Hello to Love, Life and Local Makers I don’t know about you, but this time of year I find myself torn between resisting the commercialization of another greeting card holiday and indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy the season of love. We are excited to share Ronnie and Brian Snitker's journey of baseball love and dedication in our cover story. A Valentine’s Day date out or to enjoy a cozy night at home? To buy a card or just say a kind word? I usually land somewhere a little in between, but what we hold in common is an opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. And regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope the pages of this month’s magazine will help you do just that as we celebrate and highlight what’s to love in our local community while you read about some of our local leaders on page 46 and what they love about serving our community. While we teeter between the chill of January winter and the excitement of spring, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life - the ones in your home and on your street, in your neighborhood and your community. “Love local” means to love your local businesses, to support them and those in your community; but it also means loving what is near - those under your own roof included. Read our story on page 22 about several Roswell couples who have a special love journey. We’ve always believed what we can do together is so much more than what we can do apart. We continue to see that demonstrated through the many stories told in these pages month after month. Thanks for letting us be a part of the life you’re building, whatever that may look like. Logan acquired transverse myelitis in his spine at 5 months of age, which left him with incomplete paraplegia. He is an athlete! He excels at everything he tries. He has been on a competition swim team, Challenger baseball and currently plays on the Jr. Hawks prep basketball team with Blaze Sports. Logan will tell you that when he grows up, his parent’s want him to go to college and maybe become a computer programmer or something in that field, but he wants to become a “sit down comedian.” Sunshine on a Ranney Day renovated his home to give him a wheelchair accessible bathroom and dream bedroom. Once upon a time, there were two people whose paths crossed in a feat of good fortune. They left the past behind, becoming one. They became their best selves. Families blended, and the future was a beautiful red carpet, rolled out for the two who finally found true love. Here are four local love stories to inspire you this Valentine’s Day.

We actually met randomly at a farmers market. Our kids attended the preschool where I taught performing arts the previous year. I had never met him before so we were shocked to figure out that connection. He invited me to a wine tasting with his family the evening after we met, and since I didn’t have my kids that weekend and no plans, I went. I love that we have a picture of that day. We started getting together regularly for playdates for our kids, going on hikes, visiting playgrounds and rock climbing gyms, and just letting them play. We were enjoying spending time together as much as the kids did... and ended up falling for one another. Fast forward two and a half years, and we are now engaged to be married and living as a beautifully blended family in Roswell, where it all began. We will spend Valentine’s Day with our three kids making heart-shaped pizza, as usual. CONTINUED >

Amy and Steve Stroud Amy’s story.

We met when I interviewed for a job in Roswell in early 2016. Steve, in his role as executive director of Roswell Inc., was part of the interview committee. During the interview process we discovered that he had just joined the board of North Fulton Community Charities, an organization that my uncle Ed La House helped establish and who still served on the board. He attended high school with my cousin William La House. Apparently my cousin helped Steve pass math. This was all very funny since I had grown up and spent my first 43 years in Connecticut! Small world to say the least. We married in October of 2018. We love our blended family, but we’ve also worked really hard at it too. I consider myself blessed to have Steve’s girls in my life and I think they’ve gained a huge and wonderful group of aunts, uncles, an amazing grandmother, and lots of cousins on my side. We love having everyone together. I cook and Steve and the girls clean-up. The rule is that we eat at the dining room table, which is wonderful because we always end up sitting around talking for hours - the very best part of the day! That rule was my non-negotiable when we moved in together.

Jacque and Joe Digieso Jacque’s story

Our meeting was a typical college experience. He was a senior and by May, we were engaged. We planned to move to Australia and raise cattle. Then the Vietnam War interrupted our plans. Joe worked for Meadow Gold Dairies and was assigned to Cam Rahn Bay dairy plant to provide milk, ice cream and cottage cheese for the soldiers in Vietnam. He was also drafted at that time but received an occupational deferment. Our wedding plans were put on hold. On December 12, 1968, I received a patch call over ham radio. There were no cell phones then and we corresponded with that funny airmail stationery that folded into an envelope and took weeks to arrive! Joe was on the line saying, “Do you still want to get married? Over.” I giddily replied, “Yes, of course! Over.” He said, “Plan to fly to Bangkok as soon as you can. I’ll meet you there. Over.” My parents booked a flight for January 3, 1969, and quickly ordered announcements (my Southern mother followed protocol). She even planned an engagement/bon voyage party. Twenty years later we were remarried on January 1 at St. David’s here in Roswell. We celebrated our 50th in Sydney, Australia on New Year’s Eve and then enjoyed a cruise around Australia and New Zealand. We love to travel and that was a special trip. We have two grown sons and five grandchildren.

