Happy New Year!
January 2023 PUBLISHER
Tammy Fellows | tammy.fellows@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Welcome to 2023! I don’t know about you, but there’s something about a new year that feels like the first day of school to me. It’s a clean slate ahead that’s filled with possibilities. I don’t make resolutions (I mean, how many times can I promise myself that I’m going to finally go to the gym or stop eating desserts or that I’m really going to make time to clean out those closets), but I do take time to stop and reassess. It’s like those reminders I set in my phone that remind me to do something … oh, it’s a new year? Ding! Time to do XYZ. Often, the turning of a new year is when I remind myself to be more mindful of my actions and not get so caught up in just my day-to-day to-do list. If you’re like me, you’ll enjoy some of the health and mindfulness-focused stories we have in this issue. Find tranquility at a unique destination, learn about a place where can optimize your health, and check out a Pilates training center. We also share what’s next at Scottsdale Fashion Square and what to expect at the WM Phoenix Open, and we explore Monterey County (so peaceful!). I hope you enjoy this issue and wish you the very best in 2023! Yours,

letter from the PUBLISHER
To new beginnings … Ah … January! For many, New Year’s resolutions are set; goals, aspirations, self-improvement, and change are the focus. For me, it’s more than that. I see myself and all of us really, constantly evolving. There is no appropriate time or need to wait to start your shift. Jan. 1 is simply when people tend to choose it. I have something for you—it’s a gift that I received from my grocery store cashier, Marlene. One day in December last year, I stood in her line as I had many times before, and she suddenly said to me (as I gazed in autopilot), “Do you make New Year’s resolutions?” I said back to her, “You know … honestly, I don’t. They never seem to work out for me, and then I just feel disappointed in myself.” She responded back, “I have something for you.” I waited in anticipation of what she would say next. “It’s a book. It’s called ‘One Word.’ Have you heard of it?” I replied, “No, what is that?” She begins to explain in her own words the concept of the book, which in a nutshell, is really about finding one word (actually, the word finds you) that resonates with you for a whole year. It’s what you live by; it’s what you pay attention to in all that you do on a daily basis. I was fascinated and thanked her for her insight, as it made so much sense to me. I immediately got to my car, loaded up my groceries, pulled up Amazon, and bought the book. When it arrived, I soaked it up like a sponge. It’s a very quick, digestible, and easy read. The word that found me was “discover.” For all of 2022, I had this word saved as my home screen photo on my phone, so I saw it multiple times each day. I realized that by integrating just this one word for an entire year— the things I learned and opened myself up to—my growth was exponential! I share this with you only to give you a new way to look at change and growth. It may not be as simple as setting a goal and achieving it. Sometimes you have to look at the whole picture and live it every day. I hope you all have a wonderful new year, and may you live a life that is in constant evolution. Be grateful, be kind, and live well, Tammy Fellows Owner/Publisher

Dr. Carrie Bordinko
A Life-Changer Through a Union of Science, Technology, and Good Old-Fashioned Hard Work, Benessair Not Only Changes Lives, it Saves Them, Too ARTICLE BY GEORGANN YARA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SOPHIA DUBOIS
Often, she’s viewed as a last resort. But Dr. Carrie Bordinko doesn’t see this as a negative. It’s an affirmation that Benessair, her premier medicaland science-backed facility that specializes in health, fitness, longevity, and every cutting-edge method to achieve all of the above, is doing exactly what she set out to do when she brought this to the Valley. Previously reserved for celebrities and top athletes, Benessair is a one-stop shop featuring nearly every kind of apparatus, equipment, therapy, and service for anyone’s optimal personalized program. Think a hyperbaric chamber, infusion therapy, massage
therapy, biometric testing, physical therapist, nutritionist, gym … you get the idea. The upscale private sessions attract both men and women, typically in their late 40s to early 70s, who have successful careers, raised their families, and now have the time and resources to focus on themselves for the long term. By redefining their priorities, most see this as a serious investment in their overall wellness, just as vital as a home, retirement fund, or stock portfolio. “The personalization that every single person gets when they walk through the door is unparalleled in the industry,” Bordinko says. “We take them through CONTINUED >

