LIFESTYLE LETTER
Style 2026 Every issue starts as separate stories: a designer, a foundation, a photoshoot at a vineyard. It isn’t until things come together that a theme reveals itself, and this month, it kept showing up in the same shape no matter where we looked. Paige Saltzman of Nanci Paige Design said it plainly, in her own words: a home isn’t defined by how it photographs. It’s defined by how it holds up to an actual life. The kitchen renovation we feature this month proves it. The fix wasn’t cosmetic. It solved a real problem a real family was living with every day. The Santa Ynez Valley Foundation made the same case in a different key. Thirtyfive years since its founding, the Santa Ynez Valley Foundation is still quietly changing what’s possible for local students — one scholarship, awarded 621 times over, without ever needing an audience to matter. Champions of the Valley, celebrating its 31st year this October, exists specifically to honor people who never asked to be recognized in the first place. Mark your calendar for October 11. Even our cover story, built around two mornings and a lot of good clothes, ended up making the same argument. Buttonwood was a horse ranch for over a decade before it was a vineyard, built one honest addition at a time. The horses on its trails today spent an earlier life on movie sets, and now get to just be horses. Nothing in this Valley, it turns out, is really built for the photograph. It’s built to be used, and used well, long after anyone’s looking. That’s the thread running through this whole issue, whether the subject is a house, a scholarship, or a hat you’ll wear for a decade: the things worth trusting here were made carefully before anyone was watching, not for the moment someone finally would. We hope this issue gives you a little of that same instinct: to look past the photograph, and toward whatever’s actually holding the whole thing up.

W H Y T H E B E S T H O M E S A R E N ’ T J U S T B E A U T I F U L—T H E Y ’ R E B U I LT AROUND THE PEOPLE WHO CALL THEM HOME.
Walk through a thoughtfully designed home, and it’s easy to notice the obvious details first: the finishes, the colors, the lighting, the furniture. But according to interior designer Paige Saltzman of Nanci Paige Design, those elements are only part of the story. A successful home isn’t defined by how it photographs. It’s defined by how it supports the people who live there. “We all want a beautiful home,” Paige says. “But it’s more about how it works for them—how they move through the space and how they use it.” That philosophy has become the foundation of her work throughout the Santa Ynez Valley, where every project begins not with fabrics or paint colors, but with conversation. “I start with dialogue,” she explains. “I try to get a sense for them as people. Sometimes clients can verbalize exactly what they want; other times, they struggle to. If it is harder for them, it’s up to me to help tease it out,” she says. “I’ll just make small talk to get a sense of who they are.”
Homes, she’s found, need to keep pace with the people living in them. “As you move through the stages of your life, your requirements change,” Paige says, “those requirements translate into what you’re looking for in a home.” That understanding recently shaped one of her favorite Valley projects, a kitchen renovation for Mike and Juliet of Athyrium Vineyard that started with a problem no paint chip or tile sample could fix. “Our first meeting revealed something important,” Paige recalls. “Aside from having an unfortunate aesthetic, the kitchen lacked the functionality Juliet required.” Its L-shaped layout created what she describes as “a penalty box feel while cooking,” wasted space on an unused breakfast area, and left nowhere to store or display wine. That same instinct for asking the right questions revealed what the floor plan alone hadn’t: they rarely used the breakfast table and had always wanted a proper place for their wine. So she set the inspiration boards aside and sketched three floor plans before landing on a galley-style kitchen split between CONTINUED >

“A SUCCESSFUL HOME IS ONE WHERE THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE THERE HAVE THE SPACES THEY NEED: WHETHER THAT’S A HAPPY SPACE, A PRIVATE SPACE, OR WHATEVER THEY WANT FROM THEIR HOME. IF IT ACHIEVES THAT, THAT’S SUCCESS.” cooking and lifestyle, with no hard line between the two. Removing the short leg of the L opened up real cooking space and naturally stopped guests from unintentionally hovering while she’s in the kitchen. The old breakfast nook became a coffee bar instead, and a relocated window made room for something the kitchen never had: proper wine storage.