Eileen and Billy Reeves, Jr. For their fourth wedding anniversary two years ago, Eileen and Billy Reeves, Jr. got matching tattoos with their initials, “B&E.” They are retired, enjoy international travel (Cabo San Lucas this month), and take great pleasure in surprising one another with special gifts. Eileen shares their story. On July 29 2010, Billy had a consultation scheduled at Thomas Eye Group where I was surgical coordinator. Although I would normally discuss routine things when scheduling patients, when Billy walked into my office, the connection was immediate and realized I could have talked to him for hours. After an invitation to dinner through FaceBook, we went on our first date exactly one week later and have been inseparable ever since. We got engaged in Buckhead outside Umi and tied the knot in Doonbeg, Ireland on July 29, 2018. We are living life at its best, and we call it “The Adventures of B&E.” There is a common thread of each anniversary that we love – we always find out what the traditional gifts are for each year and come up with creative ideas to incorporate them into our presents. A favorite was for our first anniversary. Billy had business cards created with our information on them including a logo that has become our “brand.” Look for us cruising up and down Canton Street in our Veuve Cliquot-inspired orange Moke, and we are always enjoying cocktails on our bench on Canton Street across from Zest.

A Magnificent First for Roswell FIRST ANNUAL CHRISTKINDLMARKET BENEFITS BULLOCH HALL

any amazing individuals were instrumental in bringing a European Christmas Market to the grounds of a Roswell treasure, historic Bulloch Hall, the childhood home of Mittie Bulloch, mother of the 26th President, Theodore Roosevelt. Friends of Bulloch, Inc., in partnership with the Roswell Rotary Club, discussed such a venture. The primary power

ARTICLE BY ROSWELL CITY LIFESTYLE STAFF brokers were Friends of Bulloch President Bob Hagan, and Roswell Rotary President Alex Kaufman, who had a relationship with Marcel Kraus of the Munich Event Group. They presented a grandiose plan with gingerbread houses for artisan vendors; German foods, sausages and chimney cakes; gluhwein; Santa photo opportunities; a train for kids; a beer garden; and an adorable village of inflatable Christmas characters to create a wonderland on the expansive grounds of Bulloch Hall.

The mayor and city council loved the magic it would bring to Roswell and worked with the organizations to make it happen. The Christkindlmarket opened on the day after Thanksgiving and closed on Christmas Eve. More than 125,000 people attended the market and toured Bulloch Hall, which was beautifully decorated for Christmas in a European Christmas theme by local service organizations and designers. More than 22,000 people toured the home on opening night. “Roswell is such a wonderful place to live for so many reasons - one of which is the vibrant organizations that serve our city like Roswell Rotary and Friends of Bulloch, and the incredible people that are the heartbeat of those organizations with their time, talent and treasures,” says Mayor Kurt Wilson. “They truly are amazing and do so much to enrich Roswell.” Marcel Kraus comes from a German family of showmen and is the third generation to do this type of event. Roswell was the first event in the USA for Munich Event Group Inc. “My family and I spent most of 2023 on this event, our first in the U.S., from building the booths to planning with the City of Roswell,” says Marcel. “I couldn’t have done it

without my family, my father Mitch Kraus, my mother Katja Kraus and my wife Romina Lettner, who stood by my side every day.” Bob Hagan worked tirelessly during the entire Christkindlmarket and was the go-to person for every challenge that occurs with a new event. “I was so pleased and excited with the Christmas market being in Roswell and on the grounds of Bulloch Hall,” says Bob. “I was especially happy to see so many people visiting our historic Bulloch Hall. It was a joy to see families and children enjoying the Christmas spirit. We have not had this many visitors in years. The home looked wonderful. Many local service organizations and local designers brought Christmas magic to Bulloch Hall. We thank Mayor Wilson and the City Council for allowing the Christkindlmarket to happen. Baseball Forever A LOVE STORY: RONNIE AND BRIAN SNITKER’S JOURNEY WITH THE BRAVES

