One wears practically the same outfit every day—black sport shorts and a black T-shirt with some design on it. That would be my teenage son.
While, like my son, I may gravitate towards my go-to uniform color, I always rejoice when the seasons turn and the new collections are unveiled. It’s the grown-up version of being a kid in a candy store. Today, my son actually asked if my daughter and I would take him shopping tomorrow—he needs some new shirts. While I’m sure he’ll gravitate towards his usual style, we’re hoping to show him some new styles, too. I see hints of possible branching out. Maybe we can get him to match my 70%/30%. Either way, I’m looking forward to shopping and seeing all the new fall styles. So many fun and fabulous items—some of which we even focus on in this issue. As always, our September issue is our Fashion Issue. This year we high lighted some local designers. Get to know them and their designs. We also have a variety of accessories. The other, well, let’s just say she’s a fashion designer and retailer’s dream. That’s my teenage daughter. Me, I’m somewhere in the middle. I’m from New York, so 70% of my ward robe is black. (No, I don’t know why us New Yorkers like to wear black. We just do.) The other 30% I like to try trends and mix it up a bit. My daughter couldn’t wait until we were the same size so we could share clothes. She’s now my height, and not surprisingly, I keep finding my stuff missing … miraculously it shows up in her closet. Some of my shoes may have migrated to that side of the house, too.

The Brain Injury Alliance of Arizona named auctioneer and trau matic brain injury (TBI) survivor Letitia Frye as its 2023 Woman of Courage, and will honor her at its Brainiac Bash on Jan. 14, 2023. Frye suffered the TBI after a car accident while run ning in 2014. The accident influenced Frye's decision to expand her scope to humanitarian and philanthropic endeavors. To date she’s helped raise more than $500 million for charities, worked with Haitian orphanages, Doctors in Hospice, and Make-A-Wish.

On my long road trip this summer I got a chance to visit so many fun places and see lots of people from all walks of life—always a highlight when I travel. It became obvious to me that style is truly unique to each person and their way to express themselves. There are those who always seem cool, casual, with a unique flare, and always look the most comfortable in their skin. Then there are those who are quite bold and like to make a statement. And, of course, some prefer to look put-together and sharp all the time. I will admit, fashion and style aren’t really my strong suit … however, I always admire those who always look great, comfortable, and feel natural. For me, most of the time I stick to the old faithful ensem bles that fit me best. I do try and am always open to advice as I am certainly no fashionista!

“Closets are one of the most detailed rooms of the house and involve a lot of collabo ration between the casework, millwork, architecture, lighting consultants, interiors, and especially the client,” says Meredith Thomson, principal at Candelaria Design Associates, a leading luxury residential and boutique architecture and lifestyle firm. “Lighting is so important because you want to be able to see your clothes without it feeling overdone,” she says. “Getting the task lighting, decorative lighting, and any hidden lighting to work seamlessly is key! Natural light is also tricky. It is always wonderful to have but you also want your privacy!”
And of course, space is also always a consideration.

For 50 years, Barrett-Jackson has brought collector cars to Scottsdale in an auction event that blends the appeal of luxury vehicles and must-see fashion—a combination that ties directly to the childhood memories of Chairman and CEO Craig Jackson.

Established in 1971, Barrett-Jackson began with Jackson’s father, Russ, and fel low car enthusiast and friend, Tom Barrett. The first auction took place next to the Safari Resort, which was located on Scottsdale Road. The event has become a Valley tradition and, in the years since its inception, Barrett-Jackson has grown to include auctions in Palm Beach, California; Las Vegas; and most recently, Houston.

Despite being all about cars, Barrett-Jackson has had its share of exposure in the fashion industry, as well. The com pany has lent cars to a variety of designer and retailer photo shoots over the years, and the must-attend auctions include vendors with a variety of designer wares and fashion collabo rations. In the past, the auctions often had fashion shows, too.
In 2021, Craig worked with General Motors and Neiman Marcus to create a one-of-a-kind Barrett-Jackson GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 that featured a custom interior. The interior is highlighted by two-tone handcrafted leather seats and anodized metal accents, customized Neiman Marcus badging, a bespoke steering wheel, customized running boards, and special entry illumination projection lighting.
Collaborations over the years include a 45th anniversary Barrett-Jackson merchandise collection created with Robert Graham, a limited-edition run of 100 numbered Barrett-Jackson watches inspired by the design of a Bugatti Type 35 in partner ship with Hublot, and a project with REC Watches to create a limited production run of custom Little Red and Green Hornet watches based off two historic experimental Shelby Mustangs in Craig Jackson’s collection. Craig shares that sheet metal from each car’s restoration was used in the production of each watch.
“Fashion and cars go so well together. It’s about making a statement,” Craig shares. “Concours first began in Paris as a blend of fashion and cars—collectors and coachbuilders showcasing their cars in front of the Eiffel Tower, with beauti ful models donning couture dresses.”

“Cars are the ultimate fashion statement. Like a designer dress or handbag, they offer individual expression and often the first impression,” says Carolyn Jackson, Barrett-Jackson’s vice president of brand strategy and chief philanthropy officer, and Craig’s wife. “To this day you see collaborations between high-end manufacturers and high-end designers like Bugatti and Hermès, and Lamborghini and Versace.”

In addition to the company’s long-standing legacy with cars, Barrett-Jackson has been recognized by the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce, receiving the Craig Jackson wearing the Bugatti Hublot watch.
“We have a long history of showcasing a variety of designers throughout our events,” Carolyn says. “Today, in our Exhibitor Marketplace, you can find many incredible exhibitors selling luxury designer brands such as Chanel, Hermès, and Louis Vuitton. We also feature high-end jewelers such as E.D. Marshall Jewelers and Winston Estate Jewelry.”
Craig says that the yearly auction held in Scottsdale is a fun social and lifestyle event for all, even if an attendee doesn’t consider themselves a “car person.” Each year, the event draws guests from around the world. Sales in 2022 surpassed a record-breaking $203 mil lion. Features of the event include the invitation-only Opening Night Gala, which is one of the hottest events in Scottsdale each January and sets the stage for the entire week. “It is all about art,” adds Craig. “The lines of clothes, the lines of cars. I think that is why cars of the past and the mod ern one-off cars still have that artistic appeal. I think that is why enthusiasts today really enjoy Resto-Mods because of the classic design but with modern technology.”
