Lifestyle Letter: The Backyard Expedition

If you’re anything like me, your car currently looks as if a tornado of spilled Gatorade, Lake Erie sand, and SPF 50 destroyed it. Welcome to July in the Sandusky Bay, the month where we all collectively decide that sleep is optional and flip-flops are formalwear.

Our theme this month is Explore, and I’ll be honest, I used to think “exploring” meant booking a flight and heading somewhere with a different area code. But the longer I live here, the more I realize that we are living in the place everyone else is trying to get to. We’re the ones who get to see the Cedar Point skyline every time we run to the grocery store. We’re the ones who can decide on a whim to catch a sunset over the Islands just because the Tuesday evening air feels right.

This month, I’m challenging myself (and you!) to actually be a tourist in our own town. It’s so easy to get caught up in the “busy-ness” of July, the endless double-headers at the ballfields, the Fourth of July prep, and the frantic pace of summer chores. But when was the last time you actually stopped to look at the lighthouse? When was the last time you hopped on a boat, and let the lake wind completely ruin your hair?

There’s a specific kind of magic in our backyard trips. It’s in the chaotic joy of a local parade, the taste of a ice cream that definitely wasn’t on your diet, and that feeling when the humidity finally breaks during a late-night game at the sports park. These are the moments we’ll be thinking about in February when we’re shoveling the driveway, so why not lean into them now?

Let’s make a deal, let the grass grow an extra inch this week. Leave the dishes in the sink for an hour. Go find a hidden trail you’ve never walked, or take the long way home along the water. July is notoriously short-lived, but the memories we make in these few weeks are what carry us through the year.

Our backyard is vast, the fireflies are out, and the lake is calling. I’ll see you out there, probably a waiting for a ferry or with my toes in the sand.

Stay curious (and definitely stay hydrated),

Through Mary’s Eyes

A Local’s Guide to the North Coast

When you think about the Sandusky Bay area, a few things probably pop into your head right away: the water, the islands, and the roller coasters. But for those of us who live and work here, there’s another local staple that’s just as important to the community: Mary Giles. As a Sandusky native and a self-described “one-woman welcoming committee,” Mary doesn’t just live in town, she knows every street, every shortcut, and every story that’s shaped our area over the years.

Since our theme for July is Explore, it felt like the perfect time to sit down with someone who has spent her whole life learning the ins and outs of our Islands, Huron, Erie and Ottawa counties. For Mary, “exploring” isn’t about looking for a new spot on a map. It’s about really getting to know the heart of our community, finding the groups that keep us going, and understanding what makes each neighborhood feel like home.

The Best of the Bay

To understand why Mary is so good at what she does, you have to understand

how much she loves her own backyard. July on the North Coast is the best time of year. You’ve got the lake breeze, live music down by the pier, and that busy, happy energy that comes with summer. Mary’s guide to the area starts with the local spots that make living here feel like a permanent vacation.

If you’re looking to treat yourself, Mary’s first suggestion is always Crush Wine Bar in downtown Sandusky. “It’s 100% my happy place,” she says. She loves the energy of the staff and the fact that you can get a high-end experience without it feeling stuffy. But she also knows the practical side of our towns. Whether you need a quiet corner in a local coffee shop to knock out a to-do list or a professional recording studio to get into “boss mode” and make some content, Mary knows exactly where to go.

When the workday is finally over, Mary’s version of exploring usually leads her back to the water. July is the perfect time for a girls’ night out, and we’re lucky to have so many great options nearby. From watching the sunset at the yacht club to taking a

quick drive out to some of our local estate wineries or dining out, Mary knows that you don’t have to go far to find a spot that feels world-class.

Supporting the Roots of Our Community

What really makes Mary stand out in the real estate world isn’t just her ability to sell a house, it’s how much she cares about the community itself. She doesn’t just look at a building; she sees the families, the schools, and the organizations that turn a street into a real neighborhood.

Mary spends a lot of her time working with groups like Shores & Islands Ohio and The Greater Sandusky Partnership. She’s always pushing for the kind of growth that will keep our area thriving for our kids and grandkids. You’ll see that passion

firsthand through her philanthropic work by donating, volunteering, or giving back in some capacity. You may even run into her at Party on the Pier as she loves to sponsor a day of entertainment. To Mary, seeing everyone gathered by the water for a summer concert is what makes this area so special.

She’s also a huge supporter of our local teachers who she calls the real “rockstars” of the community. She knows that a strong town is built on the people who take care of their neighbors. This mindset is built right into her business; she isn’t just selling a property; she’s helping people join the community she’s so proud of.

