LIFESTYLE LETTER
Happy Holidays!
December 2022 PUBLISHER
Tammy Fellows | tammy.fellows@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
For me, it’s the smell of my mom’s holiday cookies. That’s how I know the holidays have arrived. She made them when I was growing up, making the dough ahead of time and freezing it so that my sister and I could then cut it into shapes and decorate it. There would be sugar sprinkles, regular sprinkles, frosting, and chocolate chips waiting to decorate with. The smell of those cookies always immediately makes me feel loved and wraps me in the warmth of family memories. The holidays are here, and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made it feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child, whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities—or a combination of it all that reflects that best. In addition to cookies, for us, it is also gathering for an afternoon of family time with grandparents, aunts, and cousins, and a pile of presents in the middle. We also spend an evening as a family, dressed in pajamas and with cups of hot chocolate, driving around and looking at lights. And, we adopt a family to give them some cheer at the holidays, too. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We include some of the big holiday events around the Valley, a gift guide, and some community members share their favorite traditions, as well. We also showcase a stunning home, a man with an amazingly successful second career, a whirlwind trip to Europe, and more. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community who need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace, and that we all remember to take care of each other, extending grace, empathy, and love. Happy holidays and see you in 2023! Yours,

These are a few of my favorite things … I don’t know about you, but the day after Thanksgiving, I begin to blast the holiday tunes. It always puts me in the best mood! It tends to drive my kids a little nuts, but I can’t help it. The holiday spirit is floating around everywhere you turn … ’tis the season to be jolly! The holidays are my favorite time of year, so much hustle and bustle, festive events, holiday lights, delicious food, divine cocktails, endless traditions, and of course, fun times and traditions with friends and family. Some of my favorite traditions include ... The night of Thanksgiving we do a family ornament exchange, and each person brings an unmarked wrapped tree ornament. It is a game of acquiring your favorite ornament with three possessions and two steals allowed as they get unwrapped. Another tradition takes place on the morning of Christmas Eve. We gather with family for a wonderful breakfast and then pack up family meals that we shopped for earlier and create an assembly line to put them all together, then we drive to find those in need to hand them out—it feels so good! Lastly, on the night of Christmas Eve, we always give our boys new pj’s to sleep in, and my husband and I exchange them for each other, as well! I hope you can find the spirit of the holidays. If you need encouragement, check out the famous movie Scrooged, starring Bill Murray (one of my favorites). At the end of the movie, he encapsulates so well the true meaning and joy that can come this time of year. It is so magical, and he is right—we can all have this joy, every day, all year long! We hope you enjoy the magic of the holiday season! Be grateful, be kind, and live well, Tammy Fellows Owner/Publisher

No matter what you do—or don’t—to celebrate, it’s still easy to get into the spirit of the season. Some have a yearly ritual of giving to those in need, while others look forward to a specific experience or family celebration. No matter what they do, each holds significant meaning. To kick off the holiday season, we caught up with some of our advertisers to find out what tradition they most look forward to each year. Maybe you have a similar tradition or maybe you are inspired by one of these. However you mark the season, we hope it’s meaningful and wonderful.

Home Sweet Home A STUNNING HOME ON A UNIQUE LOT
ARTICLE BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF PHX ARCHITECTURE
“It’s one of my favorite neighborhoods, so it was really special to get this project,” says Erik B. Peterson of PHX Architecture. Peterson’s clients approached him in 2020 with a unique challenge. They had purchased a home that was situated on what he calls a “quirky lot.” Although it faced Camelback Mountain, it didn’t take advantage of the views. It was also a perimeter lot, so the sounds of the gates opening and closing could be heard. After looking at the home and the lot, Peterson saw the potential. They decided to tear the house down and begin from scratch. The result is a stunning home that fit the client’s vision, which incorporates the incredible views of the mountain, a modern design, and eliminates any sounds from the gates. “They wanted modern but the whole community has a traditional take, so we needed it to be in that transitional zone where it had modern elements but a traditional bend,” Peterson explains. “We designed an

H-shaped plan that allowed for a double courtyard. The entire design was about the views to the mountain, and keeping a clean, traditional look that uses traditional materials in a more modern way.” The design allows someone to walk in the front door and not only see the views, but it also speaks to the continuity of that element—even the peak of the fireplace cabana mirrors the mountain’s peak. The kitchen was designed to feel more like artwork than a typical kitchen. “We wanted to create a kitchen that didn’t necessarily feel like a typical kitchen. It feels like a piece of artwork in the room rather than here’s cabinets, here’s appliances,” Peterson says. Peterson explains that they worked closely with the interior design firm Smyth House to bring the project to life.
“I loved that this project was in Casa Blanca, and I loved that this was kind of a new look for us here. It has a more LA-vibe to it,” Peterson says. “And for me, it’s all about the client, and I’m just glad that we were able to show them what could be done on this lot and how working with an architecture firm can help you utilize the best concepts for an interesting lot design. When you hire a great design team, we’re able to make something not so great, great.” PHXArch.com

