There’s something about July that invites us to wander a little further, linger a little longer, and say “yes” to something new. Whether it’s discovering a hidden corner of your neighborhood, trying a new fitness routine, or finally visiting that restaurant you’ve driven past a dozen times, summer is the perfect season to explore.

Exploration doesn’t always require a plane ticket or a packed itinerary. Sometimes it’s as simple as a morning walk along a different park path or stretch of beach, experimenting with homemade popsicle recipes in your kitchen, or stepping into a new space that challenges your routine in the best way. This month, we celebrate the spirit of curiosity and the joy of discovering what’s right in front of us.
Inside these pages, you’ll meet Jay Minor of Assisted Living Locators, offering guidance and compassion in navigating important life transitions. For those with travel on the mind, Mark McCready of Cruise Planners shares inspiration for an unforgettable Alaskan adventure this August. Closer to home, Kelly Leonardi of Blue Moon Pilates invites you to explore strength and balance in a fresh way, while Dr. Deanna Tang of Huntington Learning Center of Laguna Niguel helps families prepare for the learning season ahead with confidence. And if a quick getaway is calling, we highlight the Gaylord Pacific Resort & Convention Center in San Diego—an ideal destination just down the coast.
Wherever this summer takes you, I hope you find something new to love.
Happy adventuring,

Exploring senior living options often begins with quiet concern: late-night research, difficult conversations, and a desire to find the right path for someone you love. It’s a journey that can feel uncertain, emotional, and overwhelming, especially when families are unsure of where to begin or who to trust.
In South Orange County, Jay Minor of Assisted Living Locators helps families navigate that journey with clarity and confidence. As a trusted guide, he brings a deeply personal approach that transforms exploration into something thoughtful, supported, and far less intimidating for everyone involved.
Many are surprised to learn is that this level of personalized guidance and advocacy is offered at no cost to them, creating space for thoughtful decision making without additional financial pressure.
As owner and senior living advisor of Assisted Living Locators – South Orange County, Jay draws on decades of experience walking alongside people during pivotal life moments. “Before entering senior care, I spent about 25 years in pastoral ministry,” Jay shares. “That season taught me how to sit with people in some of their most vulnerable and uncertain moments, and how to listen before I ever offer an answer.”
While he holds multiple professional credentials, he’s clear about what matters most in his work today. “Honestly, the credential that shapes me most in this work is the pastoral heart I carried into it,” he says. “Every family I meet is in a unique chapter of their story, and I consider it a privilege to walk alongside them.”
That approach becomes especially important at the beginning of the process. “I slow everything down,” Jay explains. “Most families come to me after weeks, sometimes months, of quietly worrying, and the first thing I do is listen.”
He also helps families avoid a common and frustrating pitfall. “When someone fills out a form on a general senior living website, that personal information is often sold to multiple communities simultaneously,” Jay says. “Within minutes, a family can find themselves fielding 10 or 15 phone calls. That’s an overwhelming and disorienting experience at an already difficult time.”

Instead, Jay acts as both a buffer and an advocate. “I gather information once, privately, and I reach out to communities on the family's behalf, only to the ones that are a genuine fit.” His no-cost service allows families to focus on thoughtful, informed decisions rather than reacting under pressure.
Jay encourages families to start earlier than they might expect. “The best time to explore senior living options is before there’s an emergency,” he says. “When families begin the conversation early, they have the gift of time.”
He also emphasizes being intentional about how the search begins. “I always encourage families to connect with a trusted local advisor first,” Jay notes. “You share your information once, privately, and someone who knows the local landscape handles the outreach on your behalf.”
And when it comes to exploring options, Jay believes there’s no substitute for experience. “Don’t judge a community by its brochure, or its sales pitch,” he says. Through his Senior Living Discovery Tours, families step into the day-to-day rhythm of a community rather than simply touring it. They might share a meal, join an activity, and observe how residents interact and gain a genuine sense of the environment, energy, and lifestyle.
“The difference between reading about a place and experiencing it firsthand is remarkable,” Jay explains. That first-hand
exposure often reveals what brochures cannot: whether a space feels welcoming, whether residents seem engaged, and whether it truly feels like a place someone could call home.
Finding the right fit goes well beyond care needs or amenities.
“I spend a lot of time asking questions that might not seem medical at all,” Jay says. “What did you love doing before things got hard? Do you prefer a quiet evening or a lively dinner table?”
Those answers shape outcomes that feel right in everyday life. “A community can check every clinical box and still be a poor fit if the social environment doesn’t match who that person is,” he explains. “I keep that person at the center of every conversation.”
For families throughout South Orange County, that guidance brings clarity and confidence during an otherwise overwhelming time. “I want families to know that you don’t have to figure this out alone,” Jay says. “There’s a better way; one advisor, one conversation, and a process that puts your family’s needs first rather than a sales funnel.”
Whether planning ahead or facing an immediate need, Jay offers a more human way to move forward. “If you’re curious about what’s out there, I’d love to invite you to one of my Senior Living Discovery Tours,” he says. “A relaxed, experience-first way to explore your options without the pressure.”

