November 2022 LIFESTYLE LETTER

Giving Back and Being Inspired Putting together this magazine is always fun. I love my job. I love being involved with the community, learning its stories, and sharing those stories. Still, never do I love that more than when I get the opportunity to share stories of people who are working to make a difference in other people’s lives. Welcome to our Thankful Issue, in which we include several stories on local nonprofits. Read about the +swappow PLUS Foundation, which makes a difference in the lives of Arizona foster youth by harnessing skateboarding skills to teach key life skills, and The Giving Group AZ, which bands together for amplified giving. Aren’t they inspiring? Of course, we also share other stories, such as how the new Tezcazul brand of tequila came to be and restaurants that are worth the drive. And if you’re not into cooking your own Thanksgiving dinner, we compiled some great locales offering gourmet options to-go! As for me, I’ll mark this Thanksgiving season as I’ve done the past few years—my daughter and I volunteer at various nonprofits around the Valley through National Charity League, and my son and I volunteer through Boys Team Charities. There is so much to be thankful for—and that includes the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community that it is. Here at Scottsdale City Lifestyle, we are also especially thankful for our advertising partners who help bring this magazine to your doorstep each month. They are part of our vision and purpose of bringing inspiring stories and the good news of the community directly to you. This holiday season as we prepare to gather with our loved ones, let’s set time aside to consider what truly makes life meaningful. Happy November! Yours,

letter from the PUBLISHER

A time to give thanks … Gratitude. This could easily be one of my, if not my absolute, favorite feelings! There is nothing quite like the feeling to be grateful for life. There are so many blessings to acknowledge—family, friends, good health, the air we breathe, the place we live, and the love we feel. Life really is beautiful, especially when you are a grateful person. Every day when I wake up, I remind myself how blessed I am. With this brings a tremendous feeling of joy and love—it really is spectacular! The best part is it's completely free! In fact, not only is it free for you, but it's free for everyone. If people could remember just this one thing, it could lead to so much beauty— connections, new friendships, opening doors, helping others, kindness, abundance, and the list goes on … I want to take this opportunity as a friendly reminder to tap into gratitude—every day. It will change how you view the world. With gratitude, fear and anger cease to exist. When we are grateful, it voids out negativity and judgment and only love can exist. As we approach our annual Thanksgiving holiday, I hope that you can reflect on what you are truly thankful for. If it involves people in your life, reach out and tell them. Think of this as a “pay it forward” movement. It will become contagious! This should be a consistent practice, not only around this time of year, but all year long! I hope you all have a wonderful day of gratitude! Be grateful, be kind, and live well, Tammy Fellows Owner/Publisher

Flying High SKATEBOARDING BECOMES A VITAL TOOL TO HELP ARIZONA FOSTER KIDS REACH NEW HEIGHTS, THANKS TO THE +SWAPPOW PLUS FOUNDATION

ARTICLE BY GEORGANN YARA

It requires concentration, balance, focus, patience, and a willingness to get back up after falling. And while skateboarding may initially seem like just another youth activity, in the hands of +swappow PLUS Foundation’s Executive Director Michael Shapiro, it’s become a lifeline for kids who are often overlooked. Since 2015, Shapiro and +swappow founder Joe Dunnigan have used the sport to make a difference in the lives of Arizona foster youth by harnessing skateboarding skills to teach key life skills. Shapiro has seen the impact in the form of participants’ improved self-perception, better participation in school, and a decrease in substance use. Over the last seven years, more than 1,000 Arizona foster children have been the beneficiaries of the foundation’s work, and more than 1,500 skateboards have been donated to the foster community through the generous support of local companies like White Wave Longboards.

