As May blooms into our lives, it brings two very different things—one I could do without (allergies) and one I eagerly anticipate each year: celebrating the incredible women in our community with the Ladies Issue. This issue is dedicated to the women who enrich our lives with their strength, grace, and unwavering spirit.
Our community is a tapestry woven with remarkable women from all walks of life. From trailblazers in traditionally male-dominated fields to those who selflessly give their time, talents, and resources to uplift others, their impact is immeasurable. Reflecting on my own journey, I am profoundly aware of the influential women who have shaped me. Their guidance transcends time, age, and distance. I invite you to ponder: who are the extraordinary women in your life—past or present— who have helped shape the person you are today? And have you shared with them just how much they mean to you?
This month, we take a closer look at some of the “Mothers Behind the Magazine” (p. 18) and how our community has impacted and shaped them. For those who may have procrastinated a little too long on finding the perfect gift for the mother figure in their life, our Mother’s Day Gift Guide (p. 14) is here to help. We also shine a spotlight on one of the most unique Western-style jewelry boutiques on the Central Coast, Charlotte’s of Santa Ynez (p.24).
In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it is easy to overlook taking a moment to pause and replenish our own spirits. Yet, it is in those moments of self-care that we find the strength to continue nurturing the people and passions closest to our hearts.
As we celebrate Mother’s Day, let us take a moment to express gratitude to the mothers and mother figures who have shaped us with their love, wisdom, and sacrifices. May this issue serve as both a tribute to the incredible women in our lives and a reminder to cherish the moments of connection, laughter, and love they bring into our lives.
Go Pirates!
Cheers,
May 2025

How Plenty Boutique Takes the Guesswork Out of Mother’s Day
Another Mother’s Day is fast approaching, and I know that all of us fathers and sons have everything perfectly planned, as we do every single time. Birthdays, Valentine’s Day, and anniversaries can really add up. We all love celebrating the mother or mother figures in our lives. But sometimes, on that very rare occasion, we have a moment when we may not have planned out as perfectly as we had intended. I will be the first to admit that I have been known to suffer from this brain lapse once or twice, but I know I love my wife more than anything.
Thanks to the wonderful women at the Plenty Boutique, I have been saved from disaster more than once. I thought I could take this opportunity to inspire some of the partners who are searching for that wonderful gift for the woman in their life but may not exactly know entirely where to start.
For me, I walk into Plenty Boutique, and I’m instantly imbibed with the Santa Ynez vibe. From hats to jeans to apothecary supplies and jewelry, there is always something that will make the mother in your life joyful. And to top it all off, there are items at any price point. It’s just another example of how accommodating Plenty Boutique can be. With all these incredible options to choose from, I am not ashamed to admit that I have asked their wonderful employees for their input, and boy, do they deliver.
They always take the time to weigh all the options when considering what’s trendy, comfortable, and a must-have for the season. I could not be more appreciative of all the effort and thoughtfulness that Plenty displays when I or anyone wanders in.
Plenty Boutique is located at 1110 Faraday Street in Santa Ynez, so stop by and get the mother or mother figure in your life something special this year.
We all love celebrating the mother or mother figures in our lives.
There is something special about a group of families coming together to celebrate motherhood over brunch, and there’s no better place to do so than Roblar. Some were born and raised here, others relocated with their families, and many are part of a unique blend. That same dynamic is reflected in the dedicated contributors to our monthly publication, each bringing their own connection and love for this community to every issue.
MEET THE WOMEN WHO BALANCE STORYTELLING, FAMILY, AND COMMUNITY WITH GRACE

