I hope this letter finds you laying by the pool or lake and soaking in some much-needed vitamin D or perhaps headed out on an really cool adventure.
As the days grow longer and the weather gets warmer, I find myself eagerly anticipating the arrival of summer. There's just something about this season that brings about a sense of excitement.
When the summer solstice rolls around, I’m more than ready for the chance to walk the streets of Roswell with friends, sip a cold drink, hang with friends at the lake or ride in my golf cart around the neighborhood and catch a delightful sunset!
The pages in our Summer Fun issue will help you make the most of this season in Roswell and beyond. Check out the North Georgia and beyond travel stories we bring this season.
And even if summer doesn't mean three months of summer vacation anymore (because we're, you know, adults), we can still look forward to an adventure by crossing things off our summer bucket list. (P.S. teachers, you deserve this much-needed break!).
I have been enjoying playing some golf and pickleball this summer already. I also look forward to exploring new hiking trails, visiting wineries going for bike rides, and even just having a Fourth of July picnic in one of our many parks. Check out our picnic pairing on page 56. There's something about being in nature that feels so rejuvenating and refreshing.
Summer Sip and eat your way around the world in our own backyard here as we showcase a few of Roswell's cultural experiences.
Patriotism! That is what the Fourth of July means to me—Old Glory and plenty of red, white, and blue. It is a time to pay tribute to our past and present soldiers, who deserve so much gratitude and honor. A big thank-you and a giant hug to all of our military personnel, as well as your families!
Just like this season has a way of bringing people together, we hope the pages inside this month’s issue will enrich and enliven your experience of supporting our local partners in Roswell this summer!
Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life. Book that trip you’ve been thinking about, to make time for the things that matter most to you, but often come last on the calendar.
Yours truly,
July 2024

When the Georgia Broncos Club learned about Phillip “Paw Paw” Brown’s 1969 Bronco, they knew they had to help. Paw Paw had dreamed of refurbishing his beloved vehicle, but his passing left the project unfinished. Moved by this story, volunteers and donors united to make his dream a reality.
Project Paw Paw Brown started in July 2022 and the restored vehicle was revealed in April 2024 during a special celebration at Deep Roots Wine Market and Tasting Room in Roswell.
When the cover came off the Bronco, daughter Kymberly Matthews was overwhelmed. "I was so happy that Daddy’s dream had finally come to fruition," she said. "The new look was a perfect blend of rugged and vintage, keeping his spirit alive."
“When I saw it, I envisioned my Paw Paw in the front seat smiling,” shared granddaughter Kylie Elliott. “It felt like a part of him was with me again!”

“Paw Paw was a dedicated Boy Scouts troop master and I will always cherish the times we spent together on camping trips,” said grandson Zack Smith. “To see the Bronco restored, especially in a way he always wanted, means the world to me and my family.”
Georgia Broncos founder Brian LaFluer said that seeing the family’s reaction made all the efforts worthwhile. “This was our first time doing a community build. It was a humbling experience,” admitted LaFluer. “We had 42 volunteers, 900 work hours and over $12,000 in donations.”
“This was a complete frame-off restoration to ensure the family received a safe and reliable Bronco,” added lead builder Gabe Donnelson from Strange Klassics Garage. "We knew it was an important piece of Mr. Brown’s legacy. We wanted to honor his vision.”
"This project was challenging, but incredibly rewarding," volunteer Chad Blotske shared. "It brought the community together. I gained new friends and family.”
Volunteer Troy White was inspired to join the project with his son Parker. "No matter how many hours it took or how hard it would be, the family needed this connection to their Paw Paw. It was truly incredible to give back."
Volunteers discovered some of Paw Paw’s personal belongings in the tailgate.
“When we first saw the Bronco out in the field it was like a time capsule. We repainted the toolbox, cleaned up the tools, and conditioned his gloves,” shared Erin Donnelson, co-owner of Strange Klassics Garage. “The finishing touch was to have the volunteers sign the toolbox."

