Hudson is the youngest of 3 children and was born a happy, healthy baby. Around 4 months of age, Hudson’s parents started noticing some differences in him, such as weight loss, difficulty nursing, and choking. At 9 months old, Hudson’s mom, Nichole, received the phone call that would forever alter their life. Hudson was diagnosed with a rare, incurable, terminal genetic disease, Gaucher Disease 2. They were told to put Hudson on hospice, that he would have no quality of life, never walk, talk, or live past the age of 2. Town Square Park is getting a facelift. Active in the Atlanta Fly Fishing Club, Roswell's Terry McClean just can't stay off the water.

The only thing Terry McClean of Roswell loves more than fly fishing is learning more about fly fishing and introducing new people to the sport.

As an active member and trip leader with the Atlanta Fly Fishing Club, he fishes once a week during fall, winter and spring, heading to North Georgia and North Carolina’s cool rivers and streams, and will lead a trip out west to fish in Yellowstone in August.

The AFFC has approximately 330 members and meets the second Wednesday of the month at Manuel’s Tavern on Highland Avenue in Atlanta for a program featuring hot topics and expert speakers with time for sharing fishing stories with other members.

Terry is a member of the “Cold Water” group and plans short trout fishing trips at favorite nearby creeks and rivers during the season.

Other members organize “Warm Water” trips to pursue redeye and smallmouth bass in the ponds, lakes and rivers throughout the South, the Caribbean and beyond.

He is also a member of the Upper Chattahoochee Chapter of Trout Unlimited, a national organization dedicated to conserving and protecting the nation's trout cold water fisheries and their watersheds.

Terry and his wife Elaine moved to Roswell two years ago, after 35 years in Tucker, to be

closer to their daughter, son-in-law and three granddaughters. “We find Roswell to be a friendly, welcoming city with access to great parks, restaurants and other amenities,” Terry says.

They have been married for more than 38 years, both hailing from the UK. Terry still carries a lilt, growing up in Belfast, N. Ireland. Terry has been retired for five years and enjoys woodworking, photography and general DIY activities for friends and neighbors.

MEET FRANK HASTY

"Having family involved to the degree that we are is a big plus, because we share the same philosophy of putting customers first."

Frank Hasty’s Roswell roots are deep. His great-grandfather was the Roswell Constable in the late 1800s. He had 21 children and their homestead was on what is now Jones Drive, off Atlanta Street just south of the square.

Growing up in Buckhead, Frank and his dad would spend weekends at Lake Lanier. “We would put a 10 foot Jon boat in my mom’s station wagon and my dad and I would drive to Lake Lanier, launch the boat and find an island to camp on for the weekend,” says Frank.  “The lake had plenty of fish and fewer people back then and we always ate what we caught. My job was to wash the dishes in the sand on the beach. We didn’t have soap so sand was the next best thing.”

His father was a mechanical engineer, educated at Georgia Tech. “He was very accomplished and very smart. He taught me how to use a slide rule when I was in the third grade. He had me solving math problems that were many years ahead of what I was doing in school,” says Frank.

Now, Frank and his family light up Roswell’s most beautiful homes. For the business, Abulous Landscape Lighting, his wife of 40 years, Laura manages accounting, their daughter Nicole handles job scheduling and payroll and their son-in-law Zach runs the field crews. “Having family involved to the degree that we are is a big plus, because we share the same philosophy of putting customers first and taking care of them no matter what,” says Frank.

Most of their customers are acquired through referrals and Abulous has earned 400 five-star reviews on Google. Frank attributes this to listening to customers, creating a beautiful landscape lighting design, providing the very best price, and by being there to take care of any issues that may arise down the road. "If there are any issues with a job, we make a return trip as soon as possible to alleviate the situation,” promises Frank.

While the business has a strong history of successful installations and happy customers, they are firmly planted in the future of the industry. “We are always learning. We have a very robust software system that controls every aspect of our business. It allows us to better serve clients and serve more of them effectively,” says Frank.

One trend in the industry is the emerging availability of color changing lights. New products are less expensive and more durable. Abulous offers a system that allows customers to change the color of their landscape lights with an app on their phone.

Frank and Laura have a grown son Taylor and daughter Nicole. Taylor is married to Heather and they have a 18-month-old daughter, Addison. Nicole is married to Zach Cole and they have a three-year-old son Everett, and a 4-month-old daughter, Emery.

The business has recently expanded, with a branch on the Florida panhandle: Destin/30A Outdoor Lighting. “It is very rewarding to help customers get their nice vacation homes well lit and looking nice. We also have a good amount of business with HOAs and vacation properties in Destin,” says Frank.

The Hastys keep their offshore fishing boat in Destin Harbor and enjoy time out in the gulf fishing for snapper, grouper, “and whatever else we can find hanging out on the wrecks and rocks on the floor of the Gulf of Mexico. If the waves are high we just stay in the harbor, bay or pass and enjoy a nice sunset and watch the dolphins play,” Frank says.