HOW DO YOU SEE THE MAGAZINE PLAYING A ROLE IN PRESERVING THE STORIES, TRADITIONS, AND BUSINESSES THAT MAKE THE SYV SUCH A SPECIAL PLACE TO RAISE A FAMILY, AND HOW HAS MOTHERHOOD INFLUENCED THE WAY YOU CURATE CONTENT?
The SYV is rich in history, but the younger generations must preserve its legacy. Having lived here for over a decade, I’ve seen firsthand how deeply rooted our community is. Many admire successful local businesses but don’t always understand the hard work that goes into building them. Our magazine offers a platform for sharing these untold stories, providing insight and inspiration while connecting readers to the individuals and businesses that make this valley unique.
As a mother, my perspective on curating content has changed significantly. I was raised to honor the past, respect the present, and prepare for the future; that perspective guides every issue. Before motherhood, I didn’t think much about balance, but becoming a mom reshaped my priorities and gave me a deeper appreciation for what truly matters— faith, family, and freedom. This outlook influences how we celebrate the remarkable residents of the SYV who are building their legacies while balancing family, business, and community.

HOW DID YOU BECOME SO INVOLVED IN OUR COMMUNITY QUICKLY AFTER MOVING HERE, AND WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOTHER’S DAY MEMORY?
We knew very few people when we moved to the SYV five years ago. Fortunately, our first friends here (you guys!) introduced us to the community, helping us connect with more people and places. We quickly realized how special and welcoming this valley is. A couple of years in, I joined Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPs), which led to even more opportunities to get involved. Now, I’m lucky to work at Saarloos and Sons, write for the magazine (my favorite side gig), and serve as the coordinator for a local mom’s group called MomCo. I’m also stepping into a leadership role at my daughter’s school and love supporting local businesses, fundraisers, and community events. Raising our kids here has been an incredible gift, and we feel so grateful for the deep sense of belonging this valley provides.
My favorite Mother’s Day memory is the first one I celebrated as a mom of two. It was a moment of overwhelming gratitude, realizing how deeply my daughters have enriched my life. They are my greatest blessings, and I truly can’t imagine life without them.
WHAT DOES RAISING YOUR DAUGHTERS IN YOUR HUSBAND’S HOMETOWN MEAN, AND WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOM ACTIVITY IN THE SYV?
I fell in love with the SYV thirteen years ago, and over time, I realized how much Mike (my husband) valued the place he was raised by how he spoke about his friendships and childhood memories. It’s incredibly reassuring to raise my daughters in a town that holds so much history for our family. I’m grateful to give them the opportunity to grow up in a community that truly embodies the values of supporting one another, loving your neighbor, and living simply. The Valley’s close-knit, small-town atmosphere is a gift I’ll always cherish.
As for my favorite mom activity, does live music count? My love for live music was passed down from my mom, and there’s something magical about enjoying it with my daughters. In the SYV, we’re fortunate to have year-round opportunities to hear incredible talent with beautiful backdrops—whether it’s country hills, Lake Cachuma, or a vineyard. There’s nothing quite like dancing with my girls to some live tunes on a sunny Saturday afternoon with a drink in hand!

HOW HAS BEING BORN AND RAISED IN THE VALLEY SHAPED YOUR PERSPECTIVE AS A MOTHER AND A BUSINESS OWNER, AND WHAT DOES MOTHER’S DAY MEAN TO YOU?
Growing up in the SYV, this place is in my bones. While it has evolved, its heart and soul remain unchanged, and my love for the land and community runs deep. After living in Chicago and Scandinavia, I chose to return—not just for the sunshine, but to raise my children in a place that truly feels like home. As a mother, I cherish the safe, close-knit childhood my kids are experiencing, just as I did.
As a photographer, it’s an incredible privilege to capture the beauty of this valley and the people who make it special. Whether documenting weddings of kids I once babysat, celebrating local businesses, or preserving family legacies, I feel honored to tell my community’s stories.
Mother’s Day still feels surreal, but in many ways, every day is Mother’s Day—filled with small victories, shared challenges, and love. I’m also deeply grateful for the wisdom and support of my mom and mothers-in-law, which has given me an even greater appreciation for motherhood across generations.
A CURATED COLLECTION OF VINTAGE JEWELRY, WESTERN COLLECTIBLES, AND TIMELESS CRAFTSMANSHIP IN SANTA YNEZ
Nestled in the heart of Santa Ynez, where Old West charm meets modern elegance, Charlotte’s of Santa Ynez is more than a boutique—it’s a curated celebration of history, artistry, and craftsmanship. Owned and thoughtfully assembled by Charlotte herself, the shop has become a destination for discerning collectors, offering an exquisite selection of vintage Native American jewelry, Mexican silver, and Western collectibles.

