With January comes some known and some not so well know holidays; be sure to celebrate them if at all possible. Besides the 1st being New Years Day, it's also National Hangover Day, be sure not to miss it. The 4th is National Spaghetti Day; who doesn't love a good plate of pasta? Dress Up Your Pet Day is celebrated on the 14th; how fun is that! Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday is celebrated on the third Monday, the 15th.

We were fortunate enough to sponsor Nuru, pictured in the article, and as I saw the outpouring of generosity from donors that evening, I wondered what more I could do to help out. An idea came to mind. We had featured Rainbow Sandals the previous month and learned about how they refurbish sandals and then donate them to children and adults alike. I called Herman from Rainbow Sandals right away and asked if we could get sandals for Small Steps for Compassion, and of course, he said yes. I introduced Shannin Pickle to Herman and we got sandals for the 25 girls. The town of

ASPECT OF HEALTHY LIVING. Without proper nutrition, you won’t have the energy needed to stay active, and/or your body won’t be nearly as susceptible to both minor and severe illness. Whether you’ve been an athlete for as long as you can remember, or just since you woke up the first of this year, it’s crucial to eat foods that will support your body’s recovery after your routine workouts. Here are a couple of recipes; one for the early bird, and another for the person who hits the gym at night.

San Clemente Lifestyle | January 2018
THE HOLIDAYS ARE FESTIVE, FAMILIAL AND INDULGENT. So, as the new year gets started, people across the country vow to improve themselves. Most commonly, they resolve to lead healthier lifestyles, and undo all of the gluttony and leisure associated with winter. Fitness goals are typically on everyone’s list of resolutions. They also prove to be the toughest to stick with. By the time fall rolls back around, many people can't recall the last time they exercised. Lucky for us San Clemente residents, there are some local options that are unique, and more likely to have you keep your word than a typical gym membership would. ORANGETHEORY You’d be hard-pressed to find someone who has never heard of Orangetheory. There are many locations nationwide, in part, because of the science behind it. Each class offers one hour of HIIT (High Interval Intensity Training) where members alternate between different cardio and strength exercises (running, weightlifting, etc.). This whole process is catered to the individual through heart-rate monitoring. Class members wear devices that record and display their heart rates in real time, allowing them to maintain a target heart rate that stimulates their metabolisms for hours post-workout. If you’ve heard of it, but have never taken a class, you might’ve been intimidated by the image of pedestaled trainers with microphones, leading a class full of bodies that look like those of professional athletes. “The number one thing I hear from people is that they’re scared...I was even scared [before] and I was active,” said Heidi Smith, who is Studio Manager at the San Clemente location.
THEORY
DESPITE ITS PERCEIVED INTENSITY, SHE ASSURES THAT THERE'S NOTHING TO BE INTIMIDATED BY, BECAUSE, “IT’S LIKE PERSONAL TRAINING IN A GROUP SETTING.” ORANGE THEORY'S SCIENTIFIC APPROACH MAKES IT BOTH INDIVIDUALIZED AND HIGHLY EFFECTIVE. THAT'S WHY IT HAS BEEN SO SUCCESSFUL: PEOPLE OF VARYING GENDERS, AGES (SC LOCATION HAS MEMBERS IN THEIR 70’S AND UP), AND BODY TYPES CAN FIND THEIR STRIDE, AND CHANGE THEIR LIVES. In their own way, Heidi exclaims: “everybody becomes an athlete!" First-timers get their first session for free, so get to San-Clemente.OrangeTheoryFitness.com and sign-up before your resolutions start to feel neglected.

So, a few years ago she founded Salt Fitness, where she's taking an approach to fitness that's less about vanity, and more about giving people the tools to function better. That's why she uses the TRX system, a fixed resistance band used for body-weight training. One can do pull-ups, push-ups, planks and more. The TRX allows her to create a full-body workout that caters to the goals of her clients, so that both an elderly person looking for the strength to lift things at home, and an athlete trying to build significant muscle mass, can get what they need from her sessions. In addition to the resistance bands, Emily does some free weight training, and advises her clients on what cardio or stretching they should do on their days outside the studio.
"FITNESS IS NOT ONE SIZE FITS ALL," SHE SAID, LAUGHING AND SHAKING HER HEAD A BIT. ALTHOUGH IT'S CLICHE, IT'S TRUE. "MOST PEOPLE JUST WANT TO FEEL COMFORTABLE IN THEIR OWN SKIN…THAT’S ALWAYS MY BIGGEST GOAL."

SKATE SKATE FIT
Thanks to John Clark and his boombox, in-line skating is trending in San Clemente. Last year, after John celebrated his 50th birthday, he decided it was time to pick up an old hobby. So, he bought some in-line skates and eventually got into the habit of skating a 10k everyday. He began inviting people to join him, and since popularity surged, Skate Fit was born. The group, which sees numbers as high as 40, meets Saturdays and Sundays at 7am, and Wednesdays at 6pm to skate six miles on the protected bike path along PCH. Six miles on skates isn't something to be intimidated by. In-line skating is the perfect workout for anyone looking to do low-impact cardio, and Skate Fit is particularly fitting for anyone looking to take in the ocean breeze and have a blast while they

Now, this hobby John re-introduced into his life last year, has officially become an organization to watch. They're including circuit exercises and stretches to do (off the skates). They even have multiple Skate Fit trainers, who were recently taught in-line skate coaching and given proper insurance coverage (similar to any personal trainer). John also partnered with COA to form COASkate, which will provide skates, gear and certified youth skate instructors. Whether you're an adult who hasn't been on a pair of skates in decades, or a kid looking to try something fresh; Skate Fit wants you to come along for the roll. Check out Skate.Fit to join the fun!