Brian Snitker was a 21-year-old kid from Macon, IL when he joined the Atlanta Braves as a minor league player. Forty years later, Brian finally got his shot to manage the team. With Brian at the helm, the Braves dominated the National League East, winning the last six straight division championships, and beat the Astros to become 2021 World Series Champions! Recently, Brian was in Nashville with his wife Ronnie at the MLB Winter Meetings. When the meetings were over, Brian and Ronnie decided to enjoy an evening together at the Grand Ole Opry. While backstage, among the glamour and glitz, Ronnie couldn’t help but think about the road they had traveled together, and asked Brian, “How the heck did we get here?” Yogi Berra said, “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.” Brian came to a fork in the road in 1980 when his playing days came to an end, and Hank Aaron offered him an opportunity to stay in professional baseball as a roving minor league instructor. “I’d been playing baseball since I was seven years old. I loved the game. I could’ve gone

back to finish school to become a college coach, but I thought, what the heck, this would give me a chance to do what I love. I wanted to see where it would take me.” In 1981, Veronica “Ronnie” Sylvester was working at an elementary school in Bradenton, FL as a speech pathologist. A friend at work asked her if she would like to go on a blind date with her friend’s roommate. “At first, I wasn’t interested, but she kept bugging me. When she told me they were baseball players, my reaction was not just no, but 'hell no!’ Eventually, I gave in and went on the blind date.” Her friend’s roommate turned out to be Brian Snitker. Ronnie’s parents could see that she was getting serious about Brian, so they suggested that she “go and see if this is the life for you before you get too far into it.” Ronnie decided to give it a try and went with Brian to Anderson, SC. “It was Brian’s first time managing a team. He was 26 and the youngest manager in professional baseball.” A year later Brian and Ronnie tied the knot and began their journey down baseball’s rocky road together. Brian tasted his first cup of coffee in the big leagues when he was named the Braves’ bullpen coach in 1985, but

the following year he was “recycled” back to the minors. A couple of years later, Bobby Cox called him back to the big leagues for a four-year stint as the bullpen and first base coach, and then he was “recycled” back to the minors again. Fifteen years later, Bobby Cox brought Brian back to the big leagues for a seven-year stint as his third base coach. The Braves lost to the Dodgers in the 2013 playoffs and management decided to tweak the staff. Brian learned that he was the “tweak” as he got “recycled” back to the minors for the third and final time. Getting “recycled” to the minors after living the big league life would discourage most people, but not Brian. “I’m a baseball guy. I just dealt with it. You get ‘recycled’ and you just keep grinding. I don’t know that I was ever driven to get back to the big leagues. I was doing it because I loved it. I enjoyed the life. I enjoyed the job. I enjoyed developing the young players. I just enjoyed doing it.” Two years later, at the age of 60, he was named the Braves interim manager. “We had to change the culture and get a better group of guys – and we did. and we told our guys the truth. I told them, ‘My door is always open, but if you come in and sit down you better be ready to hear the truth.’” Ronnie summed up the life of a baseball wife, “Brian is gone during spring training and when the season starts, half of his games are on the road. We’ve been married forty years, but we’ve only really lived together twenty years.” “I would drive to see Brian in spring training, stay for four or five days and wouldn’t see him again for six weeks.” They say absence makes the heart grow fonder, which might explain why both of their children were “spring training babies.” Their daughter, Erin, was born nine months after Ronnie visited spring training in 1986, and their son Troy was born nine months after she visited spring training in 1988. “When the kids were older, I’d pack our Chevy Astro van with matching boxes that fit perfectly in the van and would bungy cord a small TV and VCR to a milk carton to keep the kids entertained during the drive," Ronnie explains. "When the boxes were unpacked, we’d use them as our summer furniture. I wore out three Chevy Astro vans during our minor league years.” Ronnie took the kids to the ballgame every night. "Erin loved to sing 'Take Me Out to the Ballgame' during the seventh inning stretch.” Meanwhile Troy would hang out with Brian. “Troy was born into the baseball life and raised in the clubhouse.” Erin now lives in the Atlanta area with her husband and their three boys, 8-year-old twins and a 3-yearold. Of course, Brian and Ronnie do everything they can to spoil their grandsons! Troy followed in Brian’s footsteps, playing pro baseball in the Braves and Pirates organizations, then joining the Astros organization where he is currently the major league hitting coach. When the Braves played the Astros in the 2021 World Series, Ronnie made jackets for her and Erin. The front was half Braves and half Astros, with "Teams Divided - Hearts United" printed on the back. When asked who she rooted for in the series, she says, “Erin and I rooted for Brian and Troy, there was no losing for our family.” Looking back, Brian says that the most difficult part of their journey was “being away from my family and my kids all the time. If it wasn’t for Ronnie, I wouldn’t have been able to do this. It took patience, trust, and love – and we’re still working on it after forty years.” Ronnie agreed, “I took every opportunity that I could to get the kids to Brian. He wouldn’t have lasted without the kids. We did what we had to do to make it work – and next thing you know, we’re backstage at the Grand Ole Opry!”

