As the golden light of September settles over the Valley and our days stretch just a little slower, we welcome the season with our annual Style Issue—a celebration of beauty, confidence, and the subtle sophistication that defines life here in the Santa Ynez Valley.
When we talk about style, we don’t just mean fashion (though you’ll certainly find plenty of inspiration here). True style—at least the kind that lasts—is about more than what you wear. It’s about how you live, the spaces you create, the stories you share, and yes, even the way you smile.
In this issue, we explore style in all its forms, starting with a quick escape to San Diego. From breezy beach moments to coastal cool shopping districts, our editorial team shares where to stay, sip, and soak up seaside sophistication in this ever-stylish city (pg 20).
Closer to home, we sit down with a local dentist who has built a reputation for creating smile transformations that go beyond surface beauty. The Adam Haws Dentistry approach blends aesthetics with confidence, using the art and science of dentistry to help patients express themselves more boldly in the world. A beautiful smile, after all, is one of the most timeless accessories you can wear (pg 26).
For those who find their style in rooted spaces, we also take a stroll through a beloved local nursery that reminds us that style isn’t limited to clothing or interiors—it’s living, breathing, and growing all around us. The houseplants they recommend not only bring elegance and texture to your space, but also contribute to your well-being, one leaf at a time (pg 16).
And finally, we pull back the curtain on what might be the most overlooked element of any well-styled celebration: production. Richmond Productions has been quietly orchestrating some of the most memorable moments across the Valley and beyond, proving that good lighting, thoughtful sound, and seamless transitions are the invisible threads that tie it all together. Their work doesn’t ask to be noticed—it’s felt, not seen (pg 32).
Whether you find your style in the curve of a ceramic pot, the rhythm of a well-produced evening, or the way your favorite denim fits just right, this issue is for you.
Here’s to living stylishly—in whatever way that looks for you.
Go Pirates!

There’s something quietly transformative about bringing houseplants into a home. With their organic textures, architectural forms, and calming presence, indoor plants have evolved from simple greenery into essential design elements. They soften interiors, add visual interest, and create a sense of balance that connects our living spaces to the natural world outside.
In the Santa Ynez Valley, where lifestyle and landscape blend seamlessly, this design shift feels especially at home. Increasingly, residents are incorporating indoor plants not only for their aesthetic value, but also for their health and wellness benefits. Studies have shown that houseplants can help purify the air, reduce stress, and enhance mental clarity. They make a room feel more personal, more alive, and more grounded.
Whether you’re working with a sleek, modern palette or a cozy, collected interior, there’s a plant to complement your space. Larger varieties can anchor a room, while smaller options add a soft touch to shelves, windowsills, or quiet corners. And with a bit of care, many houseplants are easier to maintain than you might expect.
The team at Windmill Nursery in Buellton has embraced this indoor-outdoor philosophy for years. Their thoughtfully curated selection includes everything from hardy staples to lush tropicals, helping customers of all experience levels find greenery that suits both their style and lifestyle.
Whether you’re a seasoned plant enthusiast or new to the world of indoor plants, the right choice can elevate your space... naturally.
Here are four stylish favorites that do just that:
ARTICLE BY NICK THARP
“Increasingly, residents are incorporating indoor plants not only for their aesthetic value, but also for their health and wellness benefits. Studies have shown that houseplants can help purify the air, reduce stress, and enhance mental clarity.”
If you’re looking to make a bold statement, the Fiddle Leaf Fig is a standout choice. With its large, sculptural leaves that help purify the air, this plant instantly elevates any room with its dramatic, modern appeal. Place it in a well-lit corner or near a sunny window for best results.
Delicate and timeless, the Maidenhair Fern adds a touch of softness and sophistication to any indoor space. It’s fine; lacy fronds and bright green hue bring a gentle, romantic feel that pairs beautifully with both traditional and contemporary décor. This fern prefers low light and thrives in high humidity, making it an ideal choice for bathrooms, kitchens, or shaded areas.
