Feeling Grateful
November 2023 PUBLISHER

Michelle Glicksman | michelle.glicksman@citylifestyle.com
I’m not sure how November snuck up so fast, but here it is. Seriously, I feel like it was just yesterday that I was looking ahead to 2023! Now, it’s just about time to close out the year. Instead of making November the month that’s just all about Thanksgiving, the holiday, I like to look at November as the month of reflection. Spurred on by the season, I find it’s the perfect time to take a moment to pause during the craziness of daily life—yes, I’m looking at you carpools, cooking meals, juggling appointments, meeting deadlines, and helping with homework—reflect, and make it a point to acknowledge all the things for which I’m grateful. Of course, my family and friends top that list. If this November you, too, take a moment to reflect, I hope you find people and circumstances for which you are thankful. In this issue we incorporated the theme of gratitude and giving back into our pages. Aren’t there so many amazing people in our community?! Read all about how they are making an impact. Speaking of grateful, I am also grateful to all of you who read the words on these pages, share our stories with us, and support our amazing advertisers. Have a great month! Yours,

letter from the PUBLISHER
With all that’s going on in the world these days, it’s incredibly important to remind ourselves how much we have and how plentiful our hearts are. Each night when we put our kids to bed, we ask them to tell us three things that were good about their day. Usually it’s, “I got to play with my friends!” or “Lunch was good today!” It’s still making them think about the good things that happened and not what went wrong or what they didn’t get to do. This is the month when we tend to focus on all that we’re thankful for. It can be as simple as I’m thankful that we survived the hottest summer and can finally enjoy the outdoors again. Or maybe you had a major life change this year that made you incredibly thankful. Personally, I’m incredibly thankful for my family; my incredibly supportive friends; this amazing community; and my team behind the scenes, who work so hard each and every day. So as you lay your head to bed tonight, try to think about what three things you’re thankful for today. You might be surprised how great the day actually was. See you around town, Alicia Owner/Publisher

Top 5 Things to Know about Medical Weight Management Tirzepatide Modulates Fat Utilization
Who Can Qualify Anyone who is seeking a more personalized approach to weight management is a good candidate for embarking on a journey towards optimal wellbeing. If a person has that stubborn 10 pounds put on during COVID, is doing everything right with diet and exercise, yet can’t shed those extra pounds, they may well qualify for a weight management program. Those who have higher weight loss goals may also benefit from a personalized solution to assist in their wellness journey.
Semaglutide Regulates Appetite This medication has been used for over 15 years to treat diabetes, but then it had an amazing side effect: weight loss. Semaglutide works by mimicking the hormone in the body that regulates blood sugar levels and appetite. This means that when Semaglutide is taken, it can help reduce feelings of hunger, leading to less food intake and weight loss. It has been shown to be particularly helpful for those who have struggled with losing weight through other methods.
Another innovative medical option is Tirzepatide, which activates 2 receptors through hormone stimulation. This not only offers the benefit of suppressing one’s appetite, it regulates glucose and blood sugar levels. Tirzepatide can also assist with modifying how the body utilizes fat by increasing energy expenditure.
Average Amount of Weight Loss Each person is different and loses weight at varying rates. Clinical trials have shown participants to lose from 5% up to 20% of their baseline body weight.
Benefits of Medical Weight Management When managed right, with an experienced medical team that adjusts dosage specific to you, benefits may include: • Loss of weight • Increased energy • Enhanced sleep • Improved blood pressure • Better self-confidence • Less joint pain

