Searching for an assisted living community can be challenging. After all, you want to make sure you find the best place for your loved one, and it needs to be clean, well run, and within your price range. You need to get a good sense of what the community is really like, not just what its advertising says about it. The process doesn’t have to be intimidating or overwhelming. Do research online and by phone. Tour to see what each community feels like in person. For the communities you like best, follow up for more in-depth information. Use this checklist to compare communities that you’ve toured. Note your observations.

Assisted Living Community Follow-up Checklist Documents to request:

 Copy of the Resident Bill of Rights  Copy of the most recent survey results from state regulatory inspectors  Menu of meals and snacks

 What specific care is available from doctors, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and others?

Follow-up conversations: Cost

 How much will assisted living care cost for your loved one?

 Is the facility affiliated with a hospital or nursing home if more care is needed?

 Does the cost include any special move-in fees or fees for services, such as laundry?

 What medical emergency procedures are in place?

 Is there an extra charge for transportation to doctor’s appointments or outings?

Other questions

 Calendar of activities, events and outings

 Under what circumstances might costs go up?

 Are residents required to have renter’s insurance for their units?

 How is the community funded, and is the funding stable?

 Is housekeeping for units provided, and included in the price?

 Will the community help with the paperwork involved with getting Medicare, Medicaid, VA, and other sources to pay for care?

 Are barber and beauty services provided, and included in the price?

Follow-up conversations: Staff  What’s the ratio of staff to residents?  What’s the staff turnover rate?  Are background checks performed before hiring staff? If so, when and how?  How much training do staff members have?  What does the facility do to avoid staff burnout and/ or retain great staff members?  Is there an RN, LVN, or CNA on staff?

 Are pets allowed?  Are there religious services on the property or nearby?  Are visits to the residents allowed at any time, or are there set visiting hours?  Are residents allowed to have overnight guests, such as a family member from out of town?  How does the community accommodate private time for couples if only one spouse is living in the community?  What is the facility’s emergency preparedness strategy?

SACRAMENTO AUTHOR LAUNCHES NEW BOOK Recently local author Jessica Kriegel, Ed.D. held a launch party

CROCKER ACQUIRES NEW CHANDELIER In March, the Crocker Art Museum announced it had acquired artist Dale Chihuly’s “Golden Teal Chandelier” as part of its permanent collection. The 8-foot long, 6-foot wide chandelier will hang in the front entrance of the Teel Family Pavilion, which opened in 2010. The subtle blue-green, blue-gray and gold tones of the chandelier suit the contemporary look of the Pavilion, and also allude to Sacramento's rivers and the gold found therein. The new chandelier is a prelude to the Crocker's upcoming summer glass exhibitions -- “Little Dreams in Glass and Metal: Enameling in America, 1920 to the Present,” opening June 19; “Glass for the New Millennium: Masterworks from the Kaplan-Ostergaard Collection” (featuring work

Sweet Dreams Dental Device Can Help Those Suffering from Sleep Apnea SLEEP APNEA SOLUTION

ARTICLE CORRIE PELC | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Having trouble sleeping lately? You might be suffering from sleep apnea — a disorder where a person's breathing is interrupted repeatedly during sleep. An estimated 30 million Americans suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, according to the Stanford Center for Sleep Sciences and Medicine. The good news is that there's help! Marconi Dental Group in Sacramento offers a free screening for a dental appliance covered by most PPO insurance plans that can help correct breathing when sleeping, giving you the ZZZs you need. They also offer financing available for the non-insured.