PUCKER URBAN FARM IS A LUSH BOUTIQUE FARM TUCKED INTO THE HILLS OF SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO. We grow certified organic lemons, with which we have created a beverage more fresh and resourceful than one can imagine. Our signature product is Mrs. Pucker’s Lemon Shot - a drink that uses the peel, pith, seeds and pulp from our locally grown lemons. They are picked fresh from the orchard and processed on-site, without sugar or preservatives, to ensure that there is nothing between you and the goodness of nature. Squeezing the juice from a lemon doesn’t encapsulate the nutritional richness, because in truth the majority of health benefits in lemons are found in the peel, pith and seeds. Consider the peel first. This gorgeous and aromatic outer layer contains 5-10 times more vitamins than the juice. Through the process by which we break down the entire lemon after it’s washed, we’re able to give you the power of nutrients like D-Limonene and Pectin. D-Limonene is an oil, found in the peel, that’s a known fat cleanser, detoxifier, and effective at dissolving gallstones and kidney stones. Pectin is an extremely important soluble fiber found in both the peel and pulp of lemons. It’s known to aid in proper digestion, lower cholesterol, and slow the absorption of carbohydrates and sugars. These two nutrients alone should act as fantastic nutritional aid for people with diabetes, excess weight, inflammation and digestive issues. That is the difference between traditional juice and our lemon shot: we don’t let any nutrient go un-consumed. Why? Because we believe that you aren’t just “what you eat”, but instead, you are what you eat, digest, assimilate, absorb and utilize. To take a holistic approach to your nutrition, contact us on puckerurbanfarm.com, where you can order your Mrs. Pucker’s Lemon Shot!(TM)

LEGAL COMPASS
ARTICLE JENNIFER MEDEIROS, ESTATE ATTORNEY
THE HEALTHY ESTATE AT THE TIME OF THIS WRITING, PRESIDENT TRUMP’S PROPOSED TAX PLAN IS STILL UNCERTAIN. Along with tax reform, the proposal calls for a complete elimination of the estate tax in 2023 and an increased estate tax exclusion amount beginning January 1, 2018, through 2023. There is also a proposal to eliminate the generation-skipping transfer tax. With so much uncertainty, people might decide to wait to see what changes will occur in the law before taking action. But if you take the “wait and see” approach your estate plan may not be effective to meet your goals when an accident or illness occurs. Regardless of what happens in the White House, having your wishes laid out in a valid trust is your best protection for your assets and your family. HERE ARE A FEW TIPS TO ENSURE THE HEALTH OF YOUR ESTATE PLAN IN 2018: + Is the person you named as agent on your financial power of attorney and health care power of attorney still the person who will best carry out your wishes when you are still living but unable to make decisions for yourself? + Is the person you named as trustee of your trust and executor of your will still the person you trust to wrap up your affairs when you pass away? + If your children are under the age of 18, have you named a guardian who will give them love and stability? + Is your schedule of trust assets current to reflect the real estate and bank and investment accounts you own right now? + Are the persons you want to receive your estate when you pass away properly listed as your beneficiaries? If you answered No to any of these questions or if you have other concerns about assets or family members, you should meet with your estate planning attorney. Keeping your estate plan healthy and current to reflect your wishes is just as important as your physical health. Adding updating your estate plan to your 2018 to do list will give you peace of mind. On the topic of physical health, I keep in shape by running. Did you know we have a free run club in San Clemente? Talega Run Club meets every Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. at Peet’s Coffee for a 3-4 mile run. We also meet every Thursday night at the Outlets at the 2XU store at 6 p.m. for a 5-mile route on our beautiful beach trail to the pier and back. Join us anytime! Whether you call me for an estate plan update or you join me at Run Club, I wish you all my best for a Healthy 2018! 32

fill in the blank with what you want to create).
I would like to share my recipe for manifestation. First off, I believe this works because I am living proof of using this magic formula in my own life and second, when we can create on a quantum level, we are literally moving molecules. Shaping energy. We live in a HOLOGRAM! We are powerful creators beyond our knowing. If we can simply approach our lives believing that IT IS POSSIBLE, we are already half way there. Harnessing the energy that exists in the quantum field is the quantum mechanics that proves our thoughts really do create our reality.
4. Handwrite the vision in the first person, in the present tense as if it’s already happening. 5. Begin each sentence with “I AM” – when you embody the “I AM” you are communicating with the universe and activating the law of attraction. 6. Use words that are expansive, rather than contracting. Use language that speaks to what you DO want, rather than what you DO NOT want. EXPANSIVE EXAMPLE: I am so happy and grateful now that I am at my ideal weight. CONTRACTING EXAMPLE: I am so happy and grateful that I am not gaining weight. 7. Work your joy and gratitude into each sentence. How are you going

earth to assist you in your endeavor. So here goes: SET YOURSELF UP FOR SUCCESS + It’s got to be 50% believable within the context of your life. + It’s got to be a progression that makes sense in your life. (For example, if your vision is to build an entire city, you would need to first start with a single building) + You must take action in the direction of this vision. (We can’t just Dream It Up and then sit on the couch….) + On the top or the bottom of your Vision Statement write the words “This or Something Better for the Highest Good of All Concerned” If you take the time to create a Vision Statement, I would be happy to review it during a complimentary strategy session. Feel free to email me.