On any given day, you might find baker and entrepreneur, Jonathan St. Hilaire posing with a loaf of bread. The sourdough breads and pastries he bakes at Mission Bakery are as photogenic as they are delicious. Jonathan is the owner of the microbakery, and he bakes with organic flours, grains, and sugars.

"We source our flours from King Arthur Flours, Barton Springs Mill in Texas, Lindley Mills, in North Carolina, and Day Spring Farms, here in Georgia. We use only Plugra Butter in our croissants, danishes, scones, and cookies," he says, "and we use fruits and produce from local farmers when available. We believe in only natural fermentation and do not use manmade yeasts in our bread. We strive for a long fermentation process (72 hours) with all of our sourdough breads."

WHAT MENU ITEMS ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT FOR JUNE?

I am definitely excited about all the fresh fruit including strawberries and raspberries for Danishes and tarts. I also love making my sesame semolina bread. That bread just screams summertime to me.

I FEEL THE BEST ADVICE THAT I EVER GOT WAS, "Keep your head down, work hard, TREAT OTHERS THE SAME WAY YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE TREATED, AND DON’T FORGET TO take time out for YOURSELF."

WHAT ADVICE DID YOUR DAD (OR OTHER MALE FAMILY MEMBER)

GIVE YOU THAT HAS STUCK?

I feel the best advice that I ever got was, "Keep your head down, work hard, treat others the same way you would like to be treated, and don’t forget to take time out for yourself.'"

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A YOUNG MAN INTERESTED IN CULINARY ENTREPRENEURSHIP?

I would definitely tell him to find a chef that he admires and go and see if he can work for them. You don’t wanna go work somewhere just to work, so if you’re gonna go work, it might as well be for somebody that you want to work for.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE ROSWELL AS YOUR BUSINESS HOME?

I love Roswell because of the community. I feel like everyone here is always looking out for everyone else. If there’s a fundraiser for this, everybody gets involved. If there’s a pop-up over there, then everybody gets involved. It’s something that is really, really special to me.

HOW WILL YOU BE CELEBRATING FATHER'S DAY THIS YEAR?

Hopefully, I will be spending it at home with my wife and two sons, enjoying just a nice, relaxing day. Those are very tricky in the summer. I feel like it’s always go, go, go. My wife and I have been married for 20 years. Our two boys just finished their freshman year at Roswell High School. They both play football for the Hornets and one of my sons plays lacrosse for Roswell. The last time we chatted with Peytan Porter, she was sitting in a Nashville coffee shop after just having relocated there from her hometown of Dawsonville. Growing up in Dawsonville, one of three girls, she spent time in the basement listening to music, studying songwriters, literature and marketing. When she moved to Nashville, she surrounded herself with a supportive professional team. She had just released her first record, In My Head,  and was hoping to tour and dedicate herself to a signature project.

Peytan Porter: I’m so honored to be opening for Tim McGraw on these dates. I’m really excited because I will be playing arenas for the first time in my career. I’ve

never played a room even close to that size, so it’s pretty surreal. Not to mention that one of them is State Farm Arena in Atlanta, which isn’t too far from my hometown in Dawsonville, so I’m hoping to see some familiar faces at that one, which is always extra special!

SC: TELL US ABOUT YOUR FANS. HOW DOES THEIR SUPPORT FUEL YOUR SUCCESS?

PP: My fans have been really kind in letting me evolve creatively as an artist and person. They are really supportive of any direction my creativity takes me in. The freedom to be authentically myself is the best gift they could give me.

SC: WHAT ARE A FEW CREATURE COMFORTS YOU'LL TAKE ON THE ROAD WITH YOU?

PP: I take my teddy with me on the road. He has been to almost all of my tour stops! I got him my senior year of high school and I always take him along with me. I also always have Twizzlers and coffee!

SC: WHAT ELSE IS HAPPENING IN YOUR CAREER NOW?

PP: There’s been a lot going on that I’m super excited about! I’ve been writing a ton and I’m gearing up to release new music. I also just played my first headlining shows. I played The Basement in Nashville and Eddie’s Attic in Atlanta. I also made my Grand Ole Opry debut in May, which was crazy to wrap my head around. I’m always trying to be as busy as possible and on the road as much as I can. I think it’s going to be a great second half of the year!

Roswell’s Home Town Mortgage has something important in common with Georgia’s beloved breakfast classic, Waffle House. Steve Beecham, founder and partner at Home Town explains, “Yes, we say we are open 24/7 like the Waffle House. In other words we never take time off from doing someone’s loan or answering their questions. Someone is here to help when you need it, including evenings and weekends!”

Steve and his son Connor have built the business over the last decade and have reaped the rewards beyond just success. "We both teach each other. Most parents just want to tell their kids what to do, but I have tried to be very open about new ideas,” says Steve. “Social Media is a big one for me. Connor has a lot more expertise and we have tapped into that.”

Connor has handled hiring with Steve’s input and together they learn what works and what doesn’t. “I always give my opinion if I have one, but I always say, 'try it and see what happens.' A lot of learning to grow and operate a business is by trial and error and you need to let each other try new things,” says Steve.