We moved to Horseshoe Bend to be closer to our church community, where Rhonda served on staff and I taught kids church for 10 years. Rhonda and I served on the boards of A Beacon of Hope in Johns Creek for 20 years and Georgia Center of Opportunity in Norcross for 10 years. Our family loves history. Roswell is unique in the preservation of the many original homesteads and historic cemeteries. Canton Street is a huge draw for the city. But for me, the undeveloped riverfront and acres of parkland make our city special and are the bedrock for our Roswell quality of life. 2024 Goals: Now that Big Creek Parkway is back to the original design, the one approved by voters in the 2016 TSPLOST referendum, I am looking forward to establishing an updated project timeline and moving forward. Big Creek Parkway is the type of connectivity project that benefits both East and West Roswell and should be a focus. Also, longtime residents know that the river’s flow has changed a lot over the years. The addition to the River Parks Master Plan to begin to address years’ long neglect of tending to the silting issue is a project that stewards our crown jewel wisely. Not a sexy project, but a really important one. Favorite haunts: Café au Lait, Hooligans and From the Earth. For meeting friends and sports events, you will find us at Rock N Taco or The Standard, The Vick, where Kadijah always exceeds expectations. The Garrard Landing Park trail system and my men’s group at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church are a blessing.

Work and family: Sarah is Vice President, Operations Oasis Consulting Services (Roswell). She is married to Tommy, with two sons, Turner and Rowan and they have a dog, Kirby. She has served one year on Roswell City Council and is Public Safety Liaison. Why Roswell? Roswell was my childhood hometown. It’s where my parents still live, and where we proudly run a family business. It’s home. It was a natural choice for my husband and I to choose Roswell to raise our family as well. Roswell has the best of all worlds: natural amenities, unique charm, a strong sense of community, an award-winning recreation and parks program, and the best restaurants in the metro region. 2024 Goals: I’m excited to continue our historic transition to a full-time fire department, begin developing our public safety facility, break ground on our river parks improvements, expand our sidewalk/multimodal pathway network, and so much more. I’ve served as liaison to transportation, community development, finance, and Mayor Pro Tem 2023. Roswell has the same warmth and familiarity as the community where I grew up, with strong family values, a supportive atmosphere, and unique historical and environmental offerings. I have had the pleasure of exploring Roswell while clipping along on two wheels on group rides with Bike Roswell. On a bike, Roswell reveals all her unique charms for those willing to slow down and allow your senses to drink it all in. There is another dimension of Roswell beyond her natural attractions – a real city with layers of history where you can explore alleys of entertainment and taste the diverse flavors of a vibrant restaurant scene. It’s easy to feel as if you are off on a vacation – without ever leaving Roswell. 2024 goals: The sidewalk and multi-use trail projects on roads like Old Alabama, Hardscrabble, Chaffin, King and Pine Grove should make good progress during 2024. The Riverside Road project near Martin’s Landing and the River Parks Master Plan are two more initiatives that are exciting as is the creation and adoption of a city agricultural plan. Favorite Roswell haunts: The Stout Brothers Beer Market, Cubanos ATL, The Vick, Pop Alleigh, Amalfi Italian, Di Paolo restaurant in East Roswell, Carniceria 3 Hermanos.

