Tran Bui Smith | tran.smith@citylifestyle.com

Welcome fall! October is our most delectable issue of the year, filled with dishes and beverages around town—including where to experience them. Tran Bui, our Publication Director, and I had the pleasure of attending Eating with Erica Supper Club right here in North Atlanta. It was a great experience to connect with other women and share conversation and chef inspired plates and wine pairings. Erica has built a large following in the space of women in wine and food and living out your big dreams. Read more on page 22. We also celebrate the fun-spirited winners of 2026 Summer Sippin’ this issue. Sitting down with Kelley Hydrick, we found out why serving the community of Roswell for her at Outback Steakhouse means so much. She is a great leader in many ways from her incredible team to giving back to our schools and first responders. She loves Roswell. There is definitely an art to pairing a favorite wine bottle with a flavorful dish that not only satisfies our taste buds but one that you can also readily experience here in Roswell. Our Deep Roots staff plan the perfect pairings for you in this issue. We know that food and wine can bring us all together, and whether we are sharing a meal with loved ones or enjoying a night out on the town, time spent enjoying is invaluable. We also love bringing you stories about local businesses and a few Roswell events and local people making a difference—sharing their passions and inspiring us through the work they do in our community. I had the pleasure of a beautiful visit to Hotel Bennett in Charleston for my birthday week last month and it did not disappoint. This jewel of the city is a true luxury that must be experienced in real time. I won't soon forget pink Camellia's (see above) where the champagne and caviar flow as well as afternoon tea parties. The rest was just as magical and I will be returning soon. Read about this property and more on page 34. As always, thank you for your continued support of local, and I hope to see you around town at our next Alive in Roswell on October 15. The Drake House gets some vast improvements to their campus Toll Brothers sent a volunteer workgroup out to The Drake House campus, to lay gravel and build wooden picnic tables and benches behind the sports court, so families now can sit and watch their kids play. They also removed an old wooden fence behind The Resource Center and Family Services Center, opening the area up, and built new shelving for our event shed to get storage organized. They had help from several vendors as well.

SUMMER SIPPIN’ CROWNS R O S W E L L’ S B E S T D R I N K S Presented by Roswell Inc and Visit Roswell, Summer Sippin’ invited the community to discover creative drinks, support local businesses and celebrate the flavors that make Roswell a favorite dining destination. ARTICLE BY TRAN BUI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY HANNAH GRELLA

The Whole Truth from Truth Be Told earned first place in Summer Sippin’s cocktail category.

Liberty Dragon from Arepa Grill Kitchen and Wine took first place in the mocktail category.

Roswell spent the summer raising glasses, comparing favorites and discovering new reasons to visit local restaurants during the 2026 Summer Sippin’ competition. After two months of tasting and rating, nine drinks earned top honors across three categories: cocktails, mocktails and non-alcoholic beverages. Presented by Roswell Inc and Visit Roswell, Summer Sippin’ included Gas South and Huntington Bank among its event sponsors. Held June 16 through August 18, Summer Sippin’ invited participating Roswell establishments to create an original drink inspired by the season. Residents and visitors could explore the selections through a free interactive event guide, save favorites, check in at participating locations and rate every sip they tried. Every rating became another opportunity to support local businesses. Each entry had to be new to the menu, summer focused and created with fresh ingredients. That challenge gave bartenders, baristas and beverage teams creative freedom, while customers became part of the judging. Rather than a panel, the event placed the final decision in the hands of people tasting around town. In the cocktail category, The Whole Truth from Truth Be Told Restaurant + Cocktail Lounge took first place. The Continental Cooler from Proper Hop Taphouse finished second, while Tropicoqueta from Fresco Cantina Grille claimed third. Truth Be Told also made the mocktail list. Its Little White Lies finished second, giving the restaurant two winning drinks with names that played perfectly off its brand. First place went to Liberty Dragon from Arepa Grill Kitchen and Wine. Dreamy Desert Iced Infusion from Scooter’s Coffee rounded out the category in third place.

Summer Sippin’ is about more than finding a favorite drink. It encourages people to try somewhere new, revisit a neighborhood spot and experience the creativity, talent and hospitality behind Roswell’s local food and beverage community.

Whit's Pineapple Whip earned Whit's Frozen Custard of Roswell first place in the nonalcoholic category.