Effortlessly stylish, philodendrons are a favorite for adding a lush, tropical feel to your home. Their heart-shaped leaves and trailing varieties make them incredibly versatile—perfect for bookshelves, tabletops, or hanging baskets. These forgiving plants thrive in low to moderate light and are tolerant of occasional missed watering, making them ideal for busy households or first-time plant owners.
Bold, modern, and nearly indestructible, the Snake Plant is a favorite for its striking form and low-maintenance care. Its sword-like leaves add structure and a sculptural element to interiors, making it a great fit for minimalist, bohemian, or Southwest-inspired spaces. Snake plants tolerate low light and irregular watering with ease, and they’re known for improving indoor air quality.

Buellton is a town known for its charming community and growing economy. But for those in the know, it’s also home to one of the most advanced and compassionate dental practices on California’s Central Coast— Adam Haws Dental. At first glance, the modern, welcoming office space might feel more like a boutique spa than a dental clinic. From calming aromas to curated patient portraits that speak of transformation and trust, every detail is thoughtfully designed. But what truly sets this practice apart isn’t just aesthetics—it’s the story behind it and the extraordinary care that unfolds within its walls.
Dr. Adam Haws didn’t take the typical route to dentistry. After earning a degree in international relations from Brigham Young University, with a focus on Japanese business and a minor in music, he seemed poised for a future in global commerce. But something didn’t feel right.
“I just couldn’t do it,” he recalls. “I wanted to be my own boss. I didn’t want anyone telling me how much I should work or what I was worth. I wanted autonomy—and dentistry gave me that.”
Following in the footsteps of his father—a respected dentist of more than 50 years—Dr. Haws returned to California, completed his prerequisites at UCSB, and earned his DDS from the University of the Pacific in 2004. After gaining experience in several practices, including those run by family members, he felt called to create something of his own.
In 2008, he opened Adam Haws Dental in a brand-new building in Buellton. “It was four walls and concrete,” he says with a laugh. “No patients. Nothing. I bet everything on this.” Today, the practice is thriving, built on a foundation of innovation, integrity, and deep trust within the community.
Dr. Haws isn’t just passionate about teeth— he’s passionate about the patient experience. At Adam Haws Dental, the once-dreaded dental visit is now streamlined and stress-free. Gone are the days of messy impressions and multiple appointments for a single crown.
“Now it’s all digital,” he explains. “We use a scanner—it takes about 30 seconds instead of five minutes. It’s quick, clean, and comfortable.”
The practice features a state-of-the-art CNC milling machine which allows crowns to be designed and created in-house, often within 30 minutes. “It used to take 45 minutes to mill and another 30 to bake. Now it takes just five to mill and under 15 to finish,” he says. “Patients love watching their crown being made right in front of them—it blows them away.”
But beyond the technology, it’s the philosophy of convenience that truly elevates the experience. “No more temporaries. No waiting weeks. We seat the crown before the anesthesia even wears off. Our patients walk out done—no return visits needed. That’s the kind of care and experience they remember.”
In addition to general dentistry, Adam Haws Dental offers advanced cosmetic and restorative treatments—from Invisalign and veneers to TMJ therapy and even facial aesthetics. Though some might be surprised to find Botox and dermal fillers offered in a dental office, Dr. Haws makes a compelling case. “I’ve spent years studying facial anatomy— more extensively than most,” he says with a smile. “And we tie it directly into dentistry—whether it’s for migraines, jaw tension, or gummy smiles.”
The proof is in the portraits. Every photo on the wall is a real patient—many of them recipients of full-mouth reconstructions or the practice’s signature Smile Makeovers. Through this program, Dr. Haws and his team select individuals in need of transformative dental care—people who may have lost confidence, opportunities, or even jobs due to the condition of their teeth. “We weren’t just looking for someone with bad teeth,” he explains. “We were looking for stories. People who couldn’t do this on their own. We wanted to make a real difference.”
These transformations are gifted, not purchased—offered as a way to give back to a community that has given the Haws family so much. Jamie, who was missing multiple teeth, now beams with confidence. Gary, once self-conscious about crowding, now smiles with ease after Invisalign and veneers. “It’s our way of paying it forward,” Dr. Haws says.