One of the most common treatments for sleep apnea is called Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), which uses a machine that forces air through the nasal passages while you sleep. However, many people find this treatment uncomfortable and may stop using it, which can be dangerous to their health. Dr. Alizadeh offers a different solution in the form of a dental device that moves the lower jaw forward, helping to prevent the sleeper's tongue from falling backward and blocking the airway. After a free screening to make sure the dental device will work for the patient, each sleep apnea device is custom-made and Dr. Alizadeh says most PPO plans that they work with cover the cost of the therapy, with no out-of-pocket expenses for the patient. Dr. Alizadeh says he has had several patients that have struggled with sleep apnea and using CPAP for many years, and since switching to the dental device have nothing by positive things to say about it. "They feel refreshed when they wake up in the morning and they did it without a loud machine right next to their beds," he says. "We have many satisfied patients and that is what makes this all very rewarding for us to offer as a extra service for our patients." For more information about the sleep apnea

device and to schedule a free screening appointment, call 916.589.6476 or visit MarconiDentalGroup.com.

WHAT IS SLEEP APNEA?

According to Dr. Ashkan Alizadeh — who owns Marconi Dental Group with his wife Dr. Maryam Saleh — obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the tongue and soft palate collapse onto the back of the throat, stopping airflow. Each of these pauses, called an apnea, can last a few seconds or a few minutes and can occur many times per hour. As a consequence of this, suffers of sleep apnea get less of the restful, deep sleep that a body requires and are often chronically tired during the day. 16

Sacramento Lifestyle | May 2016

Symptoms of sleep apnea include: • Loud and chronic snoring • Choking, snoring, or gasping during sleep • Long pauses in breathing • Daytime fatigue

Realizing the Dream: Creating a Custom Home in El Dorado Hills ARTICLE LAURA I. WINN PHOTOGRAPHY STEVEN HELLON 20

A

step through the double-windowed doors of the Miller home in El Dorado Hill's Serrano community is a step into luxury. Antique wall panels from the 1900s function as art in the foyer. Reproductions of hanging factory lights illuminate the dining table. In the master bedroom, farmhouse windows turned wall mirrors reflect the backyard. From the temperature-controlled wine room to the full bar on the other side with its own dishwasher, every detail of the 3,800 square foot home is the dream design of owners Steve and Tami Miller, brought to life from the ground up by ESI Builders and Remodelers. FUNCTION & LUXURY

Steve, a luxury real estate agent with Sotheby's International, had a specific decor aesthetic and floor plan in mind for his custom home. “I wanted to push the envelope of what was possible within this community, he explains.

“Serrano is known for Mediterranean style homes, but my vision was more contemporary, a revision of old: weathered white planks, stone, metal and glass.” Working closely with ESI's president and CEO Dave Sipes, the Millers created their one-of-a-kind, four bedroom, threeand-half bath home with energy efficient features including Photovoltaic solar, spray foam insulation and a whole house fan. The overall design boasts both functional flow and the finer things in life. Set in hues of gray, black and white, the great room connects to the bar on one side, the industrial style kitchen a second and opens to the patio and pool on the third, making the layout ideal for entertaining. Down the hall, bedrooms for two teenage daughters feature private baths, walk-in closets and a view of the backyard fire pit. Steve and Tami's own spacious master bathroom and dressing room are accented by chandeliers sparkling with hundreds of crystals. “I wanted the space to feel like a jewelry box for Tami,” said her husband of over 25 years.

Sliding glass doors and floor-to-ceiling windows incorporate the outside within the decor. The geometric wallpaper in the hall bathroom is custom designed. Bathroom drawers have drop-in outlets for blow dryers and curling irons. “I didn't want anything to seem like an afterthought,” the anti-clutter Miller stresses. PLAN & EXECUTION

To ensure no detail became an afterthought in the planning or execution, the Millers relied on ESI's full-scale operation, which begins with the selection of a build site and continues even after the home is completed through ongoing customer support and warranty services. From the early stages, Steve could conjure images for the home in his mind. Tami looked to magazines and books for inspiration. Designer Miles Ostermann's 3D renderings of their combined ideas helped finalize the plans. With the design set, ESI handled the complicated process of nailing down permits, contracts, budgets and timelines. Throughout construction, Miller says they benefited from working with a smaller company, noting communication was clear and frequent with weekly touch-base meetings to go over progress and budget. Today, ESI goes beyond the weekly meetings with cloud-based technology. Clients can simply log on and view construction.