16

1st Place Mocktail: Liberty Dragon — Arepa Grill Kitchen and Wine

1st Place Non-Alcoholic: Whit's Pineapple Whip — Whit's Frozen Custard of Roswell

The non-alcoholic category offered something for guests craving a cool treat or a creative caffeine boost. Whit’s Pineapple Whip from Whit’s Frozen Custard of Roswell earned first place. Peach & Mint Cold Brew from Fellows Cafe finished second, and S’mores Cookie Shakes from Scooter’s Coffee took third. Scooter’s Coffee was another double winner, placing in both the mocktail and non-alcoholic categories. This year’s results reflected what makes Summer Sippin’ such a popular Roswell tradition. The competition is about finding a favorite drink, but it also encourages people to try somewhere new, revisit a neighborhood spot and see the creativity behind the city’s food and beverage community. Every order gives a local team an opportunity to introduce its personality in a glass. The range of winners also showed that summer sipping is not limited to cocktails. Mocktails earned their own spotlight, while coffee, frozen custard and dessert-style creations proved that a memorable drink does not need alcohol to stand out. From playful names to unexpected flavor combinations, the finalists gave guests plenty to discuss and share. Although the votes have been counted, the winning list can still serve as inspiration for the next Roswell outing. Summer Sippin’ once again gave Roswell a refreshing way to connect. The drinks brought people through the doors, but the experience highlighted something even more lasting: the local talent, imagination and hospitality that keep people coming back.

“The competition is about finding a favorite drink, but it also encourages people to try somewhere new, revisit a neighborhood spot and see the creativity behind the city’s food and beverage community.”

Roswell's Kenzi Taylor helps individuals of all abilities thrive.

HEALING THROUGH MUSIC

ARTICLE BY TRAN BUI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JUDE&JOJOS, NARDA SIGALA For Kenzi Taylor, giving back to the community where she grew up feels like coming full circle. As Outreach Director and Music Therapist at Perfect Harmony Health, Taylor is helping people of all ages discover the transformative power of music while creating opportunities for connection, confidence, and growth. The nonprofit music therapy organization serves individuals from birth through end of life. Through innovative programs such as Roswell Players, an adaptive theatre troupe, Neuro-vana Rock Band, and Groovin' with Grandfriends, the organization creates meaningful experiences that bring people together while helping participants develop important life skills. “Music therapy is like speech, occupational, or physical therapy, but it uses music to achieve those goals,” Taylor explains. “Because music engages multiple areas of the brain at once, it can help improve communication, motor skills, memory, sensory regulation, and more.” The organization works with people diagnosed with autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injuries, neurologic disorders, and other developmental differences. Music therapists use rhythm, melody, and movement to support each

client's unique needs and strengths. For someone recovering from a brain injury, music may help improve memory and daily living skills. For autistic individuals, the structure and predictability of rhythm can support sensory regulation and communication. What makes Perfect Harmony Health unique is its specialized staff. The practice is the only organization in Georgia with a full team of Neurologic Music Therapists and NICU-certified music therapists, allowing them to collaborate alongside speech, occupational, and physical therapists to enhance client outcomes. For Taylor, the most rewarding moments come when families share milestones they once thought were impossible. She also points to the annual Roswell Players production, where performers with disabilities spend months rehearsing before taking center stage in front of sold-out audiences. “Watching our actors receive standing ovations reminds us that everyone deserves the chance to shine,” says Taylor. “Those moments make all the hard work worthwhile.” perfectharmonyhealth.com

The table at Foundation Social Eatery was bright, beautiful and ready for a special evening. Flowers and thoughtful details welcomed guests, and the four-course menu gave everyone plenty to talk about. But for Erica A. Thomas, what mattered most wasn’t on the plates. It was the conversations happening around the table. The Atlanta native is the lifestyle and entertaining expert behind Eating With Erica, a brand centered on food, hosting, dining and travel. Her recipes, entertaining ideas and restaurant recommendations have been featured by Southern Living, Wine Spectator, CNN, TIME, Reader’s Digest and Woman’s World. Thomas also created Eating With Erica Supper Club, a women-only dining community that brings together memorable meals,

new friendships and genuine connection. The dinner at Foundation Social Eatery marked the launch of Eating With Erica Supper Club’s North Atlanta Chapter, serving Roswell, Alpharetta and Milton. “There are so many incredible restaurants in North Atlanta that deserve to be showcased and supported,” says Thomas. Her love of bringing people together began long before she hosted her first Supper Club dinner. Growing up, meals in her home were filled with laughter, wonderful food and love. Her mother made fresh bread and butter each week, cooked with local produce and developed relationships with area farmers. She also enjoyed experimenting with recipes and introducing the family to unfamiliar foods.

THROUGH BEAUTIFUL TABLES, EXCEPTIONAL MEALS AND AUTHENTIC CONVERSATION, EATING WITH ERICA CREATES A WELCOMING COMMUNITY WHERE WOMEN FORM LASTING FRIENDSHIPS.