Despite the high-tech environment and stunning cosmetic outcomes, the soul of Adam Haws Dental lies in its sense of family. Dr. Haws works side-by-side with his wife, Camene, who manages the business operations behind the scenes. Their children are pursuing passions of their own—traveling abroad, raising families, and continuing a legacy of service and adventure.
Dentistry runs deep in the family. His father practiced for over five decades. His brother, brother-in-law, and other relatives are also in the profession. That tradition of care is palpable throughout the practice—and it extends to the patients.
In a world where many dental offices feel cold and clinical, Adam Haws Dental stands apart— merging cutting-edge technology with smalltown warmth. From real-time crown creation to life-changing smile makeovers, this is more than a dental practice. It’s a place of transformation, rooted in purpose and driven by heart.

BEHIND EVERY BEAUTIFUL CELEBRATION IS A TEAM MAKING IT LOOK EFFORTLESS
In the Santa Ynez Valley, we know how to throw a celebration. From farmto-table fundraisers in rustic barns to intimate celebrations in private tasting rooms, our events are steeped in beauty, charm, and attention to detail. But for all the visual allure —
“YOU
read the room — literally. Acoustics, wind, and even seating placement can change what guests hear. That’s where experience matters.”
Whether it’s a nonprofit gala or a private wine release party, professional sound design ensures that
perfect florals, curated tablescapes, golden-hour lighting — there’s a lesser-seen layer that often determines whether an event truly lands
That layer is production.
Sound, lighting, and seamless coordination may not be immediately apparent on an Instagram reel, but they are the difference between an event that sparkles and one that falls flat. “You don’t always notice great production,” says Earl Richmond, a longtime Valley resident and founder of Richmond Productions. “But you always feel it.”
At any event, sound is both fundamental and fragile. A garbled toast or screeching mic can undercut even the most heartfelt moment. The best audio, Richmond notes, is never about loudness—it’s about clarity, placement, and the acoustics of a space.
“People don’t realize how much goes into it,” he says. “You have to
every word resonates the way it should: without static, without strain — just seamless storytelling.
Lighting does more than illuminate. It sets the tone, shapes the ambiance, and often becomes the silent narrator of an event. Think warm uplighting against stone walls, soft glows in historic tasting rooms, or dynamic effects for an event ballroom stage.
“Lighting should elevate the mood, not distract it,” Richmond says. “When it’s done well, guests don’t notice the fixtures—they just feel the atmosphere shift.”
Richmond Productions is one of those teams that rarely stand in the spotlight, but often make it possible. They cue transitions, balance soundboards, and adjust lighting levels from behind the scenes. The goal? A smooth, stylish flow that never calls attention to the technology, making it all happen.
“A well-produced event isn’t about flash,” Richmond says. “It’s about the feel.”
Earl Richmond’s journey into production started not on a stage, but beneath the sea. In 2008, he founded Our World of Oceans , a nonprofit devoted to marine education. He spent years creating award-winning documentary films for prominent organizations, including National Geographic, PBS, and the BBC. His work has taken him from submarines to helicopters — and eventually to the event stages of Santa Barbara County.
He staged his first event by showcasing a historical film he produced for Bien Nacido Vineyards, highlighting the founders. “We needed to create a whole atmosphere for that screening,” he recalls. “That’s when I realized the crossover between storytelling and event design.”
Today, with over three decades of experience, Richmond quietly helps shape some of the most immersive events across the Central Coast.
A FEW HELPFUL TIPS TO ENSURE YOUR EVENT GOES OFF WITHOUT A HITCH:
• Start with a walk-through. – Before rentals, playlists, or layouts, walk the venue with your production team. “It’s where the real planning starts,” says Richmond. “Every space has its own unique needs.”
• Prioritize outdoor audio. – The Valley’s open-air beauty is part of the draw, but it also introduces unpredictability. Wireless mics, directional speakers, and wind-tested setups can make all the difference.
• Trust the invisible team. – Production crews may stay out of sight, but their expertise often enables hosts and guests to immerse themselves in the experience fully. “We’re not the ones clinking glasses,” Richmond says. “But we’re the reason you can hear the toast.”
