The word "salubrious" means favorable to health or well-being. This passage from

Lindsay Linegar, Gina Siebert,

Emerson's famous poem Merlin's Song, is most often quoted without the final word

Lisa Whittemore, Lisa Brill, Dorian Knapp

- salubrity; to the reader's detriment. Not only does this one little word give greater significance to the wild air one drinks, it also rhymes with "sea"!   Like this passage, there is so much more to summer in San Clemente than typically

meets the eye. It's true our city streets buzz with warmth and possibility, and our coastline and pier host thousands  of happy  feet in the summertime. But that's not where our summer's beauty ends. Take plein air painting, for example. Have you ever walked along the beach trail and noticed an easel propped up in the sand, with an artist hard at work? If you saw someone painting the pier at the end of June, it's likely they were participating in the 17th annual Paint San Clemente event. This issue features  Mary Scott, this year's Chairman and regular participant of Paint San Clemente. Scott talks challenges and joys of painting plein air, among other things.  San Clemente is also swimming in salubrious youth. Through organizations like Lion's

COMFORTING, CASUAL & WELCOMING DESIGN Within walking distance to the beach, Design Consultant, Carolyn Hall expertly coordinated cabinets and quartzite countertops, enhancing the homes natural warmth and liveliness. Natural light is a great asset to design and we always encourage our clients to take advantage of windows and skylights. Â In the kitchen, a textured apron front sink and geometric tile backsplash put an original twist on a relatable, home-style design. The gorgeous pairing of hardwood and tile flooring offers visual interest while purposefully defining the kitchen, distinguishing space within the flowing floorplan.

A PLACE FOR PRIVACY Venturing into the master bathroom, we find ultra-chic barn doors concealing a walk-in closet. Barn doors add visual interest and style to an ordinary doorway and, in a narrow space similar to this hallway, can be a style alternative to a pocket door. With welcomed elements of transitional style, this master bathroom provides a unique sanctuary where our clients start and end each day. Because our client enjoy taking a soak after a long day, Sea Pointe Construction reworked this master bathroom to allow for this super-sleek freestanding tub. A floating natural wood double vanity paired with contemporary fixtures is the perfect middle ground between this bathroom’s transitional style and the natural design aesthetic found throughout the rest of the home. Mixing four different tiles, this harmonious tile design brings a subtle style to the space.

SPACE TO COME TOGETHER On track with our clients’ dream of their family home, Sea Pointe Construction removed the walls that once separated the kitchen from the eating and living spaces. This open floor plan allows for the feeling of designated areas without members of the family feeling closed off from one another. Now, those prepping food, eating or relaxing can do so with the feeling of togetherness. This airy flow works in tandem with the illusion of grandeur set by the vaulted ceilings, making this home feel larger.

clemente 2018 FEATURING ARTIST, MARY SCOTT ARTICLE LINDSAY LINEGAR | PHOTOGRAPHY GIA LUCIANO

THE 17TH ANNUAL PAINT SAN CLEMENTE HAPPENED AT THE END OF JUNE, STARTING WITH THE QUICK DRAW ON JUNE 23RD. For three hours, plein air painters painted different scenes around the San Clemente Art Gallery, Del Mar and the pier bowl for the Quick Draw. Congratulations to George Trimm for winning the competition, and to everyone who participated. Each year, the San Clemente Art Association puts on the exciting Paint San Clemente event. A maximum of 100 painters create a buzz in the heart of San Clemente, setting up their easels around town. Many of the artists enjoy painting the pier, the ocean and various architectural treasures throughout the city. This year’s chairman of Paint San Clemente, Mary Scott, with the exception of the Quick Draw, was also a participant. Scott, also chairman of the San Clemente Art Gallery, has been painting for 10 years and has been part of the San Clemente Art Association for five. Having provided two beautiful covers for San Clemente Lifestyle Magazine already - in December 2017 and July 2018 - we were thrilled to talk with and learn more about the artist. Scott used to draw as a child but says she lost touch with it over time. Ever inspired by her brother, Don Dixon, she got back into art as an adult. Scott loves bright colors and the ocean, both of which provide inspiration for her paintings. Spending Saturdays boogie boarding in Newport Beach as a child is part of what nurtured her love for the ocean. Along with her husband and two boys, Scott relocated to San Clemente from San Diego about six years ago. She has found San Clemente to be a place with plenty of pretty subjects to paint, from interesting architecture to breathtaking views of the ocean. Though these scenes make up much of her artwork, Scott also enjoys painting other subjects like guitars, cars and chickens. Some of her work also portrays themes around fantasy and space. She says the bright colors she uses might not be traditional in the art world, but she gets joy from them. “I like the viewer to look at my paintings and feel happy,” says Scott. “I like to make my images fun.” Currently, Scott is looking forward to trying out pastels. She has typically used acrylic, oil and airbrushing for her work, but she wants to play around with something different. She wants to take classes from a friend at the SC Art Gallery, and be able to better participate in sessions with a Sketch Group at the gallery. Scott says it usually takes her around three hours to complete a painting, while the others in the group finish in two.