Thomas says, “Dinner was never simply about eating, it was an experience.” Those evenings inspired her to create similar traditions with her own family and eventually invite a much larger community to share the table. Eating With Erica Supper Club now hosts monthly dinners along with mahjong open play, cooking classes and curated travel experiences. In three years, the Supper Club has presented more than 55 dinner parties across two countries and four cities. Members have attended Royal Ascot, enjoyed breakfast at Tiffany’s Blue Box Café while staying at The Plaza, and gathered for a pop-up at The Colony Hotel in Palm Beach. The experiences may be polished, but the purpose is personal. Thomas wanted women to have a welcoming place where they could leave their concerns at the door, put away their phones and be present. The community is designed to support members through changing seasons, from marriages and career moves to retirement, divorce and children reaching new milestones. That sense of belonging is what keeps members returning. Cheryl Crisafulli joined about three years ago because she wanted to meet like-minded women, explore Atlanta’s restaurant scene and form genuine friendships. Crisafulli says, “Erica has really created something special where the food is amazing, but the relationships are what keep you coming back.” CONTINUED >

Her involvement has grown beyond monthly meals. She has developed close friendships, expanded her professional network and is preparing to travel to Napa with the group. “What I love most about my membership with the Eating With Erica Supper Club is the sisterhood that we’ve all built.” Member Wendy Stewart was also drawn to the opportunity to try new restaurants while meeting people. “What sets the EWE supper club apart is Erica's ability to curate exceptional dining experiences that blend entertainment, beautiful tablescapes, and opportunities for smart professional women to connect.” For Stewart, the chance to dress up and enjoy a beautiful evening is part of the appeal, but the relationships remain at its heart. Choosing Foundation Social Eatery for the North Atlanta debut was equally intentional. Thomas had supported the restaurant for more than eight years and trusted owners Mel and Sandy Toledo to help introduce the Supper Club to its newest community. She knew one item had to appear on the four-course menu: the mushroom ravioli, a favorite she first enjoyed on a freezing evening years earlier. Every detail of the launch was meant to offer a preview of future gatherings—exceptional food, beautiful tablescapes and authentic conversation. Thomas approaches each event with the belief that all the elements should work together like a symphony. The venue, menu, wine, music and setting matter, but so do the guest list, seating choices, introductions and dietary preferences. Thomas says, “Guests may not remember every course or every flower on the table, but they will remember how the evening made them feel.” The club’s impact reaches beyond its members. Eating With Erica Supper Club has generated more than $100,000 in direct restaurant spending. By intentionally bringing members and guests who value exceptional dining experiences into restaurants, the Supper Club contributes to local economic development while introducing establishments to potential repeat customers. Thomas is also extending the broader Eating With Erica brand through How to Host, an entertaining platform that teaches women to create beautiful experiences in their own homes. Public workshops and private sessions can include cocktail-making classes or caviar and Champagne experiences. She is also preparing to bring Eating With Erica Supper Club to additional Southern cities. As Eating With Erica Supper Club grows, the invitation remains simple: slow down, take a seat and make time for one another. With good food, thoughtful hospitality and the right people gathered together, an ordinary dinner can become the start of a lasting friendship and an evening no one wants to end long after the plates are cleared.

Local Cravings Spotlighting standout dishes that keep diners returning to beloved restaurants. ARTICLE BY ROSWELL CITY LIFESTYLE

Outback Steakhouse Roswell Where Great Steaks Meet an Even Greater Community At Outback Steakhouse Roswell, great food is only part of the story. Led by Proprietor Kelley Hydrick, this neighborhood favorite is passionate about serving Roswell both inside and outside its doors. From hand-cut steaks and iconic Bloomin’ Onions to supporting local schools, feeding student athletes, and showing appreciation for first responders, community is always on the menu. Kelley and her team believe a restaurant should be more than a place to eat—it should be a neighbor you can count on. Come for the steak, stay for the hospitality, and experience why this Outback is proud to call Roswell home. 655 W Crossville Rd, Roswell | https://locations.outback. com/georgia/roswell/655-crossville-road

Sushi Yoko & Tomato Japanese Grocery A family-run Japanese restaurant serving for nearly three decades. One kitchen, two ways to eat well. During the day, SushiYOKO is comfort food. Tonkatsu, donburi bowls, udon, ramen, and lunch sets, the honest Japanese cooking you would find at a neighborhood spot back home. Nothing fussy. Just good. At night, the counter turns to omakase. A seasonal tasting course built around fish flown in from Toyosu Market in Tokyo, served at the pace the chef sets. Same room, two very different concepts. That is the whole idea. If you can sit with us, we will cook for you. If you cannot, you can pick up onigiri, a bento, or one of the first sushi push pops in Atlanta from Tomato2 and take a piece of SushiYOKO home with you. https://sushiyokoatl.com/ 8560 Holcomb Bridge Rd Ste 108

Not Just a Steakhouse OUTBACK, A NEIGHBOR ROSWELL CAN COUNT ON. ARTICLE BY ROSWELL CITY LIFESTYLE

For Kelley Hydrick, owner of Outback Steakhouse Roswell, being part of community goes far beyond serving up steaks and Bloomin' Onions. Whether she's feeding the Roswell High School Hornets before a big game, showing up for local schools, or making sure Roswell's first responders know they're appreciated, Kelley has built her restaurant into more than a neighborhood favorite, it's become a genuine partner in the community. We sat down with her to talk about what giving back really looks like, one plate at a time.