REALIZING THE DREAM: (CON TI N U ED)

These anytime updates allow the home owners to take vacations — a popular choice during remodels, additions or energy-efficient upgrades — and still check in from their phones and laptops. At every stage, the company provides real-time pricing data and ensures clients approve everything before it's installed. “At ESI, we have the mindset that the journey is just as important as the end result for the customer,” Sipes says. “We are focused on listening to what the customer has to say and working to achieve that goal rather than finding alternative ways to do things.” Miller agrees. “ESI wants it to be a true custom experience and reflect the person, not the builder itself,” he says. “They exceeded my expectations. I would feel comfortable recommending ESI to Sotheby's because like Sotheby's, ESI is committed to exceptional value.” This drive to deliver personalized communication and data helps the company head off delays and budget overruns, Sipes says. moved in, the process was just shy of two years. That was reasonably close to the initial estimate, Miller says. Of course every custom build is different, but ESI's average timeline is from one to two-and-a-half years. TIPS & ADVICE

For anyone considering a custom home, Miller and Sipes share the same advice: Partner with a builder as soon possible. A good builder helps the client find the ideal property, allowing the vision to fully materialize within the confines of the area's building restrictions and regulations. In other words, “Don't manipulate your dream to fit the lot,” Miller says. And while dreaming big, keep your feet on the ground you've chosen. “I think too many people have unrealistic expectations when it comes to timelines,” Miller warns. Some delays are almost inevitable in a big construction job, but a company with a contingency plan can limit delays and the resulting headaches. Contingency plans ensure that should anything happen to the project foreman, another leader within the company is

able to take over and fill those big shoes with the same quality of service. Communication is key to any working relationship, and especially one with so many moving parts. Choose a builder with a commitment to clear communication and the guarantee of a point-person overseeing the entire project. “Dave was personally on the job site nearly every day,” Miller explains. It doesn't take a village to build a custom home or remodel but it does take a huge team. Pick a company like ESI that employs a rigorous vetting process for hiring all the consultants and subcontract workers involved. Ask questions, check references, and make sure you feel completely comfortable entrusting the company with the blueprints to your future home like the Millers did with ESI. The Millers will recommend ESI to family and friends to complete your remodel and or new home build. “If you have the money, it can be the most satisfying journey to build your own home,” Miller says. “The end result for us is better than we could have imagined it to be. We say we love our home all the time.” May 2016 | Sacramento Lifestyle

Local Business Determined to Help Educate Teen Drivers "#1 Cause of accidents is distraction" says Nielsen

ARTICLE ALLISON HOPKINS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

B

ob Nielsen is the president and owner of R.C. Nielsen Insurance Services in Fair Oaks and has been a Farmers Insurance agent for 30 years. He’s also a husband, a father, and a friend to many people in the community. He is very committed to keeping a healthy balance between his personal life and business. With more than 10,000 policies in force, Nielsen’s team of 12 employees is busy providing clients with the best possible protection at a competitive cost, whether it’s for auto, homeowners, business/commercial, workers’ compensation or life insurance. “I treat it [the company] like a sports team,” says Nielsen, a member of the highly-respected, international Million Dollar Round Table association. “My motto is to keep it fun and keep it fair. We are competitive, we like to win, and a lot of that winning is how we act in our community and what we give back.” Over the years, Nielsen has been very active in the community and continually supports Loaves and Fishes, Red Cross and March of Dimes. He has three children, 24