Why Roswell: February this year marks my 22nd year being a Roswell resident. Having grown up in a small town in Alabama rich in historic architecture, Roswell fit. We have been visiting since before being married and still call Hugo’s Oyster Bar our favorite place for special dinner celebrations! 2024 is the 3rd year of my first 4-year term as a Roswell City Council Member. This might be the most difficult role in which I have ever served. Having a past career in catering and hospitality, delivering event excellence with customer service and satisfaction has always been paramount. Roswell is at a unique station in her life. It is time to move forward deliberately to ensure our residents’ desires are fulfilled; protecting our neighborhoods, green spaces and historic nature while creating responsible development opportunities to offset our tax burden and sustain our allure as a thriving aspiration city. 2024 Goals: The project I am most excited is our Historic Assets plans that we are putting into motion. The notion that any and everyone visiting Roswell will know and have access to Barrington Hall, Bulloch Hall, Mimosa Hall, Smith Plantation and Holly Hill thrills me. CONTINUED >

Work and family: David is an anesthetist at Northside Hospital Forsyth. He and his wife Nicole have three children: Samuel (6) Collins (5) Sawyer (2). Why Roswell? We moved to Roswell in 2014 because we were ready to expand our family and felt like Roswell has everything a family would want! We fell in love with Roswell by floating in the river on a hot summer day and then enjoying Canton Street restaurants after a long day. In 2017, we moved from our house by the river to the Country Club of Roswell neighborhood, a great community where everyone helps each other. So many friends and neighbors help watch the kids or run them to sports or other activities. It is the best city to raise a family, but also has something for every stage of life. 2024 Goals: I ran a campaign on making Roswell the safest city in the state for pedestrians and cyclists and hope the rest of the city council will join me in accomplishing that goal. Our citizens should feel safe to walk in their neighborhoods and cyclists should have safe places to ride. Favorite Roswell haunts: Gracious Plenty, Crazy Love, 1920, Bask Steakhouse, Table and Main, Bambinelli’s, Vickery Creek Trail and walking to the falls.

I started serving in January 2022. My first term ends after December 2026. I’ve served as the liaison to the

recreation, parks, historic and Cultural Affairs Department and as the liaison to the Environmental & Public Works Department. When my wife accepted a new role with Emory University, we relocated from the Birmingham, AL area. We were not house shopping, but city shopping in determining where we wanted to call home. It wasn’t until we visited Roswell that we found a sense of home. Roswell reminds me of my birthplace of Selma, AL in terms of history, culture, small town community, and plenty of green space. While we were having dinner in downtown Roswell during our exploratory phase of the Atlanta area, we both looked at one another and said, “Roswell simply feels like home.” The decision was made right there, Roswell was it for us. The small town community feeling of Roswell coupled with the amazing recreation and parks system just can’t be found in any other municipality. This is what makes Roswell special to my family and continues to impress each time we visit a different city for an event. Each time we attend a sporting event or performance, or visit family friends in a different city, I am always comparing to it Roswell. I consistently find the lifestyle and vibe Roswell offers to be unmatched in neighboring communities. 2024 Goals: In November 2022, the Roswell voters overwhelmingly approved $179.6 million in bond funding for three different initiatives. $107.6 million was approved for recreation, parks, bicycle and pedestrian paths, and sidewalk gap fulfillment. $52 million was approved for public safety capital projects. $20 million was approved for the construction of a downtown public parking deck. The funding that was granted for these bond projects will not only enhance our current daily lives, but will also yield dividends for our future generations. Favorite Roswell haunts: Cubanos, the Leita Thompson or Seven Branches walking trails, Atlanta Junior Rowing Association, the Roswell Gymnastics program.