“WE MAY HAVE DELIVERED 150 BURGERS THAT DAY, BUT WHAT I HOPE WE REALLY DELIVERED WAS THE MESSAGE THAT THEIR COMMUNITY IS BEHIND THEM.” -KELLEY HYDRICK YOU HOSTED ROSWELL HIGH SCHOOL HORNETS FOR A MEAL BEFORE THEIR FIRST HOME GAME, WHAT DOES A MOMENT LIKE THAT MEAN TO YOU AS A BUSINESS OWNER IN ROSWELL?

We prepared and delivered 150 burgers to RHS so the players could share a meal together before their first home game. There was something really special about knowing that before they stepped onto that field representing Roswell, we had the opportunity to feed them and be a small part of their day. Roswell High is literally right in our backyard, and these aren’t just customers to us, these are our neighbors, the kids who grow up here, the families who come through our doors, and the people who make this community what it is. For me, owning a business in Roswell comes with a responsibility to give back to the community that supports us. I want those young people to grow up remembering that the businesses around cared enough to show up for them. We may have delivered 150 burgers that day, but what I hope we really delivered was the message that their community is behind them. That’s what makes moments like this mean so much to me.

BEYOND GAME-DAY MEALS, HOW DOES OUTBACK STEAKHOUSE ROSWELL STAY INVOLVED WITH LOCAL SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR?

Our schools are such a huge part of this community, and I never want our involvement to be something we do once and then disappear. We look for opportunities throughout the year to support teams, clubs, teachers, students and school organizations. Give Back events, donations, meals, fundraisers, community events or simply showing up when somebody needs us. Sometimes what means the most isn’t a huge donation or a big event. It’s answering the phone when a school calls and saying, ‘What do you need, and how can we help?’ I want our local schools to know they have a partner here. These kids are growing up in our community, and I believe businesses have a responsibility to invest back into the people who invest in us. CONTINUED >

YOU ALSO MAKE A POINT OF SUPPORTING LOCAL FIRST RESPONDERS—WHAT DOES THAT RELATIONSHIP LOOK LIKE, AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO YOU PERSONALLY?

Our first responders spend their lives showing up for people, often on their hardest days, and so much of what they do happens without recognition. Supporting them is simply our way of saying, we see you, we appreciate you, and you matter to us. I have tremendous respect for the people who serve this community. They don’t get to choose when someone needs them, they just show up. I think there is something really powerful about returning that same spirit. Whether it’s providing a meal, supporting an event or just making sure they know our doors are always welcoming to them, I want them to feel appreciated here. I also give first responders in uniform 50% off when they dine here in Roswell. You can never say ‘thank you’ too many times to people who spend their lives taking care of everyone else.

WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A “NEIGHBOR” AND NOT JUST A RESTAURANT IN ROSWELL, HOW DO YOU WANT THE COMMUNITY TO FEEL WHEN THEY WALK THROUGH YOUR DOORS?

I want people to feel like they belong here. I want them to walk through our doors and feel like they’re walking into a place where people know them, care about them and are genuinely happy they’re here. Restaurants get to be part of people’s lives in ways we sometimes take for granted. We see birthdays, first dates, family dinners, celebrations after a big win and sometimes families who just need a place to sit down together after a difficult day. That’s a privilege. Roswell has supported this restaurant, and I believe we should pour that support right back into Roswell. I don’t want us to simply be the Outback located here, I want us to be Roswell’s Outback. When people think about us, I hope they don’t only remember a great steak. I hope they remember how we made them feel and that when this community needed us, we showed up.

BRAVERY at The TABLE “Hugo’s Brave Bite” launched to Support Families and Food ARTICLE BY ROSWELL CITY LIFESTYLE

