renewal—and I’ve talked to 7 million people live. And, after we sign books or go on YouTube, people always ask

questions. I always go back and process and distill the answers, and I figure if one person is asking, others must be wondering, too,” he says. “They pour their hearts out in 30 seconds and tell you what their issues are, and I’m attempting to address them all.” Hansen also recently launched MarkVictorHansenLibrary.com, which provides ghostwriting and publishing services. Through this, he helps anyone interested in becoming an author create and publish a book. He’s also teaching “the four freedoms” right now, and finishing a book about them. “Those are 1. money freedom to buy 2. your time freedom so you can have 3. great relationships freedom so you can have the 4. freedom to manifest your magnificent purposefulness—that is unique to each individual,” he says. “I’m your wake-up call,” he continues.