WOR L D My paintings and mural installations present viewers with highly stylized versions of nature using techniques that combine reality with abstraction. I do not try to replicate nature or real space, instead I use the familiar genre of landscape to represent both the physical and emotional conditions that shape our environment. In my imagery I want to create the impression that the horizon is malleable, perpetually transforming and adapting to human intervention and natural phenomenon. In my studio practice I seek to find order, humor, and balance in the chaotic beauty that is life and I make a visual appeal to be empathetic and hopeful in tumultuous times. I graduated from the Atlanta College of Art in 1998 and completed my Master's Degree at Goldsmiths College, London in 2000. I am in a number of local collections including the High Museum, MOCA GA, Edelman, and King & Spalding. In my career I have worked on multiple painting series and large-scale mural projects, exhibiting

my work in galleries throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe, including White Columns, NY, Cosmic Gallery, Paris, the MOCA Jacksonville, Fl., and the High Museum. My work has been published in Noplaceness: Art in a Post Urban Landscape, Stickers Deluxe: From Punk Rock to Contemporary Art, and New American Paintings in 2012, 2007, and 2003. In 2014 I was awarded the 2014/2015 MOCA GA Working Artist Project Grant selected by Siri Engberg, Senior Curator at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. David and Betty Ann Doss were raised in Georgia, but miles apart. David grew up in Tifton and Betty Ann grew up in Blairsville. Steeped in faith since childhood, they were married on June 5 of last year, after meeting at Holbrook where they both live. “We met here at Holbrook by God’s intervention,” says Betty Ann. “On a Saturday morning, David had business in the Holbrook business office, the only time he had ever been there. On his way back to his cottage, he walked down the hallway where he saw Kelly, Community Relations Director at Holbrook. She was showing me and my sister Kat around.” They dated for 1 1/2 years, fell in love, and now live together in a Holbrook cottage. They enjoy meeting

new people and serving as ambassadors. Last month, they hosted a dinner in honor of 90+ year-old residents at Holbrook. “Amazingly there are 32 residents in that age group,” says Betty Ann who also enjoys the exercise classes offered daily. They enjoy Bible study and worship on Sundays. “We have many kindred interests in food and travel. We often complete each other’s sentences because we think alike,” she says. David has three children and three grandchildren. Betty Ann has one son, four stepsons, two stepdaughters, and eight step-grandchildren. “Now, they will be celebrating their first Valentine’s Day as a married couple.” BABS AND WES

Babs and Wes Catrell were married on October 29, 2023, by Pastor Jeremy at the First Baptist Church Woodstock, who noted that they were the oldest couple he’d ever married. Wes is 88 years old and Babs is 86. They knew each other for several years, attending the same church and many of the same functions, but finally met at a funeral for a common friend. They sat together during the service and chatted and Wes asked Babs to join him for lunch at Holbrook where Wes lived. When Holbrook Woodstock was under construction Wes and his late wife lived just a few miles away and noticed the

construction. She felt living at Holbrook would be like living on a cruise ship. Unfortunately, four months after they moved into their cottage, Bernadine passed away. After going through the tremendous grief of losing his wife of 62 years, Wes remained at Holbrook. As Wes and Bab's friendship bloomed, they discovered they had a lot in common: an appreciation for music, sports and family. Now, they will be celebrating their first Valentine’s Day as a married couple. They enjoy the excellent dining at Holbrook; the spa, including up-to-date exercise equipment, a saltwater pool, and a salon for men and women’s hair and nails along with massage therapy.

I think we are all intimidated by auditions, but I must say that Michael O’Neal works ver y hard to make the experience non-threatening. Since its inception in 1989, The Michael O’Neal Singers (MOS) organization has established itself as one of the finest symphonic choruses in the Southeastern United States. Ranging in experience from dedicated amateur musicians to veteran professionals, MOS is composed of a chorus of over 130 auditioned voices and Kaleidoscope, a chamber ensemble of 32 voices. We sat down with two vocalists to find out what makes their hearts sing. Stephanie Adrian has been with OS since 2017. A soprano, she relishes the repertoire that Michael chooses from season to season and the weekly rehearsal process, learning new music and preparing for a concert. A violinist since childhood, she fell in love with opera when she was 11, joined the children’s chorus of Opera Omaha and sang in a production of Puccini's Tosca. “I found the opera singers larger-than-life! Their voices, their costumes, their personalities,” says Stephanie, who moved to Roswell in 2017 in order to send her children to Blessed Trinity and Queen of Angels Catholic School. “I used to watch, mesmerized, from the wings when I wasn’t onstage. I became a violin and voice major in college and have spent the last twenty-five years as a professional classical singer, voice teacher, and arts writer.” She is now a speech-language pathologist and specializes in voice disorders, treating clients of all ages with other communication disorders. Caring for herself is a priority. “I care for my singing voice by hydrating, exercising, and getting good sleep. On performance days, I spend time warming up my voice for about 15-20 minutes beforehand, singing up and down my range.” Venturing into 2024, she encourages anyone who loves to sing to join a community chorus or other singing group - no matter your skill level or self-perception about whether or not you’re good

