Kids & Pets
This issue has been such an enjoyable edition to prepare. Simply because of the immense joy that children bring to their families and the significant impact they make on their communities. Children are not merely the hope for a brighter tomorrow, they are the foundation upon which our future stands. Their innocence, curiosity, and unlimited potential have the power to shape the world in ways we can only imagine. Our children represent our hardest work, greatest pleasure, and most important investment.
As our summer break winds down and the back-to-school prep begins, this time of year I always reminisce on how “magical” summer was during my elementary, middle, and high school years. Now as a mother, I realize how much work actually went into the “break”. It amazes me how the respect for my parents and the parental figures around us grow with each passing season. It is not always easy, but parenting is always our greatest accomplishment. We prepare each issue nearly 2 months in advance, and as I am writing this letter, summer just began! Now looking forward to August, summer will soon turn to fall which is hard to wrap my “mom brain” around.
Secondarily, who could forget our pets? The bond between a pet and its owner is a special kind of companionship that is transformative for children and adults alike. The bond between kids and their furry, feathery, or scaley friends is often one of the deepest and most meaningful relationships in a young life. My loving husband “allowed” us to adopt a puppy over Mother’s Day weekend which has brought so much joy into the entire DeMarcus household. Mind you, we now have 3 dogs and 2 young boys; our home feels closer to a zoo every day.
At the heart of this theme lies a deeper appreciation for the future of our community. Our children are not only the inheritors of our traditions but also the architects of tomorrow’s dreams. Both our children and our pets teach us patience, resilience, and unconditional love, reminding us to cherish the simple moments and embrace the spirit of playfulness that unites us all. Together, let us continue to nurture a future where compassion, kindness, and the spirit of togetherness flourish.
Cheers,
August 2024

Equestrian Lifestyle Embracing the
A PASSION FOR ANIMALS AND COMMUNITY
Nestled in the serenity of the Santa Ynez Valley, where the rolling hills meet the azure skies, resides a community that embraces great wine, hard work, and the art of savoring life’s pleasures. The equestrian culture in the SYV runs deep and strong, with Kristina Novak, founder of Monument Global, serving as a beacon of passion for animals, a business owner, an avid equestrian, and a beloved member of our local community.
Kristina’s household is a bustling haven of furry and hoofed companionship. With three dogs and three horses of her own, plus her daughter’s pets, there is never a shortage of love or laughter. Sammy, the wise Labrador at eleven years old, Sneaker and Maya, the playful Pugs aged four and two respectively, and Skylar, the gentle Samoyed at nine years old, keep the household lively. Alongside them are Wendy, Sushi, and Crush, her cherished Warmblood horses, each with their spirited personalities.
Kristina’s journey into the equestrian world began at the age of three, ignited by her fascination with horses. Raised with a deep-seated passion for animals, she initially rode western style before discovering her love for Hunter Jumpers later in life, a sport she enthusiastically embraced at thirty-seven. Embracing the challenge of learning something new as an adult, Kristina found herself drawn to the grace and precision of Hunter Jumpers, finding joy in mastering new skills. Her journey stands as a testament to the belief that passion knows no age limits, and that the pursuit of new experiences can continually enrich our lives.
Kristina paints a vibrant picture of the Santa Ynez Valley’s equestrian culture, blending Western traditions with the elegance of Hunter Jumpers and the precision of dressage. Here, Thoroughbreds
and sturdy Quarter Horses graze alongside graceful Spanish gaited breeds like the Paso Fino and Peruvian Paso. Athletic Warmbloods shine in competitive show jumping and dressage, attracting dedicated riders and breeders alike. This diverse landscape reflects a deep-seated passion for horses, rooted in the region’s rich history and embraced by a community united in their admiration for these magnificent animals.
Beyond the variety of disciplines and breeds, the SYV is characterized by a community united by its profound admiration for horses. Enthusiasts from all walks of life converge here, sharing a common passion that transcends age, background, and experience level. Whether bonding over trail rides through scenic vineyards, competing in local shows, or attending educational clinics with renowned trainers, residents and visitors alike find solace and inspiration in the presence of these magnificent creatures.
The equestrian culture in the SYV is not merely a pastime but a way of life, fostering connections and friendships that span generations. It embodies a commitment to preserving traditions while embracing innovation, ensuring that the Valley remains a cherished haven for horse lovers from near and far.
For Kristina, the joy her animals bring is boundless. “Everything about them brings me joy,” she shares. “Their genuine kindness and unconditional love teach us invaluable lessons every day.” As a parent, Kristina acknowledges the profound impact her pets have had on her parenting skills. “Raising children alongside animals teaches empathy, hard work, and the importance of boundaries,” she reflects, underscoring the nurturing environment her pets provide.
“Raising children alongside animals teaches empathy, hard work, and the importance of boundaries”
Kristina notes that while a ranch is ideal for those who wish to keep horses at home, many Valley residents opt for boarding facilities. “The Santa Ynez Valley offers a range of options from small ranchettes to expansive properties,” she explains, making it accessible for all animal lovers.
Kristina offers insightful advice for newcomers enamored with the idea of embracing pets or horses in their new home: “Embrace every moment, from the joys to the inevitable cleanup. The love they give is always worth it.”
In conclusion, Kristina embodies the essence of a life well-lived in SYV—where passion for animals meets a deep-seated love for community and a relentless commitment to hard work. Her journey from avid equestrian to esteemed real estate agent is a testament to the enriching impact of pursuing one’s passions wholeheartedly. Kristina remains an inspiration, showcasing the balance between achieving professional success and upholding unwavering dedication to personal passions, all while fostering meaningful connections within her community.