For many families, mealtimes are meant to be moments of connection. But for parents of children with feeding challenges, they can be filled with stress, worry, and uncertainty. Local pediatric feeding therapist Charlene Kurkjian, OTR/L, knows this reality well — and she's bringing hope to the table in a new way with the launch of her children's book, Hugo's Brave Bite. Charlene is the founder of Happy Hungry Hippos Feeding Clinic, a pediatric practice dedicated exclusively to helping children who struggle with eating, whether due to extreme picky eating, sensory sensitivities, anxiety around food, or more complex feeding disorders. After 20 years serving families in East Cobb, she relocated her practice to Marietta just off the Square, where she has continued her work for the past four years. "Parents often come to me exhausted and overwhelmed," she shares. "They've tried everything, and nothing feels like it's helping. My role is to help them understand why their child is struggling and how to move forward in a supportive, evidence-based way." That philosophy is at the heart of Hugo's Brave Bite. The idea grew directly from therapy sessions, where Charlene noticed the same fears appearing in children again and again — anxiety around new foods, fear of gagging, fear of doing something wrong. The book follows Hugo, a thoughtful hippo who feels unsure when faced with new foods. Rather than pushing him to "just take a bite," the story gently introduces curiosity, sensory exploration, and small steps — approaches foundational to feeding therapy. Parents often recognize familiar moments in the pages: hesitation at the table, big emotions around food, and the quiet courage it takes to try something new. "Bravery at the table doesn't have to be big," Charlene says. "It just has to begin." Hugo's Brave Bite is available on Amazon and is recommended for preschool and early elementary-aged children. HOTEL ARTICLE BY ROSWELL CITY LIFESTYLE

Bennett

Inside Charleston's Grand Hotel, a vision of 25 years There are hotels you stay in, and there are hotels that tell a story the moment you walk in and leave you with an experience worth taking home. Hotel Bennett, on the corner of King Street and historic Marion Square in downtown Charleston, is unmistakably both. From the marble-clad Grand Court to the pink-hued glow of Camellias, every inch of this 179-room property was built with a deeply personal goal: to give Charleston the grand hotel its developer always believed it deserved. Before we'd even walked into the lobby, we were greeted by three young men, full of smiles and genuine warmth, who took our car to the charger, carried our luggage to our suite, and struck up conversation about what we liked and where we should go around town as well as what to enjoy inside the hotel. The feeling was magical before we'd taken a single step inside the grand lobby. Handing us glasses of champagne upon entrance was just one small gesture the staff extended to us, again and again, over our four-day stay. Hotel Bennett is the vision of Michael Bennett, an eighth-generation Charlestonian and founder of Bennett Hospitality. His family purchased the land in 1990, but the project spent more than twenty years winding through city approvals, and legal battles with preservation groups over building height. This fight made its way to the South Carolina Supreme Court before Bennett won. Joe Riley, Charleston's longtime mayor and Bennett's mentor, stood beside him, reportedly telling Bennett's mother, "We're going to cut that ribbon." And they did. After breaking ground in March 2015, the $101 million hotel opened in January 2019. The site itself carries its own layers of Charleston history, it once housed the original west wing of The

Citadel, and later, Charleston County Library. That legacy lives on in quiet, deliberate details: bookshelves tucked into the suites, stacks of books coordinated across tables throughout the property, a soft nod to the library that stood there before. "Hotel Bennett was constructed with the same classical character and quality as buildings from centuries ago," Bennett says. "To complement Charleston's architectural heritage, we used the finest materials, beautiful limestone, marble, bronze, and copper." He named the hotel to honor his family and his beloved city. That family imprint is everywhere. Throughout the lobby, we noticed artwork and photography celebrating meaningful milestones in the Bennett family's own story as a reminder that this is first and foremost a family business, built with many personal details, down to the crown-embroidered "B" pillows and hotel-branded soaps. It feels as though it has stood on Marion Square for a century. Hotel Bennett blends old-world European architecture with unmistakably Southern warmth. Sweeping rotundas, handpainted murals, and a Grand Court set the tone, while floor-toceiling windows and remote-controlled drapes remind you this is a hotel built for the modern traveler, too. It truly has all the modern conveniences you'd want, layered over that historic imprint giving you the perfect blend of both worlds, and we really felt that embraced in every corner of our stay. The hotel's dining options alone are worth the trip. Gabrielle, the two-tiered signature restaurant, opens onto sweeping terraces overlooking Marion Square. We had a delicious dinner and a wonderful espresso martini to close out the evening. Then there's Camellias, an

entirely pink champagne-and-caviar lounge outfitted with reclaimed marble from the original Charleston Library. This was my favorite room in the hotel and it's become one of the most photographed rooms in the city. It is as popular for afternoon tea as for a glass of champagne. Fiat Lux is the hotel's rooftop pool bar, pouring ocean-inspired cocktails with sweeping skyline views. La Pâtisserie brings a slice of Paris to King Street, serving pastries from a Frenchtrained pastry chef. As a late night treat, we did indulge in the famous Ruby and it was well worth the calories. “This dessert is named for my daughter, Ruby. It's a celebration of the flavors she loves most: rich dark and milk chocolate, lifted by bright raspberry. Vanilla has always been a magical ingredient for me, so a silky vanilla cream brings it all together. The result is a balance of a father's love and a daughter's joy. At the heart of it is a flourless chocolate sponge, wrapped in layers of color, texture, and flavor. I wanted the Ruby to be enjoyed by as many people as possible, so I designed it as gluten nut free. The one thing I could not leave out was the butter and cream. I am French. Some traditions are simply too delicious to break.” Rémy Fünfrock, Executive Pastry Chef at Hotel Bennett CONTINUED > OCTOB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/R O S W E L LGA