Sacramento Lifestyle | May 2016

ages 20, 24 and 28, and has made it a point to be very involved in supporting youth programs, including coaching soccer teams for many years. Having worked in the industry this long, Nielsen has unfortunately seen many teenagers suffer from car accidents, including one who became paralyzed and others who lost their lives. He has a strong passion for helping new drivers understand the risks of being behind the wheel and wants to do whatever he can to help educate them. “The number one cause of accidents is distraction,” says Nielsen. “It used to be the tape player and now it’s the iPod or the iPhone.” As a piggyback to Farmers’ You’re Essential to Safety (Y.E.S.) driver education program, Nielsen offers teenagers a chance to earn $200 if they don’t have any tickets or at-fault accidents in a threeyear period. He gives them his cell phone number for any situation where they are in need of a ride and provides the new driver with an accident kit that includes a whistle and a camera. When they leave Nielsen’s office, the teenager has successfully completed the Y.E.S. program — they’ve watched a powerful movie where teens share the devastating results of bad decisions, discussed the laws

relating to curfews and driving with friends, taken an online quiz and signed an agreement with him. "My passion for helping teen drivers and their families stems from a personal experience in which a friend's son was killed due to reckless driving,” says Nielsen. “What it put the family through was devastating. At the time, the helpless feeling I had in not being able to do enough for the family motivated me to enhance our Y.E.S. program. I feel that today more than ever, teens are needing extra incentives and motivation to stay safe on our dangerous roads. It is important for them to understand the depth of the choices they make when getting behind the wheel."

Emigh Hardware — A Sacramento Legacy for Over 100 Years ARTICLE MICHELE GIACOMINI | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

hen brothers James and Clay Emigh arrived in Sacramento in 1908 and set up shop on J Street, they did more than create a storefront — they created a legacy that would still stand strong 108 years later. Moving to Sacramento from Suisun City, the Emigh brothers began to sell hardware through their store, Emigh Hardware. The brothers took every opportunity they could to grow the business and in the 1930s retired the business into the hands of James’ three sons — Albert, James Jr. and Colby — who made the decision to relocate the business where the Sacramento Convention Center now sits. By the early 1950s, another move would take place — to “the country” at the newly-developed Country Club Center at El Camino and Watt Avenue, across the street from where the establishment now stands today. Back then, their only neighbor was a goat farm. 26

Sacramento Lifestyle | May 2016

While the move to the Country Club Center location proved to be a great success, one issue did arise. Many people had no clue how to pronounce “Emigh.” So in the 1960s the company introduced a cartoon character depicting a pigtailed girl in overalls saying "Call Me Amy." Little Amy is a composite drawing of Colby and Jesma Emigh's daughters, Carol and Mary, and is still a familiar feature in Emigh Hardware advertisements today. Since that time, Emigh Hardware has grown its earnest reputation for selling quality products, employing down-toearth people and keeping it’s “old-fashion” feel. People get that feeling, because as Rich Lawrence, the president of Emigh Hardware, contributes, “Our store is staffed with over 75 knowledgeable employees, some of whom have been with the company for more than 20 years.”

Shoppers travel from miles away and pass numerous chain hardware stores along their drive. Lawrence attributes this strong sense of loyalty is because “our customers are treated to extras they just can’t get elsewhere.” He further explains at Emigh Hardware “they provide service that starts with a smile and doesn’t end until you find what you want and know how to use it.” For Emigh Hardware, the community comes first, from excellent customer service inside the store to helping area youths at the Aldar Academy and the River Oak Center. Some of Emigh’s community commitments also include hosting blood drives with Blood Source, installing rooftop solar panels as a commitment to environmental stewardship, fundraising for Children’s Miracle Network, and helping with Habitat for Humanity. Over the past 100+ years, the location may have changed, but the attitude has never wavered. Emigh Hardware has grown its respect amongst the community and a strong, ever-growing, loyal customer base. In this day and age of high tech, with computers answering phones and taking on-line orders, stepping into Emigh’s is a refreshing step into the past — a time when people put people first. That’s because Emigh’s is "Where service has been a tradition since 1908."