the entire facility and explain all options available while educating each unique individual on how they can maximize the treatment options for their needs.” Many find Bordinko on their own or through word of mouth in a quest to lose weight, have more energy, gain strength, or discover the best version of themselves. But some are sent to Benessair by their own physicians as a life-saving measure. This was the case of one client, a successful woman whose health was so dire her doctor told her that Bordinko was her best shot at living. With Benessair’s customized program, in eight weeks she lost 15 pounds and went from not being able to walk 200 feet to boxing in the gym. Her cardiologist commended her for making such huge strides in a short period of time. “She is able to go on weekend walks with her grandkids,” Bordinko says. “She wants to be able to function without pain, and we’ll be able to bring that to her after a 12-month journey.” However, not all clients are in a life-ordeath situation and are just short of reaching optimization. They are in their mid-50s to early 60s without health challenges, but see where their parents are currently health- and fitness-wise and want to avoid that 20 years down the road for themselves. Some want to avoid the pitfalls their friends are heading toward by taking control of how they age. For example, a 59-year-old man with little health problems who’s fit, works out
six days a week, and has a good diet may be seen as someone at the top of his game. But there’s more going on inside. With services including hyperbarics, red light therapy, massage, and strength and conditioning training throughout the week, this man’s biometric data testing reflects that of someone in his 40s. Celebrities, too, flock to Benessair for these options. “In the professional sports world we all know about the benefits of hyperbaric, but what they don’t teach you is it’s just as important where you get your hyperbaric treatments,” says Derek Barnett, defensive end for the Philadelphia Eagles. “I only choose the very best at Benessair Health.” With Benessair, Bordinko is able to make reaching a person’s optimal health possible for anyone willing to do the work. “We haven’t just stopped the aging process, but turned it around. We show people ways to prevent new diseases from occurring and to make a real measurable change in how they feel every single day,” Bordinko says. “We’re turning back the clock on a lot of people.” “Benessair is my secret weapon for recovery and healing,” says Michael J. Breus, Ph.D., who is the celebrity known as “The Sleep Doctor.” “When my crazy life takes a toll, this is where I go to get the training, bodywork, and the newest valid treatments for my health and longevity.” Benessair.com

Want to see a real, lifelong positive change in your health? Dr. Carrie Bordinko says it all starts with the basics before proceeding with more advanced, specific options. “It’s really more about discipline than anything else,” she says.
HERE’S HOW TO GET STARTED: • Be honest about what goes into your body, count everything, even when you really don’t want to. • Actually measure what you are counting. Keep a food scale handy. No guessing. • Just weigh yourself once a week, and if possible, use a body composition scale. • Set realistic goals for body changes. Losing one pound a week means real fat loss and less chances for rebound weight gain. • Lastly, find a friend to take this journey with you. Having someone else you can lean on is priceless.

GREENER GREENS The WM Phoenix Open Returns With a Lineup of New Amenities, a FirstRate Concert Series, and an Unprecedented Talent Pool
The Greatest Show on Grass returns from Feb. 6-12 at the TPC Scottsdale as the WM Phoenix Open emerges bigger and better than ever with new amenities to enhance the fan experience, a top-notch music lineup, and an unprecedented competitive commitment from the PGA TOUR’s top 20 players from its Player Impact Program. Along with an elevated prize purse of $20 million—that’s more than double last year’s purse—the tournament joins 12 others on the tour with this kind of commitment, which will draw a player talent and notoriety pool that also promises to be unprecedented. Having debuted in 1932, the tournament is in its 88th year, making it the fifth oldest on the PGA TOUR. The inclusive and more laid-back vibe is one reason why it is known as “The People’s Open,” in addition to drawing hundreds of thousands of attendees over the weeklong event. “It has the largest attendance of any event on the tour, so ‘The People’s Open’ is really a perfect phrase for our tournament,” says WM Phoenix Open Tournament Chairman Pat Williams. “You’re going to get access to great golf shots, great people watching, and to have that many people come out, it's truly a tournament for everyone.” In fact, with the caliber of golfers, concerts by high-profile music artists, and an
energetic party atmosphere—especially at the famous 16th Hole—it has become a bucket list item for many golf fans. For a single-day event, Williams estimates that perhaps other than the Kentucky Derby or NASCAR’s Indianapolis 500, there are likely no more fans gathered to watch an event in a single spot than on the Saturday of the Open. And the new features were created to make that overall fan experience even that much more memorable. Here’s what fans can expect to see.
FAN ZONE Double in size from last year’s space, the Fan Zone now boasts two giant video boards on each end, giving attendees more room to gather, mingle, and enjoy food and beverages while not missing any of the action.
MERCHANDISE TENT Located near the new Fan Zone, this also will be bigger and better than last year, going from 5,000 to 25,000 square feet. There will be more shirts, accessories, and mementos, and more room for guests to shop and browse. This represents a consolidation of small tents that were located on the premises, creating a centralized, giant one-stop-shop experience. CONTINUED >