“ THE INVENTORY IS EXPANSIVE, SO IT’S HARD NOT TO FIND WHAT YOU’RE LOOKING FOR! ”
Charlotte’s journey into fine jewelry and antiques began with her husband’s Santa Ynez Saddlery, which she managed for five years. While the saddle shop was essential to the Valley, Charlotte was drawn to curating unique pieces—silver bits, spurs, romals, reatas, art, and, most notably, vintage jewelry. “The saddle shop was definitely a needed business in the Valley, but it was a challenge to keep staffed and manage, so I took all of the fun inventory out of there and opened Charlotte’s of Santa Ynez,” shares Charlotte.
Stepping inside, Charlotte notes, “I have a customer who calls it ‘the happy
play place.’ I encourage people to try pieces on, play with them, and bring in their own jewelry that they are trying to match. The inventory is expansive, so it’s hard not to find what you’re looking for!” The boutique’s warm, inviting atmosphere encourages visitors to explore, try on pieces, and even bring in their own jewelry to find the perfect match. Charlotte’s deep appreciation for history is woven into every piece she selects, from classic turquoise cuffs to rare artifacts like an Apache necklace from the mid-to-late 1800s, crafted from red mud beads and repurposed brass
cavalry buttons—a testament to resilience and tradition.
Beyond its cultural significance, Charlotte’s embodies the Santa Ynez Valley’s signature style. Since the 1940s, ranchers returning from Arizona have brought back handcrafted Native American jewelry, making turquoise an enduring local fashion staple. Today, Charlotte’s honors that legacy, offering everything from $12 stud earrings to $6,000 concho belts, ensuring something for every admirer of fine craftsmanship.
Elevating the boutique experience, Charlotte collaborates with Southwestern artisans and hosts a bi-monthly tasting series featuring local wineries, distilleries, and breweries.
This May, she welcomes Casa del Sol, a premium Mexican-made tequila, for an evening of fine spirits and community gathering. Adding to the charm, her husband, renowned horseman Ramon Becerra, will offer complimentary carriage rides through the Valley, making the event a true celebration of heritage and hospitality.
For those with an eye for the exquisite and a love of storytelling, Charlotte’s of Santa Ynez is a must-visit destination, where every piece carries a history, and every visit is an adventure in discovery.
Visit Charlotte’s of SY at 3547 Sagunto Street to experience it yourself.
From the very beginning, the girls faced significant challenges, dealing with injuries and illness. Despite these setbacks, they never wavered in their determination. Their primary goal was to reach the CIF Semi-finals, and when they achieved that, the excitement was palpable. But the journey didn’t end there. The girls pushed harder and, after a thrilling victory, earned a spot in the CIF Finals. They could not have been prouder.
The team worked tirelessly throughout the season to maintain their strength, endurance, and chemistry. Their hard work paid off, as they not only overcame obstacles but truly became a cohesive unit, supporting each other every step of the way.
The girls’ first home state tournament game was nothing short of spectacular, beginning with an electric atmosphere and a packed house. They battled through some injuries and then faced Grenada Hills. Although the Pirates faced a challenging opponent with four key players injured, the team gave everything they had. The girls played hard, but their amazing postseason run ended in the second round of the state tournament.
Coach Jennifer Rasmuessen reflected on how proud she was of this year’s team and their accomplishments this season: “Their resilience, grit, and teamwork were inspiring, and this journey will stay with them forever.” Now, coach Rasmussen has shifted towards the future: “We are ready to start training for next year, and we look forward to another successful season for our Lady Pirates!”