uring summer visits to the California Sierras as a rock climbing and mountaineering instructor, east coast native Jeanie Shaw says she simply fell in love. When a church opened up in Sacramento, she interviewed, admittedly, because it was close to the mountain ranges she grew to adore. That was in 1983. Since then, Rev. Shaw has served a number of churches in the region as an ordained Presbyterian minister, and now leads the Eventide Community, which meets every Sunday evening at 5 p.m. at the Arden Christian Center. “There’s not a pew in sight. There’s no organ. There’s no sort of upfront. We all participate,” says Rev. Shaw of Eventide’s approach to faith. “It’s open to everybody, particularly people that are searching for an authentic way they can make a difference in their lives and in the world.” In the world and in the nation, Rev. Shaw dedicates much of her time to help those periled by natural disasters. If a neighborhood is destroyed Rev. Jeanie Shaw and the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Group spent a week helping to rebuild homes in The Rockaways in New York after Hurricane Sandy. Photo courtesy Rev. Jeanie Shaw.

by hurricanes, tornadoes, or floods, Rev. Shaw and a team of volunteers will show up to provide help by means of a hammer, fresh coat of paint, or by leading prayer. From the Rockaways of New York battered by Hurricane Sandy, to Joplin, Missouri’s devastation with tornadoes, Rev. Shaw logs hundreds of miles throughout the United States with plans to visit South Carolina in May. Still, Rev. Shaw does not forget the state she grew to love. In 1989 she came up with the grand idea to plant 1 million trees by the year 2000 as a gift to the future of Sacramento. In 2001, in partnership with the Sacramento Tree Foundation and SMUD, the 1 millionth tree was planted by Rev. Shaw in Cesar Chavez Park. “Our goal now is 5 million trees,” says Rev. Shaw. “It’s an amazing goal, but one that I think defines us as Sacramentans because we are a community of trees.” Eventide is also working with the Parkview Presbyterian Church on the corner of 9th and T Streets to build a multicultural house where young people can live and serve in multicultural projects, scheduled to open this summer. In February, Rev. Shaw visited Nicaragua for a week to help with water issues and painting classrooms. She also plans to return next year to work in partnership with the Council of Protestant Churches of Nicaragua to help build community latrines. It’s not pretty work, she says, but its work that feeds the soul. “I could go on with stories, and stories, and stories. We don’t know when we go, the stories we’ll hear. But every single time, it is a story where each of us has made a profound difference. Not just building a house, but sharing our hearts. That’s what we take away the most,” says Rev. Shaw.

Parting Thoughts

I Want to Ride

MY BICYCLE... WORDS CORRIE PELC | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

T

hinking back to the time I spent growing up in the (then) cowtown known as Washingtonville in Upstate New York, my fondest memories all revolve around my bike. It's not that it was expensive or especially good looking — although it was a very pretty blue color with a rainbow-emblazoned banana seat. It's just that everything I did every day of every summer was centered around my bike. Wanted to go to your friend's house? You rode your bike. Bored and needed something to do? We all hopped on our bikes and had races around the cul-de-sac or, as we got older, went for longer bike rides through our housing development. The worst punishment my parents could ever bestow upon me was taking my bicycle away as it left me completely cut off from the two-wheeled world my friends were living in. After moving away from Washingtonville and getting older, I suddenly found myself no longer wanting my bike. In fact, it wasn't until about two years ago — at the age of 37 — that I decided to buy a bike for myself. While it had been many years and I was certainly not as steady on it as I once had been, I found it still held the same magic for me it did throughout my childhood. Sadly I haven't been taking out my bicycle as much as I'd like to and I plan to change that this spring. After all, we happen to live in one of the most bicycle-friendly spots in the country. And what's a better time to jump back on the seat with National Bike Week being celebrated this month from May 16-20. To celebrate the week, the Sacramento area holds a variety of different bike-related events all through May, including free bicycle maintenance classes, bike rides, the Capitol Bike Fest on May 12th and the finale of the Amgen Tour of California at the State Capitol on May 22nd. Learn more about these and upcoming events, and challenge yourself by logging your biking miles, at MayIsBikeMonth.com.