“We've known all our lives we Bookshelf in Suite as ode to library

Beyond the plate, Hotel Bennett's amenities read like a checklist for the ultimate Charleston escape: the largest heated rooftop pool in the city, with pastel-painted private cabanas inspired by Rainbow Row. We enjoyed a full lazy afternoon sipping cocktails and snacking there. Also there is a full-service spa with luxury treatments and a state-of-the-art fitness center and more than 20,000 square feet of event space anchored by the 30-foot Crown Ballroom. We had the pleasure of experiencing all of it as hotel guests, and we weren't disappointed once. It's easy to see why Hotel Bennett has earned a reputation as one of the top hotel experiences in the country. It isn't just the marble and the champagne, although that's reason enough to visit. It's that every detail, from the concierge team to the turndown service, was built around genuine Southern hospitality. I come back to the staff as the property's defining feature: the team that remembers names, anticipates needs, and treats every visit like a homecoming rather than a transaction. We were greeted by first name at every turn, and we learned many of the staff's stories being local college students who never wanted to leave the city and many who have remained at the hotel for years. Everyone there seems to genuinely enjoy serving others, and it shows. “I stayed here before I ever worked here. My school put me up at Hotel Bennett my senior year of college while our apartment was being finished, and the staff made me feel looked after at a moment in my life when nothing else felt settled. When a job opened up, I jumped at it. I wanted to be the person who does that for someone else.” Bambi Barr, In-Room Dining at Hotel Bennett For Bennett, the hotel was never a business venture, it was a love letter to his hometown, decades in the making. "We've known all our lives we lived in the most beautiful city in the world, today Charleston is at her best " he said. There's no doubt this will not be our last visit to Hotel Bennett and I recommend you take the short drive over to experience how history and luxury have emerged together in one remarkable place. Fifty Years on the River Chattahoochee Nature Center marks a half-century of connecting metro Atlanta to the wild. When Chattahoochee Nature Center opened its doors in 1976, the concept was so new to Georgia that longtime staffer Dotty Etris remembers fielding calls from confused residents with all sorts of wild misconceptions about what went on there. Fifty years later, there's no confusion left - CNC is one of metro Atlanta's most beloved outdoor destinations, and this year the nonprofit is celebrating a milestone half-century. Founded by citizen activists John Ripley Forbes and Frank McCamey, CNC began as a modest 6.7-acre plot along the Chattahoochee River.Today, that grassroots effort has grown into one of Georgia's most beloved destinations for nature lovers of every age. It spans 127 acres and welcomes more than 150,000 visitors a year, offering trails, wildlife rehabilitation, and environmental education just minutes from downtown Roswell. "It's hard to believe Chattahoochee Nature Center is approaching its 50th year," said CEO Natasha Rice, crediting decades of support from volunteers, members, and the surrounding community for the center's growth. Along the way, CNC added the marsh boardwalk in the 1980s, launched Camp Kingfisher in the 1990s, opened the Discovery Center in the 2000s, and introduced the Unity Garden in the 2010s — which still donates all its produce to North Fulton Community Charities. The nonprofit also recently wrapped a nearly $10 million capital campaign to modernize its campus for the next fifty years.

Where Pumpkins, Praise and Neighbors Gather PRAISE PUMPKINS TRANSFORMS FALL DECORATING INTO WELCOMING EXPERIENCES ROOTED IN FAITH, FAMILY, GRATITUDE, AND TRADITION. For Sheilah Tritt, pumpkins have always represented more than fall decorating. They are tied to childhood, family, faith and the rhythm of the seasons. Tritt, founder of Praise Pumpkins, grew up in a fifth-generation East Cobb and Roswell family. As a farmer’s daughter, she anticipated the transition from watermelon season to pumpkin season, when she could cut pumpkins from the vine and carry them to the porch. Years later, a Sunday church service about the power of praise prompted a question: Why did fall decorations so often celebrate everything except Thanksgiving and gratitude? Remembering that pumpkins symbolize harvest, abundance, generosity and thankfulness, Tritt shared her idea with Barbara Williams. Together, they created Praise Pumpkins, a luxury pumpkin concierge serving homes, businesses, schools, festivals and seasonal events across North Metro Atlanta. “We don't simply decorate with pumpkins, we design experiences,” Tritt says. Praise Pumpkins handles custom design, premium pumpkin sourcing, delivery, professional installation, seasonal maintenance and removal. The company also creates boutique pumpkin patches and photo booths that encourage people to stop, smile and make memories. The heart behind the business is connected to Roswell. Tritt’s great-great-grandfather was among the founders and the first principal of Hickory Flat School. Her great-aunt lived on Arnold Mill Road, and her great-uncle worked as the barber at Chadwick’s Store.