WATER BOTTLE STATIONS Bring your own water bottle or buy one from the new Merchandise Tent and fill it up at one of the new water bottle stations scattered throughout the site, including on either side of the Fan Zone. This makes it easy for fans to stay hydrated in the sun while sipping on beer, wine, or cocktails, without having to pay for a bottle of water. “Having the water stations around the course is also an effort to support sustainability,” Williams says.
NEW ENTRANCE In preparation for the future DraftKings Sports Bar and Restaurant that’s under construction for 2024, a temporary new entrance will be in the same area as previous years but in a slightly different format with a new pathway. What’s not new but is noteworthy?
THE FAIRWAY HOUSE At the 12th Hole, this lesser-known venue is open to general admission fans and offers a comfortable shaded area that offers a great view of the 12th and 13th holes. Spectators can relax, have a seat, and grab a beverage and snack while catching the action. “It’s a hidden gem located in a spot on a hill, so it’s great for viewing the corridor down to the 12th hole,” Williams says. “It’s a great spot for fans to sit for a moment, an hour, or an afternoon.”
CHARITY The open and tournament host The Thunderbirds raise money for Arizona charities, most of which provide programs that benefit youth. The 2022 WM Phoenix Open raised nearly $10.5 million for charity, and The Thunderbirds have raised more than $176 million in the tournament’s history. WMPhoenixOpen.com
THE MUSIC LINEUP THIS YEAR FEATURES: Concert in the Coliseum Feb. 4: The second annual Concert in the Coliseum, held on the famous 16th Hole, features Maroon 5 and Walker Hayes. CECILIA BERKLEY CREATES A UNIQUE DESTINATION
ARTICLE BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY CARL SCHULTZ

Cecilia Berkley Holistic Spa The second you step over the threshold, you know you’re someplace unique. There’s a calmness about the space that is Cecilia Berkley Holistic Spa—which is exactly what owner Cecilia Berkley intended. “From the moment you walk in, you are cared for,” she explains. “If you’re in my space, you’re cared for.” It’s an intentionally nurturing and relaxing space that Berkley has cultivated. She aims to help people pause and recharge both their body and mind. She knows firsthand how needed that is. Years ago, Berkley was a local television personality and the owner of a modeling agency. She was working constantly and pushing herself to the limit. A health crisis led her to realize that she needed to change her life. After dedicating herself to learning and researching how to nourish and care for her own body, she realized she wanted to be an intuitive holistic wellness coach who looks at and addresses all aspects of a person’s health. She became a certified holistic practitioner, and then also studied skin care, adding licensed holistic aesthetician to her credentials. Then, putting everything together and taking an approach to beauty that combined her expertise in both skin care and wellness, she opened Cecilia Berkley Holistic Spa. Today, Berkley offers head-to-toe holistic healing services based in science, including facials, back treatments, skin care and wellness consultations, waxing, nutrition, massage, coaching, and more. She is also one of the few with a coveted OxyLight facial machine. Whichever service clients pick, they are pampered throughout their entire experience. Berkley, also the founder and CEO of Corazon Organic Skincare, relocated her practice to North Scottsdale in late 2021. She has both a loyal local following and a national one—including numerous celebrities who come to Arizona just for her treatments. “I’m here to help you feel better than when you came in, and I always exceed expectations,” she says. “This has been a journey. I am, for sure, without a doubt, doing my calling.” CeciliaHolisticSpa.com

A Passion for Pilates T H E F I R M B O DY P I L AT E S TRAINING CENTER HAS S O M E T H I N G F O R E V E RY B O DY
Fitness expert and entrepreneur Jodi Melton was introduced to Pilates 25 years ago—and never looked back. “Pilates is my passion and such a versatile form of exercise,” she says. “It can be adapted for virtually anyone’s individual needs.” Melton has worked with everyone from professional athletes and actors to pregnant moms, those experiencing major health issues, and seniors looking to gain strength. Taking her expertise and love of Pilates, she opened The Firm Body Pilates Training Center in Scottsdale in late 2020. The studio has continually grown since then, offering a variety of Pilates classes and programs. In addition to her exercise clients, Melton, who is a certified Pilates instructor trainer through PhysicalMind Institute, also trains the next generation of Pilates instructors at her studio. “Our Pilates studio is a beautiful, warm, and comforting place to be,” she says. “We train and employ only top-qualified instructors. We have a superior line of various types of Pilates equipment, and we purposefully keep our group classes small. In doing this, we can give individual attention to detail and form. Instructors can help clients increase their strength, alignment, balance, posture, flexibility, and mobility, among other things.”
The Firm Body Pilates Training Center offers private lessons and small classes for all levels. “Pilates is so popular because it is so adaptable,” Melton continues. “You can adjust the program to get the intensity that you want. Pilates works toward functional fitness—the ability to have the strength, balance, and flexibility that allows one to move through daily life tasks with ease.” Pilates can be a training vehicle for elite athletes, as well. “It provides core strength, flexibility, balance, uniform development, and efficient movement patterns, which are all highly relevant for athletes,” Melton says. “It protects them against injury because it emphasizes developing core strength to stabilize the trunk and protect the back.” With New Year’s resolutions on everyone’s minds, Melton encourages locals to consider adding Pilates to their 2023 to-do list. “New Year’s resolutions are often about physical wellness and improving our health,” she says. “Sometimes it is just a matter of being exposed to different physical activities and training until you find the right fit. For many, Pilates can be that fit.” TheFirmBodyPilates.com