LOCAL LIMELIGHT

(CON TI N U ED)

While painting in the 2018 Paint San Clemente event, Scott spent about three hours on each painting as well. She spent her time either on the north or south side of the pier, in the sand. Scott always enjoys painting the pier, with waves and people in the foreground. She receives much praise for the detail in her waves, especially with the seafoam. For the event, Scott used oil paints. She says oil gives more blendability and takes longer to dry than acrylic. Oil also makes it easier to deal with the various elements that can stick to the painting. Painting plein air has its challenges and takes a lot of energy. All parts of the subject – the sun, tides, clouds, etc. – are ever changing. Even though challenging and tiring, Scott loves it. You can see her work on display regularly at the San Clemente Art Gallery. You can also visit MaryScottArt.com for more information on the artist.

FAIR DINKUM /

THE REAL 26

San Clemente Lifestyle | August 2018

TAKING INSPIRATION FROM AN AUSTRALIAN PHRASE MEANING TRUE, GENUINE OR "THE REAL DEAL"; MICHAEL LANZON HAS CREATED AN INVITING SPACE IN THE HEART OF DANA POINT. Originally from Australia, Lanzon envisioned Fair Dinkum Coffee and Beer Co. as a place where people could come to escape their daily routines and experience authenticity. “You know when you meet someone who is the true cool?” asks Lanzon. “He or she has this aura and style about them, they have a genuineness, they’re the ones you gravitate to. That’s fair dinkum.” Locals visit Fair Dinkum located at 34150 Pacific Coast Highway, to enjoy quality coffee, beer and organic food in a place that feels like their own, and welcomes their pets. When it comes to coffee, Lanzon says the team at Fair Dinkum spends the time to make sure to follow the right process, every time. Doing coffee well means building quality relationships with everyone from the farmers around the world, to you, the customer in south Orange County. Lanzon and the baristas of Fair Dinkum do not disappoint. Partnering with Take Flight Coffee Company, Lanzon ensures all of his coffee is fair dinkum – the real deal. On any given visit, you can ask a skilled and passionate barista to prepare something special from their selection of beverages. For something unique, try a pour over from the Democratic Republic of Congo. This coffee comes from the Muungano Cooperative and features notes of wild berry and tangerine. Fair Dinkum also serves lattes, cappuccinos, cortados, macchiatos, bulletproof coffee, cold brew coffee, and drip coffee, as well as non-coffee beverages such as chai, matcha and hot chocolate, as well as protein shakes. If it’s beer you’re after, this tap house regularly carries an impressive variety of craft beers from local and national breweries. There’s something for everyone, and some beers may challenge you to rethink your opinions and stretch your palette. For example, Lanzon says Mother Earth Boo Koo has a smooth taste even IPA haters will enjoy. There are plenty of interesting non-IPA options as well – blondes, ambers and pale-ales, among others. To complete your experience, try something from the delicious new food menu. Take a seat at one of the beautiful tile and wood tables, complete with fresh flowers to bring you a smile, and get ready for a treat. Accomplished chef, Michael Campbell creates simple yet refined dishes, daily. Try the Egg and Bacon Roll, Spinach and Egg White Wrap or the BBQ Shortrib Nachos for a refreshing and satisfying eat. There are also pastries, salads, acai bowls, and other items on offer. To top it all off, Fair Dinkum is pet-friendly. Sitting on the patio for just half an hour, you’re likely to see several regulars walk up with their friendly, furry sidekicks. Lanzon says there’s a girl in the neighborhood who walks her cat on a leash and stops in sometimes. Feel free to bring yours along when you visit and join in on the fun! This is a community space you don’t want to miss out on. With everything you need – quality coffee, beer and food, and plenty of space for your pet – Fair Dinkum is a place to be yourself and easily feel at home. OF COURSE, WE’RE CRUELTY-FREE ~ WE LOVE OUR FURRY FRIENDS TOO MUCH! At Qēt Botanicals, we’re all about plant-based skincare. We’re also passionate about cruelty-free ingredients. Qēt naturally offers relief to various skin complexions. That being said, our furry friends can sometimes have skin issues, too. Rather than slather on synthetics, we rely on our botanical treatments. We don’t test on animals, but sometimes we pamper our pets with a little Qēt. Meet Dodge, our 14 year-old Boston Terrier; Chance, our 12-ish year-old rescue;  and Posie, our two year-old Frenchie. Here are our favorite treatments (and theirs!) that we’ve shared with our furry friends: LAVENDER POWDER DRY SHAMPOO  ~ Organic powders and crushed lavender flowers help keep those wrinkles on those little noses and skin folds clean and dry. BALANCING TONING WATER WITH MELISSA, CUCUMBER AND ROSE GERANIUM ~ Ears are prone to catching debris, impurities, and even sand. This pH balanced water from botanicals cools and gently cleans the delicate ear fold. FRESH BODY OIL ~ Add a tiny amount to scaly feet and hot spots from bug bites or itchy skin to soothe chapped and irritated skin. These are some of our favorites that we’ve used on our own little critters. Of course, check with your vet for any medical concerns and test on small areas before use. This would be the only time that we would promote animal testing… on your own animals before pampering.  A furry friend can add sparkle to our lives ~ it’s important to feed them right and keep the synthetics off of their bodies and out of our environment. As the saying goes… “It’s not what we have in life, but who we have in our lives that matters.” This goes for feet and paws alike. Cheers to clean ingredients!