Insight from the Santa Ynez Valley City Lifestyle Team
ARTICLE BY MATT DEMARCUS
MATT: WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU HAVE RECEIVED AND WOULD WANT TO SHARE WITH THE YOUNGER GENERATION?
Sara: A simple question can go so far... “What can I help you with?” Listen and respond appropriately. Treat others the way you want to be treated. It means the world!
MATT: IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 12 YEAR OLD SELF ANYTHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Sara: Work hard, stay focused, and do what you say you are going to do... every day. Such a simple concept yet many people find it hard to do and especially hard to do consistently.
MATT: WHO DO YOU ADMIRE MOST AND WHY?
Sara: My parents. They are the epitome of living by example. There are things you want to do, and things you gotta do... the sooner we get started the sooner we get done. They taught my brother and I how important it is to work hard and be honest. I can hear them now, “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard!”

H A T ’S YOU R FAVO R I
WThere is something so special about a place where people grow up, leave, spread their wings, and eventually find their way back home. The sense of community in a place like this is unique, and special, and must be protected. The Santa Ynez Valley is a community like this and even more so, that is what Ron Alex, owner of Corner House Cafe, strives to create. The traditional high school graduate ventures off to college or to travel abroad gains a handful of years worth of life experience, and then typically makes his or her way back home to the SYV to establish roots and build a family. With that in mind, we wanted to ask a handful of SYV local youth what their favorite places around town are!

PAST. PRESENT. FUTURE. PIRATE ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
August - Dallas DeForest - Good Luck at USMMA!
In the elite world of athletics, where prowess meets determination, August’s spotlight shines brightly on Dallas DeForest, a name synonymous with both gridiron glory and diamond finesse. Standing at 5’6” and weighing in at 165lbs, Dallas epitomizes the adage that dynamite comes in small packages. His journey to the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), where he’ll command the field as a slot back, is as remarkable as it is inspiring. Dallas’s path to USMMA was paved with unwavering dedication and exceptional talent. Recruited during his junior year by the USMMA’s Offensive Coordinator, his agility and strategic finesse perfectly suited the Academy’s triple-option offense. However, securing a spot at USMMA wasn’t just about physical prowess—it required a Congressional Nomination, a rigorous process including essays, references, and panel interviews. Dallas’s endorsement by Congressman Salud Carbajal of California’s 24th District marked him as one of the few chosen from a highly competitive field. Beyond his gridiron achievements, Dallas’s impact transcends the field. A role model for young athletes in his community, he embodies excellence both on and off the turf. His accolades as a two-sport star—Football and Baseball—speak volumes: from multiple All-League and All-Area distinctions to being named Team MVP and earning the Dalton Payne Leather Helmet Award, Dallas’s achievements are a testament to his leadership and skill. In the realm of Baseball, Dallas’s prowess is equally formidable. A four-year varsity letterman and record holder for most hit-by-pitches, he boasts a .383 batting average, 22 RBIs, and a flawless fielding percentage in his senior year alone. His achievements extend beyond sports, with an outstanding GPA of 4.36, numerous academic honors, and recognition as a Scholar-Athlete. Dallas plans to major in Maritime Logistics and Security, setting his sights on a career in the maritime industry or, potentially, active duty in the United States Marine Corps. As August’s Athlete of the Month, Dallas DeForest stands as a beacon of achievement, embodying the essence of dedication, leadership, and athletic prowess. His journey, from the gridiron to the sea, serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes and scholars alike, proving that with unwavering determination, the sky—or perhaps the horizon—is truly the limit.
Honor the Past. Represent the Present. Prepare the Future.
