Publisher's Letter JULY 2017

“A

dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself.” ‒ Josh Billings

Any dog owner can tell you how much more they give in the way of Love and Affection; then it takes to care for one. July and dogs go hand in hand, and we love our furry friends as much as our most cherished loved ones. In fact, they are a major part of the family. That's why we've included an article this month on PetFriendly places around town to enjoy something to eat, or just a hot cup of Joe with our precious pet's in tow. We also want to thank everyone who either helps clean up the beach or brings awareness to whats happening around us in the way of beach conservation. In particular, the plans to bury San Onofre’s nuclear waste just a few hundred feet from the beach. The nonprofit group Citizens Oversight filed suit to stop it. The California Coastal Commission has rescheduled its next briefing over the 2015 permit that allows Southern California Edison to bury millions of pounds of nuclear waste next to one of the most iconic surf breaks in the world: San O'. The August meeting will be held at Pepperdine University in Malibu. Residents who cannot attend the meeting are invited to email the commission at SanOnofreComments@coastal.ca.gov.

Director of the Beach Conservation Program, as he reflects on

the youngest beach clean-up volunteers. Miller says the two and three-year-olds show up a bit confused their first time out, picking up rocks and throwing them away. By the second or third time they come to help, they’re running around excitedly on the beach, picking up trash and showing it to the adults. Watching the children catch on to the cause is one of Miller’s favorite parts of running the program. The Beach Conservation Program, with its flagship chapter in San Clemente, was established just less than a year ago, in August 2016. Miller started with a simple vision to mobilize the surf community to do a few beach clean-ups per year and set a positive example. Others caught the vision as well, and the program grew rapidly. Currently, Miller says there are about 400 volunteers involved in the San Clemente chapter, and the program has evolved into an international

our years ago, Mike and Lisa Dove were on a mission to help their daughter. The teenager had been struggling with skin issues throughout high school and was encouraged to try out a gluten free diet. As she prepared to leave for college, she realized it would be too expensive to enjoy sweet treats that were also gluten free. Mike and Lisa decided to create something of their own, and the idea to make gluten free cookie dough was born.

The Doves didn’t realize how challenging the

once they got going, they wondered if they could make the dough without eggs and butter. Refining the recipe took a lot of work and time, and Mike admits they grew tired at times, but they kept at it. As they developed the recipes, people

beachy vibe of San Clemente would be the perfect environment to do so. Three years ago, after a long journey proving to the health department the cookie dough did not need to be refrigerated, the Doves got authorization to use their labels, which allowed them to officially become San Clemente Cookie Dough Co. Since that time, they have continued to tweak their recipes. Mike says they realized the cookie dough was already so healthy; they may as well go organic. The Doves have spent a lot of time researching ingredients and use the best they can find. Since becoming official, they have also built their own commercial kitchen and started to distribute their cookie dough to different markets. Mike says he and Lisa would eventually like to open up a cookie scoop shop in San Clemente. For now, you can buy their delicious, organic cookie dough at Hanson’s Market or online at SanClementeCookieDough.com. Currently, flavors you can choose from are "Riviera's Chocolate Chip" and "Churches Brownie."