“We had such a good time bringing this kitchen to life,” Paige says. The finished space came together sleek and polished, with a hint of French café. It’s an aesthetic Paige says comes easily in the Santa Ynez Valley, where the final look tends to reflect the Valley’s own relaxed character. It’s also, she says, where a common misconception comes in. “I don’t think people really understand what interior design is,” she says. “I think they think it’s decorating. There’s a big difference.” Decorating focuses on appearance; design balances beauty with technical knowledge and durability. “Many people aren’t aware of what materials are appropriate,” she explains. “Yes, that’s a gorgeous fabric, but it may not hold up for a family with kids. Or that’s a beautiful countertop, but it stains easily. Your lifestyle determines whether those materials are the right choice for your needs.” In the end, style is only the finishing layer. “A successful home,” she says, “is one where the people who live there have the spaces they need: whether that’s a happy space, a private space, or whatever they want from their home. If it achieves that, that’s success.” They’re designed for living.

The Santa Ynez Valley’s art scene is not-so-quietly having a moment right now. New galleries keep opening, from converted barns to boutique storefronts, and the range of work being made here has never been wider. This list isn’t exhaustive by any means. It’s simply a great place to start exploring everything this Valley’s artists and makers have to offer, one gallery at a time.

How the Sant a Ynez Valley dresses for the r ide, the round, and the har vest . ARTICLE BY SARA DEMARCUS PHOTOGRAPHY BY LENA IBARRA
The Santa Ynez Valley trusts things made well: vineyards, ranches, tables built to last. Clothing is no different. Very few locals here dress for a trend; they dress for the life they’re already living, in pieces meant to hold up. The following two mornings make the case better than any outfit could. CONTINUED >

Styled by the Alisal Ranch Pro Shop
Just off Alamo Pintado, Buttonwood Winery’s new horseback trail rides wind through vineyard rows and open pasture. Randee Haluszka takes the lead in a wide-brimmed, custom hat from Flame Kissed and soft, unstructured layers from Plenty Boutique, built to be ridden in, sweated through, and worn again next week. Wildflowers crowd the trail this time of year, and the vines run along the ridge in the distance, doing the quiet work terroir always does here: reminding you exactly where you are. Buttonwood was a horse ranch long before it was a vineyard, and the horses now pay homage to that history. These horses spent an earlier life on movie sets before retiring here, to quieter mornings and gentler work, brought out today by Hector and his team, who treat each animal like something worth taking care of properly, not just using up. It’s a small, specific version of a bigger Valley habit: take the time to do it right, and it lasts long enough to be worth the trouble. Betty Williams, the land conservationist who founded Buttonwood in 1968, didn’t build it all at once. First came horses, then organic vegetables, then a vineyard in 1983, each addition built on what came before rather than replacing it. That patience still shapes the place: weekend tastings in the garden, a seasonal food menu, live music some Saturday afternoons, and now a saddle alongside the wine list. Ride out in the morning, and you’re in boots built for sun and dirt; by early afternoon, the same property has you dressed for a harvest dinner, glass in hand, Matt in relaxed Freenote Cloth layers from Los Olivos Outfitters. Neither version is a costume. Both were made to last, and both were made with intention. CONTINUED >

Ten minutes up the road, at Alisal, the same idea shows up dressed differently. Mike Brady, Micah Brady, Brenda Cloud, and Scott Loos work together every day, and the same ease that carries them through a workday carries onto the course, too: the golf is almost beside the point. The clothes are easy on purpose, not because nobody cares, but because good clothes shouldn’t need thinking about once you’re wearing them, styled by the Alisal Ranch Pro Shop for exactly that reason. Josh Hartley, co-founder of Los Olivos Outfitters, puts the whole idea more plainly than anyone: he’s not interested in trend-chasing or turning the town into a “cookie-cutter Pinterest board.” His shop is built around pieces you’ll love and live with for a long time, the same standard of Flame Kissed hats, the same standard that built Buttonwood one addition at a time.
That’s most of what Alisal has always been about too: less the tee times, more the friendships that come from showing up to the same course with the same people, year after year. Alisal’s own membership pitch says as much: privileged course access, but also deeper friendships with people who share your hobbies. For the Brady Group, that friendship was already built at work; a morning like this is just an extension of it, the golf changes, the company doesn’t. Two mornings, neither looked anything like the other. But the care underneath both was the same: a founder who built one thing at a time, a horseman who gave old horses a second life instead of an ending, and a shopkeeper who’d rather sell one good shirt than ten forgettable ones. That’s what Valley style has always rested on: not a look, but a standard. Trail, tee, or terroir, the wardrobe changes. The standard behind it never does.