An inviting path to strength, healing, and deeper mind–body connection at Blue Moon Pilates

For Kelly Leonardi, movement has always been about more than performance. Before founding Blue Moon Pilates in 2002, the Orange County studio owner spent 15 years as a professional ballet dancer, performing nationally and internationally.
Those years spent onstage shaped the way she approaches movement, instruction, and connection.
“Dance shaped so much of who I am: teaching me discipline, artistry, adaptability, collaboration, and the deep connection between physical movement and emotional well-being,” Kelly says.
Pilates entered her life as a tool for conditioning and recovery during her dance career and eventually evolved into something deeper. “Pilates became an essential part of my life,” she recalls. “Over time, I realized Pilates was about far more than exercise. It became a way to help people reconnect with themselves and move through life with greater confidence, understanding, and ease.”
Today, Blue Moon Pilates has grown into one of the nation’s largest Balanced Body training centers and Orange County’s only authorized training center through Balanced Body, Inc.

Despite its growth, the studio has maintained a deeply personal approach, made evident in its mission: Clients • Community • Each Other.
“At the heart of Blue Moon Pilates is the community and team,” she says. “I wanted to build a place where people feel connected through movement, education, and shared growth.”
The studio is defined by its spirit of inclusivity. Kelly believes “Pilates is for every body,” welcoming everyone from professional athletes and dancers to seniors, prenatal mothers, rehabilitation clients, and cancer survivors. Smaller class sizes and individualized instruction allow clients to feel supported physically as well as emotionally.
Kelly’s experiences with motherhood, entrepreneurship, breast cancer, surgeries, and recovery have profoundly influenced her guidance. She sees Pilates
as an invitation. “Pilates has remained a grounding force that continually helped me reconnect to myself through every phase of life with greater awareness, compassion, balance, and strength.”
Kelly is also passionate about mentorship, education, and growing the Pilates community, with the studio training more than 100 new teachers each year. Helping instructors build confidence and meaningful careers has become one of the most fulfilling parts of her journey.
For those seeking an intentional path to wellness, Kelly believes Pilates offers something uniquely transformative.
“People often begin Pilates hoping to improve strength or flexibility,” says Kelly. “But what they frequently discover is that it also helps reduce stress, improve concentration, support healing, and create a stronger relationship with their body and overall well-being.”

There are journeys that simply fill a passport, and there are journeys that change the way we see the world.
A voyage through Alaska, especially in August, is the kind of experience that stays with you long after you return home. Towering glaciers drift beside the ship, whales rise from the water without warning, and majestic wildlife move freely across dreamlike landscapes.
For luxury travel advisor Mark McCready, helping travelers experience Alaska at its most awe-inspiring has become a passion. Through Cruise Planners, Mark offers curated journeys designed not simply as vacations, but as transformative explorations tailored to each discerning traveler’s style.
His own foray into the travel industry was shaped by reinvention. After working for an e-commerce business for 20 years, Mark was diagnosed with cancer. Following his recovery, he wanted a change.
“My wife and I have always been big travelers, so that seemed like a good place to start. I had always used a travel agent. Mine was a Cruise Planner franchise owner and she convinced me that I would be great at this because I could bring my knowledge of travel to the business.”
Now, five years in, that personal turning point continues to guide the way Mark approaches every itinerary he creates.
ARTICLE BY HEATHER WHITSITT
PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARK MCCREADY
“My goal is to help people find and plan the right vacation,” says Mark. “Sometimes that is booking everything, and sometimes it is booking one thing. Advice is always free.”
This level of customized service has earned Mark a devoted following among travelers.
“It is the process, the knowledge, and the availability,” he explains. “It is about asking the right questions at the beginning of the planning process so we can narrow down all the possibilities and find the right fit. It is about knowing the area where they are going. Then it’s about being there for questions and other issues that might arise. I like being hands on, and don’t push people off to assistants after they have booked. I’m the owner, and available 24/7. I work virtually, so my doors don’t close for the night or weekend.”
Nowhere is that firsthand insight more valuable than in Alaska during August, the peak season for wildlife encounters and glacier viewing.

“Many people think Alaska is a onetime trip. What you may not realize is that there is so much to Alaska that you don’t see from the cruise ports. It is vast beyond comprehension. Because of the always changing weather, your subsequent visits to Alaska will not look like your first. I have clients that now make yearly trips there.”
In late summer, Alaska is nothing short of spectacular. Voyagers may spot humpback whales feeding in icy waters, bald eagles soaring above pine-covered cliffs, or, if they’re lucky, one of the legendary “big five” moving across the vast expanse.
“Bears, caribou, wolves, moose and Dall sheep are considered ‘the big five’ for wildlife viewing in Alaska and are on everyone’s list,” Mark says.

“The summer months may be the best time to view the wildlife, but there are treasures waiting for you in the off season as well, such as the northern lights.”
As more clients seek meaningful, experience-driven vacations, Mark’s business has continued to flourish, surpassing $1 million in travel sales last year alone. But it has never been just about numbers, it’s about journeys that spark wonder, create lasting memories, and give guests a first-row seat to the world around them.
This August, Alaska calls with untamed beauty and unparalleled adventure. For travelers ready to answer, Mark offers not just expertise, but a trusted guide through the extraordinary.