“What I remember most isn't a particular building; it's the feeling. Front porches were full. Neighbors knew one another. People lingered.” That feeling continues to guide every installation. Clients can select an easy experience online or work with the team to develop a more customized collection. After learning about the property, preferred style and desired experience, the team hand selects premium pumpkins and heirloom varieties, then installs the display and returns for removal at the client’s discretion. For Tritt, the finished product is about far more than appearances. “I hope children smile before they ever reach the front door. I hope neighbors stop to say hello. I hope families take the photo they'll treasure for years to come.” Most importantly, she hopes each display encourages people to pause, gather and recognize the meaning of the season. “Most of all, I hope our displays remind people that every harvest is a gift from God.”

One Number, Easier Access City of Roswell Launches 311 for Routine City Services

Got a pothole to report? A question about a city program? Not sure which department to call? Roswell residents now have one easy number to remember and to dial: 311. The City of Roswell has launched the new three-digit line to give residents and businesses a simple way to reach Customer Service for the everyday questions and requests that come with living here — maintenance concerns, general information, or just getting pointed to the right department. "Providing excellent customer service starts with making it easy for residents to reach us," said Mayor Mary Robichaux. "311 gives our community one simple number to access routine City services while reinforcing that calling 911 remains the number for police, fire and medical emergencies. This is another way we're making City government more accessible and responsive to the people we serve."

• Request City information • Ask about City programs and services • Get connected with the right department Calls after hours go to voicemail, so no request falls through the cracks.

What 311 Can Help With

Need City services? Call 311. Need police, fire, or medical emergency assistance? Call 911.

Call 311 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., to: • Report a maintenance concern

Connection can be life-changing for someone carrying grief, navigating a mental health challenge or searching for ways to support someone they love. Sometimes, it begins with a conversation. Sometimes, it starts with a walk. The Atlanta Out of the Darkness Community Walk is a signature event hosted by the AFSP Georgia Chapter, but its impact reaches beyond one morning. Throughout the year, the organization provides education, advocacy, research support and resources for individuals and families facing mental health challenges or coping with profound loss. Programs are designed to meet people where they are, including schools, workplaces, and communities. By helping people recognize warning signs, begin difficult conversations and connect with support, AFSP Georgia works to replace silence and stigma with knowledge and compassion. The work also reaches people before a crisis occurs. Educational programs give students, employees, caregivers and community members practical tools to notice changes in behavior, respond with care and guide someone toward professional help. Advocacy efforts encourage policies that improve access to treatment, while investments in research help deepen understanding of mental health and prevention. That sense of connection is one of the most meaningful parts of the organization’s work. For families who have experienced a devastating loss, meeting someone who understands can be an important step toward healing. Jeannie M. Goff discovered an Out of the Darkness Walk after losing her son, Christian. She and her daughter formed a team called “Walking with Christian,” turning their grief into action while keeping his memory present. “I had a mother look at me and tell me she understood, and suddenly, I did not feel alone,” she said. Ann Marie Farino also found purpose through walking after losing her oldest son, Richard. What

began with short walks near his resting place gradually became preparation for an 18-mile event with several family members joining “Team Richard.” “The walking made me feel like I was practicing selfcare while also honoring my son,” shared Farino. Karen Vaden walks with her daughter in memory of her son, Troy. “Each Walk gives us space to remember, to grieve, and to honor Troy…for who he was and how deeply he was loved,” Vaden added. Those experiences reflect why the Atlanta event is about more than mileage or fundraising. It offers a welcoming space for people remembering someone they love, supporting a friend or family member, navigating their own challenges or simply wanting to help save lives. “Atlanta’s Out of the Darkness Walk is about connection,” explained Christine Curtin, executive director of AFSP Georgia. “Whether someone walks in memory of a loved one, in support of their own mental health journey, or simply because they want to make a difference, there is a place for them here. We want people across Atlanta to know that they are part of a community that cares.” Funds raised through the walk help advance AFSP’s work across Georgia through prevention education, advocacy, research and support for people affected by mental health-related loss. Companies, schools and community organizations can participate through sponsorships, employee teams, volunteering and fundraising, extending the conversation into places where people live, learn and work. The Atlanta Out of the Darkness Community Walk is open to everyone, with no registration fee. It takes place Sunday, November 1 at Piedmont Park in Atlanta. For families searching for understanding and individuals who may feel alone, every step carries the same message: support is here, connection matters and hope can be shared. afsp.org/atlanta