Pumpkin Ravioli & Dungeness Crab at STK Steakhouse
The Flavors of Fall Where to Enjoy a Cornucopia of All Things Edible This Autumn ARTICLE BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED Hungry for something sensationally seasonal? Local restaurants have diners covered with creative and craveable dishes that celebrate the unmistakable flavors of fall. Chief among the signature ingredients this season is pumpkin. Z’Tejas (ZTejas.com) recently debuted Pumpkin Enchiladas ($18). The recipe begins with a smoked chicken that has been cooked slowly to keep it juicy. It is mixed with freshly made pumpkin enchilada sauce, wrapped in a flour tortilla, and then smothered with additional pumpkin enchilada sauce and topped with lime-infused cream and roasted pepitas.
STK Steakhouse (STKSteakhouse.com) pairs the gorgeous orange gourd with shellfish, creating a Pumpkin Ravioli & Dungeness Crab ($59) dish with sage, butter, champagne, confit mushrooms, pecorino, a prosciutto crisp, and pine nuts. At Snooze An A.M. Eatery (SnoozeEatery.com), nearly every section of the menu is infused with pumpkin—or its fall counterpart, the sweet potato. There are Pumpkin Pecan Pie Pancakes ($11.25) with vanilla cream cheese, caramel sauce, and candied pecans; a Sweet Potato Veggie Smash ($12.25) with avocado, asparagus, onions, and mushrooms; a Pumpkin Latte ($6.25) with CONTINUED >

house-made pumpkin syrup; and a Pumpkin Martini ($10.75) made with Tito’s Handmade Vodka, pumpkin syrup, and oat milk. Snooze is not alone in sweet pumpkin treats and drinks. Both Streets of New York (StreetsOfNewYork.com) and Kona Grill (KonaGrill.com) have seasonal desserts in a Pumpkin Mousse Cheesecake ($9) with a graham cracker crust and Pumpkin Pie ($12) with whipped cream, pepitas, caramel sauce, cinnamon, and orange zest, respectively, and Over Easy (EatAtOverEasy.com) is featuring an Iced Pumpkin Chai ($8.89) with a choice of vanilla vodka or cinnamon whiskey. Both root vegetables and squash also shine this season. Tommy Bahama Restaurant & Bar (TommyBahama.com) has a mouthwatering Spaghetti Squash ($26) entree. To make, the spaghetti squash is roasted and then sauteed with organic broccoli florets, Campari tomatoes, roasted cipollini onions, roasted mushrooms, and sweet corn salsa before being deglazed with lemon Parmesan broth with garlic butter folded in. Once plated, it is topped with fresh basil chiffonade, pumpkin seed gremolata, Aleppo chilies, and freshly grated Grana Padano. At 32 Shea (32Shea.com), the seasonal Squash Risotto With Scallops ($22) sells out almost nightly. It is a celebration of saffronand sage-infused arborio rice, caramelized roasted butternut and acorn squash, brown butter leeks, and perfectly seared scallops. Known for its palate-pleasing specialties that change with each season, of course, LON’s at The Hermosa Inn (HermosaInn. com) has something special as well in its Warm Roasted Delicata Squash ($16), which is paired with bacon lardons, frisee, micro arugula, tart cherries, Meyer lemon Crow’s Dairy quark (a cross between yogurt and
cottage cheese), and mesquite vinaigrette made using Queen Creek Olive Oil. And at Persepshen (PersepshenArizona. com), do not miss the Acorn Squash ($17), which is paired with za’atar spice and a Calabrian chili vinaigrette, and then finished with toasted pepitas. Moving on to root vegetables, ZINGARA Coffee Shop, Bespoke Market and Wine Bar (ZINGARAMarket.com) features an earthy, robust dish of Roasted Beets ($13) for the season. They are paired with lemon, mint, dill, and a Middle Eastern yogurt cheese called labneh before being topped with candied walnuts, which add a delicious crunch. And over at Arboleda (ArboledaAZ. com)? They make the rustic root drinkable with their Up-Beet ($18). This vibrant cocktail combines the sweetness of beets, the herbal notes of aloe liquor, and the richness of almond orgeat syrup with Tequila Corrido Reposado. Prefer apples and spice this time of year? The Sicilian Baker (TheSicilianBaker. com) just added an Apple Cinnamon Cannoli ($6 each or $35 for a six-pack) to its menu. Inside the shell, expect sweet, spiced apple cinnamon ricotta cream. Outside, the treat is topped with freshly chopped spiced apples and powdered sugar. Famous 48 (Famous48.com) also brought back its popular Bourbon Crumble ($12.50), which features warm bourbon-spiked apples spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, topped with a crispy golden crumble coating, and finished with vanilla bean ice cream, a caramel drizzle, and toasty almonds. Bonus: Famous 48 also has savory fall taste buds coverage, as well, with its Skillet Cornbread ($11.50), which is paired with sides of local honey and homemade apple butter. CONTINUED >