Special Needs Respite (SNR) founder Stacy Georges holds a B. A. in Therapeutic Recreation from Purdue University. She started the organization in 2017 with the goal to serve as many of the 7,000+ families as possible that are waiting for state funded respite care. She and her husband Tom know the struggles of raising two special needs children into adulthood who require the accommodations other families seek.
SNR helps bridge the existing funding gap that many parents have when trying to get childcare for their special needs child. “We can provide funds that will pay qualified caregivers,” Stacy explains, “to care for these children when no other way to pay is available to the parents.” SNR pays qualified caregivers or agencies to provide respite childcare for children with special needs so their parents can get a break; whether it's for several hours or several days. SNR has relationships with approved respite care providers in case parents do not already have a caregiver for their child.
The organization helps these families in the form of an "award," which is a set amount of funding that can be used to pay caregivers. The funds are set aside for three months, during which time the caregiver submits invoices to SNR as care is rendered. Once the funds are exhausted or expired, the award is complete. Families can get up to four awards per calendar year.
And since “special needs” is a broad category, ranging from mildly autistic to fully paralyzed and there is no approved list of diagnoses, Special Needs Respite will consider any child under 26. Stacy states simply, “For the purposes of being awarded a respite
scholarship, if you consider your child to have special needs, fill out an application listing the diagnosis along with a narrative describing your situation.”
With processes in place to serve families and meet the ever-increasing demand, SNR is seeking introductions to private businesses that are willing to make an investment in making social change by giving parents hope. “Parents tell us that knowing they can get a brief break helps them make it through another day," Stacy explains. The research has found that parents raising a special needs child are much more likely to divorce. In addition, these parents are prone to physical and mental health issues as they face isolation, depression, and despair. SNR can make a difference.
Stacy concludes, “Donations are the only way we can continue to provide this much-needed help to our community. Every dollar makes a difference in the lives of special needs families.”

Summer in Roswell is a blast with Summer Sippin’, Alive in Roswell, patio dining and cruising Canton Street.
But, a road trip north can bring equal parts lightness and adventure to your July, so we’ve put together a mountain getaway to make your summer sing.
Thanks to a new boutique hotel, downtown Clayton has a new look. Bridge Creek Inn opened late last year by the award-winning team at Indigo Road Hospitality. originally built in the early 1920s. Bridge Creek Inn’s bright, welcoming lobby boasts a rotating collection of work from local artists and a “history wall” of photography showcasing the past lives of the hotel.
The Vandiver, an American tavern-style restaurant, is slated to open later this month; but the coffee bar, BCI Coffee & Co, is serving grab-and-go house-made pastries, snacks, and sandwiches, espresso and coffee drinks, wine, and local beer on draft.
Bridge Creek Inn’s own hiking concierge Zach Girgenti can map out a customized itinerary for your outdoor adventures. Yoga in the courtyard, in partnership with Clayton Yoga, provides a complimentary class to guests, and Shady Creek Fly Fishing offers discounted rates to guests as does Laprade’s Marina Boat Rentals.
Wine tasting at nearby Tiger Mountain Vineyards in Rabin Gap offers casual tastings and higher-end experiences featuring paired tastings, vineyard tours, and more. 12 Spies Vineyards is pouring 14 labels in their Scaly Mountain seasonal tasting room. The Vineyard at High Holly is a family-owned and operated winery on nearly 30 acres of lush, rolling hills and boasts a working vineyard, award-winning dahlia garden, tennis courts, pond and waterfalls, event pavilion and walking trails throughout.
Bridge Creek Inn's central location puts you nearby state parks (Tallulah Gorge and Black Rock Mountain), trails (including many day hikes on the Appalachian Trail), and water activities (whitewater rafting on the Chattooga River or boating on nearby Lake Burton and Lake Rabun).

Growing up, our family’s summer vacation meant piling into the station wagon for two glorious weeks on Lake Michigan. It was the only time I ever saw my mother napping mid-day, on the deck of the cottage under a canopy of jack pines.
We asked a few of Roswell’s brightest leaders to hit pause and share their vacation memories, plans and hacks. Bon Voyage!
President & CEO, Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce
THE WHOLE FAMILY:
Kali and David Boatright have two children, Aiden (27) and Devon (24).
Unplugging with friends and family and eating great food.
We traveled as a family to Argentina over the holidays. Our favorite activity was wine tasting in Mendoza and our most memorable meal was at one of the wineries that has a Michelin star restaurant (something we were only able to do because the Argentinian pesos dropped right before we arrived). Mendoza, Argentina is the only producer of malbec wine in the world – hence the need to visit!
I’m taking a trip with my husband to Portugal in June to focus on yoga, reading, and centering myself so I can be a better leader for the Chamber and business in our region.
I always wear an anklet if I’m on vacation. It’s like a little symbol to myself to relax and truly enjoy the break.