The Mary Giles Difference:  It’s Personal

When clients work with Mary, they gain more than a real estate professional, they gain a local advocate who understands

CONTINUED >

how to connect them with the community around them. Her approach focuses on helping buyers and sellers make informed decisions while ensuring they feel welcomed, supported, and positioned for long-term success.

Mary recognizes that purchasing a home is often about more than the property itself; it’s about creating the lifestyle her clients envision. By simplifying the search process and providing thoughtful guidance, she allows her clients to focus on what matters most, building the life they want to live. She takes the stress out of the “where” so her clients can focus on the “how”, how they’re going to live their best life in our area.

An Invitation to Join Us

For Mary, a successful real estate transaction extends far beyond the closing

table. It represents the beginning of a new chapter and an opportunity for her clients. It’s an invitation to become part of a community she has spent a lifetime supporting and strengthening. She’s the bridge between a “house” and a “home,” helping every client find their own piece of the lakefront dream.

So this July, take a page out of Mary’s book: go to a concert on the pier, grab a glass of wine at your favorite local spot, take a tour of our amazing region and never stop exploring this awesome place we get to call home. Whether you’re relocating, investing, downsizing, or searching for your forever home, Mary is dedicated to helping you discover your own piece of the North Coast lifestyle, and all the opportunities that come with it.

The 10% Target Mindset

Jen Cohen ON THE PRACTICE OF ASKING FOR WHAT YOU WANT

Winnipeg in the winter, and a 17-year-old waits 45 minutes in the cold for Keanu Reeves. Her fingers are numb. She is not there for an autograph. She is there to ask him to appear in her audition tape for MuchMusic, Canada’s MTV. When he finally agrees, she writes her number on a gum wrapper with a borrowed lip liner.

He calls days later.

That 17-year-old was Jen Cohen — fitness expert, host of the Habits & Hustle podcast, and best-selling author. She has built a career on the premise her frostbitten afternoon proved. She calls the practice the 10% Target: 10 attempts at whatever you want most in life.

The premise is simple. Most people never make one attempt. Almost nobody makes two. The math works in favor of the person who keeps going.

The top-rated Habits & Hustle podcast has logged hundreds of conversations with high performers and the people who study what the body does to the mind. Her TEDx talk, The Secret to Getting Anything You Want in Life, has traveled widely inside Fortune 500 sales-training rooms. On the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Cohen sits down to share the working rules that are the foundation of her latest book, Bigger, Better, Bolder.

“You have to be the CEO of your own life.”

MAKE TEN ATTEMPTS

The door opens, or another door does. The unmade attempt and the refused one leave you in the same place — except one of them teaches you something.

STACK THE DECK

Cohen frames her habits as a wager: How do I stack the deck so I win more than I lose? The workout happens first, and the food decisions follow. The email follow-up gets sent, and the answer arrives. The choices compound in a single direction.

3

DISCIPLINE IS A PRACTICED SKILL, NOT AN INHERITANCE

No one is born with it. The people who look disciplined are running a routine they have rehearsed long enough that it no longer feels like effort. The reps are the skill. Miss them, and the skill fades, the same as any other.

4

SELF-TALK ONLY WORKS WHEN THE BODY BACKS IT UP

Confidence does not arrive by repeating the word. It arrives after the body has done the thing — the workout finished, the cold walk endured, the email sent. The mind takes its cues from what the body proves it can do. Talk follows action, not the other way around.

5

NEVER MISS A MONDAY

The first decision sets the slope of the rest. Skip the Monday workout, and the rest of the week tends to follow. Hold the line on Monday, and the slope tilts the other way.

Graduated and Ready to Explore

How Erie County CASA Changed the Game for Caleb

Turning 18 and graduating high school is an exciting time, but for youth in the foster care system, it can also be incredibly daunting. Nationwide, over 15,000 young people age out of foster care each year. Without a stable support system, these young adults face a steep uphill battle, making them statistically more likely to experience homelessness, unemployment, and a lack of academic achievement.

But this June, Erie County is celebrating a massive victory. Meet Caleb, a resilient high school graduate who is 100% ready to start exploring what his future holds.

A MESSY ROAD TO SUCCESS

Caleb’s journey wasn’t easy. Entering the foster care system at just 13 years old, his case was complicated and filled with a harsh reality. To add to the challenge, Caleb manages type 2 diabetes, a medical condition requiring strict consistency, which is notoriously hard to find within the foster care system. When cases are this complex, a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) is vital to step in, look out for the child’s best interests, and ensure their medical and emotional needs aren’t overlooked. Unfortunately, due to a shortage of local staff and volunteers, Caleb’s assignment was delayed by six

months, leaving him to navigate the system entirely alone during that critical time before finally receiving his dedicated CASA worker.