Use summer’s breathing room to bridge learning gaps, build confidence, and spark lasting academic growth

With summer in full swing, the door is open to slower schedules, more flexibility, and time to refocus.
Yet, according to Dr. Deanna Tang, Executive Director of Huntington Learning Center in Laguna Niguel, the season also offers something meaningful—the opportunity to unlock a child’s potential before school is back in session.
“Summer is one of the most valuable opportunities for students to either catch up, stay on track, or get ahead academically,” she explains. “During
the school year, students are often balancing homework, sports, activities, and busy schedules. Summer creates the space to slow down, strengthen foundational skills, and build confidence without the pressure of day-to-day school demands.”
That enduring commitment to student growth lies at the heart of the center’s work, and Deanna’s own story. Before opening the center, Deanna worked as a pharmacist, a role she valued for its service to others, until motherhood reshaped her perspective.

“Having children changed my priorities and the way I viewed time,” she shares. “As a pharmacist, I loved connecting with my patients and helping them better understand and manage their health, but over time, I realized I was missing too many milestones at home while also feeling unfulfilled professionally. After five years without meaningful growth in my role, I knew I wanted to create something more aligned with my values.”
That realization led her to a life-changing professional pivot. “I did not want to become a business owner simply to own a business,” Deanna says. “I wanted to make a meaningful impact in the community. When I came across Huntington Learning Center, it felt like a serendipitous opportunity to combine education, mentorship, and service in a way that truly changes lives.”
Today, the center is an educational resource for families seeking an alternative to traditional tutoring, offering student-centered instruction designed to build confidence alongside academic growth.
“We begin with a comprehensive academic evaluation that helps identify foundational learning gaps and the specific skills a student needs to strengthen,” she explains. “From there, we create a personalized learning plan tailored to each student’s goals, pace, and learning style.”
Summer months are often when academic gaps become more noticeable. Deanna notes that the “summer slide is very real,” particularly in reading and math, making consistent

academic engagement essential before students return to the classroom. “Summer is also an ideal time for students to prepare for important exams like the SAT or ACT,” Deanna says. “Without the stress of regular school responsibilities, students are able to focus more intentionally and make meaningful progress before testing season begins.”
Beyond academics, the center empowers students to feel more motivated, capable, and self-reliant. “Our goal is not just short-term improvement, but helping students build lasting confidence and independence,” Deanna explains.
The center’s supportive, engaging environment is one of the things families value most. Families are active partners in the learning journey, with consistent communication and collaboration supporting students both in and out of the classroom.
“At Huntington Learning Center, we believe every child is capable of growth when they are given the right support, encouragement, and individualized attention,” Deanna says.
“Our goal is to create a warm and welcoming environment where students feel safe asking questions, making mistakes, and building confidence in themselves.”
As the summer season unfolds, Deanna encourages families to explore the possibilities of what their child can achieve with the right support and consistency during the summer months.
“Even a small investment in learning over the summer can make a significant difference in how prepared, confident, and motivated a student feels walking into the new school year.”

Winnipeg in the winter, and a 17-year-old waits 45 minutes in the cold for Keanu Reeves. Her fingers are numb. She is not there for an autograph. She is there to ask him to appear in her audition tape for MuchMusic, Canada’s MTV. When he finally agrees, she writes her number on a gum wrapper with a borrowed lip liner.
He calls days later.
That 17-year-old was Jen Cohen — fitness expert, host of the Habits & Hustle podcast, and best-selling author. She has built a career on the premise her frostbitten afternoon proved. She calls the practice the 10% Target: 10 attempts at whatever you want most in life.
The premise is simple. Most people never make one attempt. Almost nobody makes two. The math works in favor of the person who keeps going.
The top-rated Habits & Hustle podcast has logged hundreds of conversations with high performers and the people who study what the body does to the mind. Her TEDx talk, The Secret to Getting Anything You Want in Life, has traveled widely inside Fortune 500 sales-training rooms. On the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Cohen sits down to share the working rules that are the foundation of her latest book, Bigger, Better, Bolder.
“You have to be the CEO of your own life.”

The door opens, or another door does. The unmade attempt and the refused one leave you in the same place — except one of them teaches you something.
Cohen frames her habits as a wager: How do I stack the deck so I win more than I lose? The workout happens first, and the food decisions follow. The email follow-up gets sent, and the answer arrives. The choices compound in a single direction.
3
No one is born with it. The people who look disciplined are running a routine they have rehearsed long enough that it no longer feels like effort. The reps are the skill. Miss them, and the skill fades, the same as any other.
4
Confidence does not arrive by repeating the word. It arrives after the body has done the thing — the workout finished, the cold walk endured, the email sent. The mind takes its cues from what the body proves it can do. Talk follows action, not the other way around.
5
The first decision sets the slope of the rest. Skip the Monday workout, and the rest of the week tends to follow. Hold the line on Monday, and the slope tilts the other way.