POSTCARD MEMORIES:
My husband and I took a quick solo trip to Nashville in April to see a concert at the Ryman Auditorium. This is a famous music venue and a bucket list item for sure! We got to see one of our favorite musicians, Johnny Swim. It was very memorable!
SUMMERTIME, SUMMERTIME:
We have family in Florida and will visit them and spend time on the beach! We love to play in the ocean, take boat rides, and look for dolphins.
Rob and Danielle Montepare have been married for 14 years and have four children: Hannah (12), Kolbe (9), Caeli (6), and Lily (3). They have a unique family situation in that they all work and attend school on the same campus! Rob is the director of mission at St. Peter Chanel Catholic Church. Danielle is the assistant principal at Queen of Angels Catholic School and three of the children attend school there as well. “We feel truly blessed to work for the church and to bring Christ into this corner of Roswell, and hopefully beyond,” says Danielle.
ON INDEPENDENCE DAY:
Friends and family and fireworks! We live in Wexford and one of our awesome neighbors puts on the best fireworks display I have ever seen!
Baby wipes and wine! Two necessities when traveling with children.
Millicent and Jon-Paul will celebrate their 22nd anniversary this year. They married in the Roswell Presbyterian Church’s Historic Chapel in 2002. Keagan, their oldest son, attends the University of Georgia and will be a sophomore this fall. Gavin is a rising high school sophomore and rows for Atlanta Juniors, based out of Roswell on the Chattahoochee River. He attends Walton HS. Cara is a rising seventh grader and enjoys ballet and Girl Scouts.
President, WellStar North Fulton Hospital Senior Vice President, WellStar Health System
We will spend it with our family in Roswell and Atlanta. We try to avoid traveling that week, so we will most likely be at our neighborhood pool.
Last summer, our family visited London, Paris and Bavaria. While any international travel has its challenges, having those shared experiences with your family is invaluable. We attended mass at Westminster Abbey, ate escargot at a Parisian cafe and climbed a hill in southern Germany to visit the fairytale Neuschwanstein Castle.
We do plan to travel this summer, but have yet to agree upon a location. We are open to any recommendations!
Perhaps the only unique item I bring is a portable CPAP. I believe it is one of the best devices available for a good night’s sleep. And if you are a snorer, it is a gift to everyone traveling with you. At the hospital, I know an excellent pulmonologist who can schedule you for a sleep study!
Family is everything to me, and I feel incredibly blessed to have such a wonderful and loving family. My name is Tod (aka Smiley). I'm 62 years old and am the general manager and partner of Carl Black Roswell. I have an amazing wife named Shica, who is 41 years old and is the CEO of Shica Baker Beauty. We are a blended family with three children: two beautiful daughters and one handsome son. Ashley is 35 years old and is the director of operations at Roswell Inc. Amanda is 30 years old and works as a veterinarian technician, and our incredible son Mason is 14 years old and a rising freshman at Roswell High School. We also have an awesome son-in-law, Benjamin, who works in ecology. Our family is made complete with our two adorable granddaughters, Benjamin and Ashley's children, who light up our lives. They bring so much joy and laughter to our family, and we cherish every moment we spend with them.
July 4 is a special day for our family. We have a tradition that we look forward to every year. We host an annual Fourth of July party at our home. It has become a cherished tradition for our family and friends. This year, however, we have an exciting twist to our plans. We will be heading to Disney World as a family to create unforgettable memories. Our family will be celebrating the holiday a day early, on July 3, so that we can embark on this magical adventure together. Disney World is one of our favorite places. We can't wait to make lasting memories with our children and grandchildren.
Last year was a truly special year for our family. We had the incredible opportunity to go on a family trip together. It was a trip of a lifetime. One of the most memorable moments was seeing the pure joy and excitement on our granddaughter's face when she saw Olaf and Stitch and watching fireworks on Main Street. It was a magical experience for all of us, and it's a moment that will forever be etched in my memory. Growing up, I never had the chance to witness such pure happiness. It made me realize the importance of creating unforgettable experiences for our loved ones.