Together, they find that first-time buyers generally want to know how much they qualify for. “They have no idea what they can buy or how much money they need to have. When we work with first-time buyers, we try to go over everything with them including how tax and insurance escrows are calculated and who can gift them money,” says Steve.

"Right now," he explains, "it is just finding a house that is in your price range and beating out others who might want it too. Competition is fierce in the $300$600k price range right now and a lot of people are still making multiple offers to get a home."

“Often our clients need our advice on navigating real estate after a divorce with questions like, can they buy a new home without selling their current one? They trust us to help them prepare and handle issues large and small. Others call on us again because we took care of them like family.”

He’s been able to hit the road at this stage of his career, sharing his knowledge at industry conferences for business owners and professional salespeople or Zoom workshops with smaller groups.

This year he did a keynote in New Orleans for Spherion, a franchise model for the staffing industry. He was also a speaker at Tarkenton Financial in Nashville. They wholesale financial products like annuities to mostly independent financial advisors.

We asked him to share three highlights from his recent presentations.

1. I can’t spend money with you if I don’t know you exist. You have to get in front of people so they know to give you a call.

2. If you change your mindset to giving instead of taking there is no one you can't talk to. Go into every conversation wondering how you can be Santa Claus for the person in front of you. How can you WOW them.

3. Always leave people with a picture of what you are looking for, not an elevator speech. People see pictures!

BATHED IN BEAUTY

When a North Atlanta homeowner decided it was time to upgrade their bathroom, they called on the expertise of Three 11 Interior Design’s Leigh Nicholson and Gina Weintraub. Three 11 had recently completed the kitchen and first floor remodel of the property, so the proof was in the work and they knew this next project would also be a winner.

We’re Still Serving! Those are the proud words spoken by every member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) throughout the United States of America.  And these words are very appropriate as they truly exemplify their ongoing mission with patriotism at its core.

North Fulton County has the honor to be represented by VFW Post 12002 with Commander Jim Davis leading his almost 300 veteran membership through numerous ongoing causes for veterans and the surrounding community.

“First and foremost,” says Commander Davis, “This organization is for the support and benefit of our nation’s combat veterans that served overseas.  They proudly served and now we proudly serve them. And we welcome more members.”

The Commander explained that membership benefits include a strong voice in Washington D.C. to keep Veterans Benefits and secure future benefits as well as discounts from supporting businesses and access to nearly 6,000 Posts Worldwide!

And for the community, there are numerous programs that require attention and financial support. Each year, for example, Post 12002 participates in a series of national programs that benefit the North Fulton County community including scholarships for middle and high school students, first response recognition awards, and support of local Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) Cadets, scouts, and teachers as well as contributing to Georgia and National Veterans Programs including the VFW’s National Home for Children.

“Post 12002 has annual expenses exceeding $20,000 with no source of revenue other than asking the patriotic minded businesses and individuals of Alpharetta, John’s Creek, Milton, and Roswell to underwrite the cost of our programs, that serve the community,” explained Senior Vice-Commander Ron Cowan.  “And while the community has always been very supportive, we need more support to effectively accomplish our mission.”  Ron cited just a few of many programs such as Wreaths Across America for the Old Roswell Cemetery, Firefighter, Law Enforcement Officer, EMT and 911 Dispatcher of the year awards, student and teacher of the year and so many others that recognize individuals within the community that represent the best of American patriotism as well as humanity itself.

With Memorial Day only days ago, Flag Day and July 4th upon us, we should do more than remember the veterans of VFW Post 12002, as well as those of other U.S. veteran associations, by helping them fulfill their “We’re Still Serving” mission by supporting them.

Tom's Day

Before his first coffee, Tom Tumbleson squeezes more into his morning than I do in most days.

He’s up with the sun, listening to a morning motivation, working out, getting his kids ready for school at Mountain Park and Crabapple Academy and checking in with the entrepreneurs and CEOs at Nexus Roswell. Tom is the founder of Nexus, a cowering space with private offices and community space.

He visits with prospective clients (solopreneurs, remote execs, small businesses, freelancers), actively reaches out to community partners, and consistently works on ways to add value to the team and current/future Nexus members. His goal is to support his team in events and meetings, while continuing to build awareness for the coolest coworking location in Roswell.

This month, reflecting on Father’s Day, he gives a shout-out to his dad, grandfathers, two brothers and father-in-law. “They have all had a huge impact on my mindset and day-to-day approach! They are all the hardest working guys I know and I’m so blessed to have them in my life as role models for me and my sons,” says Tom.

His dad has been a farmer in a small town in Illinois for 53 years. “I worked next to him until I moved to Memphis after college. He is the most consistent, hard working guy I’ve ever worked next to. Rain, shine, sick, or tired, Dad always got the job done. The value I admire most in a person is grit and that definitely comes from my Dad!”

Tom will be celebrating Father’s Day this month with his family, his wife of 10 years, Kristyn and their children, Joanna (7), Grady (5), and TJ (5 months) along with their dog, Bentley. “I am a lucky man,” said Tom. “We’ll make monkey bread with the kids, maybe even double down with Sarah Donuts the day before and hopefully a walk through Leita Thompson Park, and time to play out back."