“While skateboarding, we spoke the same language. It was a way to stand shoulder to shoulder, rather than from a place of authority.” — MICHAEL SHAPIRO

The foundation serves foster youth ages 7-20 with a variety of workshops that teach professional and personal development skills, all with skateboarding as the vehicle. Shapiro and his wife Robin created the personal development curriculum. Joe Ryan created the professional development program, whereby participants manufacture skateboards and learn business fundamentals. The foundation thrives because of strong support from the community. “We truly believe these kids are extraordinary, not in spite of, but because of their challenges,” Shapiro says. “Our programming gives them the opportunity to grow in confidence and recognize their potential, equipping them to be the future leaders of our community.” An avid skateboarder himself, Shapiro has witnessed how skateboarding can bridge a social gap. He saw this after opening a skatepark at the Prescott YMCA, and while hosting an after-school skateboard program in the Washington Elementary School District, where he taught for 12 years. “While skateboarding, we spoke the same language. It was a way to stand shoulder to shoulder, rather than from a place of authority,” Shapiro says. Just the act of skateboarding is therapeutic. After the sessions, participants are often more present and engaged than they were when they arrived. “While skateboarding, our participants are able to just be kids and enjoy the moment. They’ve been through a lot of trauma and often

26

carry a heavy burden, but while they are with us, they are free,” Shapiro says. Shapiro recalls a participant who attended just one workshop. He was sent to juvenile detention and listed Shapiro as a caring adult, and asked if he would be willing to visit him. Shapiro met with him once a week for a whole year. They talked about his trajectory. The youth asked Shapiro how to realign his path. He got out, was adopted at age 17, and has been sober for nearly two years. He is still actively involved in the program and is now helping newcomers learn how to skate. “We discussed a lot of lessons from skateboarding during our time together, which ultimately we formalized into our personal development course,” Shapiro says. The opportunity to turn hardship into something beautiful is what drives Shapiro and everyone associated with the foundation, including more than 200 local volunteers. “To have the privilege to participate in someone’s childhood is the greatest honor a person can have,” Shapiro says. “To witness participants go from children to young adults, grow into their confidence, to find their voice, and realize their boundless potential is what makes this work meaningful and important.” To make a contribution, visit Arizona CommunityFoundation.Kimbia.com/swappo. Making a Big Impact

The Giving Group AZ Harnesses the Power of Amplified Giving ARTICLE BY MICHELLE TALSMA EVERSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SOPHIA DUBOIS

32

G IV IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE

“It is important to spread kindness, and the best place to start is in our own communities,” says Brian Yampolsky, founder of The Giving Group AZ. Yampolsky and over 100 of his nearest and dearest friends take this to heart by participating in a unique charitable giving collaboration. According to Yampolsky, The Giving Group AZ donates four times a year to a local charity. Each member of the group donates $100 quarterly, which is combined to reach a goal of $10,000. Every 90 days, members of the group nominate their favorite nonprofits for consideration, and from there, four are drawn. The group then votes for the final decision. “The group is made up of over 100 members—friends, families, colleagues, business owners, and nonprofits,” Yampolsky explains. “We leverage our size to make an amplified impact on the nonprofits in our backyards. The concept started with a friend of mine in Seattle, Washington, and now there are 44 chapters across the country. “One of the coolest parts of The Giving Group AZ is that as individuals, we only spend $100, but as a group, we get the feeling of what it’s like to make a $10,000 difference.” The most recent $10,000 donation, announced earlier this fall, went to Families Raising Hope, whose mission is “to assist cancer patients and their families with the financial burden that cancer treatments pose so that they can focus on their health, healing, and recovery.” “This is a tremendous impact on our organization,” says Brian Kovalesky, co-founder