Both the Grey Hen Rx at Century Grand (CenturyGrandPHX.com) and B&B Cocktail Lounge (BourbonAndBones.com) are also getting into the seasonal spirit with inspired offerings. At Grey Hen Rx, guests can indulge with the Hero du Monde ($18), which is the ultimate twist on an espresso martini. It blends Hardy Legend 1863 Cognac, Plantation O.F.T.D. Blended Rum, Caffè Borghetti Espresso Liqueur, and Mr. Black Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur with chicory, tamarind, cacao malted milk, and a whole egg to create a silky texture. B&B boasts a warming B&B House Manhattan ($22) with Grade A maple syrup, Woodford Reserve Bourbon, Cinzano 1757, and Blackstrap Bitters. Finally, there is Francine (FrancineRestaurant.com), which boasts an assortment of filling, rustic fall offerings. Among the most popular is its Daube Provencal ($18), which is much like a beef stew, except it uses meltin-your-mouth short ribs and is served over luscious potato gnocchi.

For These Nonprofits, Giving is a Year-Round Mission
This may be the month highlighted by a day of giving thanks. But for those served by thousands of local nonprofit organizations, being grateful is a sentiment felt year-round. Countless Arizonans are able to experience life with dignity, comfort, safety, optimism, and so much more thanks to the Valley’s nearly 18,000 nonprofits, according to Cause IQ , a resource of web-based tools for nonprofits and companies serving nonprofit clients. It is because of these organizations that many underserved and often forgotten populations and individuals are able to not only survive but also truly live a life with a quality that they may not have the opportunity to otherwise. And by the nature of their nonprofit status, these organizations rely heavily on the kindness, generosity, and time of others to ensure their mission is carried out and assistance reaches the communities they aim to serve. If you’re looking to support a cause, here are a few noteworthy organizations that would be very grateful.
The Joy Bus Diner Every cent generated from this nonprofit restaurant supports The Joy Bus, which delivers chef-inspired meals and caring conversations to cancer patients across the Valley. Founder/ chef Jennifer Caraway created the organization in honor of her friend Joy, who had battled and ultimately succumbed to ovarian cancer. Caraway realized the healing power of healthy, hand-delivered meals, a friendly face, a sympathetic ear, and a bit of cheer. A team of respected local chefs also contribute their talents to the cause.

Virtuous Software
Founded by 11-year-old Paradise Valley resident Anaik Sachdev, Loving Library raises funds to provide people in need with books, journals, and other tools to improve their mental health and well-being. Launched during the height of the pandemic, the nonprofit has helped to deliver more than 12,000 books to underserved communities like pediatric hospital patients, abuse victims, NICU families, refugee families, and more. Today, it has grown to include chapters throughout Arizona, California, Texas, and the United Kingdom.
Founded by BASIS Scottsdale high school senior Punarvash Mitta, KidsTae utilizes the virtues and principles Mitta picked up through years of martial arts participation to assist youths in need. Mitta’s nonprofit helps provide virtual and in-person classes that focus on fun martial arts activities while integrating stretching, meditation, and mental relief to help kids and teens de-stress. Over the past year, KidsTae has raised roughly $2,000 for underprivileged martial artists in less developed countries, providing shoes, mats, and other materials.

Free Arts for Abused Children of Arizona
TigerMountain Foundation
UMOM New Day Centers
Through programs, mentorships, and other empowerment tools, Free Arts for Abused Children of Arizona transforms children’s trauma to resilience through the arts. Adult volunteer mentors, teaching artists, and staff are trained to connect with children who have experienced abuse, neglect, and/ or homelessness and introduce them to the healing, empowering, and freeing power that the arts can provide. This is done through camps, professional artists series, partnerships with local arts and cultural organizations, and family programming.
This co-op garden organization harnesses the power of community gardens and other agri-landscaping initiatives in its twofold mission. Through the building of flourishing gardens, the foundation operates in at-risk areas and teaches practical life skills to youth, adults, and seniors, keeping them out of jail. In addition to empowering economically disadvantaged participants with job skills, these gardens also address the nutrition scarcity in food deserts around the Valley while enhancing neighborhood revitalization and beautification.
For nearly 60 years, this organization has been an innovative provider of shelter, housing, and services for people experiencing homelessness. Every night, UMOM provides safe shelter and supportive resources for nearly 700 individuals, composed of families and single women, at its East Phoenix campus, plus hundreds of affordable housing units across the Valley. Its Homegrown Training program and Helpings Cafe onsite restaurant and catering provide barista and culinary training to UMOM residents, giving them practical skill sets to help them gain employment.