Exploring
MONTEREY COUNTY A stunning coastline, storybook-looking villages, wineries, and so much more are the hallmarks of picturesque Monterey County, California. Getting to Monterey is easy—it’s just a short 1.5-hour flight from Phoenix into Monterey Regional Airport, a small, well-run locale where you’ll often have your bag and be on your way 15 minutes after landing (unless you stop to eat at Woody’s At The Airport, a destination in its own right … but more on that later). You can see the ocean from the airport, and that’s just the beginning of this destination’s striking welcome. Monterey (SeeMonterey.com) sits about 5.5 hours north of Los Angeles and just under three hours from San Francisco on California’s coast, and there is plenty to explore and experience here.
EXPLORE Wander Through Carmel-by-the-Sea This charming village by the sea is filled with storybook architecture, cute shops, wine-tasting rooms, art galleries, and restaurants. The main street—Ocean Avenue—leads to Carmel Beach, which offers both soft sand and the perfect place to catch a sunset. CONTINUED >

Take in Pebble Beach Those who love golf will enjoy Pebble Beach Resorts’ world-renowned golf courses. But even those who don’t want to hit the links will enjoy the destination. There’s also a visitor center and shops, as well as several restaurants where you can enjoy a great meal and a great view.
Carmel Valley Ranch
Drive the 17-Mile Drive To get to Pebble Beach you can drive along the 17-Mile Drive. There are gates at each end of the drive, and once through (there’s a small fee, reimbursed with purchases in the restaurants), you’ll follow a red-dotted line that leads the way through changing scenery, including giant trees, open beach views, and more. There are stops along the way, including at the Lone Cypress tree.
NOT-TO-MISS EXPERIENCES Go Wine Tasting Monterey County is one of the largest wine-growing regions in California. There’s a wine trail of tasting rooms in Carmel-by-the-Sea (make sure to stop by Dawn’s Dream) as well as other locales, and numerous wineries to visit in the region itself. Dine at Woody’s At The Airport As chef Tim Wood—of Carmel Valley Ranch and Bernardus fame—jokes, “We’re a restaurant with an airport attached.” Indeed Woody’s, Chef Wood’s restaurant at Monterey Regional Airport, is both a popular local hangout and a favorite of travelers. Make sure to stop by for a meal and a drink.
Promesa Carmel Pebble Beach
Drive a Classic Car Along the Coast Monterey Touring Vehicles is a unique locale, offering a selection of iconic classic and vintage cars for rent, starting at just a half day. Visit Carmel Valley Ranch This luxurious, 500-acre destination not only offers a place to stay but also a variety of activities—including golf, a farm tour, biking, and more, as well as a topnotch restaurant on-site. Relax & Rejuvenate Stop by a spa. There are plenty in the area. I loved Vista Blue Spa at Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa (check out the view from the outdoor area!). Explore Life in and Under the Sea If the kids are in tow, make sure to add a stop at the renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium to your list. There are more than 35,000 creatures on view.

Scottsdale Fashion Square: The Next Phase THE UPCOMING RENOVATION ONCE AGAIN REDEFINES LUXURY
Main valet
ARTICLE BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN | RENDERINGS COURTESY MACERICH/SCOTTSDALE FASHION SQUARE
In 2018, Scottsdale Fashion Square launched its spectacular luxury wing. Now, the second phase of is underway. Beginning next month, the south wing—which is anchored by Nordstrom—will undergo an extensive interior and exterior renovation. Also in the plans are a striking arrival area, complete with luxury valet service, at the property’s most active entrance, two-story storefronts and exterior-facing retail buildings at the south entrance, and a porte cochere that will incorporate up to five destination restaurants. The interior design will include new finishes, flooring, custom light fixtures, furnishings, and more. Macerich aims to have “properties with purpose,” which mean more uses for more people, according to the company. To that end, other upcoming additions to Fashion Square include the high-end fitness and wellness destination Life Time at Scottsdale Fashion Square and the Caesars Republic Scottsdale boutique hotel. “Scottsdale Fashion Square is already the region’s undisputed luxury leader, and the tremendous success of our luxury wing demonstrates the strong appetite among retailers and shoppers for even more high-end experiences throughout this top-performing property. This multi-phased project is part of Macerich’s long-term strategy, as well as the center’s own history, of continually reinvesting in our irreplaceable retail destinations,” says Tom O’Hern, CEO of Macerich. Future plans for the locale, which currently showcases more than 240 shops and restaurants, include adding more mixed-use elements on a seven-acre parcel immediately north of the mall that reaches from Goldwater Boulevard to Scottsdale Road. The plan will incorporate high-end residential units, class-A office space, and hospitality uses. FashionSquare.com