When Erie County CASA Executive Director Terri Stephan was able to step in as his volunteer, everything changed. A CASA volunteer is strictly there for the child, fighting for their best interests when the court system gets overwhelming. Caleb remembers how Terri encouraged him to speak up, helped him understand his rights, and navigated the complicated legal waters alongside him.

BRIDGING THE GAP TO ADULTHOOD

As Caleb approached 18, he faced a critical choice. Statistics show that for every year a youth stays in extended foster care past 18, their chance of graduating high school jumps by 8%, and their risk of homelessness drops by 19%.

Terri worked with Caleb as a true partner to plan his future. She connected him with various programs that would ensure he had access to the medical and independent living resources he needs to manage his health and his life as an adult. Today, Caleb is happily maintaining his job at Walmart while keeping his eyes on learning a trade. He is eager to explore stable, hands-on career paths, looking into specialized fields like plumbing, welding, and electrical work. He might not know his exact destination yet, but with a growing interest in how things work and a desire for financial independence, he now has the tools to succeed and the confidence to explore all the career options adulthood can offer him.

THE URGENT NEED FOR VOLUNTEERS

Caleb is proof that a CASA volunteer changes the entire trajectory of a child’s life. Unfortunately, there are simply not enough voices to go around. Right now, the Erie County CASA Program is trying to advocate for 92 abused and neglected children with only 18 active volunteers. We need neighbors like you to help rewrite these stories. Becoming a volunteer requires a screening process, 30 hours of pre-service training, and two courtroom observations. Training is offered twice a year and is flexibly scheduled around the needs of the attendees.

You don’t need a background in law or social work, just a heart for kids like Caleb who deserve someone in their corner. This July, as we celebrate exploration, consider helping a local child explore a brighter future. Contact Erie County CASA today to volunteer.

Birdwatching Made Simple

EXPERT TIPS TO MAKE BACKYARD BIRDING A FASCINATING AND PEACEFUL PART OF YOUR LIFE.

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Thinking of putting up a bird feeder? You’re not alone. Backyard birding is the second most popular hobby in the U.S.—right behind gardening. Bob Gors of Wild Birds Unlimited in Macomb, MI, shares expert tips to help you get started—and get results.

START WITH THE RIGHT SETUP

If you’re new to bird feeding, don’t overcomplicate it. Bob recommends starting with a tray feeder, either pole-mounted or hung. “It’s accessible to the widest range of birds,” he says, “and it lets you experiment with different seed blends.”

Before setting up, take a look at your yard. Birds prefer to feed near trees or shrubs where they can perch and scan for predators. “If your yard is wide open, it’s going to be harder to attract them,” Bob notes.

Quick Tip: Place your feeder about 15 feet from trees or shrubs to give birds a safe place to wait their turn.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT SEED—AND SKIP THE FILLERS

Not all bird seed is created equal. Bob advises avoiding blends with fillers like milo, wheat, or oats. “Those are agricultural leftovers. Most birds won’t eat them.”

Each Wild Birds Unlimited store owner customizes their seed blends, based on the birds in each store’s specific area. Their blends contain no fillers—just high-quality ingredients birds actually eat. They’re available in no-mess varieties—no shells, no waste. “With standard seed, up to 40% of the weight of the bag is shells,” Bob says. “No-mess is 100 percent pure bird food.”

Quick Tip: Choose fresh, unscented, unflavored seed. Birds don’t need additives—just what they’d eat in nature. Check the ingredients on the bag: sunflower should be the first ingredient—since it’s the seed most birds love.

IT’S REMAINED PART OF THEIR LIVES: ONE COUPLE TOLD BOB THEY STILL START EVERY MORNING ON THE PORCH WITH COFFEE AND BIRDSONG. “IT BECAME A RITUAL THAT

KEEP UNWANTED GUESTS AWAY

Squirrels causing trouble? Try safflower seed. “It tastes bitter to squirrels but attracts cardinals, grosbeaks, titmice, nuthatches and chickadees,” Bob says. Hot pepper blends also work—birds can’t taste the heat, but mammals can.

To deter large birds like starlings, Bob recommends using a cage around tube feeders to limit access. Tube feeders with small perches help discourage bigger birds. For tidier feeding, seed cylinders— compressed seed—are a great low-mess option.

Quick Tip: “Start simple,” Bob advises. “Watch what’s happening in your yard, then adjust as needed.” Unlike loose seed, cylinders make the birds work harder—and give you longer-lasting views of the birds.