He’s known as “Dr. Scottsdale®,” and his work is viewed around the world—not only because of his impact, but because board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Carlos Mata is also social media famous, with almost 600,000 followers on Instagram alone, which he uses to educate people about the field and procedures. But while he enjoys providing the services he does through his Natural Results Plastic Surgery practice in Scottsdale—which includes everything from nonsurgical medspa options to traditional plastic surgery procedures such as facial rejuvenation, breast procedures, and body contouring, and he draws patients from all over the United States—he’s not always at that location. Sometimes he’s in Laos, or Ecuador, or Guatemala, or Mexico, or Africa. His other passion, he explains, is going on medical missions around the world.
HELPING AROUND THE WORLD “When you go on these mission trips, there are people who will walk three or four days to see you,” he says. “Typically, I’ll do burn scars, hand surgery, cleft lips and cleft palates, breast reconstruction from breast cancer, genetic issues—anything I can to help. I pretty much operate from head to toe, which is a lot, but I do whatever I can to the best of my abilities, and if I can’t do something, I’ll tell [the patient] it’s not something I’m comfortable with. But I do try my best to help as much as I can.” Dr. Mata began doing medical missions when he was still in school. He was in his last year of medical training when a professor asked if anyone wanted to go on a medical mission trip. Others said they couldn’t go—so Dr. Mata said he would.
Once there, he was hooked. “If I could be on a medical mission trip every other week, I’d go,” Dr. Mata says. “But obviously, my wife and kids and staff wouldn’t like that.” His wife, Janneth, and his children Jordan, 6, and Jayden, 4, are also the “reasons I bust my butt every day,” he says.
CHOOSING HIS SPECIALTY When Dr. Mata first began medical school, he had thought he wanted to specialize in pediatrics. Then, “I saw my first lecture about wound healing and it was given by a plastic surgeon, and she showed me the spectrum of what plastic surgery really is,” he shares. “And then I saw a cleft lip.” While the surgeries he performs during the missions aren’t life or death, they are often life-changing. “When it’s a cleft lip, you’re fixing their appearance and also their function. They can’t talk, eat, and sometimes can’t breathe right. So, you’re fixing all of these things, but you’re also fixing how they look,” he explains. To date, Dr. Mata estimates he’s been on about 12 mission trips, returning to some of the locations more than once. While he doesn’t work with any specific organizations, “people find me,” he says. “I don’t actively look for these [trips], but people find me. My friends know I do this, and if someone asks them and they can’t fill the spot, they refer me, too.” For Dr. Mata, one of the most interesting aspects of the trips is also the most difficult. But I do try my best to help as much as I can.” “I think the most unique aspect of mission work is that you have no idea who is going to show up and with what problems,” he says. And while that’s interesting and keeps him on his toes, it also means that it sometimes requires him to say that he’s unable to help. There are so many people to help and only so many hours, and sometimes he would need the assistance of another surgeon or specialist in order to perform what he deems as needed. “Those are the decisions that we have to make. If we have enough time, we try to do everyone, but [sometimes we can’t]. It’s probably one of the hardest things we do as a doctor on these trips,” he says.
BACK AT HOME Back at home in Scottsdale, Dr. Mata’s practice is thriving. He had moved to the Valley in 2014 and began working in the field, opening his own practice, Natural Results Plastic Surgery, in 2017. Today, more than 40 to 50 percent of his patients travel to see him from other states, drawn by the results he provides. “Our job at Natural Results is to help people be their own kind of beautiful,” he explains. “Everyone’s idea of beauty is different. It’s all about what you think, not what your partner thinks, not what society thinks, but what you think will make you feel beautiful for you.” To that end, Dr. Mata is passionate about connecting with and teaching his patients. His thriving Instagram presence is where
he posts information about different procedures, which he says he does in order to truly educate people about the process. “Whether they pick me or someone else is fine, but at least educate yourself about what you’re walking into,” he urges people considering any procedure. His guidance and expertise is so popular that Natural Results, which is currently in a 7,000-square-foot building with its own in-house operating suites, is moving into a 17,000-squarefoot, two-story location just a few buildings over, at Scottsdale Road and Thompson Peak Parkway. The space is currently being built out, and the move will take place at the end of 2024 or the beginning of 2025. Dr. Mata also recently hired another board-certified plastic surgeon—Dr. Martin Benjamin—to join the practice.
WHEN HE’S NOT AT WORK OR AWAY While Dr. Mata is busy with work, mission trips, and his family, he also makes time to head to the gym daily. He’s there every morning between 4:30 and 6:30 a.m., saying that he’d “rather sacrifice some of my sleep than time with my wife and kids or with work.” As for one thing that patients might be surprised to learn about him? “I think the thing that surprises most people is that I’m fluent in Spanish and that I was in the military. Yes, I was Major Mata, chief of plastic surgery at Eglin Air Force Base.” NaturalResultsAZ.com