enough. “It’s incredibly fulfilling to be with others who love music and want to be part of something greater than themselves. Music makes the world a more beautiful place!” Allan Kennedy has been a member of Michael O'Neal singers since 1993 and also sings with the MOS chamber group, Kaleidoscope. He grew up in a musical family, sang in a boy's choir and joined the Roswell United Methodist Church where Michael O'Neal was the Director of Worship Arts for more than two decades. “The opportunity to join with other choral singers is a profound experience, because the sound the chorus produces requires us singers to connect musically and to some degree emotionally as we perform,” says Allan. “That connection is visceral. You can feel it in your bones. When I sing, I am transported to a place emotionally that is transformative.” Allan feels Dr. O'Neal is skilled at connecting with the chorus in a way that brings out the best in each voice. “I also enjoy the variety of the repertoire that we perform. Michael's national reputation and experience are something all of us benefit from. Michael is a teacher. We sing the classics such as Bach's "B-Minor Mass," but also more contemporary pieces such as Bernstein's "West Side Story" and we even did a soft rockin' concert. We have performed opera pieces, bluegrass, and spirituals.” Regarding auditions, he commiserates. “I think we are all intimidated by auditions, but I must say that Michael O'Neal works very hard to make the experience non-threatening and enjoyable. When one sings with a group of other choristers that have taken the time and effort to audition, you know that you are with kindred souls.” MOSingers.com

Musician, vocalist and educator Karla Harris has been a Roswell resident since 2012. A St. Louis native, she and her husband John met at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, married after graduating, and raised two sons in the area. John's job as an industrial engineer with UPS took them from St. Louis to Portland, and then to Roswell, where they currently live with their beloved poodle. The pair now works together, as he manages booking and logistical planning for her many concerts and guest appearances.

drum set and gave me a bow. It was a surprising and sweet moment, and a great honor." An artist-in-residence with Kennesaw State University, Harris teaches Applied Vocal Jazz and loves working with aspiring singers. "These students are so passionate about this uniquely American art form," Harris said. "Recently, one of my students performed for a special event at Cobb Energy Centre. He absolutely nailed it, and I could see on his face that he had realized a dream.” “I also love to witness the camaraderie that grows among my students at Kennesaw,” she added. “The world of a vocalist is unique, so we aim to foster an atmosphere of total support for each other.”

Stay-At-Home Valentine’s Day IN G R E D I E N T S 6–8 servings • 1 1/2 pounds skinless, boneless chicken breasts • Kosher or coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter • 1 teaspoon minced garlic • 4 cups chicken broth, preferably low-sodium • 1 package (1 pound) of penne rigate or ziti • 1 1/2 cups heavy (whipping) cream or half-andhalf, warmed • 1 cup freshly grated Parmesan, plus more for serving • 1/4 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley (optional)

DIRECTIONS 1. Cut the chicken breasts into 1-inch pieces. Season with salt and pepper. 2. Melt the butter in a very large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken, in batches if necessary, and sauté until nicely browned on the outside, but still a bit pink inside, about 4 minutes (the pieces don’t have to be browned on all sides; two sides is fine). Remove the chicken and set aside on a plate. 3. Do not clean the pan! Those brown bits on the bottom of the pan are going to add flavor to the sauce. Add the garlic to the pan and sauté over medium heat until you can smell it, 30 seconds. Turn the heat to high, add the chicken broth, and scrape the bottom of the pan to loosen up all of those delicious caramelized bits. Bring to a simmer, lower to medium heat, and simmer for 5 minutes. Add the pasta, stir well, and simmer until the pasta starts to soften about 8 minutes. Stir in the warm cream and the browned chicken with any juices that have accumulated on the plate. Cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is tender, most of the liquid has been absorbed, and the chicken is cooked through, about 4 minutes more. Stir in the Parmesan until well incorporated, and adjust the seasonings and serve. From Epicurious.com