Tod Baker General Manager, Carl Black Buick GMC Roswell
Maintaining a demanding schedule at the dealership can be challenging, but my wife has taught me a valuable lesson: life is short, and we should make the most of every moment. After our July trip to Disney World, we are considering going on a cruise to simply enjoy some "us time." Our son Mason plays travel baseball, so his schedule keeps us quite busy. It can be difficult to make concrete plans with his schedule, but we always prioritize family time and creating lasting memories together.
When it comes to packing for our trips, I have to give credit to my amazing wife. She takes care of all the packing details and ensures that we have everything we need. My motto is if we forget something, we can buy it or we don’t need it. However, there are a couple of items that we always make sure to have with us. Wireless chargers are a must-have and we also carry rose water for burns, just in case.
Mendocino's coast, a vegan resort, giant redwoods and charming community feel so good.
ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS
PHOTOGRAPHY BY SUE G. COLLINS, STANFORD INN
When I told my husband that I booked a stay at the Stanford Inn by the Sea in Mendocino, California, I may not have mentioned that it was a vegan resort. He’s a life-long carnivore and starts and ends his day with milk. From a cow, not from nuts.
“Joan Stanford and her husband Jeff own the inn and they have created the most unique hotel lobby.”
After the drive north from SFO, past Napa Valley and over the hills and through a tunnel of redwoods and the Anderson Valley wine country, we checked in and sat down to dinner at the resort’s whole plant-based Ravens Restaurant. The meals, inspired by the on-site certified organic garden, composting and recycling programs, the cleaning supplies, electric and bio-diesel fueled vehicles make Stanford Inn & Resort North America’s only truly sustainable destination. We tucked into the futomaki and maple-tamari glazed tofu and a glass of sparkling wine from Roederer Estate Brut, Anderson Valley, just down the road. We vowed to spend the next day wine tasting along Route 128. Dinner was an adventure, one that we both reveled in. Every dish was packed with flavor and the view across the farm to the Pacific was nourishing.
Joan Stanford and her husband Jeff own the inn and they have created the most unique hotel lobby I’ve ever experienced with a curated collection of books and gifts for sale to support a healthy and creative lifestyle. Tables and shelves in the lobby are neatly stacked with interesting titles and thought-provoking subjects. In Joan’s book, The Art of Play, she shares her journey through art and poetry and urges us to pay attention to the imagery our daily lives present to us, which can expand our awareness and joy. Sid Garza-Hillman is a certified nutritionist and the events and wellness programs director at The Standford Inn. He believes the closer the human species moves by degrees to its natural design, the healthier and therefore happier it will be. His titles include ULTRARUNNING FOR NORMAL PEOPLE: Life Lessons Learned On and Off
the Trail, Raising Healthy Parents: Small Steps, Less Stress and a Thriving Family and others . He plans private classes/sessions in nutrition and healthy living, cooking, creative playshops, breath-work, meditation, Chinese medicine, acupuncture, Tai Chi, yoga, massage and spa treatments, gardening, nature walks, mushroom foraging and more.
We discovered that when you eat clean, you feel lighter and stronger, which came in handy when we climbed into a dugout canoe at Catch A Canoe, the Stanford Inn’s outdoor adventure shop. Built by a local boat builder and designed for ease and comfort, the redwood outrigger was sturdy and fun to paddle up the moody Big River Estuary where we spotted families of river otters and harbor seals and felt the presence of coho and Chinook salmon and steelhead trout.
A drive down the twisting two-lane Highway 128 took us through the Navarro River Redwoods State Park where the road turned dark midday in a tunnel of magnificent second-growth redwood groves. Pull over and try to wrap your arms around a redwood. You won’t even hug a third of the massive trunk. The road leads from the coast’s windswept bluffs to the Anderson Valley, a bucolic wine country home to award-winning vineyards like Lula Cellars and Roederer Estate.
The charming and historic town of Mendocino is perched on dramatic cliffs, so stop in at the Bay View Coffee Shop (movie posters and cow's milk!) and meet the Pacific head-on.