SPOT BIRD BEHAVIOR (AND BACKYARD DRAMA)

Once your feeder’s up, the show begins.

“Different species act differently,” Bob explains. “Cardinals are typically the first and last birds of the day to the feeder. Male hummingbirds are very territorial and will defend ‘their’ feeder. Chickadees come to the feeder in a flash; they have a grab-and-go strategy. “In our backyard, orioles and bluebirds battle over live mealworms,” he adds. “The female bluebird often holds her ground.”

Quick Tip: You don’t need to track every species. “Just sit back with a cup of coffee and watch,” Bob says. “You’ll start noticing more than you’d expect.” CONTINUED >

SEASONAL CHANGES TO EXPECT

Feeder activity increases in summer, thanks to fledglings. “By July, your bird population has basically doubled,” Bob says. At the same time, some favorites— like male orioles—start their fall migration as early as July.

One common myth? That goldfinches leave in winter. “They stay put,” Bob says. “But the males molt into drab-colored feathers, so people often don’t recognize them.”

Quick Tip: Keep feeding in winter. “Some of the best bird watching happens in the colder months—different species of birds visit us in the winter.”

HOW TO ATTRACT SPECIFIC BIRDS

Want cardinals? Use tray feeders or tube feeders with U-shaped perches. “They’re heavier birds,” Bob says. “Standard tube feeders are hard for them to use.”

Hoping for bluebirds? They prefer parklike settings. If your yard fits, try a nesting box with a 1.5-inch entrance, and offer live mealworms far away from the nest box.

Hummingbirds? Stick to sugar water— no red dye needed. “And expect a show,” Bob adds. “Males are fiercely territorial at the feeder.”

Wild Birds Unlimited carries feeders tailored to specific birds, but Bob and his team focus on fit. “We ask about your yard, your goals, and guide you from there.”

Quick Tip: Not sure what birds are in your area? Ask your local Wild Birds Unlimited shop.

WHY BIRD WATCHING STICKS

Bob says many customers started birding during the pandemic—and never stopped. “They looked out the window and realized something was there,” he says. It’s remained part of their lives: one couple told Bob they still start every morning on the porch with coffee and birdsong. “It became a ritual that many people now cherish,” Bob says.

THE TASTE OF BEACH GLASS LOUNGE

A Signature Summer Pairing

THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE SIP

The Cucumber Gin Spritz was created at Beach Glass Lounge during our search for the perfect summer cocktail, something light, vibrant, and full of seasonal flavor. As we experimented with bright ingredients, the combination of cucumber, elderflower, lime, and prosecco quickly became an instant favorite.

The experience of this cocktail actually begins before you take your first sip. The bright green color sets the stage, immediately showing off the fresh, botanical ingredients waiting inside. The drink’s appearance directly reflects its flavor profile as the

vibrant look promises a crisp beverage, perfectly matching the cool cucumber and clean effervescence in the glass.

This profile was exactly what we envisioned for warm days on our Whitecaps Outdoor Bar, but it was the beautiful green color that truly made it special. The shade instantly reminded us of the polished pieces of beach glass that wash up along the shores of Lake Erie, inspiring a drink that captures both the flavors and spirit of summer on the coast. Every sip is a tribute to the lake, the season, and the beauty that surrounds us here at Beach Glass Lounge.

THE PERFECT SUMMER MENU PAIRING

When you’re dining at Beach Glass Lounge this July, the culinary exploration doesn’t stop at the edge of your glass. To experience the very best of our seasonal menu, a great pairing option is the Cucumber Gin Spritz alongside our signature, house-made crab cakes.

Crafted daily by our kitchen, these premium crab cakes are packed with sweet, tender lump crab meat, delicately seasoned with fresh herbs, and pan-seared to achieve a flawless, golden crust.

The pairing itself is pure coastal magic. The crisp cucumber, floral elderflower, and vibrant citrus notes of the spritz cut through the rich, savory depth of the seafood, while the cocktail’s delicate prosecco sparkle cleanses the palate between every single bite. It is a harmonious balance of texture and taste as the sweet crab and crispy crust finding their perfect match in a light, botanical sip. Whether you are winding down after a day on the water or kicking off an unforgettable evening out, this combination is hands-down one of our absolute favorite summer pairings.

Stop into Beach Glass Lounge this season to let our team craft one perfectly for you!

THE RECIPE DESCRIPTION

Light, crisp, and refreshingly botanical, our signature Cucumber Gin Spritz combines a juniper-forward gin, fresh house-made cucumber juice, elderflower, and prosecco for a delicate sparkle.