of Families Raising Hope, about the donation. “The generosity of every single member in The Giving Group AZ is nothing short of amazing. It is truly the gold standard that the power of many can change the world.” With a current total of 140 members, The Giving Group AZ was able to donate an additional $4,000 to Almost There Rescue, Future for Kids, and Desert Stages Theatre. Since 2017, The Giving Group AZ has donated $223,117 to local nonprofits. Some of the charitable organizations that have benefited from this unique fundraising model are Foster Arizona Housing Project, Harvest Compassion Center, ResilientMe, Cloud Covered Streets, Go With The Flow, Homeless ID Project, and many others. “The world has enough negativity in it … it’s all over the place. We must be intentional about making positive change because it won’t happen on its own,” Yampolsky says. “Being a part of a $10,000 donation to a local nonprofit makes an amplified impact. There truly is power in numbers.” As 2022 comes to a close, The Giving Group AZ has a goal of ending the year with a solid 150 members. “We are always in growth mode,” Yampolsky says. “The best way to get involved is to either join, which you can do on the website, or to come to the next meeting as a visitor to check things out.” The Giving Group AZ’s next meeting, which is open to members and visitors, is Nov. 17 at 6 p.m. at Desert Stages Theatre (7014 E. Camelback Road, Scottsdale). TTGAZ.org

With so many bucket-list-worthy restaurants nearby, it is all too easy to stay in the Scottsdale bubble when deciding where to dine. But why not branch out? Arizona offers a melting pot of diverse flavors and ingredients around every turn. Litchfield’s, for example, is a must for any wine lover. The iconic West Valley restaurant, which is located inside the historic Wigwam resort, is a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence winner many years over for its perfectly curated selection of sips by the glass and bottle. It also boasts one of the best wine dinner programs in Arizona. Offered one weekend each month—yes, over multiple days—each dinner features a mouth-watering five-course meal for the ages with a selection of wines from one of its personal favorite partners. This Dec. 16-17, Litchfield’s welcomes Silver Oak Cellars. Unable to make the wine dinner? Visit any night of the week for a locally sourced and ultra-romantic meal made over the pecan wood-stocked grill. WigwamArizona.com

Anhelo, which recently moved from its original location at Heritage Square into a beautiful, custom-designed space on the ground floor of the 1930s-era Orpheum Lofts in Downtown Phoenix, is another must. Similarly lauded by Wine Spectator with a 2022 Award of Excellence, this contemporary concept marries chef/owner Ivan Jacobo’s talent and soul on each plate. Jacobo first earned the hearts of Arizona diners through a series of successful, word-of-mouth pop-up dinners before investing in himself and his dream restaurant. His menu, a celebration of ingredients from around the world and classics done right in a fine-dining setting, proves it was an investment well made, indeed. AnheloRestaurant.com Blue Hound Kitchen & Cocktails is also located in Downtown Phoenix. Recently, the locale welcomed both a new chef and a mixology lead. Diners can check out their creations on the new fall menu. Cheeky and fun where they can be and pitch-perfect when it comes to pairing food and spirits, you won’t be disappointed with this long-time favorite. BlueHoundKitchen.com CONTINUED >

Quiessence at the Farm is equal parts wine and foodie heaven and farm-themed fairyland. Located at The Farm at South Mountain, this is farm-to-table dining on a whole other level. The on-property organic garden provides seasonal specialty vegetables, herbs, and edible flowers year-round, which serve as key ingredients in each guest’s choice of a three-, four- or five-course tasting menu. Dinner here—which is served under the glow of sparkling lights strung from above—feels like a dream, but it is all too real, and really, really special. QAtTheFarm.com Joe’s Farm Grill in Gilbert is another one for those obsessed with all things farm-to-fork. The owners are so dedicated to sourcing locally that they harvest the fruit, vegetables, and herbs for the restaurant at their own Farm at Agritopia, supplementing them with local and regional vendors to round out their dishes. The venue itself is also special in that it used to be the owner’s actual ranch-style home. Pro tip: Do not miss the smoked meat and farm favorites menu sections. JoesFarmGrill.com Lovecraft takes its smoked meats as seriously as Joe’s, and it shows in every bite. Though initially opened in Phoenix as more of a craft beer bar with tapas, the New Mexico native owner soon fell in love with the concept of combining barbeque favorites with the rich, spicy flavors of her home state. Today, Lovecraft offers a full menu of meats by the pound, including 12-hour smoked prime rib, pork shoulder, and pulled chicken breast that has been smoked on the bone, as well as starters and entrees featuring house-smoked bacon, and smoked pork combined with spicy red or green chili sauces. LovecraftPhx.com Hidden House is one for those who keep hearing all the buzz about the Southeast Valley but have yet to see its culinary evolution for themselves. Housed in a cozy 1939 cottage located in Downtown Chandler, and truly hidden from direct view of the street, the concept was recently named among Open Table’s 100 Best Neighborhood Gems in America for its elevated-but-approachable menu and intimate setting. The menu’s most ambitious offerings include multiple foie gras dishes, an eye-popping prime ribeye, and the crave-worthy Gochujang glazed pork belly. HiddenHouseAZ.com