BRANDI RHODES OWNER, NAKEDMIND YOGA + PILATES
ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS
Before a flight, try a forward fold with bent knees which stretches out the hamstrings and lower back, so you don't get aches and knots during your flight. It's always good to get up and walk around on long international flights to keep your blood flowing.
When I travel, I take along plenty of water, my laptop and of course, my daughter! My go-to protein bars are Go Macro or FitCrunch. For my 3-year-old, the keys to kids' happiness on flights are snacks and games!
This summer, we’re heading to Disney World, Toronto, Tokyo and Watercolor on 30a! NakedMindStudio.com
SHANNON RENEGAR, OWNER, BODYBAR PILATES ALPHARETTA + ROSWELL
1570 HOLCOMB BRIDGE ROAD, SUITE 200, ROSWELL
I'd suggest a runner’s lunge and pigeon stretch before a flight to stretch out the hamstrings and open the hip flexors prior to sitting for hours in one position; and cobra,
mermaid and door supported chest opener to open the body back up after a long flight and hauling luggage. The runner’s lunge stretch is great for hip flexors, quads and abs. You start facing front in a plank position on your hands and toes. Step one foot forward, in between your arms, then lift your chest to feel the stretch in the front of the straight leg. Step the foot back to meet the other foot in a plank position and repeat on the other side. The Pigeon Stretch is great for releasing tight glute and abductor muscles. To get into the Pigeon position, sit with your right leg bent at a right angle in front of you, leaning forward slightly on your hands. Extend your left leg straight behind you, keeping your hips squared. Hold the position, then switch legs.
I always travel with plenty of face and body moisturizer. We love Old Whaling Company’s body butter to counteract the dry air of the airplane. Plus, it smells delicious, and its beachy scents put you in the vacation zone before you even leave home. Aloha Bags are waterproof, packable bags that are great for strolling around your favorite city or farmers market, storing your dirty laundry or wet items, or for extra storage for all the "extra" treasures you found on your latest trip! A massage ball is easy to pack, and helps those achy areas like feet, shoulders and calves that come from traveling and walking.
As for snacks, I pack trail mix - a nice variety of heart healthy nuts and seeds, mixed with dried fruit for energy; water mixed with electrolytes to help with hydration; and vitamin C for immunity boost.
Where to next? The beach, any beach would work, but if we’re dreaming, let’s aim for the French Riviera! BodyBarPilates.com
To combat jet lag, our Super Infusion is tailored to provide hydration, electrolytes, and essential vitamins that can help alleviate the symptoms of jet lag, allowing you to feel more energized and refreshed upon arrival at your destination or upon returning from a long vacation.
Additionally, traveling often exposes us to new environments and potential pathogens, making it crucial to boost our immune systems beforehand. Our Immune Package Infusion is specifically designed to boost your immune system with a potent blend of vitamins and nutrients, helping to strengthen your body's natural defenses and minimize the risk of falling ill during your travels.
When I travel, I carry my passport, a water bottle, and a portable charger. Plus, a bag of nuts, fruit and protein bars. This summer, I plan to go on a cross-country road trip with my boyfriend for our anniversary. We will go to National Parks across the U.S.!