FINDING A NEW PATH PURSUIT OF A CULINARY DREAM RESULTS IN A SECOND CAREER FOR THE FOUNDERS OF WANDERING DONKEY TAQUERIA & TEQUILA BAR AND EPIC CATERING CONCEPTS
The birth of the Wandering Donkey seems not so long ago to high school sweethearts Lance and Beth Smith. There have been many twists and turns for them since the days of proms to that very special day in early September of 1977 when they said “I do” to one another. The one thing that has always been important to these two, and some of the best memories they have, is breaking bread with old and new friends. They’ll tell you joy is easily found when bellies are full and stories are told. Beth will tell you there’s no shortage of stories when it comes to Lance. “He’s a talker!” she says, although you’re likely to hear her complain in fun, “Not that one, again!” No matter, if you wind up in their path, you’ll find a heartfelt welcome and newfound friends with good food and drink very close by. Many have met Lance at the Arizona Cardinals home games, near Gate 2 on the flight deck of State Farm Stadium. He’s the guy verbally tempting you to taste the food they’ve been serving up at the Wandering Donkey since the last Super Bowl held in Arizona back in 2015. The odds are you’ll be able to find them back at the same venue in 2023! To this day you can still find the original Donkey traveling the city streets here in the Valley of the Sun and beyond. Just a little over a year ago it wandered
into North Scottsdale. Without too much searching, you will find the home of the Wandering Donkey Taqueria & Tequila Bar on the western slopes of the McDowell Mountains at the crossroads of East Bell Road and Thompson Peak Parkway. The meat of this story begins here. After decades of success in the corporate world, just over 10 years ago, Lance embarked upon a new and exciting career path, which he calls in humor his midlife crisis. He was finally ready to discover if his passion for the culinary arts could be the space that would make his family and work life even more rewarding. Keeping himself closer to the gourmet kitchen that he loves to cook in at home for family and friends was a part of his inspiration to take the ultimate leap of faith, never dreaming he would become as diverse within the robust food scenes that are here in Arizona! With a small fleet of four gourmet food trucks, a successful restaurant, and a thriving catering company, thousands of hungry Arizonans, and many tourists and business travelers to our state, are grateful for the professional move that culminated from the Wandering Donkey Taqueria & Tequila Bar, with their food truck still wandering the streets of our city, serving up tasty burritos, bowls, and taco plates. Finally, there is also Epic

Catering Concepts, which is responsible for serving the special guests of the largest and most prestigious public and private events taking place each year here in Arizona. The epiphany came in late 2011 while watching the Food Network’s Great Food Truck Race. “I shouted to Beth in the next room, ‘I think I want to switch my primary mode of transportation from being a passenger in a jet to driving and cooking from my own gourmet food truck!’” Lance says, referring to his wife of 45 years and his business partner over the past 10 years. Beth’s reaction to the declaration made by her husband? “Do it … you would be perfect for the job!” Beth says of her immediate response. “He had already proven himself to be a great chef over the years. I never had any doubt he was made for this. As expected, Lance took it to heart.” Three months later, he transformed a City of Glendale Fire Department retired hazmat truck that he bought at auction, turning it into the Smiths’ first gourmet food truck, Grilled Addiction, and hit the streets, never to look back. “On that first day out, we found a little back road near one of the Deer Valley Industrial parks. I remember within an hour we had sold about 25 plates. The daily plate counts quickly escalated from there to an average of more than 50 per service. We felt if we could continue to maintain that average, our success would only become greater and greater,” Lance says. At one point, the small fleet of trucks numbered four, each representing a different cuisine. The second brand being the Wandering Donkey, was grilled Mexican fare. Today, they feed hundreds, sometimes thousands, in a single day, Lance says. The business’ success propelled the venture beyond the Smiths’ wildest expectations, which inspired Beth to quit her office job to commit to the family business full time. Over the past decade, the Smiths’ path has led them not only down the many streets in Arizona but also to the opening of two restaurants, the latest a year ago in North Scottsdale. “Just when we thought we had done it all, Lance expanded us with another arm to our business, a full-service catering company called Epic Catering Concepts,” Beth says. In fact, they will be exclusively serving up elevated food offerings to thousands of VIP guests of the Phoenix Thunderbirds charity at the WM Phoenix Open, specifically at the four-day Bird’s Nest concert series event taking place Feb. 8-11, 2023. 10 DAYS, FOUR COUNTRIES A WHIRLWIND, FLOATING EUROPEAN ADVENTURE It had always been a dream of mine to show my children Europe. I wanted to ignite the same spark for travel that I had, and to show them other cultures, history, and landscapes. As a travel writer, I’m lucky enough to see the world. They’ve been lucky enough to explore some locales with me, but this would be their first trip overseas.