THE foundation BEHIND THE valley Grants, scholarships, and over thirty years of quiet local investment. ARTICLE BY SARA DEMARCUS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
When Adria Griggs was a high school senior, her parents told her they could only afford community college. Then she received a scholarship from the Santa Ynez Valley Foundation. “It was the reason I got to go to San Diego State,” Griggs says. That scholarship set her on a different path. She went on to become a teacher and coach before attending law school. Today, she serves as a deputy city attorney for the City of San Luis Obispo. Looking back, she says the scholarship meant more than financial support—it gave her confidence that someone had invested in her future. Griggs is one of 621 students who have received scholarships through the SYV Foundation’s College Scholarship Program since it began in 2000. More than $1.1 million has been awarded to local students, each one carrying forward an idea the Foundation has held since 1991. Established by local businessman, philanthropist, and horse breeder Stuart C. Gildred, the Foundation was built on a simple belief: a community as fortunate as the Santa Ynez Valley should also invest in the people who help make it strong. Thirty-five years later, that idea still shapes its work. Along the way, the Foundation has awarded more than $7.5 million in grants and scholarships, supporting local nonprofits and community initiatives throughout the Santa Ynez Valley and Los Alamos. “Every grant and scholarship reflects the Foundation’s commitment to partnering with the community to enhance the quality of life in the Santa Ynez Valley and Los Alamos,” says Executive Director Esther Jacobsen Bates.

Youth & Education still generates the largest share of grant applications, but the Foundation’s work also spans health and human services, arts and culture, and community enhancement. In 2023, food security became a strategic priority as well, answering a growing need to help local families, children, and seniors access nutritious food reliably. “We’ve expanded grantmaking to address emerging needs while welcoming new nonprofit partners and continuing to support the organizations that have long served our communities,” Bates says. Increasingly, she says, the Foundation’s role goes beyond funding projects. It also brings nonprofit leaders, donors, and community members together to share ideas and identify needs. For many residents, however, the Foundation is best known for one annual tradition. This October 11, it will host the 31st Champions of the Valley celebration, recognizing adult and youth volunteers whose service often happens quietly but leaves a lasting mark on the community. “These are neighbors who give their time, talents, and hearts without expecting recognition, yet their generosity strengthens our nonprofits and touches countless lives,” Bates says. This year’s honorees will be announced in the coming weeks. For those looking to get involved, the Foundation offers ways to learn about grants and scholarships, nominate future Champions of the Valley, and stay connected with its work throughout the year. “We believe philanthropy begins with relationships,” Jacobsen Bates says—a philosophy that has held for all thirty-five years the Foundation has existed. The grants and scholarships are easy enough to count. Harder to measure is what happens after: a student who finds a path that once seemed out of reach, a nonprofit able to keep serving its neighbors, a volunteer whose quiet effort never shows up on a balance sheet but changes something anyway. Griggs is proof of that math. One scholarship, and an entirely different life came out the other side.
CHAMPIONS OF THE VALLEY For more than three decades, the Santa Ynez Valley Foundation has honored local volunteers whose generosity, leadership, and service have strengthened communities throughout the Santa Ynez Valley and Los Alamos. INGREDIENTS: • • • • • •
1 bottle, standard size, of pinot grigio 2 1/2 cups fresh apple cider 1 cup club soda 1/2 cup ginger brandy 3 honey crisp apples, chopped 3 pears, chopped
DIRECTIONS: Combine all ingredients together and stir. Refrigerate for an hour or so (or longer) before serving. The drink can be enjoyed immediately, if desired, but the longer you let the ingredients sit and mix, the deeper the flavors will be. Giving it time to develop will make the drink more captivating and interesting.
NOTE: Regular brandy can be used, but ginger brandy gives it an extra kick of flavor.