THE

PINK

FIGHT! ARTICLE BY ROSWELL CITY LIFESTYLE

TAKE ACTION THIS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Amid the pumpkins, leaves and scarecrows, October carries an important message. Pink ribbons appear in storefronts and through our community as reminders to honor those affected by breast cancer, celebrate survivors and remember loved ones. According to the American Cancer Society, although women are diagnosed most often, men can develop the disease as well. Breast cancer reaches across ages, neighborhoods and families, touching mothers, daughters, sisters, friends, co-workers and caregivers. Breast Cancer Awareness Month encourages us to turn attention into action. Learn your personal risk factors and speak with a healthcare provider about when mammograms should begin and how often they are recommended based on age, family history and individual risk. Those with a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, identified genetic mutations or other risk factors may benefit from discussing earlier or additional screening with their healthcare provider. Being familiar with your body and attentive to changes is also important. Any new or unusual developments should be shared with a healthcare professional. While not every change is cause for concern, seeking timely guidance can provide reassurance and support early detection. There are many meaningful ways to help. Offer a ride to an appointment, prepare a meal, assist with errands or simply listen. A thoughtful message and consistent presence can help someone navigating treatment feel less alone. Wear pink, encourage a friend to schedule a screening, join a community walk, volunteer or donate to an organization supporting research and families. Upcoming events include the Georgia 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer October 3–4; Susan G. Komen’s Race for the Cure October 17; and The Pink Agenda’s Atlanta Gala at The Dogwood October 22. This October, let every pink ribbon become a call to action: schedule the appointment, extend a hand and help ensure no one faces breast cancer alone. Through awareness, practical support and resolve, our community can turn an October symbol into lasting impact.

There's something about autumn that makes a wine shop feel like a treasure hunt and at Deep Roots Roswell, the hunt was in full swing. The local DR team of ladies were asked to wandered the shelves on the search for the perfect bottles to bring home for the season. Their recommendations go from bold reds for cooler nights, to crisp whites for lingering porch evenings. Each bottle selected and picked with an eye toward the local chefs' pairings waiting to complete the plate.

T HE B E S T DOG-GONE PA R T Y IN R O S W E L L LUCKY’S 16TH ANNIVERSARY-A CELEBRATION OF COMMUNITY, TRADITION AND GOOD TIMES.

ARTICLE BY LISA WELTSCH | PHOTOGRAPHY BY STREET STUDIO + ACCESS NETWORK

Sixteen years is a milestone for any business. For a locally owned restaurant, it represents thousands of meals served, countless conversations across the table, and a community that continues to show up year after year. Last month, Lucky’s Burger & Brew in Roswell celebrated its 16th anniversary the way you might expect from a local institution built around burgers, brews, family, community, live music and a HOWL-LOTTA LOVE of dogs— with one big summer party.

The Lucky’s Team, including Chef Ted and his team, Ernie and Diane Geyer, and of course, Lucky himself!

Owner Ernie Geyer, affectionately known as “Lucky’s Dad,” and longtime manager Chef Ted Lescher welcomed friends, customers and plenty of fourlegged guests for an evening celebrating not only the restaurant’s anniversary, but the relationships that have made Lucky’s a Roswell favorite. The festivities included live music from local favorite 40HZ, served up burgers and cold brews, and the return of one of the event’s most popular traditions: Lucky’s 2nd Best Looking Dog Contest. Dogs of every shape, size, and personality took over Lucky’s Backyard, with some arriving dressed to impress and all competing for bragging rights while supporting a much bigger purpose. Proceeds from the contest benefited Golden Retriever Rescue of Atlanta, helping connect dogs in need with new homes and families. The celebration was also a true community effort, with local vendors and businesses showing their support throughout the event. The dog contest was sponsored by Chattahoochee Animal Clinic and Rock For Rescues, bringing together local businesses, animal advocates and the Roswell community around a cause that has always been a natural part of the Lucky’s story. From the Lucky’s team working behind the scenes to the vendors, sponsors, musicians, dog-contest participants and longtime customers who filled the Backyard, the evening reflected the kind of community support that has helped Lucky’s thrive for 16 years. That may be the real story behind 16 years. Restaurants can begin with a concept, a menu and a location, but the ones that last become something more. They become gathering places. They

become part of birthdays, celebrations, Friday nights, business lunches, live-music weekends and familiar traditions shared with friends and family. Over 16 years, Lucky’s has become part of that fabric in Roswell. The anniversary celebration was a reminder that the strongest local brands aren’t built simply through what they sell. They are built through the experiences people associate with them and the relationships created along the way. For Lucky’s, those relationships include customers who have walked through the doors for years, a dedicated team, community partners, local musicians and, of course, a whole lot of dogs. Sixteen years later, Lucky’s Burger & Brew still knows exactly what kind of place it wants to be: local, welcoming, a little playful and always ready for a good time. Here’s to 16 Lucky Years and the many stories and memories still ahead. Lucky's Burgers & Brews: 1144 Alpharetta St.Roswell www.luckysburgerandbrew.com