I wanted to show them as much as possible, but we had limited time. The solution? A cruise. While you may think of cruises as floating cities (and they can be!) complete with mini water parks, shows, and restaurant venues, they’re also a great way to be able to see multiple locales in a limited time frame—in our case, six destinations in four countries in seven days. (We added on days at each end so we would have extra time in Rome.) You go to sleep in one country and wake up in another without ever leaving your room. Perfect. So, this past July, off we went. With several large suitcases between us, my husband, son, daughter, and I headed to the airport to fly to Europe. After 23 hours of traveling we arrived, a little disheveled but excited, in Rome. For a wonderful two days, we explored. First up—after a very long night’s sleep at Salt River Palace Hotel—was a tour of the Vatican, Vatican Museums, and St. Peter’s Basilica. We marveled at the paintings and sculptures, and waited on line to see the stunning Sistine Chapel. We wandered around the city, stopping by Trevi Fountain, where we tossed in coins and made wishes, and the Pantheon, and then settled in for some pasta at a cute outdoor restaurant in Piazza Navona, where live music swirled through the plaza. The next day we headed to Civitavecchia, where we boarded the Norwegian Cruise Line’s Bliss cruise ship. We were ready to explore some of Europe’s highlights, with the same room to come back to each night. Not having to change hotels every time we visited a new city made our trip that much easier—as did the ready-when-wewere breakfast buffet each morning. Our first stop was Naples, Italy, where we set up a tour through Viator that took us to Pompeii, about 30 minutes away. Pompeii is an ancient town that was preserved after the explosion of Mount Vesuvius covered it in ash in A.D. 79. We were able to explore everything from homes to artwork, and yes, the plaster casts of some of those who perished in the explosion. Even my teenagers were fascinated. The next day the cruise ship stopped in Livorno, so we took a bus to Florence, which was about 90 minutes away. (There is also a train that goes between the port and the city.) Florence Cathedral, Ponte Vecchio (the famous bridge), seeing Michelangelo’s “David” (housed at the Galleria delli’Accademia), and shopping at some

outdoor markets were all on our list. Also on our list? Several stops for gelato. Yet, I still think we were able to eat a dessert when we were back on the ship that night! The next day found us in Cannes. There is so much to see nearby there, so we booked an excursion through the ship that began in Cannes, then took us to the outdoor market in Nice (have you seen the pebble beach?), then to Monaco, where we watched the changing of the guards at the Palace (the prince was in residence!), before heading to Monte Carlo, where we drove on some of the streets used for the Grand Prix and saw the famous casino. It was one of our longest days, but the tour guide kept us entertained with anecdotes about the areas (they take care of you on the tours!) as we drove and directed us on what we should see during the exploration time. Our next stop was Palma Majorca, Spain. A beautiful locale though most things were closed, so we were able to head back to the ship and relax by the pool for a while. It was good we were able to have an easy day since our next stop was quite busy—Barcelona, Spain. Again, we booked a tour through Viator, and our tour guide was wonderful. We were in a small group and covered a lot of ground. From Gaudi’s Park Güell with its gingerbread-inspired houses to the Olympic stadium, we saw it all. We ended the day exploring Gaudi’s La Sagrada Familia, with its stunning stained-glass windows. It was then back to the ship for dinner and an evening show, and when we awoke the next morning, we were back in France, in beautiful Ajaccio, the capital of Corsica and the birthplace of French Emperor Napoléon Bonaparte. We toured the area, did a little shopping, and then spent some time in the Mediterranean Sea. It was a bittersweet night that night because we packed up. It would be our last night on the ship, and when we woke up the next morning we would be back in Italy, at the Civitavecchia port. We were sad to disembark our floating home the next morning, but we had another stay at the River Palace Hotel booked again. We spent two more days exploring—from the Colosseum where we took an underground tour to the Roman Forum and the Spanish Steps—before it was finally time to head back home to the United States. It was a busy trip, but one that left an impression on all of us. History and culture, indeed.

The City Lifestyle
Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