Chop, Block & Brew is not quite as hard to find as The Hidden House, but due to its location inside Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino in Maricopa, it is close! Chop dry-ages its meats, allowing them to rest in a carefully controlled state to develop a deeper layer of flavor, and select cuts are cooked sous vide, producing a more consistent taste and size. The 3,454-square-foot modern restaurant also features Native Americaninspired artwork and design elements that highlight the culture and traditions of the Ak-Chin Indian Community. HarrahsAkChin.com

Any good bucket list should also include a few stops up north, notably Atria and Teatro in Flagstaff, Mariposa in Sedona, and Crema Craft Kitchen in Cottonwood. Atria is a James Beard Award-nominated fine-dining concept from the mind of chef Rochelle Daniel of Fat Ox fame, while Teatro Italian Food & Wine is the newest eatery from THAT Place Projects, beloved across Northern Arizona for its Tinderbox Kitchen, Annex, Tourist Home, and Corn & Flour restaurant. Latininspired Mariposa is among the most scenic restaurants statewide, perfectly situated amid some of the most beautiful views of Sedona’s Red Rocks in nearly every direction. And its food? It is just as good as the view. Finally, Crema Craft Kitchen & Bar is the brainchild of the Haunted Hotel Group out of Cottonwood, and home to a menu of love-at-first-bite brunch favorites and clever cocktails. TEZCAZUL TEQUILA One Man’s Passion for a Quality Product Leads a New Brand

For Michael Rowe, creating a new tequila brand all began as a hobby and is quickly turning into a dream. “I grew up in California and spent a lot of time in Mexico. Not surprisingly, I quickly acquired a passion for tequila. Not only for its flavor, but also for tequila’s link to its ancient Aztec culture,” he says. At one point, Rowe realized he wanted to create his own brand to learn more about the spirit’s history, origins, and manufacturing process, and discover for himself why tequila is considered the “Mexican by Excellence” beverage and part of the way of life for many Mexican people. The journey and education began … creating Tezcazul. When Rowe set off to fulfill his passion, he headed to what some experts consider the birthplace of tequila: Amatitàn, Jalisco, Mexico. “I made a contact in Guadalajara and we drove to Amatitàn, about an hour outside the city. We hiked through the cobblestone streets, knocking on distillery doors, and spoke to many knowledgeable tequileros about their product and processes,” he says. “Then, I met the man who had all of the right answers [I was looking for], so we sipped samples, smiled, and shook hands. The next thing you know, I am contemplating brand names, searching for bottle-makers, designing labels, and doing everything else that is required to obtain my personal stash of handcrafted tequila.” After learning about the United States—and Mexican—federal licensing requirements and importation processes for a couple hundred bottles, Rowe asked himself, “Why am I not doing this as more than just a hobby?”

CREATING TEZCAZUL That moment, Tezcazul tequila was born, and would now become available for everyone to enjoy. Rowe knew from the outset what he wanted. Not only did he want a pure tequila, manufactured in the traditional fashion, but also free of any additives, as well as being certified organic.