The Valley may not be much for nature’s fall colors, but Mother Nature is putting on a show elsewhere around the country. Some of these spots are still perfect for this year, while others are past their peak but perfect for next year’s planning. Here are some prime locales—and places to stay—for viewing stunning foliage.
COLORADO Denver offers one of the longest periods of fall colors of any city in the country, as the glowing gold leaves of the aspen tree make for stunning fall foliage. A stay at The Brown Palace Hotel & Spa—known as “the Grand Dame of Denver”—is a perfect home base. The iconic Mile High City landmark is centrally located in the heart of downtown. BrownPalace.com At 9,600 feet above sea level, the charming and historic town of Breckenridge is a perfect place to put on your radar for next year—photographers from all over the world travel to the area in autumn to capture the colorful foliage of the aspen trees set against the majestic backdrop of the towering peaks. The Berkshires is a popular destination for summer travel, but for those in the know, it’s also a beautiful place to visit for New England’s picturesque fall foliage. You can also hike October Mountain, Bear Mountain Trail, or Mount Greylock (which is Massachusetts’ tallest mountain and offers breathtaking views overlooking five states). The area is also famous for its Route 7 proximity, a stretch of road that has been captured endlessly for many a fall photo shoot. Here, the hideaway Wheatleigh Hotel, the smallest of the Leading Hotels of the World, is the perfect place to view the season’s change in a glamorous setting. Wheatleigh.com