Get a facial before you fly, and drink plenty of water! Instead of make-up, wear a tinted moisturizing sunscreen which will protect and hydrate. We suggest Flex by Colorscience. It has just the right amount of tint with unbeatable mineral SPF 50.
At Wellspring, we are excited about better formulations for today’s suncreens that focus on improving UV radiation protection and environmental sustainability. Make sure your product contains iron oxide to protect from the most harmful rays.
Our top three facial sunscreen recommendations are Colorscience Flex (available in 4 shades) $54, Revision Intellishade $84, and Colorscience No-Show Mineral Sunscreen $45. You can get your glow back after traveling by scheduling a Diamond Glow facial with Dermaplane. This is great for hydrating the skin and exfoliating after a vacation.

From bustling markets, bakeries, and roadside eateries, to dockside fine dining restaurants, St. Maarten is a rich, delicious, global culinary adventure. It’s picnic time! Along with fabulous food, extraordinary accessories enhance the perfect picnic. Here are some tips for an outstanding outdoor meal:
• Scented outdoor candles delight guests and save them from itchy bug bites.
• If your picnic is on the ground, a lush, waterproof blanket or lightweight rug and luxurious throw pillows create layers of comfort. A low picnic table or elevated tray will place your offerings at eye level and make serving easier.
• Cloth napkins paired with premium plastic plates and goblets keep things elegant and prevent breakage.
• A neutral theme with pops of color contrasts the natural environment nicely.
• Spread the offerings for a lavish arrangement. Use passable trays and baskets so sharing is more effortless.
• Infuse your style and vibe. Boho? Retro? Chic? It's your canvas!
Most of all, enjoy! A pretty picnic not only shows off your exceptional taste, but also creates a perfectly joyous occasion.

If you intend to leave assets to a Special Needs family member upon your passing, careful consideration is needed to avoid losing government benefits. Needs-based benefits, like Medicaid and SSI, can be affected by an inheritance. A Special Needs Trust allows you to leave any amount of money for the care of a Special Needs person without affecting their benefits, and to name a Trustee to manage the assets on their behalf.
For the month of July, readers of Roswell City Lifestyle will receive 50% off Special Needs Trusts with the purchase of a Revocable Living Trust Package.
“I had a great experience with Oren Ross. I liked the way that he explained the Trust process...Setting up a trust does not mean you have a lot of money - for me it came down to having everything under one “umbrella” - and the assurance that my son will not have to take care of things during an already stressful time. Oren is detail oriented and is knowledgeable about the laws regarding trusts and estates. I also feel he is trustworthy - something you can’t always be sure about in a lawyer.”

This summer take a road trip and visit Savoy Automobile Museum, presenting a star-studded line-up of exhibitions, presentations, and special events. Here’s a sneak peek of what they have in store.
Most of us will never get our photos taken with Tom Cruise or Dustin Hoffman. However, in Savoy’s Movie Cars exhibition visitors can pose by the 1949 Buick Roadmaster convertible that both stars drove in the movie “Rain Man.”
The link between NASCAR drivers and moonshine runners was based on the need for speed. Both groups shared tips and tricks to boost horsepower. During Prohibition, the automobile became one of the prime methods of distributing illegal alcohol. The Moonshine Runners exhibition features vehicles for delivering the goods while outrunning the law.
In Savoy’s Great Hall, the first of two exhibitions from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum is on display. Most aren’t race winners, but have a special place in automotive racing history. Mark your calendars for two special events in August. The first weekend of August will feature programs for children and adults with Wayne Carini, and Jay Ward, creator of the movie “Cars.” A special guest appearance by Lightning McQueen is also on tap. On Saturday, August 17 the museum’s showgrounds will host The Connection car show.
Summer at Savoy is filled with things to do. Friday night movies, guest speaker presentations, special events, and exhibitions that change monthly provide opportunities to explore the wonderful world of the automobile.
You can’t spell Cartersville without CAR.
Check the website SavoyMuseum.org for details of upcoming events and dates.
Food enthusiasts can embark on a delightful journey through Gulf Coast cuisine, beverages, and culture in a relaxed, inviting neighborhood destination, elevated by the ambiance of a beachside retreat and a menu that transcends expectations.
Coastal offers daily culinary and beverage delights, punctuated by special events like Tuesday night trivia and live music performances. And, for loyal fans of original Houcks, no need to worry, Coastal's menu features many dishes that have won hearts over the past 35 years along with the same owners, staff and service you've come to expect.
Among the enticing additions, Stuart is enthusiastic about the "Ray Bob," a Southern twist on the timeless Reuben sandwich, as well as Mexican molotes, thin-sliced fried catfish served with gluten-free hush puppies, a modern take on a Southern favorite. CoastalRoswell.com

CORPORAL TAMARA LUCAS-STOKES
As a Marine, this means that very few people choose to become a Marine, and even fewer succeed.
"Because of how hard it is, we are very proud of what we have accomplished. We are the Few and Proud, but as a woman Marine we are the Fewer, the Prouder Marine," says Tamara Lucas-Stokes of Roswell.