“I wanted a product I could be very proud of,” he says of his tequila. “A tequila that pays homage to the Aztec gods who first discovered its magical qualities.” Hence the brand name was decided: Tezcazul. A blend of letters starting with the first few from Tezcatlipoca, the ancient Aztec god of the nocturnal skies, and the Spanish word for blue, azul, representing the Blue Weber agave plant from which the spirit is made. “We are a handcrafted, artisanal tequila, made from organically farmed, sustainable, 100% blue agave. We implement traditional manufacturing processes and are dedicated to maintaining the purity, quality, and essence of this wonderful Mexican spirit,” Rowe says. “The response to Tezcazul has been fantastic!” he continues. “Our tequilas are made for everyone, from the shooters, blenders, sippers, and of course, the bottle collectors. Our bottles were intentionally designed in a simple fashion to add to the artisanal quality, but primarily to focus your attention on the liquid inside. It’s all about providing quality, artisanal tequila to those who can truly appreciate tequila.” There are four Tezcazul tequila expressions: Blanco, Reposado, Añejo, and Extra Añejo. Tezcazul Blanco is a natural, pure, earthy expression with hints of herbal and citrus flavors bottled directly from a stainless-steel fermentation tank following a double distillation process. Blanco is the essence and foundation of all Tezcazul tequilas. Tezcazul Reposado is rested for eight months in seasoned American white oak barrels, and is a favorite for sippers and mixers alike. After a timely, precise release, Tezcazul Reposado emits fresh aromas and subtle flavors of vanilla and citrus extracted during its “short” siesta in the cool and dark security of its temporary wooden home. Tezcazul Añejo is aged for 18 months in seasoned American white oak barrels. The rich and flavorful Añejo excites the nose with aromas of smoked agave, caramel, and vanilla. The noticeable amber color is representative of this full-bodied, smooth tequila offers a lingering and lasting experience from the first sip to finish. Tezcazul Extra Añejo is an

exceptional representation of a slow, nurturing process, extending over a very patient 60-month period of maturing in seasoned American white oak barrels. Well worth the wait, the Extra Añejo offers sophisticated and savory flavors of vanilla and caramel that truly deserve the title and recognition of a distinguished, unique, fine, handcrafted tequila. All Tezcazul tequilas are presented in 100% recycled glass bottles. Tezcazul is imported by El Tomandante Importers, LLC (also owned by Rowe).

While Rowe created Tezcazul and is the importer, he’s been working with David Fox of International Brands and Beverages to distribute the tequila. The two have known each other and worked together for many years. “In the United States, a single company cannot be both an importer and distributor,” Fox explains. “So in late 2018, I started International Brands and Beverages in Tucson to distribute the brand in Arizona for El Tomandante and Tezcazul.” Today, Fox has moved the base of International Brands and Beverages’ operations to Phoenix, and there are now four managing partners—Fox; his son, Matthew; and Tammy and Eric Fellows—guiding it through the startup of sales and marketing. They have located the world headquarters in a newly refurbished space in the Scottsdale Airpark that includes offices, a warehouse, and facilities for introducing Tezcazul to new clients with private tastings. International Brands and Beverages is the exclusive distributor for Tezcazul, and the brand is the company’s primary focus. In the future, they are open to distributing other brands as Tezcazul becomes successful and opportunities come their way. Fox says they are launching Tezcazul in the Arizona market first, with other markets to follow. “Arizona is the seventh largest tequila market in the country, and we chose Phoenix for the launch based on our partners’ long history in the area and its high percentage mix of restaurants, bars, and retail outlets that sell tequila,” he says. “The distinctive thing about Tezcazul is that it’s a smooth, well-rounded, great-tasting tequila that adheres to traditional production methods with no additives,” he continues. “I think that the work that Mike has done with the distiller to create unique flavor profiles separates it from the other tequilas out there, and it’s certified organic and kosher. “This is all about providing a quality, artisanal tequila to those who appreciate tequila,” says Rowe.