What began as a small group of volunteers lending a hand at a shelter in downtown Atlanta has expanded and grown into an organization based in Roswell that serves thousands of children and mothers each year. As she embarks on a well-deserved retirement, Roswell’s City Clerk, Marlee Press, reflects on 26 years with the City and her love for the community she served. Marlee Press used to tell people she was going to be the mayor of a city someday. She was fascinated by government, but more than anything, she wanted to be a public servant and make a real difference in a community. “Although I didn’t end up as a mayor, I have worked right alongside several mayors and other elected officials in my time at Roswell. Being able to help them deliver the best service to our community has meant so much to me,” says Marlee. Ask anyone at the City of Roswell how vital Marlee has been to the City over the past 26 years, and you will hear a litany of praise and admiration that stretches across all departments and stories of Marlee’s inexhaustible energy, kindness, reliability, and helpfulness. But if you ask Marlee, she will shrug, smile, and insist that she’s simply doing her job and following her heart by serving others. Born in Gary, Indiana, Marlee and her family eventually settled just north of Chicago. Marlee loved school and was an athlete, who would eventually share her fervor for fitness as an aerobics instructor and a runner. Marlee attended Northern Illinois University and graduated with a dual major in political science and sociology. During her college career, she discovered a passion for volunteering and a great desire to be active and engaged in her community—a focus that would stay with her the rest of her life. While volunteering with organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters and local prison outreach programs, Marlee realized the impact of being able to make meaningful connections with those who needed it the most. “We forget that sometimes people just need a friend— somebody to lean on or just have a conversation with,” says Marlee. “I really wanted to connect with people in my community, and I hoped that I would have a positive impact, even in a small way. People just want to feel heard.”

After graduating college and living in San Francisco for a spell, Marlee moved to Texas, where she met her husband and had her daughter. Eventually, her husband’s company offered them an opportunity to move to the Atlanta area. One day, while searching for places to settle in North Fulton, Marlee decided to go for a run at Roswell Area Park— and that single experience sealed the deal for Marlee. “I just fell in love with the park and all Roswell had to offer. I decided this is where I wanted to live and raise our daughter. There is no place like Roswell!” During her early years in Roswell, Marlee taught exercise and wellness classes and worked as a paralegal for Home Depot before deciding to spend time at home with her young daughter. When Marlee decided to go back to work full time, she knew she wanted to work for the city she had come to call home. Marlee started as the front-desk receptionist at Roswell City Hall in 1997. Since then, she has been part of three different administrations, working in the Community Development department and then as Executive Assistant to the City Council for more than 10 years before advancing to one of the most important roles in municipal government—City Clerk—in 2011. “I had learned so much about the City and municipal government by working alongside our elected officials and our City staff for many years,” says Marlee. “I had all this knowledge and experience—and now I could also work directly with the public, making sure everyone had the information they needed to be active participants in our local government.” The role of City Clerk includes a variety of vital responsibilities, including retaining and managing all records, responding to public requests, documenting and facilitating city council and other public meetings, publishing ordinances and resolutions, qualifying candidates for elections, and serving as the public’s liaison to their local government. “The thing I love most about my job is helping people be engaged in their city government,” says Marlee. “From assisting residents in finding the information they are seeking, to ensuring our staff and elected officials have what they need to best serve our citizens, I just love helping people be successful.” As she looks forward to spending more time with her family—especially her young granddaughter—and having more opportunities to run the trails in her much-loved Roswell parks, Marlee’s greatest hope is that the citizens she has served for almost a quarter century will know how important they are to the City of Roswell. “More than anything, I want citizens to know that the people who work for the City of Roswell are public servants who truly care. We are always here to help them. They are at the heart of all we do,” says Marlee. “I hope I have done my part to serve them well and help the City of Roswell to be successful into the future.” CITY OF ROSWELL, GA - WWW.ROSWELLGOV.COM