At 19, the world was wide open before her, ready to be explored and embraced. But after a dune buggy accident, Cat Kozuch was told she would have to do that from a wheelchair for the rest of her life. In 2008, Kozuch was in Rocky Point when the driver of the dune buggy in which she was a passenger lost control. The vehicle flipped, sending her headfirst into the sand. On top of that, Kozuch’s seat belt malfunctioned, causing her body to slam in such a way that it crushed two of her middle vertebrae. She lay on her broken back for 24 hours before being airlifted to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix. After undergoing surgery, doctors informed Kozuch that she was paralyzed from the chest down and would never walk again. However, she had other ideas. “I never believed I would never walk again,” Kozuch recalls of that day. “Everyone thought I was crazy. I was like, ‘No I’m going to walk out of here.’” Three months later, on her final day at Barrow Neurological Institute, she did just that. “I ended up walking out of that hospital slower than a turtle, with a walker … but I reached my goal,” Kozuch says. “My experience is based on being in a hospital, but it can be used in any environment where there’s a child. That’s the most beautiful part of the bear.” Doctors called her a medical miracle, baffled by how her nerves were able to grow back so fast, if at all. Kozuch reminds herself of this daily. The combination of will, determination, and strength she mustered over those painful months is an intangible she aims to pass on to others with Believe a Buddy, her business venture that features Winston, an adorable plush bear that delivers inspirational affirmations. Geared toward children ages 3 and older, Winston comes equipped with 52 heart-shaped cards, each one printed with a specific message of positivity that’s placed in the heart-shaped space in the bear’s belly. Kozuch designed Believe a Buddy to present one affirmation for every week of the year. However, some owners choose a new one more often or even daily, depending on what they are going through at the time. There are no electronics or high-tech involved. “I wanted it to be hospital-friendly, to be quiet so you can say the affirmation out loud,” Kozuch says. The concept of using a bear as the bearer of positivity originated from Kozuch’s long hospital stay. Her father traveled often for work, and every time he returned home to Arizona, he brought Kozuch a new teddy bear. Her mother pinned every bear around a whiteboard that bore the affirmation Kozuch maintained since she was told she would never walk again: “Cat will walk out of here! … Duh!” In addition to repeating this daily, Kozuch funneled her frustration into willing her body to move. She started with the big toe on her left foot, channeling Uma Thurman’s character in Kill Bill, commanding, “Big toe, move!” One day, it did. But the doctors were not impressed. They attributed it to a random twitch. However, she
knew better and kept practicing. After several days, she could wave and wiggle her toes on both feet. Eventually, the rest of her lower body followed, culminating in taking those steps out of Barrow. Fast-forward 15 years, with Kozuch having a successful career in medical sales. The memories of those bears surrounding the whiteboard affirmation returned as strong as ever, and Believe a Buddy was born. Kozuch made children the focus in an effort to instill empowerment at an early age. “You want to ingrain that in their minds, subconscious, and souls, so they can carry that out their entire life,” she says. Kozuch takes Winston into classrooms and gives presentations to students and their teachers, who incorporate the bear into the routine by having one child choose an affirmation for the class at the start of the day. Daily, she hears stories from customers whose lives have been changed by her bear. Once, a little girl cut her toe while at a pool party. Her older sister suggested they grab their buddy bear and do the “I am healthy” affirmation so she could get better. There’s also the mother who was going to teach her daughter how to turn her bike around while riding it. When the daughter informed her mom that she could do it and the mom asked how, she responded, “Remember, Mom, Believe a Buddy said I can do anything.” “My experience is based on being in a hospital, but it can be used in any environment where there’s a child. That’s the most beautiful part of the bear,” Kozuch says. “Believe in yourself and the rest will follow.” BelieveABuddy.com

The Flower Garage A Scottsdale Local Turns a Passion for Flowers Into a Business
48
M AK E R’S ST U D IO | LOCAL S E RVI CE S
Dani Christakos grew up with a Dutch father who took them to Holland every summer. “I was always surrounded by beautiful flowers,” says Christakos. “They are always just something that bring me so much joy.” So it seems natural that when her oldest of three kids left for college, she pursued her dream of opening a floral studio. The Flower Garage launched as a place for other flower lovers to gather, learn a new skill, and take home “sunshine in a bouquet.”
THE PASSION BECOMES A BUSINESS After being a stay-at-home mom for 17 years while raising three kids with her high school sweetheart, Christakos began building out her dream. “I am a self-taught florist,” she explains. “While I’ve done some formal training, I always felt what I was learning was something I already knew. Some of the best florists in the world are self-taught.” Today, she loves continuing her floral education by traveling the country and seeing what else is out there. “I love educating myself with lessons from Sarah Campbell, a famous floral teacher who recently appeared on the Netflix show The Big Flower Fight. She has great energy, and I always learn something new from her!”
HOW THE FLOWER GARAGE DIFFERS FROM OTHER FLORISTS The Flower Garage is a custom florist. There are no premade arrangements sitting on shelves or in buckets of water. Instead, Christakos creates a unique arrangement for every client. “All you do is choose the size, and we create something fabulous,” explains Christakos. With just 24 hours’ notice, you can pick up your custom arrangement. CONTINUED >

The Flower Garage is also known for its floral classes. “Classes are what started our business,” says Christakos. “We love teaching people how to make flower arrangements. We teach public classes where you can register with a friend or come alone. We also rent the studio out for private classes with at least 10 people.” Christakos focuses each class on the season. So, you can make your Thanksgiving table centerpiece in November or a wreath in December. They also offer special events throughout the holiday season.
TIPS FOR AN IDEAL THANKSGIVING CENTERPIECE With the holidays approaching, everyone is thinking about entertaining—and entertaining often includes a beautiful bouquet. Christakos says that this year, both bold and neutral are trending. Do what feels best for your home, but don’t be afraid to go with bold fall colors. She also recommends mixing dried flowers with fresh ones to make a statement. “I love to mix the two, especially in our neutral color palettes,” she says. If choosing a table centerpiece, Christakos suggests using a low-lying tablescape. “You always want to ensure the flowers do not block you so you can see the person across from you!”

FLOWERS MAKE A GREAT HOSTESS GIFT When going to holiday parties, it’s always thoughtful to take a gift. The Flower Garage can help you create the ideal bouquet to take with you. Christakos reminds customers to explain their needs when they order. She recommends arrangements made in floral foam if you’re taking the arrangement to a party. “They travel easily, and you will not be covered in water by the time you arrive,” she explains. Another great idea for a gift bouquet or arrangement is to incorporate succulents in the design. “That way,” says Christakos, “they have a keepsake from you, and you can use the succulents long after the arrangement has passed.”
THE FLOWER GARAGE IS A COMMUNITY MEETING PLACE Christakos loves seeing her vision come to life and takes great pride in every custom arrangement or bouquet she creates. While The Flower Garage also does events, weddings, and in-home installations, she is especially proud of the classes and how they have become a meeting place for the community. “The Flower Garage has become a really special place that people love coming to,” she says. “Everyone leaves really happy and has something beautiful in their hands!” TheAZFlowerGarage.com

300+ 5 STAR RE VIE WS ON WELLNES SLIVING.COM “Great Pilates with Great People: We just started with Firm Body Pilates in preparation for wedding season and it has been an awesome month! We were nervous since we had never done Pilates before but walking into the studio was like a breath of fresh air. The studio is very tranquil and the owner and staff have been the best to work with. After our first session, Jodi introduced herself and really made us feel at home. If you've never tried Pilates before, I would highly recommend coming and trying out their beginner one-on-one sessions!” - MIRANDA B.

Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving or an autumn dinner party, setting a festive table creates the perfect cozy atmosphere. Improvise and use what you have around the house for adding elements to the table. Candlesticks, vases, little pumpkins and gourds, or fall decor you have on hand can make a great centerpiece. Add fresh flowers or dried foliage for that extra layer of texture and color.

ad i t i o n al Table For this classic, traditional look, a plaid throw blanket stands in for a tablecloth to establish a festive base layer. Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. The simple place setting is enhanced with a dried grass accent and brown silk ribbon tied into a bow to add a special touch to your traditional display. CONTINUED >

Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character. Instead of going with the classic white plate, enjoy a pop of color at your outdoor fall garden party with a blue place setting as a nod to the sky. Adding a cloth napkin and cloth placemat is a great way to add texture and more autumn color to your table. If the weather doesn’t cooperate on your day, bring the outdoors in with a lovely indoor garden party dressed up in fall foliage.

Where Health & Wellness Meets Beauty
Serving and Caring for Seniors in Phoenix and the East Valley
What are the benefits of in-home care support?
It is an emotional decision when choosing to receive help in the home due to general aging issues, a progressive disease, or a recent hospitalization. It is the belief that receiving help is “taking away independence.”
A revolutionary device to restore, tone and sculpt the body. • Decrease Cellulite
AT AMADA, WE WANT TO CHALLENGE THE MYTH AND CONSIDER THE BENEFITS:
• Stimulates Collagen Production • Enhance Lymphatic Drainage
• Support in the home keeps independence longer in the home • Peace of mind for other family members • Respite for the primary caregiver • Increases nutrition intake along with maintenance of personal hygiene
• Decrease Aches & Pain • Improve Blood Flow • Increase Muscle Tone • Decrease Inflammation • Great for supporting post-Covid recovery
